There have been some stories told to little children; stories of wolves hunting human in the forest at night. These stories were said to have been made up just so children would be home before dark and so they would get to bed on time. Little did they know, the stories were actually true.
From the beginning of time, the wolves have roamed the earth. Hiding from humans and only taking what they needed to survive. Eventually, the wolves grew human forms to blend in. No one ever knew nor would they ever know.
It was tradition to keep their pack a secret. The pack was to stay together at all times, never really conversing with humans unless dealing with business or otherwise. Once every full moon, the pack will bring a human to hunt who has either witnessed them or threatens the pack.
In small town outside of Pennsylvania, a wolf pack resides where they keep the wolf tradition. However, one girl is tired of their wolf traditions. Living with her aunt and cousin, Melody is forced otherwise. Her original plan was to someday escape but she has yet to do so.
One day, upon going for a run, she finds her cousin and his friends eating chickens off of a local farm in the middle of daylight. The farmer sees the wolves and begins to shoot them. Melody gets her cousin and his friends out of there but, in the process, she is shot and wounded. Melody wearily runs away, close to the river and changes back into her human form to rest. Little did she know, the farmer's son was right there watching her every change.

The early morning sun was beating down on me as I ran through the forest. The faster my heart raced, the more I wanted to change into my other form. Part of me wanted to give into the temptation but another part of me decided not to. In this early morning, with my luck, a human would catch me changing. Word would get around to Lothos and then that would be the end of it.
Lothos, the pack leader, loved it when his pack caught humans who knew our secret. Every night of a full moon, our pack would take a human who knew our secret and hunt them. All they had to do was reach the river 20 miles from the starting line. A distance a human never made. I could never do it. Sure, I would run but I would never really hunt. It was barbaric and sick. If it wasn’t for the wolf blood inside of me, I would have left my pack a long time ago. But my pack was my family.
After a good long hour run, I walked into the house. My heart beating fast and my body on the verge of changing. Quickly, I headed to the kitchen to grab a bottle of ice cold water to calm me down. The house was filled with the aroma of meat and it was making my stomach growl. My Aunt Patricia stood at the stove as she added some seasoning to some sausages. My mouth was watering. “Don’t just stand in the doorway,” my aunt said before turning around, “come in and get some.” I smiled at her motherly tone and grabbed a bottle of water from the refrigerator before taking a swig.
“By the way,” my aunt began as I sat at the table, “you got a letter today.” My head shot up as I saw a white envelope being waved in the air. I jumped up to retrieve the letter but another hand grabbed it instead. I glared at the Spawn of Satan who stood in front of me holding onto my letter as if for ransom.
Zeke was the son of Lothos so, traditionally, he’s the next leader of the pack. The only problem was I was designated to be his mate. To humans, it was a weird thought if relatives were considered mates. In our pack, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Zeke had never really been fond of the idea of us mating together just as much as I had but he was the son of the leader. Therefore, he didn’t really show any signs of rebellion.
The letter was staring back at me as it was waved back and forth in Zeke’s hands. A small growl was beginning to start in my throat. If I had given into my wolf form, I would have torn him to pieces; son of the pack or not. “Give. Me. The letter.” I tried to say calmly. Zeke just smiled and pretended as if to think about it.
“Zeke,” his mother said in a warning tone. Zeke stared at the woman behind me before rolling his eyes and handing me the letter. Almost a full grown wolf and he still listened to his mother. For this, I was grateful.
The letter from my little brother felt safe in my hands. It had been almost a year since I had last seen him. My father had taken my brother to live with another pack after our mother died. I was forced to stay with Lothos since it had already been set that I would become Zeke’s mate. All I needed was one good reason to leave the pack and I was gone. Everything that bothered me didn’t seem like a good enough reason, even if I did hate everything about the pack.
