It’s in the eyes of the children
As they leave for the very first time
And it’s in the heart of the soldier
As he takes a bullet on the front line
It’s in the face of a mother
As she takes the force of a blow
And its in the hands of the father yeah
As he works his fingers to the bone yeah

I’m standing under a white flag oh
Can you see me oh, can you see me oh
I’m standing for everything we have oh
Can you hear me oh, can you hear me

This is why we do it this is worth the pain
This is why we bow down and get back up again
This is where the heart lies, this is from above
Love is this, this is love

Love is why we do it love is worth the pain
Love is why we fall down, get back up again
Love is where the heart lies love is from above
Love is this, this is love

This is love. . .

It’s in the soul of a city
What it does after it crumbles and burns
And it’s in the blood of a hero
To know where he goes he may never return yeah

I’m standing under a white flag oh
Can you see me oh, can you see me oooh
I’m standing for everything we have oh
Can you hear me oh, can you hear me

This is why we do it this is worth the pain
This is why we bow down, get back up again
This is where the heart lies this is from above
Love is this, this is love
Love is why we do it love is worth the pain
Love is why we fall down, get back up again
Love is where the heart lies love is from above
Love is this, this is love

This is love, this is love ..

If you could be anywhere that you wanted to be
With anyone that you wanted to be with
Do anything that you wanted to do
What would it be and who would it be with you
Time flies but you’re the pilot
It moves real fast but you’re the driver
You may crash and burn sometimes

This is why we do it this is worth the pain
This is where we bow down get back up again

The life of a mercenary in the 14th century, not an easy task. Battles and blood paint their hands only for them to go home to their loves and promises of wine and good food. Those who don't have the pride of one, look down and scorn at theses bands as they are just looked at as greedy, selfish men just looking for a job. The promise of women, wine, and good food had tinted the views of others upon them, but if you had the pride they did though or saw things as they did, there was more behind the wielder of the weapons. Some men were born as nobles but then lost their easy lives, some joined into it to feed for their families, and then there were people who were just born into the world of mercenaries. These souls were usually the last to die, and the slowest to. It was a curse for their skills. Cole was one of those children.

His birthdate was lost, his father was killed on the battle field as a knight and his mother was killed as well while she tried to help the women escape the castle that was being destroyed. During her escape, an arrow killed her and she fell dead on the ground with infant Cole crying in her arms as he was soaked in her blood and the cold, late fall rain. He wasn't to survive. Though by shear luck, he was taken in by a group of assassins, bounty hunters, and mercenaries, he was raised by the leader's wife with her two year old, Bryce. Since he was strong enough to pick up a blade, Alexander, Bryce's father, trained Cole hard. He didn't like the child honestly due to the fact that the young boy had already defied death, he shouldn't have lasted much longer. Yet, he still did.
By the time he was eight, he was on the battle field's front lines going after men on stealth missions or what ever else that Alexander sent him on. His life wasn't easy at all as soon he already had scars from deep wounds that, once again, should have killed him. The child seemed to be born to fight and wouldn't be killed by it. As if he was determined to see this child's death and break his spirit, he sent a man to capture and beat him. He came out again barely alive only to have Bryce help his brother back onto his feet again and train more. A week later, Bryce was killed in combat, Alexander was almost killed, and his mother was taken as a prisiner never to be seen again. His world was unraveling leaving him only with the enraged Alexander blaming him and his bad luck. One night, he attacked him. Cole was terrified and went back after him only to kill his father then eventually almost his whole camp when he was ten. From there, he fled with multiple wounds, arrows shot into his body.
After falling into a river, he passed out only to wake up to new faces. He stayed with his new group of mercenaries called the Nightmares while he healed and recovered. Soon, they found him valuable and he became very important for them, it only lasted two years. He was payed off to another mercenary group to do a job and joined with them. It lasted for three years. He did this three more times after. He'd jumped around groups all his life, only to face death again. After a major fight, he was stabbed almost through the heart and he collapsed after blood loss and shock only to be picked up again by the Black Wolves.

