Video games are toys. When did gaming become hardcore and s**t? You're playing with toys, the same as Legos or action figures. It's for fun and nothing else.

Hardcore gaming is kind of an oxymoron when I think about it.

Gaming is and can be more than just playtime toys, though. We play games to have fun, but more and more people are trying to play games to have a compelling experience, and trying to smash their TV/movie dramas into games. And that's totally respectable, but there's nothing wrong with comparing gaming to toys, because we (and by that I mean the N-Cult) play games most of the time TO have fun, and to enjoy ourselves. Sometimes we go for a game with a compelling story, but generally games are meant to be fun, and in that manner, they are like toys. But not all video games are meant for children, which toys are generally seen as being made exclusively for.
It's a shame, because toys are fun. Adults that buy figures usually buy them for display only, and call them "figures" (like I just did) and that's about it. Socialization doesn't allow us to grow up and keep enjoying the same things, but gaming is one of the things we didn't let them take from us, because it's THE thing that our generation had that previous generations didn't have. Sure, it's been a rocky relationship, as people have tried to say games are for kids, but they're coming into themselves, just as music and movies did before them.

It's sad to think that I've just grown accustomed to these kind of arguments as a pro-Nintendo fan.