I sat at the table with fresh breakfast sitting in front of me as I began to read the letter. Zeke was talking nonstop on his phone to his friends. No doubt he was planning something stupid the way he always did. Aunt Patricia tried to make small talk with me as I read my letter. My brother Micah had made friends since moving into another pack but made enemies all the same. I didn’t like the idea of him fighting but as I continued to read he talked about making friends with a girl in his pack. In the end, he was happy with our father as well as being in a new pack. I was happy but missed him all the same.
It wasn't long before Zeke finished his food, still on the phone, and left the table without another word. Some future mate indeed. I finished my own breakfast and excused myself from the table before getting ready for work. By the time I was done, Aunt Patricia had gone to work but Zeke was outside talking with some of his friends. I couldn't help but want take a listen.
"Look, all I'm saying is we go to the old farmer's house and snatch a chicken or two before heading to work." Zeke said as a matter of factly. Since he would become future pack leader, his friends didn't really have anything to say against it.
It seemed he wouldn't be the only one ditching work today. I grabbed my sweatshirt hoody and followed. His scent was easy to follow. By the time, I found the boys they had already changed into their wolf forms. Just as they had, I gave into my other form. My white wolf fur stood out from the rest of the pack. I was the only white wolf. My mother had explained that white wolf's were rare in our pack. Maybe that was why Lothos had wanted me to mate with Zeke. White wolves symbolized power to us. I saw it as my fur being a curse. White didn't blend in very well with dirt.
I ran onto the farmer's land and started biting and attacking Zeke before he could grab another chicken or even a sheep. Like any other wolf he attacked back. Being a certain kind of wolves, our wounds would heal quickly but there was one thing none of us were really expecting.
A gun shot fired in the shy as the farmer stood before us. Zeke's friends all ran. Zeke, however, tried to take another chicken but the farmer fired again almost missing Zeke. Another wolves bite marks healed quickly but a gun shot would be like any other wound. Finally, Zeke turned right around and started to run home. I followed as did the farmer.
Shot after shot could be heard throughout the forest. Instead of heading home, I headed to the river. My side ached and I couldn't run on all fours anymore. As I lied down by the river, I changed back into my human form. It was harder than I thought with a bullet wound. If you had ever been shot, you know the pain but this was much worse as I changed back.
I could hardly move and I didn't have my cell phone to call for help. I felt pathetic and weak. Two things a wolf should never feel. But in that moment, I just tried to lie still. Then again, having my life end wouldn't have been half has bad. That way I wouldn't have to mate with Zeke and I wouldn't have to be part of being the pack leader. Sure, I didn't want to leave Micah but he was a strong wolf pup. Death was only natural to a wolf.

I woke up this morning to the smell of bacon, hash-browns, and eggs being made. I leapt out of bed and hit my brothers each with pillows. "Hey c'mon you sleepy heads. Ma's got breakfast ready" I shouted at them and they leapt up, each hitting me with pillows. I laughed and ran at them, tackling them all, and sending us all to the floor, where we continued to beat each other with pillows. We heard Ma's voice calling us. We all stopped and pushed each other down as we stood.
I grabbed my flannel shirt, as did my brothers, and barely had time to finish buttoning it before i jumped out of the loft and down to the floor. I heard three other thumps just behind me as we all leapt from the loft. We ran into the kitchen and smiled at our mother.
I kissed her cheek, and so did Rand, my young brother, Matt, my younger brother, and Tam, my youngest brother. He all were taller than Ma. Each of us was very ripped from working on the farm all our lives. I was the biggest and most ripped, but I never bragged, for my brothers each had sweethearts... I did not. It didn't bother me too much anyway. We all sad down at the table in our pj bottoms and our flannel shirts.
My mother spoke to us, "Well... look who finally decided to get up this morning." The truth was it was only six thirty, but that was half an hour too late. "Be lucky I took into acount how late you boys were out last night."
We all had been out until midnight hunting deer. I was the oldest and 20, Rand was 19, Matt was 18, and Tam was 17. We all were very strong, but I was always the biggest. I looked around at all of our different facial hair styles. I was the only one to have a full beard. Rand had a mustache, Matt had mutton chops, and Tam had a chin beard. My hair was a little shaggy, and it curled slightly, as was Matt's, but Rand's hair was short and straight, and Tam's hair was very long, straight, and in a ponytail.
