Genna Hanson, known to everyone in the world of magical creatures as Eli Corver - the famous elven princess - was moving her boxes into a small apartment she had just rented. She may have been famous in the world of magical creatures, but in her world, nothing was going right. She was out casted by her own family and forced to live on her own because they were barely associating with her anymore. It wasn't like they flat out told her to leave or anything, but she could tell they felt uncomfortable and maybe a bit intimidated by her quirks.

She had finally gotten everything out of her car her parents has bought for her. It was really cheap and she was paying for insurance and everything, but since her parents had been acting weird every since she got older and her ears got a little... pointy... it was really all she could ask for. She was actually really upset about the whole situation, how she had to move to this stupid apartment and now she couldn't even go to college, all because weird things kept happening around her and her stupid ears and the fact that she was just different. Didn't most parents accept their kids flaws?! Sighing heavily as she lugged the last box up the stairs to her new apartment, she unlocked the door and slid the box in, looking around at the unpacked boxes that lay strewn around the small apartment. Shutting the door a bit angrily behind her and locking it, she leaned up against the door and than slid down against it, sitting on the floor and letting a few tears escape her. This wasn't what she wanted at all. She didn't want these stupid pointed ears or the quirks that made her family hate her. She wanted to be normal and she wanted to be home.

------------------------------

The head guardian assigned to Eli, Wren Soless, an elf who couldn't even remember his own age, but it was probably somewhere around 400 by this point. He only appeared to be about mid-30's though and as a high elf, he had a taller stature than most other elves, standing about 6'1" tall, with a thin but muscled frame. He had the appearance of someone very wise and experienced, which was quite the truth. Currently he was standing outside of the new apartment Eli had rented, worrying just a bit. She was going to be so much more vulnerable living on her own than around a family. Why did those ridiculously ignorant humans have to drive her away? He sighed lightly and watched as she dragged the last box into her apartment and shut the door behind her. There were several other elves stationed around the building, all well hid through magic of their own. He only wished that she knew how important she was and what danger she was in. She seemed completely ignorant to the fact that she was an elf... well, maybe not ignorant, but like she just didn't want to accept it. He was waiting for a phone call from a private detective/wizard, Harry Dresden. Wren really needed this help, as a certain vampire was providing quite an issue with Eli's protection.

Harry Dresden, the only operating wizard in the beautiful spring city of Chicago, pushed open the door to his messy office where books were stacked in a corner and holding at least a millimeter of dust on them. Their spines were broken and pages yellowed. On his desk there were many papers strewn about, a few personal notebooks, and late notices on his small office he was renting. He had more than payed it off permanently, but with the new needed additions to the office--from the giant brown scorpion that nearly killed him and trashed his office--he had to pay for it again for changing it in the first place. Everything else was plain and boring, even the old phone sitting on the wall. He looked over at it though to see someone had left a message.

He ran his fingers through his chocolate locks then rubbed his rough jawline from his five o'clock shadow while wondering to check it or not. He wasn't completely sure if Murphy was exactly happy for him not calling in sick and just vanishing instead. He pulled off his coat and dropped it on his desk before reaching over his desk to his recorded messages to play them back. The old tape recorder hissed as the plastic spun on it before speaking in one of the most pure and clean sounds he had heard from a machine in a while. He figured his magic was running on the low from being sick with a fever for two weeks.

The attention span he had wasn't on the messages until he heard an elven accented man speak into his phone. He looked over at his tape recorder as if he could see the man who was speaking. The urgency in his voice for him to call back made him wonder what kind of trouble he would gent into if he took up that case. He wrote down the number that was left from the elf anyways and then redialed the number not even caring about the rest of the messages.

"Hello? This is Harry Dresden, I'm returning your call about your case for further details."

