User ImageThe Won Kow Restaurant is a cheap place to eat, yet that is not to say it is unrefined. Xun Xue Yu imported many of the decorations and furnishings from his homeland of China. The furniture is of rich, dark wood expertly carved, and upholstered in silk. There are even Ming vases and jade artwork. Yet this is noting compared to the basement which is a true opium den, a place where the rich can sit back and dream without fear of discovery. The restaurant is more than a front for one of his opium den's. Or the fact that for the right price the waitresses and other staff will do more than merely serve you food. Beyond all this it is also how Mr. Yu launders all his ill gotten gains, he knows that value of things, and that everything has a price. Not that it would matter as like other gangs, they keep certain palms well greased to ensure, that their business runs smoothly.

User ImageXun Xue Yu sat in his meeting room. He was waiting for a man from Germany to arrive with his shipment of Kar-98 rifles. They were meant to be a small contribution toward a Unified China. One of his younger lieutenants said what most in the room were probably thinking. "The German is late."

Xun Xue Yu's thoughts drifted from the room. The restaurant beneath his feet was bustling. It was dinner and a variety of people were beneath him, mingling, conversing, enjoying the food. Waiters and Waitresses were bustling back and forth from the kitchen with food, the cooks effortlessly making stray cats and dogs look and taste like duck and pork. Further down, below the bustle, coolies were off in the clouds, business men chasing dragons and waitresses providing more earthly pleasures to still more customers. His mind falls back into the room when the door opens and a man is lead inside.

Gerulf hated dealing with the Chinese directly. He had made one trip to Asia, and only got as far as India. The Indians were strange enough, but Chinese were downright alien. They do things that in public that in China is polite, but in the west would garner no small amount of gasping. As he was lead in the room one of the Chinese men speaks to him with only the slightest hint of an accent. "You may speak in German, Mr. Schreck. We have an interpreter."

Gerulf gives the old man at the table a good bow. "I apologize for how late I am, Mr. Xun. I got carried away getting acclimated to my new surroundings."

The old man says something and the interpreter repeats in decent Geman "Mr. Xun would like to extend his own apologies to you for his blunder regarding the PPD-40s. He is regrets his own ineptitude regarding the matter and extends his deepest apologies. Mr. Xun also appreciates your continued amicability even after his foolishness."

Gerulf awkwardly chuckles. This was one of the things he hated the most. The self-depreciation was a thing he never could understand and he found it wholly unnecessary. "It wasn't a problem. I have already made a little of my money back and I hope to do more business with you in the future. Now regarding your shipment..."

Xun Xue Yu did not like this German. He arrives in a wrinkled suit smelling of the sea and liquor and displays the two things he dislikes most in westerners, haste and a disregard for subtlety. Continuing to gaze at Mr. Schreck he speaks to one of his men who had been sitting nearby with a small ornate box. The man places the box in front of the German and opens it, revealing it's contents. "Five hundred dollars Mr. Schreck. One hundred for my Thompsons and four hundred for the shipment of Kar-98s. You may keep the box as a personal gift from me." Mr. Xun waits for the interpreter to stop parroting and listens.

User ImageGerulf knew better than to count the money there. He also knew better than to not turn down the box. The interpreter bows and says "Mr. Xun insists." Gerulf knew better not to turn down the box a second time. "Is there anything else that I might procure for Mr. Xun?"

Mr. Xun was surprised by the small courtesy shown by the German. He told the interpreter that there was nothing else and Mr. Schreck bowed and was escorted out of the room. After he had left the men in the room all relaxed slightly. The same lieutenant spoke again, "I don't like him. He is rude and drinks." One of the older men says to him "You are also rude and you also drink. Should we not like you?" Several of the other men laugh. Xun looks at the boy. "My son, we shall see the quality of what he has brought to us before we decide on that of his character."

Gerulf was lead downstairs by the man who had brought him up. Now more than ever he missed Germany. When they arrive in the restaurant the man asks for the shipping numbers on their crates. Gerulf gives them the numbers. "Zey are all bundled togezer for you near ze south corner of the warehouse." He hesitates. "If you do not vant zem, leave the refrigerators, if you please." He needs floor models anyways. The Chinese man gives him one of those grins the Chinese give you when you have said something they find rude or ridiculous. Gerulf walks out of Chinatown and heads back to the hotel.