Our father walked in the door and sighed heavily He was almost as big as us and had a long, greying beard. "You boys are late to rise I see." He laughed heartily. I always loved Pa's laugh. He came behind each one of us and kissed our cheek and ruffled our hair.
"We are starved nearly Ma." Rand said in a "matter of fact" tone
"Yeah, we only shot two deer last night." Matt said with a smile
"They had a fair amount of meat on them but, we were still hungry" Tam said with a wink.
"Lets just be thankful that our Ma loves us enough to keep feeding us," I said. They all laughed. Ma then heaped each of our plates with six eggs, ten strips of bacon, and a mound of hashbrowns... each...
We all bowed our heads and prayed. Rand went first
"Dear lord... I pray you let us have a safe day out in the fields today... And I pray you keep Nynaeve safe and happy," Nynaeve was his sweetheart
Matt followed, "I pray you keep Egwene safe too," Matt's girl was Egwene
Tam followed, "And Min lord," Min was his sweety
I finished, "And I pray you bring me someone wonderful, that likes my size, and who loves..." I grab Rand and Matt's heads in a headlock under each arm, since they were sitting next to me."...My family..." Then we all said in unison "Amen" I released them and they rubbed their heads. I didn't hurt them, they just did It for show.
We ate the food quickly, but with good manners. We each drank a large pitcher of milk afterwards. We all took our plates and gently, and neatly, set them in the sink for Ma to clean. They were almost spotless anyhow, but she still liked to wash things. We each kissed her on the cheek as we walked past to deposit our dishes.
Pa stood up and did the same as us. Then he spoke to us, "Now you boys go get ready for work out in the fields. We need to keep watch for more of those wolves stealing our animals again"
"Yes sir," my brothers and I said in unsion. We then climbed back up into the loft. There was no ladder, but just four ropes that were secured up there. A staircase was in the back, but we never used it unless we broke our legs or arms.
We all got ready. Dressed in Jeans, tight grey tanktops,(tight because of our sizes), and loose flannel shirts. We each had a neck kerchief around our necks. I just finished securing my large skinning knife to my belt when I heard a gunshot....
I was first on the floor, my brothers right behind me. I ran around the house and into the woods a few hundred yards off as more gunshots rang. My brothers went directly to see the problem. I saw several wolves run into the forest past me.
There was a white wolf with them... I ran out a little ways into the forest and followed her. I signaled to Pa that I would get it. He nodded and ushered the rest inside and instructed them to keep extra watch.
I ran out and kept this wolf in sight. I felt the knife at my side, that would be more than enough. I watched it change shape... "What the hell", I thought to myself... Standing before me was... a girl... of about my age too. And she had been shot. I stood on the other side of the stream from her in plain site. I watched her carefully. I slowly took out my belt knife... and stuck it deep into the fallen tree at my feet.
I took off my flannel shirt, held it in my hands, and waded across the stream slowly. I stopped halfway across, and halfway to her. I smiled gently. She was beautiful. Petite, cute, and fascinating. "What... what are you?" I ask gently
I looked her over, there was no doubt about it, I couldn't hurt this creature if my life depended on it. My heart softened and my eyes did too.

I tried to get up but my side hurt too much and I was already losing a lot of blood. I held onto my side to apply pressure to the bleeding but I knew that wouldn’t do me any good. My body was becoming weak. If I didn’t find help or if I wasn’t discovered, I surely would bleed to death. That’s when I heard him. On the other side of the river stood a man with a knife. Surely, he was here to finish off the white wolf only to see the wolf change into me.
This wasn’t good for either one of us. If Lothos found out, this man would be hunted by the pack and I would get scolded for being reckless. Of course, Zeke wouldn’t get a single beating about his stupidity. The man threw down the knife and took off his shirt before crossing the river to me. I didn’t know what to do. I was scared, nervous and in a lot of pain. I didn’t know if I could run or even how far if I could stand. Knife or not he could still strangle me with his bare hands.
