Borys finished packing up the last of the stuff he was taking with him as he looked one last look around at his home or what was. He made his way outside where the police cruiser was and put his stuff in the trunk. He was as silent and as distant as ever as he took one last look at the neighbor hood before he ducked into the car waiting to be taken to his new destination. In the front seat was his sister and the dog that would journey with him to his new location. He looked out the window as he was wearing his casual attire though he would normally wear his uniform. A lot of the ride was silent until his sister spoke up.

"How are you doing back there little brother?" she asked him looking into the mirror for a moment see him.

Borys stayed silent.

"Listen Borys I'm sure you'll get along nicely there, we've even assigned you a partner to keep an eye on you." she said trying to cheer him up.

Borys stayed silent.

" I mean don't be so down, yuor a great cop, the best in our city, you can be one of the best in their city too!" she said.

Borys looked at her from the corner of his eyes.

" It'll be fine, mom and dad would be proud, smile on in awhile, show the people at the department how we do things in Los Angeles." he said

Borys simply sighed not exactly thrilled. He was still pained with the death of his family, His mind was crushed and so was his heart. He cared nothing for New York City nor did he care anything for having a partner. He continued to watch as the day just passed by along with the cars and the roads and streets he used to know as they drove all the way to New york. It took hours to reach even at the speed she was going and almost no stops. They pulled into the city filled with cars and and people certainly busier than his city. He looked around and memorized anything he could as they continued towards the station. Once there she pulled up Borys immediately got out of the car. Borys looked at the station and sighed walking forward as the dog was let out with him. His sister stepped out of the car

" Play nice, I'll DROP THESE OFF AND THEN I'm GOING HOME, GOODBYE Borys." she said and then just drove off as he walked into the station.

I walked in the station like it was any other day. The New York cops all sat around the desks doing paper work, talking on phones and anything else to pass the time while waiting for a case. Rachelle, my best friend and coworker, waved a hello as she continued chatting on the phone with today’s phone call victim. She could talk to anyone about anything, mostly nothing, for hours.

“Johnson!”
The chief yelled as he popped his head out of the office. “In my office. Now.” He walked back in where he would await me at his desk. I turned to Rachelle who seemed to be on hold.

“I haven’t been in the office five minutes and already he’s shouting for me.” Rachelle laughed as I walked the dreaded walk. It felt like a walk to the principal’s office. I was the best on the force because I did things my own way. My last Chief in Texas didn’t mind my methods because they cracked cases and put bad guys behind bars. Chief Officer Kendall, on the other hand, handed my methods. He was always about regulation.

“Three cars were forced into automobile accidents because you ran the streets when it was a green light.” The chief screamed again. I just sat there taking it all in, like I normally do, waiting for the moment when I could get a word in. “Now we have to pay for three different car repairs, one of them involves buying the family a new car, and on top of that we nearly got civilians killed!”

“Look, they jumped out of the way!” I protested. The chief didn’t seem to sit well with my answer. It was clearly written on his face. “And I ran into ongoing traffic because my I was chasing after a one of Tony DaVito’s guys, who I caught by the way, who I pursued on foot because my car was stuck in a dead end and it the garbage truck pulled in behind me. I had no other choice.” The chief tapped his pen on the desk, one of his many annoying qualities but I said nothing on the matter.

“You could have called in for backup. There were two police vehicles not two blocks away.” I began to argue the matter further but he put his hand up to silence me. “It doesn’t matter right now. What matters is the fact that you need to follow police regulations. Blowing up an airplane is not one of them.”

“Hey, that airplane was bound to blow up anyway.” I stated. The chief just ignored me and handed me a file. I assumed another case but I was dead wrong.

“Meet your new partner.” I nearly fell out of the chair. “He needs help getting back on his feet. Besides, I think it would be good to have you watched over.”

“But Chief, you know I don’t work with partners.” I looked at the file, still not liking the idea.

“Doesn’t matter. He’s coming in today and he’s your partner. No ‘buts’ Miss Johnson. Now get out of my office.”
I said nothing else and went back to my desk. Rachelle, now off the phone, tried to ask me what he wanted but I ignored her. I knew this guy. At least, I had heard of him. He had solved the Henderson case. That case was so big it had gone to the press. This guy wasn’t’ a rookie that was for sure. But I wasn’t too keen on the fact that he was only “partially insane.” Insane, whether full or only partially, was never a good sign.

