Just Us
In that crucial moment when your realize that inevitably you will die, what do you do? When you have no family, no friends and only one other person to turn to, do you fall to your knees and pray, or do you seek out the meaning of your existence? Do you allow your mind to race with thoughts of depression, weakness and suicide? Or do you bite the bullet and try to make the most of your life? When your time is on it's last few trickles, what do you do?
Do you indulge in the one person you care for the most, or do you leave them behind to search hopelessly for your meaning in life? It's Just you. Just them.

Just Us "There's Orion...Rigel and Saiph make up the feet. Bellatrix and Betelgeuse make up the shoulders..." Through what appeared to be a raven black tuft gazed the dark blue eyes of the nature man. His right arm was lifted and his index finger was extended in a path relative to the star of Orion's shoulder. Upon the thick limb of the massive redwood tree, he lay with only other person he knew he could connect with on more than one level. His eyes wheeled to her and he grinned and the bridge of his nose wrinkled as he bit back a light chuckle. "The three stars that make up the belt...I'll never remember them. The order anyway. Any constellations you can pick out Aimee? I can't seem to find the Big Dipper anywhere this evening."
At the base of the thick redwood was a town that once bustled heavily with commerce, trade and entertainment. Now all the was left were destroyed buildings and shards of glass that reflected the light of the moon in a beautiful yet sorrowful glimmer. The devastation wasn't the fault of these two though. No, instead it was the end result of a bombing that took place only a few months ago. On the outskirts of this town was quarantine line that was meant to keep people like Aimee and Ben in. The two had organized a plan to vanish from this area tomorrow. Tonight was the only night of peace they had left. No need to waste it fighting men in suits when the stars were out...

"There." The metallic gaze of the girl seemed to dart from Ben back to the stars, as if trying to read hidden text in the heavens. Her arm raised up towards the velvet night sky, showing the location of the Big Dipper with her slender finger. Then as if slowly making pictures from the stars, her eyes light up with the sign of remembrance. "Pegasus, the winged company of Hercules. You think a savior like that wouldn't need a winged horse of all things." She scoffed at the idea, brushing her blonde hair out of her lavender eyes. Aimee was enjoying the night, her first time in years just to lay down and relax, to not worry, especially with how bad they were off. Then as a reflex, she looked at Ben, her eyes filled with the abyss of emotions that she barely felt. "Some say you can see your future in the stars, the way they are a-lined. If they a-line just right, you could have what your heart desires, your one wish..." Her voice trailed off to nothing, her eyes now closed as if she was wishing on a star herself. "If only it were true, Ben."

"Maybe the guy can't fly? Never know with these demigods..." Benecio relished in a quick laugh, then averted his gaze towards the constellation Aimee had selected. Around the set of stars were hundreds upon thousands of others which blazed with a passionate glow. The dark haired teen knew that this night was theirs. Not by obligation, but as a gift. Something to relax their minds with before the waking hours which the young man knew would be filled with much unneeded conflict. His pale lips, which were stretched lengthily into a rather warm grin was scrunched into a sour scowl. "Wishes....they are true. Circumstances ruin those dreams though Aimee." Angrily, Benicio's fist clenched and his knuckles creaked and cracked in a sharp, echoing battle cry. "Things will change soon. Starting tomorrow hopefully. If we're lucky, we'll get out of this zone and get closer to a cure for us. Til then....I guess we are stuck wishing."

The girl's muscles tensed as she heard the cracking of Ben's knuckles, her eyes trailing off of him to look the opposite direction. Aimee sat up slowly, her blonde hair slowly sliding down her back, her leg swinging off the side of the branch as a nervous twitch. Her pale skin shown bright in the moonlight, giving her a goddess type of glow. "It will all be over soon, no matter how tomorrow turns out..." The sad truth in her voice seemed to seep into her bones, making her shiver with the ideas that now came to mind. "As long as we do it together, I am sure we will find that cure." She looked at Ben with her bright lavender eyes that sparkled with hope, something they both needed at the moment. Her gaze was then averted to the ground below, the city they once called home, the place they would die if they didn't get out. "Not even 5 months ago this place was the center of life... Now look at it. Glass isn't the only thing that is shattered around here anymore..."

"The hopes and dreams of all young and old...hmph." Benecio's sight was now against the glass that lined the streets. One should only have to see the twinkle of a star against the somber backdrop of the night sky. The portrait was meant only for the heavens. Instead, when the two teens found themselves glancing down at town beneath them, they were met with the same picture albeit with a more darker undertone. There were tattered clothes strewn about the area and the stores and shops were now just broken remnants of what they used to be. The nature man was and forever will be taken aback by the efforts of a few scared suits to remove what they believed was a disease.
"Yeah. As long as we're together Aimee. We'll--we'll figure something out for ourselves," said the dark haired boy, his voice lacking the drive and hope that once echoed within him months ago. He was still confident though. It was only his resolve that brought such a stern tone out of him. Looking over to the blonde beauty by his side now, he grinned and his fist unclenched. "You seem to be glowing...sign of good luck? Anyway. would you like to go for a walk? I can't offer a view, but I can offer good company." Relinquishing a smile to the young lady, Ben extended his hand to the girl before prepping their means of getting down.