A young girl though, _____, was born as the only girl out of five children. She grew up as a guy practically taken care of the farm with her older brothers and just living the poor life. Then the Black Wolves came into town and completely destroyed everything that stood in their way and the possibility of money and riches that led them on their destruction and to the castle of the cruel lord. In the end of the fierce battle, practically nothing was left. The town was on fire, her family was killed for attacking back with her only having survived because her mother had hidden her in the cellar. When she emerged to find everything she loved dead, she herself went for revenge.
The young ten year old chased after them and waited for her change before attacking him with the sword she'd stolen from a fallen guards man. When she attacked, she was stopped by a few of his men about to strike her down for attacking when he stopped them. She grew even more furious and went after him when they stopped and he easily disarmed her, but when she'd fallen, the leader--Lorance--picked her up again and took _____ in. For the longest time, he trained her in anything she wanted and used that to try to kill him. She never succeeded but instead he became the father figure she'd lost. Quickly, she climbed the ladder of rank to one of the top soldiers despite her being a female. Now at his side, she helped lead the Black Wolves into many more victories in her young adult years. Everything was perfect until they found a man nearly dead laying on the ground.

The men of the Black Wolves found Cole first laying on his stomach with blood running away from him in the darkness of a storm. From the second they saw him, they knew there was something different about him. Lorance had him treated for his wounds, and wanted him to stay. When Cole regained consciousness, he was informed of this and refused. The deal was over a battle where he was badly wounded all over again and forced to stay with the Black Wolves. For many more years, he fought with them and quickly gained ranks and soon was just sitting below _____. Unfortunately though, neither ever got along. His heart had been hardened by betrayal, war, and pain. He didn't care about anything besides fighting any more. That was all about to change though.
In a battle, the Black Wolves were hired to kill off the other group of men. The leader was about to kill her, he was twice her size and had knocked her down to the ground badly wounded. She was about do be killed when Cole stepped in and blocked the attack trying to give her time to escape as he tried to pull her up on his horse, she collapsed though before he could get to her. He tried to help, but he was shot down by arrows and fell over a cliff unthought to survive. Now, _____ was sick, he was badly wounded, and they were in enemy territory with them being looked for by both groups of men. Would they survive or would her pride and his stone heart be the death of them?

This will begun at the start of the fight.

Nothing of Kara’s body gave the secret of her presence away to the soldiers loitering mere feet away. Some were going about the task of preparing their camp, though most were lounging about in a state of half wakefulness, all tired from a day’s worth of travel. Pitiful. The Black Wolves would never allow such slovenliness to exist amongst their ranks. Each member had a part to play and they performed well - or they didn’t last long within the mercenary group. And there was only one way with which to leave their numbers so failure simply wasn’t an option.

The scent of unwashed bodies and cooking meat drifted on the air to harass her though the young assassin refused to be distracted. The horses had, had their tack removed though no one had come forward to rub
them down or provide them adequate food. Even in their own exhausted states, the animals pawned nervously at the ground though their owners paid them no heed. Even the animals had more sense than their witless masters for they at least seemed to realize the danger that lurked in the shadows.

Kara eyed he sky once more, nodding to herself that it was almost time. Just past twilight, the shadows working to their advantage to hide their forms and offer them the benefit of surprise. From the corner of her eye she saw Cole twitching in anticipation while he held himself in check though his movements didn’t betray their location any more than her own. She knew he would be anxious to commence with their attack and she briefly considered holding back a bit longer, just to irk him. The truth however was that she
just as impatient as he was - and if provoked she couldn’t be entirely sure he wouldn’t simply disregard her orders and initiate the attack himself.

Without further adieu she lifted a small pipe to her lips and blew a sharp puff of air, aiming at the wide flank of one of the horses. Her aim was true and the tiny projectile sunk home in the poor animal’s flesh. It wasn’t poisoned and was only designed to cause a flare of pain but a more lasting panic. The dart performed admirably and the horse whinnied in alarm, rearing up and causing its mates to follow suit. Immediately the camp’s attention was drawn to the wild animals and that’s when Kara struck.

Slipping the few feet from the shadows so that she was situation behind the male with the offensive odour she simply brought her dagger forward and cut his throat from ear to ear. Efficiency was the name of the game tonight. She knew no further signal would be required for her companions to bring their own brand of havok to the unsuspecting group of men.