“Great,” I sighed, “I get a nut case.” Just as I had begun to fully read his file, to see how big of a nut case he was, I heard laughing throughout the station. I looked up and noticed everyone and watching the same thing. A man, who didn’t look happy, walked into the station with a dog. At first, I thought it was a police dog but the dog seemed nicer. Police dogs were like Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator. They meant business when on the job and which meant everywhere including the station. This one seemed different. The dog caught me watching and walked over to me.

“Why, hello there.” I said in a baby voice. The dog was adorable and seemed to smell my own dog on me. “Well, aren’t you cute?” I said again. I looked up at the man who had walked in with the dog. “Are Officer Miller?” I asked.

“Johnson!”
The chief yelled again. “Has that new officer come in yet?” He asked. I turned back to the owner of the dog as I waited for a response.

Borys simply nodded at the girl as his dog mad friend with her just as quick. He looked around this station look different as he ignored all the face. He still had that unhappy look on his face and remained silent as he held his bag over his shoulder. He looked over at the girl and tilted his head. He wondered if this was at the girl his sister told him about, his new partner. He shook his head and walked past her and the dog and into the chief's office to let him know he had showed up but he stayed silent and watchful. The girl out there he knew as she solved the Palmetto Mob case which almost every police department in the country had been trying to stop. He also knew about her little episode and how she blew up a plane. She seems to have cost the station a lot of money but oh well. He sat down in a chair and looked at the chief and crossed his arms just waiting for him to speak in case he needed to.

He was quiet for a new guy. Usually, the rookies were all excited and all talk. I remember because I used to be one back in Texas. The chief still didn’t look happy. Then again, I wasn’t necessarily ever on his good side. I looked over at Rachelle who was giving me that “look” I received almost weekly.

“He’s cute.”
She said after he had walked into the chief’s office. “Do you think he’s single?” Rachelle hoped.

“You have a boyfriend.”
I stated.

“Not for me for you.” Rachelle winked but I just shrugged it off. My “guardian” was always trying to make sure I was taken care of. Including who I dated; or didn’t date. However, just as I was about to argue with her for the millionth time the chief decided to pop his head out of his office again.

“Johnson, get in here.” And just with that, his head went back into his office. I groaned when he couldn’t hear me and headed into his office. The new guy, his dog, and Satan were waiting for me. I sat down in the seat next to the new guy. The dog seemed to sit in between us. The chief looked over a few things before finally resting his hands on his desk and looking at the two of us.

“Meet your new partner. Rae Johnson, Borys Miller. You can get to know each other with your first case.”
The chief pulled out a folder and handed it to me. I looked at the file and quickly skimmed it. “A woman was found dead in an old abandon warehouse out by the docks. I want you two on the case.” The chief looked down at the dog between us. “You can take the dog but if he messes up the scene in any way, he’s gone.” The chief looked at Borys and then back at me. Neither one of us said anything “Alright you two, out.”

I got up and headed out of the station assuming the new guy was right behind me. I got in the car and waited for Borys and his dog. When they did finally join me, I started the car and headed off to the warehouse. We sat in silence for what seemed like forever. I couldn’t take it. “So what’s your dog’s name?” I finally asked. Hopefully, I would hear something from him.

Borys looked over at the girl when he mentioned partner before looking back at the chief. He also looked at the file ad shook his head putting it down. It was odd as usually on even a transfer cops first day they don't usually put them on cases they just give them a bit to adjust as he had only just moved and just got here. He had on issue as both he and his partner stood up to leave and head out to the crime scene. The dog seemed excited not bothered by the chiefs words as whatever the case it might be the bog was staying. It was in his medical file for one thing and the dog might seem sweet but he can get pretty nasty if someone tires to separate him from his master. He followed her out to the car and got in after the dog who hopped into the back seat. He continued to look out of the window in silence used to the silence and all. The peace of the silence was finally broken when she asked him about the dog. He decided to speak if only for moment " His name is Harris." he said an didn't look at her. Harris tilted his head at the mention of his name as he started to pant tempted to jump in the front seat. Borys voice was deep and still a little quiet. He hadn't spoken normally in years, he had hardly even spoken. He began to go over the case they were assigned to wondering about possible suspects just from experience but there were a lot of possibilities here. He rested his head in his hand and sighed taking in sights again.

