The drunk herald is well known for her fire temper and lack of alchoholic restraint. Ember's dependency on Alchohol is the only thing that keeps her in check in this world, her history? a mystery, her life? a jest. How did things become this way for her? Did she ever live happily? why does she drown her sorrows and depression? she had a husband once... she cant quite remember, since passing her abilities on to her apprentice she now retraces the memories long suppressed by her habit/addiction. His name? His age? His profession? The memories she tried to forget now force their way to the surface, and she finds herself flooded in broken memories.

The story of Ember's deceased life now plays out, beginning in the 1940's.

Sleepless nights often left Ember tossing and turning in the house de scythe. Currently occupied by the Saxton family. She had recently saved the young Daryle's life by handing over a portion of her powers to make him her apprentice, a choice she had never really intended to make, It just happened.

The young man was very diffrent she knew, he would be a good choice for her postion, that wasn't the unsettling part, it was the sober mind she was quickly gaining pushing memories into her head of years long lost. happy times, and carefree moments, confusing times and others where she might have lost her temper... she wanted to forget, each memory lightened her heart and made her drop deep into a depression, they made her laugh and cry, but in the end, she knew the conclusion, she just did not want to face it.

*************************************************************

Ember was a whore, no question about it, people called them courtesans, or companions, but the best way to describe her job in the 1940's was Whore, working in a whore house, the Entourage Gentleman's club boasted more red heads than any other, Ember was no acception. it was not legal the actual buisness of selling ones body, but to kiss up to men all the time and entertain thier "desires" was pretty much the same to Ember. Even the other girls in the dressing rooms were well aware of this fact, althought they liked to deny it in their pretty little heads.
"they have reopened Angi's case" a murmmer came from the girls behind her and Ember stopped painting her eye lashes to listen slightly.
"but the police ruled it was a suicide"
"oh hell woman, we all know it wasn't suicide, i mean just two days before she dissapeared she was talking about getting a job at a salon a few towns away"
"yes, it was one of her regulars wasn't it"
"I certainly know who it was"
"Really?"
Ember sighed and turned away, she knew who it was too, but didn't think she really needed to worry, he had vanished for a time after Angi's death, probably in remorse or just to get away while the police worked it out, he would not be back unless he was just that stupid. he did have one ace up his sleeve, his pockets were deep, if he did want to come back, some of these girls would probably be desperate enough to take him on as a client, despite the murder under his belt.

"Hey Callahan, still looking for that lost dog for that old lady?" The bartender asked the private investigator who sat down in front of him. Cyril Callahan sighed and shook his head. "No Harry, I'm working a different case now." The bartender chuckled and set a glass of water in front of the P.I. and replied, "Oh really? What are you looking for this time? A lost cat?" The bartender laughed, and Cyril sighed, he knew it was a bad idea taking that case, the way things were going, he'd never hear the end of it. "No Harry, this is much bigger. A murder case. Someone you know in fact." The bartender paused in cleaning his glasses with a towel to listen more closely, replying, "Oh really? And who's the stiff?" Cyril scoffed at the bartender's question, who did he know who had died recently? "Yep. Her name's Angela Deschaines, I think you know her here as Angi."

The bartender nearly dropped his glass when Cyril mentioned her name. He looked speechless, and a bit shocked. "Yeah yeah, I know, they closed the case and ruled it a suicide, but no one really believes that. So I'm gonna need some of your cooperation if I'm gonna catch this guy alright?" The bartender nodded and Cyril took a sip of his glass of water, sighing and asking "Do you think any of the girls will mind if I ask them some questions?" The bartender thought for a few moments and replied, "No I don't think so, they all liked Angi pretty well... Except for Ember, she's always been kind of distant, but I think she'll answer any questions you have." Cyril nodded and sipped his glass of water, swiveling on his bar stool to watch the latest showgirl stepping on stage. He was in the club for a reason, so why not enjoy himself before he got started on work?

Ember finished her makeup and slipped into a complicated flashy outfit made for male pleasure as time came close for her to step out to the stage. she simply touched up her make up as she ignored the mummers around her before an older woman came to collect her for her set. Rutine she thought, adjusting the sequin slightly before following to the stage and waiting on her Que.
A little dance upon the stage, taken in time with a song and the men before her at the stage sat lazily in thier chairs looking up at her with hungry eyes, yes, this was all the same, no matter where she went, one sex attracted to the other, reproduction, a natural process, way to let off steam. Family troubles, socialy awkward, or party goers, she knew every type that was attracted to a place like this.
the right note and a shoulder strap was slipped over her shoulder. another and the other. the men were all hypnotized, a woman could control a man if they want, hands down the front of her corset and that quickly popped off, down to her undies, tights, heals, and a bra. Men were easily pleased, but when they could not be pleased what happened. A woman can control a man, only to the extent that they remain their slave. some times it did not end for the best, Angi, for example.
The last few notes removed her bra, but not her lower garments, and with howls of disappointment ember slipped away.
"good good, leave them wanting more" the older woman patted Ember on the shoulder, Harry says that a young man wants to see you by the bar, don't keep him waiting to long" the woman then looked to another of the girls to signal her turn. A customer at the bar? Great a drunk f** she sighed pulling on a black dress and to head out to the bar for Harry.
Looking to the bartender she saw him motion his head towards a well dressed young man who was settled by the bar with one drink, "you asked to see me sir?" she asked settling on the stool next to him. "welcome, new faces are some what refreshing here"