The promised raid before Cade made him fight back the urge to just go. He just wanted to fight. That was all he was good for, and he was fine with that. These men before him though, made him step back a second and realize, this was easy. Why were they doing this again? This band of soldiers couldn't pass as anything to them. Then he had to remind himself what they were getting payed to do this. It was a pretty good sum, so then again, why complain? He shifted ever so slightly as he crouched on the ground giving his foot a chance to wake up as it had fallen asleep leaving it to tingle and irritate him more. Better to be irritated than asleep. His hands tightened around the handle of his blade watching Kara peer into the sky, probably waiting for it to tell her when to take off. To him though, it was just a thing standing in the way of what he wanted.

The second Kara started moving, he'd already went twice that distance towards one of the back men. He sliced strait through the man's chest taking out his heart and his lung with odd red blade. After they were alerted though, he let out a piercing whistle and every other man who hadn't already charged came out of the side, his raid. Cole continued to just run forward cutting through armor, tents, what every stood between him and someone's death. Not much emotion stayed on his face as he went through the men like butter not giving them a chance to strike back. Ah, the rewards of keeping your blade well taken care of. With every other man at his sides, it didn't take long to go half way through the large camp. What was left, it was Lorance's responsibility, only problem was, he got the larger half, the better half of the army. That side held all the brutes that were just as good as he was, killing off a good few of their men.

He scowled at it, but didn't do much more about it. It happened, they all knew this, and it was their day to die apparently, no use of crying over what already happened. Cole charged forward again once his temporary daze had been lifted as he dodged and arrow that nearly grazed his skin, but only ruffled his coat a little bit and made his eyes narrow. A new target. Without a second though, the went from one man to another charging up the middle before hitting home and slicing off the attacker's head letting it roll in the grass continuing to paint the death landscape. Still, even with the enjoyment of killing, he still stopped to pick up the arrow then looked at he arrow only to snap it in half finding the tips having something on it, probably poison. Great, just great.

Kara was in her element and didn’t hesitate to cut down those in her path. Where Cole was a stalking predator like the barbarians of old she was a wraith, slipping from one target to another, almost gliding and dancing about on the balls of her feet. She never stopped to consider if these men had families or loved ones at home who would mourn their passing - she had laid that part of her conscience to rest a long time ago and thought only of the goal before her - to ensure that every single man in this camp slipped to the other side with as little damage to their own ranks as possible.

Part of her mind registered what was going on around her though it was muted, as though she was seeing it through coloured glass - enough to warn her of potential dangers but not enough to distract her. And so she
saw Cole gather up the felled arrow and give it a look of contempt. She knew him well enough to assume it meant their enemies were employing methods more sinister than his own straight forward tactics. Ah poison. Now that was her forte. Hopefully the cover of darkness was thick enough to obscure the archers’ aim enough to spare them the trouble of being poisoned.

As an overly large bear of a man hacked down two of her companions and bellowed challenges to any who would heed them she took him to be their mark of interest. The leader of this motley crew. Quickly her mind took him his fighting style - light on the finesse and heavy on the brute strength. She could work with that. Darting forward she was careful not to slip on the blood that now soaked the area and added a further
hazard to their impromptu battlefield. Coming up to flank the leader from behind she made a quick stab for his vital organs only to be foiled by the thrown together armour that consisted of pieces of chain mail, leather and hide. Furrowing her brow she drew a second dagger and set to the task of locating a weak spot and finding purchase for one of her weapons.

As agile as she was, Kara somehow missed the elbow the frothing male threw back at her, a sharp edge of his piecemeal armour clipping the side of her head and throwing her back. Immediately she had to fight the urge to vomit began to struggle to her feet, though she was far from steady and kept blinking her eyes to try and clear her vision. She didn’t have time right now to curse her lack of foresight into his erratic movements and only had one thought prevalent in her mind. Get up before he kills you.

