She was afraid.

It was the blackness she was fearful of. She was used to the dark but this was different, and it filled her with dread. It was threatening. Suffocating.

She sank to her knees, eyes wide open, searching desperately for light.

She opened her mouth, but there was no noise. Her lips moved silently: "Help."

And a song broke through the darkness, and with it came a light.

Quiet at first – a single voice – growing louder and louder, feeding the light until her vision filled with white. The song was beautiful and unearthly... it was wordless, and yet she understood it. It was harsh, and yet she knew she was safe. And when she tried to hum it, its strange melody eluded her.