Cyril watched Ember up on stage with interest; not that kind of interest, she seemed to be very good at her job, and the type to not let anyone stand in her way. She could be trouble. Cyril was surprised when Harry asked for Ember to come over, I guess he wanted him to finger Angi's killer as fast as possible. He sipped his glass of water and waited for her to get off stage and hopefully come see him. Once the music died and she stepped off stage, Cyril turned back to the bar and sighed lightly, he could tell this case was going to be an interesting one to say the least. He turned to look at Ember as she sat down next to him, looking her up and down quickly once before saying, "Thanks, but I'm not really a new face. My name's Cyril Callahan, I have some questions to ask you about Angela Deschaines, you might know her as Angi." Cyril stopped there, normally people didn't especially like talking to cops or private detectives like him, so he took it slowly..

She sat back slightly, he was a regular, yes, she did recognize the hair, not a big spender though, so he must have been here for another purpose, "Angi? yes, the quiet red head, i knew of her, she didn't like her job much" Ember looked to Harry and tapped the fingers of the counter lightly, "The police ruled the case to be a suicide Mr Callahan, I dont think anyone would have reason to question their ruling" Harry seemed to stiffen slightly but looked to the detective and Ember before turning to washing his glass. Of course the girls in the club had their suspicions, and knew the young woman better than anyone, but some one had made sure to make the case close as easily and effectively as possible. It would not be good for another person to try and nose their way into something they could not handle. The walls had ears no matter where you went.

Cyril shrugged at Ember's comment and replied, "Police ruling or not, I was given the job, and I'm supposed to find out what really happened. If it really was a suicide, then that's what I'll tell my client." Cyril sipped his drink again and glanced at Harry, who seemed to be taking an interest in the conversation, he couldn't really blame him though. "Do you know anything about who she was talking to shortly before she died? Any boyfriends, clients, that sort of thing?" Cyril wasn't going to beat around the bush with Ember, she'd either tell him, or she wouldn't. He didn't want to play games, he just wanted to get to the bottom of things and get paid. He had to admit, however, despite her attitude, the redhead next to him was quite beautiful; she couldn't be in this business if she wasn't he figured, but there was something off about her, though he couldn't place it.

Ember listened, he did not seem to fear for his life, even though his opponent might be fairly formidable. "women say things Mr Callahan, i don't know how long you have been in this business, but yes, there is a theory among gossipers that Angi's clients were not to excited with her leaving." Ember crossed her legs and glanced up at Harry as he handed her a glass of a clear liquid. "She was planning on leaving back to her home town, she did have several clients, and hot headed regulars, any of them could have been the culprit if they did end up attacking her" she slowly sipped her drink before looking Cyril in the eyes, bright blue to contrast his dark hair, very appealing. "There are only a handful that could have pulled up enough money or contacts to rule the event a suicide though" she was not worried about listeners, easily able to take out any person who might try to remove her chit chat, but she was starting to worry about giving this young man the information he was looking for, was he that confident in his fighting skills or just stupid, "Like i said though," she looked into his eyes and shivered at the beautifully cold stare, "i would keep out of too much snooping, some clients own alot of power"

Cyril smiled a little as Ember spilled some of what she knew, though it was information that he had already guessed. He made a note of her information in his head though, it would be important to know that there could have been more than one client that was the attacker. Chuckling a little at her concern, he sipped his drink and replied, "Believe me miss, I've got enough experience to know what I'm getting into." He waved his hand dismissively and continued looking at Ember; she knew more, that much he was certain of, but would she tell him any more, was the real question. "So this handful of clients... do they have names?" Cyril knew what he was getting into, really, anyone who would try to grease an ex-cop would have quite a few angry cops on their trail; Cyril left the department on friendly terms with most of the people there. But even if they did try and get to him, he wasn't about to go quietly. But his attention was drifting, so he refocused on the beautiful redhead sitting next to him, waiting for her answer.

Ember nodded and took another sip before placing the glass down, "six" she held up six fingers for him to see, "we don't have many influential or wealthy clients that come here too often, but that i know of There are six of whom that Angi saw the entire week before her death, Two have now moved on to another named Erin, one other has given up the club and simply comes to drink, one has looked to another club for his activities, another has gone missing and the last one has taken a shine to my style. i doubt the one who has gone missing will be away too long, probably a business trip or something" she sighed and looked to the stage where they were switching up the acts again, she was not one to give him answers straight out, but she would test his patience, "Ill tell you what, if you cannot figure out who they are within the next three days ill give you a small hit at a small price" she smiled before standing, "it would not be worth the money for this job if you simply figured out the culprit right away would it?"