Cole didn't really focus on anything until he heard more of his men get cut in half. He snarled again and let out a savage roar and cut down a larger man. It took him a second before he recognized the woman who was laying on the ground, Kara. He glared over at her and bit his lip hard and continued to fight through the stronger men. He had a war to fight, he didn't have time to rescue women. She was his commanding officer though, it was his job, his responsibility. With this in mind he leapt forward after them again snarling angrily cutting past a few men becoming smothered in their blood and his shoulder armor being scratched a little bit on the way. He leapt up seeing the man swing down at her making him snarl and leap in front of her.

Just as it started to come down, Cole was under the blade with it caught against his. He gritted his teeth and snarled holding it with his body shaking from the strain. "What are you waiting for, move!" he roared back at her as he fought to push the man back. He eventually freed his blade with it sliding off his and landed just a few inches from her. He coughed a little bit and then charged forward with his blade being caught surprised at how fast the man was even with how big he was. Then again, he was fast, but not nearly that size. He ducked under his blade as he swung again slamming his shoulder into him snarling as he shoved against him throwing his sword at him, even in the short space though, he blocked his attack.

He grabbed his sword and threw him backwards and cut into Cole's side making him snarl, but he didn't let up. He got up again to attack and was about to kill him when several arrows punctured his coat making him stutter but not stop as he killed the man. He turned to Kara to grab her and run if possible. The Black Wolves were doing fine, but the problem was they still needed to get out of here.

Kara knew her survival depended on her ability to get up and move as Cole so eloquently phrased it. None the less it still took her precious moment to regain her equilibrium and the ability to move without falling flat on her face. She wasn’t too dazed to not realize that he had very clearly saved her life and she was processing this inconvenient fact when he was struck from behind by three arrows. Bloody hell! Did the arches have the damn eyesight of cats? When Cole moved to grab her after dispatching the burly leader, she staggered along after him.

With the gash in his side she felt as though he was leaning as much upon her as she was him - not a good sign for her men when their leader and second-in-command were both in dire straights. They didn’t work
for glory, they worked for coin and their mission here was complete with the leader taken care of. She tried to whistle sharply to indicate a swift retreat, but the action caused her to feel faint once again. It took two more tries but she finally managed the signal, their troupe responding immediately and falling back in co-ordinated segments. She didn’t have time to feel satisfaction at their organization though because they were far from out of the danger zone.

Kara was having a hard time truly focusing and a dark suspicion began to creep into the back of her mind. Had the b*****d poisoned his armour?! She herself did so on the off chance that she was either killed or captured - a sort of last laugh to her captors/executioners but she knew it wasn’t a widely practiced tactic.
Too many feared poisoning themselves in the process. She was almost as skilled in toxicology as she was in her more stealthy pursuits and knew to recognize the signs. As ill as she felt she didn’t think she could entirely lay the nausea at her head wound’s doorstep. Damn and double damn.

As they pulled away from the fray both Cole and herself found themselves at a cliff’s edge with some sparse shelter of brush to the side and their enemies at their back. She knew she should take charge of the situation but she was having difficulty pulling her thoughts together at the moment. If they could just rest for a minute she would be able to root through her utility belt and most likely counter the effects - but unfortunately minutes were not something they had in abundance. ”Cole - where?” In her own mind her voice sounded faint and watery - hopefully she had made more of an impression on her companion.

Cole wrapped his arm around her waist holding her close when they stopped moving. He glared back into the darkness able to see from the tents that were ablaze watching the men flee after her whistle fallowing their instructions to the letter like they were to. He bit his lip and glared around holding his blade up and breathing heavily from the stress of everything combined. His vision was blurring as well as spots came into his vision making it harder and harder to see. He bit his lip hard and shuttered again but stayed tall. "I don't know," he said finally panting heavily as he slowly shifted his weight so he could hold her more feeling her become heavier. He was in trouble, big trouble, and it seemed like that cliff was gonna be the only chance of survival.

He wasn't seriously considering it until another man swung his blade at him and Cole caught it pushing him back. His heals were over the cliff taking away most of his balance as he leaned forward on the balls of his feet. He snarled and pushed back, only to be hit harder by a second swing and knocked backwards. Stun and frustration filled his face. Stunned because he was now possibly going to fall to his death, frustrated because he was bringing Kara down with him! Without thinking, he pulled her close and wrapped himself around her seconds before they hit the freezing water and then smashed into the rocky bottom as the current tried to pull them away. Everything went black once he hit with only his other sense to rely on. He dug deep into the rocks eventually and pushed off hard reaching out and pulling himself up onto the shore.