Aimee looked from the disaster torn streets to the bright eyes of the dark haired youth next to her, a small smile came across her thin, pale lips as she did. "A walk sounds lovely. The last walk in this desolate place... it gives me hope that we will get out of here." She nodded her head over the fence to the unknown darkness, taking her friend's hand soon after she did. "And that glow is the remaining hope I have... I am glad to share it with you, Ben." Her hand seemed to tighten around his as a sign of longing, the want to be cured and to be free of torment, which didn't seem to be in reach for either of them just yet. Her smile started to fade, her lavender eyes welled up with emotions about everything in their lives. She never was one to show the emotions, but if anything went wrong tomorrow, they wouldn't see each other again, and that pained her more than anything.

Benicio hastily made his way to the ground where the reminders of the not so distant past densely littered the streets. It was obvious that a powerful and destructive force had ran rampant in these streets not sparing anyone or anything. Memory was now just another trap. What the young teenager witnessed were things he knew grown man would cringe, buckle and shatter over. Only the most heartless of heartless wouldn't shed a tear over this....this madness. Aimee's tightening grip withdrew Ben from the lull of the landscape. His attention was now on her and the tears that were welling in her eyes. "Aimee, I---please don't speak like that..." replied the dark haired vagrant as the tree behind him reverted into a simple acorn, "Remaining hope? Tomorrow is the day of hope. A day of promise infinite. Keep your spirit Aimee. We can do this." Punctuating his small speech with a grin, Benicio began to walk onward stepping over dead bodies, broken doors and destroyed furniture. If this was hell, then it wasn't bad at all. As long as Aimee was close, he knew things would always look up. They just had too...

Aimee looked away from Ben's smile lit face, wiping her eyes on the sleeve of her shirt. Her mind began to wonder to the hope, the slendor of being free and rid of this horrible hell. She was pulled out of her thoughts as she saw a dead body, walking closer to Ben. Aimee has always been scared of the dead, the way their eyes seemed lifeless but begging to remember them. "Who would do such a thing?" Her voice had lowered to a strained whisper that cracked at the end with sorrow. Aimee looked up at the sky that seemed like the only thing that hadn't been destroyed, her hopes growing along with a smile on her face. "I feel like as long as we are together, I can do anything or go anywhere." Aimee averted her gaze from the stars to Ben, playfully hitting his arm with her shoulder.

"The people I pray we do not see tomorrow..." replied Ben, his voice snapping with latent rage. For Aimee's sake, not meeting up with the men in suits was the ideal path. Ben personally relished the idea of fighting against them again. If not to live, then just to show that even the sick weren't people who could be trampled over. Continuing to walk onward in dark shoes that were worn in so badly, the soles and inner lining were all but missing, Benicio nodded in sheer disagreement. Only when Aimee nudged him did his mind cease replaying images he wished he could forget. "Well, you're right. Together we can go far. We will go far. In fact, where do you want to go?" asked the man of nature before tickling to young woman's sides and her neck. "We can go here, there or anywhere and do whatever we like!"

Aimee was caught off guard when Ben tickled her, making her flinch out of the way of is hands and almost tripping over a broken axle of a car. She smiled a little, a small giggle was released from her lips as she walked beside Ben again. Her mind began to think about where they could go, some place that was better than this, well any place was better than this. "Somewhere where there are ice cream shops and malls! Where there are people, tons and tons of people." Her smile grew bigger in the delight of the thought of people being around them. She hadn't seen a living soul who wasn't either Ben or the men in the coats for the last couple of months. Aimee jumped onto a broken down beam in the stream, moving to the metal to carry her ahead of the dark haired boy. She jumped off and turned around, looking at Ben with a bright smile. "Where do you want to go? What do you want to do when we get out?" Her bright eyes seemed curious about Ben's answer, she knew the only way to keep his mind off of the horrors was so talk to him about the good things.

"Yeah, somewhere over the rainbow right? And malls....I miss those. Movies and shopping centers. Filled with people." Ben snickered happily although his eyes darkly lit eyes still seemed to suggest that his emotions were elsewhere. Focusing on Aimee and he smile now, the dark haired boy knew he couldn't do anything but smile as well. Her presence shined like a beacon at the end of the long, cold tunnel. Her glow warmed him and his waning spirits. Without her, he'd have surely done something reckless a long, long time ago. Stepping over more broken, fractured obstacles, Benicio went on to say, "Maybe if we can find a working grocery store, we can make our own ice cream. We should find one! And to answer your question, I want to go...home. Or at least a place that I can call home. With you of course. Someplace peaceful you know? Away from the the stench of dead rotting corpses."

Aimee watched the way Ben looked at her and looked down in an attempt to hide the red tint that had formed on her cheeks, stepping over a dead body. Her attention turned towards an intersection that was filled with cars, listening to the words coming from the dark haired boy beside her. "With me? Do you think we could live in a subdivision? A nice house? A pool maybe?" Her eyes lit up at the thought of all the things she had been deprived of as a child. A working home was the first thing she wanted when she got out, a place full of warmth. The blonde haired girl climbed up onto the cars, bending the roofs to make a look out over the desecrated city. She looked around until she saw lights flickering from a store not far from their location, a grocery store that she knew would have ice cream. "I see a place with lights flickering that might have ice cream. Let's head that way." She jumped down from her perch, walking down the street towards their destination, not knowing what they would find especially since this place had been destroyed for so long.