When asked what I was, I didn’t really know how to answer. Clearly, he had seen me change and, of course, he had questions. If only he didn’t ask when I was bleeding to death from the wound his father, I assumed, gave me. Then again, his father didn’t know. Not to mention, we were on his land. In the end, it all came down to Zeke. If I ever lived through this, I was going to murder him with my own bare hands and I would enjoy seeing the light escape from his eyes.
My mind went back to the man standing in front of me still in the river. Slowly, he inched towards me not really sure what I was going to do. I couldn’t run. I barely even had enough energy to fight let alone stand. “I’m part of a race called Loups-garoux. In lamens terms, I’m a werewolf.” It was getting harder to stay awake with each passing second. “Look, I’m sorry about the chickens. I can explain everything later but I really need to get this wound taken care of. A phone would suffice. That way no one would ever know you saw me change.” I couldn’t go to a hospital. Our kind never did well in hospitals. “Not that I expect any favors after today.”

I listened to her words and tilted my head in curiosity. I shook it off. Now was not the time for questions. I was so nervous, but my instincts kicked in. I gently lifted her and sat down. A placed her on top of me, spooning her and gently applied pressure to the wound. I thought nothing of it at the time. Any other time I would be blushing like a wool headed yearling. I kept the cold shirt on her wound.
She was cold, very cold, and pale now. My body was warm and pressed to hers with the weight of her, if you could call it weight, was on me. I didn't mind. She was a feather.
Then I realized something. "My parent's didn't see you change.... My ma is the only doctor my brothers and I ever needed, and we've been shot with arrows and stabbed with knives before." I stood, gently cradling her in my arms. "I'm bringing you back to the farm. I'll tell my father that you were hit by one of the shots that missed the wolves. He'll believe me. I've never lied to Pa before... But he doesn't have any reason to not trust me."
I slowly started to make my way across the river again, making sure to keep her out of the water. Once on the other side I bent over a little and picked up my knife. I held her in my left arm while I did so. She could probably sit in my hand and I would still hold her up. Then I started running towards the farm. I made sure to hold her snugly so she wouldn't bounce, but not tight enough to hurt.
"You'll like the ranch, much better than any old stuffy hospital." I chuckled then ran on.

Again, I felt nervous as he moved closer even more when he picked me up. The feeling of being weak came back to me. The longer I was going without treatment, the harder it was to stay awake. I was carried across the river and back to his house. In the distance, I thought I heard a wolf howl but that was impossible. No wolf was to howl in the day time.
The man carrying me ran back to his house where he explained the “story.” It wasn’t long before I was taken to another room. The man who had carried me followed his mother, I assumed, into a room where I was placed on a bed. The bed felt like a cloud. The woman explained something about the cloth she presented but it was hard to concentrate. I felt so tired that it didn't take much from the cloth to put me to sleep. That’s when the dream started.
I dreamt I was in another part of the country away from the pack but I wasn’t alone. The human who knew my secret was working in the yard. I, on the other hand, was standing a little ways from the house and just watching the view. There I didn’t have to worry about a pack or having to worry about the next hunt on the full moon. I was happy. Suddenly, the clouds in the sky grew dark. The plants in the fields grew dead and Lothos stood before me. “You can’t escape our pack,” he told me.
I woke up with a start. My heart was racing and I was covered in sweat. I looked around the room and realized I wasn’t in my own house. That’s when the memories came back. I had been shot because my stupid cousin decided to have a little fun hunt. I was still in the farmer’s house. The sun outside was lower than when I was brought to the house which meant I had been under for some time.
I felt where I had been shot and felt a bandage in its place. The bandage continued to wrap around my entire stomach.
I wanted to go home and leave these humans. It was for their own safety. If Lothos found out, the pack would be hunting more than one person. I tried to get up but a shocking pain shot through my body. There was no way I was leaving tonight. I lied my head back down on the pillow and just stared up at the ceiling. Again, the thought of wanting to kill Zeke crossed my mind.