Coughing heavily, a mix of blood and water came out of his lungs as he started violently shaking in the cold air from the water. He laid Kara down gently on the ground seeing her to be soaked as well of course, but didn't see any wounds besides the gash on her forehead that was bleeding badly down her face. "s**t," he hissed and leaned down over her listening to her waiting to hear her breath, honestly, this was the most panicked he'd been in a while. He hated being responsible for another being, he just hated it.

Kara was not feeling very optimistic when Cole replied that he wasn’t sure where to go from here either. She didn’t even hear the enemy approach when he suddenly burst forward and attacked them - thankfully Cole had been more alert and was able to fend him off. That she was so oblivious when in enemy territory was not a good sign - far from it. And then without warning she was suddenly shoved violently forward and then free falling. Her eyes immediately became dry from the rushing wind the ripped at her face and then it was all suddenly gone as she was wrapped up in Cole’s arms. Much as he frustrated her most time, both during training and out in the field she would be the first to admit (to herself at least) that he could always be counted upon when needed.

Any further thoughts were quickly wiped from her mind however when they crashed into the water below
Any further thoughts were quickly wiped from her mind however when they crashed into the water below and the current almost tore them apart in its mad desire to bring them headlong down the banks. She clung to him desperately and tried to find her feet but kept having her body scrape along the riverbed. At one point she was thrown up against a larger rock and she could feel her shoulder want to dislocate - but then Cole was pulling her free from the water and summing up their situation with his one eloquent comment.

As he leaned over her she suddenly sat up, causing their heads to collide and her to wince at the sudden pain. The water had done wonders to clear her head, causing her to believe that the poison used was a mild one, something her body would probably be able to overcome without the aid of her antidotes. Pressing her
hand on his shoulder she pushed him to the side so she could raise herself into a sitting position, spitting out river water in the process. ”Ugh. What a disgusting turn of events.” Squinting up at the top of the cliff she was surprised to see how far they had fallen. She couldn’t even make out the figures at the top she knew must have been there. That was good because it meant the couldn’t see them either.

”Tell me why you thought we should be separated from the others and thrown off a Cliff?” As her faculties were coming back to her, she was able to determine well enough that it was the only option that had been left to him but she was not about to show him she agreed. Or was grateful. Heaven forbid. With a tentative shake of her head she was pleased to find that the action wasn’t cause for her to lose what little lunch she had, had earlier in the day. With a sidelong glance she tried to take stock of Cole’s wounds though it would be difficult to make a fair estimation in the dark.

Cole was about to pull back, but she was faster and he snarled and growled at her glaring angrily holding the now sore part of his throbbing head. He felt so sick from a mix of probably the poison in his system and hitting the water with all the shock to mix in. He put his hand down catching himself as he was shoved to this side only to roll his eyes at her comment looking at her with frustration at her now. He shuttered badly wrapping his coat around his soaked body more relying on it to catch body heat in it to dry himself off and keep warm. His mind just kept going over where they could stay until dawn and get moving again, either that or just find something comfortable to lay in and get the arrows out that had most of their shafts broken off when it hit the bottom of the river.

"I apologize, next time I'll leave you there to get up on your own and shove you at the enemies when I fall. Would that make you happier? To die up there with the rest of your comrades?" he snarled obviously in a worse temper then he usually was with her. It wasn't that she didn't thank him, it was the fact that he felt so out of it and not nearly as able to defend himself that made him fall back onto a temper more than strength. Cole stood up and put his sword back into it's sheath on his back and started walking. If Kara decided to stay with him, that was here choice, if she didn't, once again, her choice. He was staying there until the later part of today came where he would be rested and it would be warm out. Till then, screw getting back to the Black Wolves. His job was done, and he could still get some food later when he got back.