However, sitting around and pouting probably wasn't going to help her much right now, so she hastily wiped the tears away from her face and stood up, sniffling a bit. She was just an 18 year old girl with oddly pointy ears who had just graduated high school and was not ready for this summer. She was going to have to work constantly to be able to pay for this rent and hopefully take a few classes at the community college near her apartment. Not to mention gas costs and insurance... and food.. water bills.. Dammit. she muttered, rubbing at her eyes again. She was screwed. How the hell was she supposed to pull this off?! Trying to get her mind off the issues that lay before her and the problems of the past, she started unpacking her boxes, putting clothes away in the drawers and trying to make this little apartment feel at least a bit like a home.

------------------------------

When Wren's phone rang in his pocket, he looked down at the number, recognizing it as Harry's number. Dispelling the magic that was keeping him invisible to everyone else, he walked over to a bench by the apartment building, still keeping his eyes glued on Eli's door and flipped open the phone, saying Hello Harry, thank you for getting back to me so quickly. smoothly, pausing for a moment before saying next I have a proposal for you. I don't know if you're aware of what the elves have been trying to protect for several years now, or more so who. There's a girl, royalty, Eli Corver, who is being hunted by many, but one man in particular. We're not sure of his name, but he's a vamp and a bit out of our - the elves that have been protecting her - league. He's good at tricking us and although he hasn't quite gotten around our protective services yet, we need some back-up to keep this girl safe. And that, that's where you come in. Wren paused there, letting the man take in what he had said so far. He was sure he'd at least have some questions, if not a lot, and wanted to give him a chance to respond before unloading more on him.

Harry sat on the other end of the line jotting down notes in his leather bound book making sure not to skip any important details. He leaned back in his chair wondering why the elves wanted his help now. To his knowledge, the elves normally weren't very fond of wizards as they forced the magic that they used. Abused it. No longer was it apart of nature to most, it was a weapon. Harry always thought of it as a tool and a gift, but that didn't matter at this point. An elf wanted his help now, and he needed to give it to him the best he could. If he was a paying customer, he needed to.

"
Why do the elves want a wizard's help? Particularly mine. Commonly these issues are brought up to the White Council, but I will help you either way. And your princess, why is she among mortals?" he added rubbing his temple. Maybe he should have taken the day or two off to just sleep without a headache or fever instead coming in the second it went away.

Still unpacking.

------------------------------

Wren waited for the wizard to ask questions before he spoke again. First, because of the vampire, he's a lot for us to handle. Secondly, as far as the White Council goes, we've contacted them, but honestly, they haven't been able to aid us very well. They said our princess wasn't enough of a security issue for them to issue as much help as we need. And to answer your final question, our princess has been in the hands of mortals before she was even one year old. Her parents were killed by the same vampire that is after her now and she was put into mortals hands for her own protection. She goes by the mortal name of Genna Hanson, and, to make things more complicated, has no idea of her true identity. he said, trying to clear things up for Dresden. The situation was actually rather complicated for those who weren't accustomed to it. They were pretty much protecting an elven princess who thought she was just some mortal, neglected girl with a family who didn't care about her.

Harry continued to write down these notes as fast as he could to keep up with the elf. "Is it possible for you to come down to my office and give me anything that you can to help out? It is a pretty vague thing you are asking me to do. I don't even know what she looks like or the vampire. If you know who he is, that would be greatly helped. Knowing if he's a magic user or just a vampire would be very helpful too," he said before yawning off to the side and listening again. He didn't know where this girl was staying either. This was going to be a very difficult case if more information wasn't brought to his attention.

Still unpacking.

Wren thought about Harry's suggestion to come down to his office, his eyes still glued on Eli's front door. He didn't feel comfortable whenever he left her, even though she had no idea he was there and everything. But he always felt better when he was the one watching. After a moment of thought, he said "Can you meet with me today? I can bring you a picture of the girl, but as you must be aware, vampires cannot be caught on camera, so the best I can bring you is a description. We know he's a magic user as well, but I can collect some more information and bring it down to your office. The sooner you can meet, the better. I don't like her to be out of my sight for very long." Wren paused and waited for what Harry would said in response, hoping the wizard could meet with him as soon as possible. Today would definitely be best since things seemed to be rather peaceful and he could get other elves to take his place here rather quickly.