The evening progressed uneventfully after the German left. He sat in on a meal down in the restaurant. He didn't eat. He said he was not hungry, but really he just didn't want cat. After that some trucks drove by and some of his men got out. He excused himself and went to speak with his men. His men were surprised by the fact that he was happy the German had dealings with Beiyang. This was good news. Either Beiyang was having money troubles or they had traitors. Either way, it was good news for the Kuomintong. Even if they had a surplus of weapons, he could still pass this information on.

Xun Xue Yu walks into the empty restaurant and sees his son sitting at the bar covered in blood, one of his doctors stitching a wound on his arm, and a shape covered in a bloodstained cloth on one of the long tables. The room is completely silent as he walks to the sheet. Lifting it he asks "Who has done this, my son? Who has killed my friend and scarred you?"

The young man looks over at his father. "It was the Wanqu Weixiao. They ambushed us on our walk here. I am sorry father. I could not protect him."

Yu looks around. "Prepare a funeral for Tsung. Inform his wife and daughter. The restaurant is closed today... And contact the German. We will be needing his services after all."

We are going to war, Yu thinks as he bows before the corpse of his friend, and all war is deception...

Xun Xue Yu sat in the restaurant, now a funeral parlor. An hour ago he had sent out a group of ten men armed with hatchets, pistols, and fire bombs. They left in different directions but the destination was the same. The Wanqu Weixiao had a small operation that changed Ta-yen into a substance called Laudanum. This was more popular among the Westerners and more expensive. Yu had turned a blind eye before, but now he had an excuse.

Two weeks have passed.

It had been two weeks since he had helped her pick out the cloth for those costumes. She was half way finished with the order, and wanted to thank Mr. Yu for his help. Her little notebook in hand she sought out the restaurant that Mr. Lo had said he owner. She told herself it would of been easier if she had Mr. Lo write it in Chinese then she could just hold up the paper and get directed that way. But after much wandering and retracing of steps she finally found herself at the doors to the restaurant. Shayla had baked a peach and apricot fruit cobbler as a thank-you, not knowing the man well she hoped he would like it as she pushed open the doors and walked inside. She looked around and thought the mural paintings were beautiful and stopped paying attention to the people as she simply took in the sight, she had never really wandered around China town. The day she met Mr. Yu had been her first excursion.

The voice snapped her back to reality as she looked at the waiter. "um. well no, not exactly. Is Mr. Yu in? I have a gift for him." She said with a slight smile. Shay was not sure if the man would bring her to Mr. Yu but she thought he would at leas tell her that someone was asking for him.

Two weeks ago the Wanqu Weixiao Triad attacked and killed members of Xun Xue Yu's Jiu Youfu Yun Triad and it quickly escalated into a full blown gang war. Chinatown has been rocked by business bombings, axe-murder assassinations, and shootouts between the two warring factions . The third triad in the area as well as the more corrupt Tongs have not involved themselves, more than likely deciding that the fight will work itself out. At the moment Yu was in the back of the restaurant eating something that was not freshly plucked out of the alley out back. His table was approached by a waiter.

"There is a woman here with a package for you, sir." The waiter explained with a deep bow.

As he walks to the front he recognizes the young woman from Mr. Lo's shop. "Ms. Shayla, correct? A pleasure to see you again. What is it that brings you to this meager establishment today?"

"I may not have the manners of a duchess but my Ma, did see to it that I showed thanks when it was due." She said as she stepped forward and held out the basket. "I do not know what you people prefer to eat, even less how to cook it but, here is a peach and apricot cobbler I made for you. To thank-you for helping me with the silks at Mr. Lo's shop." She said as she took the cloth off the top of the basket to let him examine her creation.

Yu looked at the confectionery. Mmm, apricots and peaches.

"I am not worthy of such a magnificent gift, but I will accept." He gives her a short bow, accepts the box with both hands and extends an arm toward the back where he came from. "Would you be interested in joining me for a meal?"

"I would be honored. I hope it meets your expectations." She said as she followed Mr. Yu. She found Chinatown very interesting, and different from the rest of Chicago. Though from what she had read in the paper it was not so different, there were gang wars all their own, and raging fairly brutally at the moment.

Yu leads Shayla to the back room where there was a small table with a plate of half finished food and a pot of steaming tea. Yu places the box on the table in the middle. "Did you find Mr. Lo's wares satisfactory?"