It took me by surprise when he actually talked. His voice was deep and somewhat soothing. “So, it has a voice.” I teased but even that seemed a little too far. I felt guilty when he held his head in his hands. It was almost as if he was on the verge of tears. I hoped not. I hated it when men cried. My father broke down when I was 15 and my brother again when my father died. I nearly lost it myself when I saw both of them cry. Men were supposed to be strong.

“Gees, I’m sorry. Don’t take it too personally.”
I kept my eyes on the road. I knew if I saw him cry, it would be the end of me. And I didn’t even know him. It took a few more minutes to get to the warehouse which was had a few other officers already there making sure no one else messed with the scene.

I got out of the car and nearly fainted at the scene. I had crime scenes many times but never like this. The girl’s body was sprawled across the floor. Her body had markings everywhere carved into her skin. They looked pre-mortem. These carvings were made before she died. I walked over to the CSI assigned to the case along with us.

“Hey, Julie.” The woman smiled at me and continued taking photos while the Medical Examiner looked over the body. “Julie Fay, Borys Miller. My new partner.” I turned to Borys and pointed to the Medical Examiner. “And that’s Liam Deter.”

“Partner?” Julie asked.

“Don’t ask. So whatcha got?” I asked looking over the body. I noticed more markings outside of the body in the shape of a pentagram. “Cult?” I asked aloud.

“That’s what it seems like. Or some other ritual of some kind. Victim’s name is Hanna Rendrick. She’s 21. Here’s the address of her apartment.” Julie handed me a piece of paper. We had to find out about the parents. “We found a few hairs on the body that we’re hers. We’ll take it to the lab and let you know.” Liam moved to the other side of the body to try and see more.

“There are red markings on her wrist. She was probably tied up but the ropes are gone. My guess is kidnapping. Cause of death seems to be a stabbing of the heart. Definitely ritual stuff.” Liam stated still looking over the body. I wrote things down and turned to Borys.

“So what do you think?”
I asked.

Borys ignored her knowing she taught he was about to cry. He had only cried once since he was 18 and that was when he got the news of his family's murder. He got out of the car and began to looked at the victim looking away for a moment. He had only handled three cult cases and they were pretty light actual but this one seemed to be...gruesome. He went over to the victim and looked at the markings. He had seen them somewhere before but he couldn't remember exactly where " Probably picked her up at church or something...dealing with these cults sacrificing someone with a good amount of Faith pleased whatever being it was, these are certainly demonic in nature." he said " Too bad its not one of those alien cults, there the easiest to deal with." he said and sighed "Lets ask her parents if they know anything and search her apartment or something." he said. He stood up " Poor girl, the pain they put her through must have been intense, lets just be glad they didn't burn anything into her flesh." he said and went back to being silent and just walked around looking for anything else they might not have found already.

On the outside, I seemed fine. On the inside, I wanted to throw up. Liam looked over the body again and turned her hands over. The signs were definite. They burned more symbols into her hands. This was definitely a sacrifice of some kind. I looked away and looked over at Harris who, like a good dog, sat afar off. He had been trained well. I took a deep breath and looked back over at the body. I wrote down a few more things and closed the notebook.

“Alright, Jules. If you find anything else, let me know.” Julie nodded as I walked back to the car. After that, I needed fresh air. Quickly, I took out my phone and called Rachelle. “Hey Rachelle, I need you to look up the parents of Hanna Rendrick of New York. Thanks, Rachelle. Yeah, just text it to me.” I got in the car and waited for my two partners. When they were both in, I started driving to Hanna’s place. Most likely, it would be empty and it was the first thing we could do. A few minutes later I received a text but didn't check it while I was driving. I assumed it was from Rachelle.

"We'll go check out Hanna's place first and then get some lunch before heading to her parents' place." Thankfully, Hanna's apartment wasn't very far from the docks. But when we arrived, it wasn't what I expected. The building seemed upper class. There were no signs of Hanna living anywhere fancy like this place. Her fingers were dirty, which I figured she must have lived more in the ghetto area, at least, and she didn't wear any jewelery or show any signs that she did.