Harry mentally slapped himself in the face for the comment about how vampires couldn't be photographed. He knew that. He was very much aware of that. Not it was completely clear to himself that the fever still had a bit of a grip on him. He frowned at his condition since he couldn't remember anything ever having a hold of him like this did. He let the silence take over their conversation for a little bit until he heard a meow, a very loud meow. Mister. He smirked and leaned back in his chair. "I'll come meet you in my apartment, it should be somewhere around where you are standing, at least in one of the sections of it. I'll be there in about ten to twenty minutes. I'll contact you when I get there," he finished. Once they said their good byes, he left the office once more pulling out his keys and on his coat.

He walked to his bug and hoped it would make it there when he started up the multi-plated car. It took a while to get there and he parked it with the thing struggling to get in there. He stepped out extending his tall body up to its full height of about six foot, but he was much more built than the elf. He walked across the parking lot clicking his tongue and he saw a large cat bounding up to him and then rubbing on his legs hard enough to knock him over. "
Hi, Mister." He kept walking forward though to see the elf who he assumed had been calling him. He didn't say anything until he got much closer to where he could see the very color of the much older man's eyes. "Harry Dresden," he said holding out his hand to him.

Belle had finished putting away all her clothes and a few other things when she stumbled upon a picture of her with her family. Sighing heavily, she put it on top of the dresser, but than knocked it down so the picture was facing down towards the top of the dresser so she couldn't see it. Sniffling again, she felt the tears coming and jumped in her bed she had thankfully already made, curling up under the blankets and sniffling a bit more. Stop being such a wimp. she thought to herself, burying her face in her pillow.

Wren waited patiently when the wizard took a bit to reply, smiling lightly when he said he would come meet him. That made his job much easier. Thank you, I'll see you soon than Mr. Dresden. he said into the phone before hearing the click on the other hand and hanging up himself. He stayed seated where he was on the bench, a clear view of Eli's apartment clearly in his sights. He wondered how she was hanging in there. He knew simply from watching that the changes, the elf ears, the strange occurrences - like her fast healing wounds and some slip ups by some of her protectors - had deeply affected her. She'd lost everyone that she thought were her real family, and how was an 18 year old girl who had no idea of what she really was or of her importance supposed to understand that?

Sighing gently, he patiently waited for Dresden to arrive, occasionally letting his eyes trail away from her apartment door to check for the other elves. They were well hidden, but he knew where they were and how to see them, so it was reassuring to him to see everyone in their places and attentive. Hearing a car pull into the parking lot, he looked up in time to see a man about his height step out of the car, who he immediately identified as the investigator, Harry Dresden. He watched as the wizard approached, greeted midway by a large black cat. When he got closer, Wren stood to greet him, taking his hand and shaking it as he held it out. "Wren Soless, good to meet you Harry. Thank you for coming here to meet me, it makes things much easier for me to control." he said simply, smiling at the man.

Pulling a folder out of his rather large jacket pocket, he handed it to Harry, his eyes constantly darting from Eli's apartment door to Harry's eyes. "This has everything you need to know, including a picture of the girl, who goes by Genna around here, but is known to us as Eli. Her background's in there, as well as the description of the vampire that's after her.. literally everything you need to know." he said simply, keeping his eyes trained on Harry for a moment.

Harry nodded his head to the elf accepting his greeting and giving his own. He took the folder and opened it listening to the small briefing he was receiving. The picture he pulled out of the elven princess stunned him a little bit. How could she not realize what she was? She looked like the perfect image of an elf. Her moon-like skin, blue almond eyes, perfect pink lips, and sandy hair. "How does she not know when she looks like that?" Harry muttered to himself. He put away the picture and pulled out the piece of paper and read the name for the man who they knew that after her. He swallowed hard knowing this would be a man could easily kill him. There was no way he could accomplish this without his Templar friend, but he didn't know if his wife would allow him to go considering last time he was nearly killed.