I ran as fast as I could, and still keep her from bouncing too much. I ran in and shouted to my Ma to come help. She ushered me into the master bedroom with the girl in my arms. I laid her down on the bed after my mother laid down a table cloth to keep the blood from staining the sheets.
I watched my Ma while she got out the colorform and put the girl under. She was weak... I sat down on a stool in the corner. I wouldn't move from that spot until this girl regained consciousness.
Thoughts running through my head... How many other werewolves were out there... Were they hostile... I would find out. One thing was for sure, I would not be letting this girl go. I felt... responsible for her.
I don't know how long it had been, but suddenly she sat up in bed with a jolt. I stood quickly, but without a sound. She didn't seem to notice me at all. Then she laid back down. I walked over to her and stood next to the bed. I decided to kneel so she wouldn't feel threatened. I took audible steps towards her. Not loud, but not silent.
"How are you doing... considering..." I shrugged and smiled weakly. "I'm sorry you were hurt. My pa feels real bad about it all." I nod my head for emphasis. Why was my heart racing like it was... It never happened when I talked to girls before... "You are welcome to stay as long as you like... but you are staying as long as you need. My Ma will see to that. Once my Ma has her mind set on something... there are few things in this world, be it brains... Muscle.." I flex, popping my bulky muscles. Then I relax... "Or beauty, that can change her mind." At the word beauty, I winked at the girl...
Suddenly it dawned on me. I blush deeply and my eyes widen. Then my eyes relax and I turn to the girl. "I am so sorry. I really am. Pardon me for not introducing myself." I stand and bow as I say my name... "My name is Perrin Bashier Al'thor... People just call me Perrin though." I kneel back down and smile.

The man from earlier started me. I didn’t really expect anyone to be in the room by my side. I hardly knew the guy. Sure, his dad shot me but it wasn’t his fault. To him, I had just been a wolf. With some difficulty, I sat myself up so I could really talk to him. Now that I was more alert, I was able to get a good look at him. He was bigger than I had thought but there was something about him that seemed gentle.
“I’m fine, considering.” I shrugged. I had been shot at but never had I actually been shot. So, naturally, I assumed I was doing fine. When the man mentioned his father, I thought of Zeke again. His father wasn’t the one to blame. One my good for nothing cousin. I chuckled when he showed me his muscles as if trying to flirt. This guy was unbelievable. If he hadn’t been so nice, I would have assumed him to be egotistical.
“Please,” I informed him, “you’re father didn’t know. We shouldn’t have been on your land anyway. I was merely trying to get my pack away from the farm.” Perrin. So that was his name. “I’m Melody Jacobs. People call me Melody or Mel, whichever they prefer.” I thought about what he had said when I was to stay as long as I needed. With my Lycan blood, I was sure to be healed in no time now that the bullet was gone. However, the speed of my healing would be unusual to any human. That’s when I thought of Lothos and the pack. “Perrin, I can’t stay here. It’s risky. The longer I stay here, the bigger risk it’s going to be for your family.”

I rested my chin on my knuckles as she spoke. My face became increasingly, and increasingly sadder as she spoke. She was going to leave. Not on my watch. This was the first girl that I really like.
"Don't worry about My family and I. We held off a group of convicts that had escaped jail a few years ago. My brothers and Father and I will be fine... I... I don't want to let you go Melody... I don't know what it is but... I..." I let my head hand in my embarrassment. I claw at my head, running my fingers into my hair in frustration. Why couldn't I get my words out.
I lifted my head, my cheeks still red. I close my eyes and just speak. "I... I don't want to let you go... I feel... I don't know... I feel... I think I..... I think you're beautiful..." I opened my eyes. I felt my face getting hotter. I had said it. Why was it so hard to speak. I've spoken to girls before. What's going on with me. I realized what I had just said and I felt to embarrassed.
"I'm sorry." I stand and walk to the door. I look back at her over my shoulder. I reach for the door handle.