He kept walking with that scowl on his face before he started coughing heavily again and leaned up against a tree wiping the blood from his lips and holding back the bile that burned his throat. He felt like he was going to just loose his lunch and more in a few seconds, but he swallowed hard trying to keep himself from making a scene in front of Kara. Last thing he needed was more taunts or complaints about himself at the moment. So, he pushed off the tree and kept walking through the brush as carefully as he could, but it wasn't working to well with him being so exhausted. Stupid poison just needed to get the hell out of his system!

Kara felt a spiteful pleasure at his uncharastically eruptive response to her taunting. It was quickly wiped away though when after reaching his feet unsteadily he was affected by wracking coughs that caused spasms throughout his body. The fact that he obviously needed the support of the tree to remain upright gave her pause as well. Finding her own feet took a moment and all of a sudden she was shivering from head to toe, the crisp night air enveloping her water soaked body. Pushing ahead to catch up to him she eyed him moremore critically than she had previously. Before she could inquire as to his health he was off again. As he made for who knew where she saw the ends of the arrows protruding through the tears in his cloak. That had to be excruciating, each step causing them to irritate the what she was sure already painful wound. Reaching out she laid her hand on his shoulder, pulling him to a stop. ”You are more medically accomplished than me - tell me the truth. Should we remove those before we carry on?”

As frustrating as she found him she could rely on him to tell her the truth when push came to shove and right now she considered it pretty damn important that he own up to the extent of his injuries. She expected her men to be able to shoulder a certain amount of punishment without complaint - she demanded no less of them than of herself. Alternatively she also insisted that they alert her when it passed the point of acceptability. If Cole was masking the extent of his injuries she wouldn’t take to it well.

Cole kept walking ignoring her as she fallowed him since his mind was going to the probability of a cave some where. Then, he would stop, if he stopped now, he would fall. He practically groaned when she touched him and he stopped looking back at her standing tall from pride as she inquired him about his health. He swore under his breath and kept walking but he wasn't going to leave her unanswered. "I'm leaving them in, the poison is already in my system so taking them out wouldn't do anything. If I did though, I would probably bleed to death unless I get some bandages on me. If I stop moving, I'm going to pass out," he said and kept walking. That was his final word and she wasn't about to stop him. He pressed on even quicker now panting slightly with him quickly loosing stamina obviously as he shuttered badly feeling his stomach's bile come up more and more with him only swallowing it down again.

It went on like this for another ten minutes, any inquires Kara made were ignored and he just kept walking, but then he saw his goal, the over grown cave that he'd thought he saw on a map. He pulled his sword out with great difficulty snarling and swung it only once as he was only able to manage one. He then just pushed through it ripping into a lot of it before he just sunk down on his side still shivering from how cold it was. He then slowly forced himself to sit up snarling at everything and slowly pulled off his coat letting out a painful gasp. He then snarled and clenched down on his side a little bit before slowly letting up. The deep tears in his clothing left blood to run down his pants and cover his body in the rich, blood. He pulled off his gloves as well then, his sword. Bile came up into his mouth again he only swallowed again, and laid down on his unwounded side. Nothing formed when he tried to speak, so he didn't try and just laid there relaxing a little bit, but the pain kept him awake as he thought.

Kara was satisfied with his answer - for now. It was true he was more accomplished medically than herself though she knew she had the edge where toxins were concerned. She didn’t bother with any further discussions while he led them on, though she did note each time he winces, sucked in his breath or seemed to fight the urge to be nauseous. Walking was brining up her temperature though the cool air and wet clothes that continued to cling to her did and admirable job of ensuring it wasn’t enough to warm her.

When they reached the cave she stepped back and allowed for Cole to grunt and tear at the concealing vines until they had room enough to push past and enter. As Cole moved to his side , Kara moved to lower herself beside him. And began to inspect his wounds. With a glower that spoke volumes of what she would do should he attempt to stop her, verbally or otherwise she was careful not to touch him, though she kept her gloves on in case of accidental contact. ”You’ll have to do your best to tell me what your symptoms are and we’ll work towards an antidote if one is to be had.” Kara could do many things with poisons, including cure their effects but she wasn’t a mind reader and the punctures with the broken arrows sticking free were too blood covered to determine if their was any blackening of the skin or other clues. As usual when addressing Cole she didn’t use his given name, something she had never done since their acquaintance years ago.