We all walked inside and tried to head upstairs but the manager stopped us. "I'm sorry. No dogs allowed in here." I flipped open my badge saying it didn't matter.

"We're here to see Hanna's apartment."
I stated.

"Why? Something wrong? I always thought that girl was into drugs. With her friends always coming every week like clock work." I took out my pad and paper.

"Do you know what any of them looked like?"
I asked further.

"College kids. A few brunettes, a few blonds but only one red head. She seemed like the leader, always bossing them around." I looked up and noticed a camera behind the desk. Hopefully, there would be something on those tapes. "There is one guy in their group, I call him The driver. He always comes but he never gets out of the car. He just sits and waits."

"Alright, we're going to need a copy of all our security footage as well as the key access to her apartment." The manager thought about it for a moment before nodding his head. He lead us to her room, opened it for us and informed us he would make copies of all the tapes ready by the time we left. As the manager walked downstairs, I turned to my partner. "Alright, let's get to work."

Borys looked at her and nodded simply. He whistled for Harris who followed quickly. Borys followed Rae quickly and silently into the apartment. He and Harris took to other rooms silent as Borys searched for anything out of the ordinary. He simply found a picture of her and a group of people her age. Some blond and brunettes and one red. He took the picture from the frame and put it in his pocket for later as he kept searching for something else. He felt a little dizzy but he ignored it. The place was clean, very clean not a speck of dirt or dust anywhere. He searched the bed room but no luck for anything to suspicious. He hated placed like these, they were always so clean, so devoid of any evidence.

It was too clean for my taste. Not even a speck of dust on the floor. Nothing was out of the ordinary. It was almost as if she knew what was going to happen. It just didn’t seem right. I checked the kitchen. The fridge was empty and her trash was full of one fast food back and a drink. A last meal perhaps? I grabbed my camera from my bag and began taking pictures to keep for evidence. I bagged the bag for any possible evidence. Something was telling me I wouldn’t find much.

I checked living room and found nothing. Not even a speck of dirt or even hair. Whoever killed her knew what they were doing. There weren’t even anything in the drawers. No silverware, no papers nothing. It was completely empty.

“I’m about done, what about you Borys?” I asked my partner. It seemed we wouldn’t get much out of anything. The only evidence we seemed to have that even resembled evidence was the food in the trashcan and whatever Borys collected. I had a hunch he didn’t have much either. This seemed far too planned for this to be any ritual. I walked into the bedroom where he was and popped my head in the door. “What do you say? Should we call it for lunch? It doesn’t seem like we’re going to find anything else.”

Borys continued to look but he had found nothing. The woman's closet didn't even have any cloths in it and that disturbed him. Did she know what was going to happen and plan to skip town? He shook his head and looked at her giving her a simple "Yes" nod. He followed after her and kept the picture in his pocket which would help them maybe. This wasn't just any ritual, this was way to organized and way to neatly done. When he thought about it, the placing off the body was just odd. These things were to take place in a hidden place but its almost as if the body was supposed to be found. He shut these thoughts away and whistled for Harris and followed her still clueless as they had on real leads. The info they could get from the kids would be vital if they were alive. He didn't even know their names but maybe her parents knew.

None of it fit. From what I could tell, her whole apartment had been cleaned out aside from the food in the trashcan. The three of us got into the car and I headed to a restaurant where we could eat outside as well as have a dog. It wasn’t far and it was good food. After this case, I was going to need some comfort food.

We arrived at the restaurant and we waited until one of the waiters could seat us. The woman looked at me and then at Harris. “I’m sorry. We don’t allow dogs here.” I smiled at her. She must have been new because I knew the owner personally. Thankfully, she noticed me from the back and walked up front.

“Hello Miss Johnson. Good to see you again.” The elderly woman looked down at Harris and smiled even bigger. “And I see you got another dog.”

“Oh no. Harris isn’t mine. He’s Borys’ dog. Mine’s still at home. We just came for some good food.”
I stated. The woman looked at me and then at Borys. I could tell she was making assumptions that were obviously wrong.

“Well, I’ll seat you and your boyfriend outside.” She smiled and walked away before I could correct her. We were seated outside underneath an umbrella and she left us with our menus.

“Sorry about that.” I apologized. “She’s like my mom out here, believe it or not.”
