Now before you all flame me, please note I'm just looking to see the numbers. I don't really care about the reasons, however should you wish to post, by all means do so.

However don't forget to vote in the poll as it's the main reason I made this.

Without further adieu, there were lots of hoorah back in '97 when HK went back to China... and even now so.

However Taiwan represents a different situation completely. Speaking from an international viewpoint, they're a seperate country now, not just a colony. They also have a dialect all their own and even embody a unique culture. They even have their own military force... and boasted a strong economical force all their own (akin to HK).

But the crux of the matter is should all that even matter? Does all that even matter?

NOTICE: Please vote and please refrain from ad nauseam propaganda posts -- I know you may feel entitled to voice an opinion but please accept that there are always both sides to each argument and please address each other's points and likewise, counter-points.

Enjoy!

i think Taiwanese people see themselves from being apart from China, and although we are all "Chinese", there is a difference in nationalism. Basically, Taiwanese have their own culture that is distinct and different than the mainland China's culture.

I do believe they should be regarded as a seperate nation...

And as for those of you who don't agree... don't flame me sweatdrop cuz... it's my opinion wink

Taiwan is a different country even though they speak Chinese and are all related to someone who lived in mainland China.

Nice topic. I do not agree that Taiwan is a separate nation!

We hongkongers too do have our own culture and speech etc that is even more distinct and different than that of mainland china's or taiwan's. At least taiwanese speaks some kind of mandarin as well, but we hongkongers speak cantonese which is totally different. Taiwan was a portugese (Sp?) colony and hongkong was a british colony. Both are having a captalist economy while mainland china is having socialism. But Hong Kong (and Macau as well) is working perfectly fine under the One Country Two Systems principle! Because we are so unique, thats why we're called a Special Admisnistrative Region. Taiwan could follow our example. They can still retain their own way of life, etc. It is quite hurt to see we Chinese are all separated into different "countries" while we're all of the same origin and race. We may classify ourselves as "mainlanders", "hongkongers" or "taiwanese", but we are still Chinese afterall. Why cant we just unite together and use our efforts instead towards foreigners but not to start a long arguement among ourselves? I believe Chinese people are smart and hardworking (and we know how to make money! thats why we are discriminated against in some countries some time ago, if not now). If only we are willing to forget old hostility and cooperate with each other, we will beat the Americans in no time!! (sorrie this has nothing to do with Americans actually. its just used as an example coz USA is like the strongest country?)

This too is just my own opinions though. It's not a flame.

It's true after all.
Chinese is chinese, there's nothing bout country separation.
it's also depends on the government there whether wanna follow the same culture and the tradisonal way or not. Cos it would be a lost for them to treat themselves as foreigner...

Well I'll have to argue against your comment about country seperation. Speaking strictly from a sociological view point, it does matter... in fact, quite alot.

A parallel can be drawn with American English vs British English. And likewise, Austrialia and Canada as well. Also similar would be a smaller comparison drawn between France and the Canadian province of Quebec.

Each embody a strongly different cultures, values and beliefs. However, it's a shared sense of loyalty to ones own that seems to be in common.

For example, no one abroad in Europe or the Middle East would admit to being an American. But if you say you're from Canada eh, stares turn into smiles. Likewise with China, Taiwan and HK. The animosity exists for a reason being it government or sociological, so that's why I feel that there's actually much much more than nothing about country separation.