"
I have to say that this will be expensive money wise, but considering that you are keeping an eye on the princess, I don't think that'll be an issue. As far as taking care of her threat, I don't think it'll be a quick fix. Are you familiar with Bionca? She and the Red Court will make a big mess if I can't single him out with some evidence. As far as Genna goes, personally, I live just a few apartments away. Is she to be aware that I am helping her, or just do my investigation on my own," he asked. He put the folder inside one of his many coat's pockets. He looked up to the apartment that Wren kept looking up into. He didn't see anything from there.

---------------------------------

Although it was only early into the evening, only about 7 PM, Genna fell asleep to her silent tears, curled up in her blankets. Thankfully she had already set up her alarm clock to wake her up the next morning for work, but for now, she drifted into a semi-peaceful sleep.

Wren's eyes flickered back to Eli's door when Harry started to speak again, grinning gently when he overheard Harry's comment about Eli not knowing what she was despite her appearance. "She's been raised a mortal and she doesn't want to believe she's anything other than mortal, despite the signs." he said gently, smiling wisely at the investigator. Eli really was fighting that fact that she was an elf with every fiber of strength she had, excusing the ears of some sort of defect and the fast healing wounds as just pure luck. Her excuses were weak, but they kept her holding on to a thread of hope that she wasn't some sort of "freak".

When Mr. Dresden mentioned the expense factor, Wren shrugged it off slightly, knowing it wouldn't be a problem at all. He listened carefully to the rest of what the detective said, despite the fact that he wasn't even attempting to make eye contact with the man anymore, his eyes watching Eli's front door. He always had this feeling that if he wasn't looking for just a bit too long, someone would get through - which was a bit ridiculous considering all the other elves stationed around the apartment complex - but he worried about this girl. She'd been through a lot so far and he was pretty sure at this point that it could only get worse before it got better.

Wren nodded when the wizard finished speaking, saying "Money will not be an issue at all. As far as Bionca is concerned, yes, I've spoken to her several times before, once about this particular situation. As you've mentioned as well, evidence is necessary. However, it's a bit impossible to get evidence against a vampire who hasn't managed to get to his target yet.' Pausing and sighing lightly, he continued by saying "And you are not to let her know what's going on, or that you're involved in any way. She has no idea of the danger she's in and for now, we've decided it's better to keep it that way. Until something drastic happens and we have to keep her directly in our care, we don't want to disturb her every day life." He smiled a bit, knowing it was almost silly to want to preserve her mortal life as it was, but he didn't feel they should make her whole world come crashing down on her quite yet.

Harry nodded at everything the elf said completely agreeing with him. "Well, these are my personal contact information as far as the location and number of my apartment and the address of my office. If you need to, use either to contact me," Harry instructed him. "In the mean time, I'm going to walk home for some lunch. I'll keep by my phone. Nice meeting you, Wren." After another good bye, he turned away from him to walk home. Mister raced after him to find food and eat. The wizard needed something to refuel himself from as well. He was already exhausted and with this new case, he was going to need to sleep as much as he could to survive.

He pushed open the door into the dark apartment. He lit some candles to be able to see and put a can of cat food down on the bed. He laid down his bed feeling a storm brewing in the far distance, but he didn't have time to worry about that. He had to figure out how to expose on of the most dangerous vampires and recover from his own ordeal. It was always like this. Always the odds were against him, and he always survived. He hoped again this would be the exact same case as ever. He would some how manage to come out on top. He fell into a heavy sleep for the rest of that day to exhausted to think more on the case than he had while he was with Wren.

Wren took the numbers Harry gave to him and folded the paper carefully, tucking it into the inner pocket of the jacket he was wearing. "Thank you Harry, we really appreciate the help." Wren said, watching Harry walk off with his cat, back to his apartment. It was rather convenient that the wizard lived so close to Eli.

Wren stood guard all night, but a warning signal from one of the other elves on guard had him standing in a few steps away from the elven princess's door in a moment. An elf came quickly to tell him they were under attack by a hell hound sent after Eli and everyone had abandoned their disguises in an attempt to get rid of it. A hell hound was something Wren had not seen in a very long time, and a bit of panic washed over him for a moment before he rushed forward, causing a random explosion that wouldn't harm anyone, but would get everyone in there apartments moving, and maybe get Eli to run somewhere safer.