======Two Days Later======

Once again Cyril found himself at the bar in the club, sipping a glass of water in front of Harry. Going over his notes, he sighed, he had figured out four of the six people Ember had mentioned, but the problem was, they all had airtight alibis coinciding with Angi's death. Of course, just an alibi didn't discount them in Cyril's book, but they really did check out, he made sure of it. The other two were a problem, one of them was apparently on a business trip, and the other he wasn't about to go searching through all the clubs in the city looking for him. He hated to admit it, but he wouldn't get any further on this case without help, and since she had offered to help, he figured it'd be simple enough to accept. He turned on the stool and looked to the stage; Ember was up right now, and he had to admit, she was good at drawing in customers, him included. Granted he didn't spend any extra money, he was content just watching from the bar. He was waiting for her to get off stage so he could talk with her, no doubt all the people watching would have been jealous had it been for social reasons, and Cyril probably would be jealous of himself too.
PostPosted: Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:04 pm

Ember enjoyed a good belly dance show, the fine art of attracting men was not complete without one, a grand elegant charade of show and bedazzlement of the naturally flawless design of the female body. She enjoyed the hypnotizing affect it had on all the males no matter where they sat in the club. over the last two days she had watched subtly as the detective worked his way around the clientele, picking the exact four males that had been with Angi, before her death. His persistence had even made her smile when he had interrupted her client to ask questions. It was not normal for Ember to be attracted to any one being, having seen all kinds thought the decades, but this one she could probably use for a form of entertainment if she wished.

she hid her smile as she approached the bar, this time still in the Indian style sarong, "welcome back Mr Callahan" she smiled brightly and took a seat before him, "you did not do to bad in finding those men it seems, Im assuming you have not found your target though since you are here" she settled and took a sip of the ice water she was given. "did you like my performance?"

Cyril smiled when Ember came over of her own accord and spoke to him, she was right on the money with her guesses. He sipped his drink in silence for a moment before addressing her last question first, "From a customer's perspective, I found it quite enticing and enjoyable." He didn't say what he thought about it from another perspective, as he figured she would be content with that answer. Sighing lightly, he looked over at her and said, "Well, four of them didn't do it, but of the other two, I'm assuming one still hasn't come back, and the other... well I'm not about to go searching through all the clubs in the city am I? So, four out of six isn't bad, why don't you help me out a little?" There were too many variables in the equation, two people out of the hundreds that came to this club, and the thousands that went to all the clubs in the city, it would be like finding a needle in a haystack, made of needles. He didn't expect Ember to give him something for nothing; he remembered her saying she'd help for a price, what that price was, Cyril had no idea. He wasn't a mind reader, and as much as he would have liked to see inside the redhead's mind, it just wasn't possible.

Ember had in fact completely forgotten about the charge, but smiled as she heard him ask for help. Of course he had pointed out the fact that he had not been weak right off the bat as would a man who wanted to protect their pride, but it was still humbling to see. These weird notions men have developed of pride and arrogance over the years have been rather annoying to deal with throught he years. "yes, four is good and all, but i don't think looking for the source still-" her sentence was cut off as something at the front door caught her attention. She smiled and glanced back to Callahan before standing again without finishing her sentence, "i assure you sir, a larger investment would have the most rewarding benefits" she had changed the topic and grabbed a piece of paper,
"follow me back after a few minutes, one of your suspects has made his appearance"
"my name and number just in case you decide to change your mind" she winked and gave him a flirtatious sway of her hips before returning to the gentleman's common where the sharply dressed slightly obese man seemed to make a bee line for her direction.
"Ember, what a wonderful surprise" the heavy set man had been the last person on her list, and the true murderer.
"Surprise Erikson? i don't think you would have found me anywhere else to be hones" she chuckled and ignored the slight discomfort coming off the girls about the room. they were hiding their glances, but anyone who knew this place well enough would probably be able to tell that they were wary. "come, sir shall we have a drink?"
"Certainly dear, but i was hoping to do so somewhere a bit more... private" Ember swallowed the bile that had welled in her throat for some reason, biting back the scowl that threatened to break through her fake smile,
"of course, anything you would require, this way" leading him back to the private booths she settled and asked one of the waiters to fetch the guest his usual drink along with some others he might try, regrettably she knew this would probably be a long night, hopefully she would receive a fair amount of pay from this man, he treated his whores like animals, but paid well usually, it was hardly any money out of his pocket to do something like this, and his as was well wiped.

Cyril was confused for a moment before Ember approached another man. "Bingo. We have a winner." Cyril had seen the heavy man who spoke with Ember, in the papers recently, some mogul of some sort. Cyril folded up the piece of paper and put it in his coat pocket after reading it. He signaled Harry over and got another glass of water. He picked it up and headed over to the booth adjacent Ember and her client. He stayed silent, and pretended to watch the girl on stage as he listened to their conversation. He hoped that there'd be some useful information coming from the pair, but he was fairly certain the man wouldn't let anything slip, at least not under normal circumstances. Sighing, he sipped his drink lightly as a waiter came over to him. He was hungry, and he figured he'd be here for a bit, so he ordered a small Italian appetizer and left it at that.