Genna woke up before her alarm went off the next morning at about 3 AM to loud noises, bangs, and screams outside her door. Frightened, she hopped out of bed, still wearing the small jeans and t-shirt she had been the day before, and peeked her head out of her apartment to see the most terrifying looking creature with glowing red eyes coming her way, smashing in apartment doors as he came. As soon as the thing spotted her however, it seemed to give a devilish grin and pick up speed. Realizing by the creature's strength that her only opportunity was to run, she turned and bolted, not sure where she was going, but she needed to get somewhere. She found herself in the basement of the apartment building soon enough, her bright blue eyes scanning the walls in panic. She could hear whatever was after her coming up close, although it seemed to keep pausing and roaring in anger, as if something was distracting it.

The elves were putting up a good fight against the Hell Hound, even after it had seen Eli, and kept stalling it, although many were being injured in the process. Wren had been knocked out momentarily, but had recovered and was calling in more back-up now. This was going to be a mess to clean up later. And all the mortals exposed to this?! And Eli!

Sooner rather than later, she spotted a door down the hall and tried the handle, finding it to be locked. There seemed to be some light coming from underneath the door however and in a panic, she slammed her fist against the door, yelling out in a voice that cracked with fear "There's something out here, let me in, please. Please." Her voice broke through the chaos around her like a knife because of the graceful, smooth, natural elven quality of it and she banged on the door a bit more, her body shuddering as whatever that massive creature was seemed to be getting closer.

Harry slept heavily all day and only woke up once to refill his large mug with water to drink and go to the bathroom. By then, the storm had reached the house and the lightning was splitting across the sky threatening everyone beneath it. He simply smirked at it. He thought about the storm as a living human being. How it screamed at the earth below and felt so powerful. He wished partially he could be like that. At least if it could get him out of the slump he was in.

He fell back asleep for another hour before deciding to do some research on this guy. It was all from books he kept and was given by the White Council to help him with his research. After a while though, he heard something other than the storm and Mister's loud purring at his desk. It sounded like their was a rabid dog outside and he knew the partially wild cat could hear it too. The cat jumped off the desk and rubbed up against the door though instead of hissing and growling like he did with the toad demon, Kashak.

"
What now, Mister? I've got homework to do," Harry muttered very exhausted and wishing he just stayed in bed. When he was just a few steps away from the door though, he heard Genna's voice on the other side of the door. He quickened his pace and started to open up the door slowly wanting to know who was on the other side of the door. She hit him in her furry of pounding leaving him to fall backwards, but he still held his door shut. He recognized her physically and was about to ask what was wrong, until he saw Drip. The demonic dog that had been summoned to kill the elvish princess.

"
Get in now," Harry commanded grabbing the front of her shirt and yanking her into the house. He shut the door behind her and locked it. He put himself between Genna and the hellish dog not wanting to know what was going to happen now. He darted back to his room pulling her with him to grab his blasting rod and shield bracelet to help protect the two of them. "Nice to meet you and sorry we can't have a better introduction. You need to stay behind me at all times. If something happens to me, go into the basement, got it?" Harry asked not giving her a chance to argue with it.

The dog burst open the door before Harry ran out to greet it shouting at him, "
You are not welcome here! Begone from my home!" Dip shuttered at the command, but he still broke through the door with acid dripping from his fangs and that tell tale limp in his front leg. His eyes narrowed as he glared at the creature but avoided eye contact with the beast. He mentally begun to prepare himself for battle, but then he remembered Genna. He couldn't fight. He had to get her somewhere safe. Once she was, he could chance sending this creature back to hell. "We need to go, now!" he shouted and grabbed the elf again dragging her into his room where he locked the door. He pushed open the window and climbed out into the freezing rain. He was thankful he decided to crash in his clothes and not end up naked like he did last time fighting a demon. That would be embarrassing.
