[1v1] FIGHT ME LIKE A MAN (West/Jove)

School had gone on like always. Crazy things happened. Bizarre events took place and students had inevitably suffered the consequences. Although he had many diversions over the past few months, there was something one little ghost had not forgotten about.

Jove lingered around the outside the gym, seeking advancement of long term goal. To get stronger. Become a better fighter. Kick some hunter butt. Er. Shins.

After all, there was only so much strengthening he could do on his own. He had achieved much, but he had to actually go against someone else to get a real taste of battle! And fighting his friends was only a half-effort... Could anyone go all out against their friends? He needed to find someone who wouldn't pull their punches to know how he really measured up. So the little ghost continued to loiter around, hoping to find someone else ready for a fight.

It had been a very long time since he had gone looking for a fight. He told himself he had too much to do to be brawling, that he could just live without it for a while, but if that was truly the case then he had no idea why was he going completely out of his way to pass the gym when he was supposed to be heading to the demon dorms. West had felt strange ever since he had returned from that one trip to Christmas Town, and his antsy suspiciousness only increased when he was alone. He didn't want to be alone right now.

The boil changed course and almost broke into a run when he saw a small shape lingering outside the building. As he closed the distance between them West tried to make it look like he wasn't anxious to reach his destination, but he had a feeling he had failed completely. Eventually, the identity of the student he was gunning for became clear, and West grinned when he realized who it was.

"Jove," he sighed as he came to a stop. "Surely yer not just standin' around for yer health? Y'wanna fight, right? Tell me you wanna fight." He felt something approaching protectiveness toward the kid occasionally, but that camaraderie could never diminish the memory of Jove ******** up his share of hunters. He could hold his own and West wouldn't coddle him. No, this was going to be good.

Jove went through a whole range of emotion when he spotted West booking it towards the gym at as fast a walk as possible. At first there had been alarm, but it didn't appear that there was anyone on his tail to warrant a chase. Alarm had been followed by mild disappointment. West was a nice guy, surely he wouldn't want to fight with a little kid like himself...

And then, his ears perked. Hell yes he wanted to fight! The pup rarely smiled, but he was able to pull a rather feral grin on occasion. And this was such an occasion, with white sharp teeth bared eagerly. Maybe West wouldn't go at it seriously, but Jove had seen him fight. The wrath demon was a powerful brawler, and the pup was sure to learn a thing or two!

It didn't occur to him for a second that he might be beaten senseless before the day was out.

The pup's tail wagged as he blasted through the gym doors, and waited impatiently at the center of the large gym.

West's reaction to Jove's enthusiasm was less a giggle and more a manly chuckle, or at least he chose to think that as he followed the ghost inside. The speedy stomp he had traveled at just minutes before slowed to a sedate stroll. He was going to fight and he was content. There was no need to rush.

He was still smirking when he reached Jove's side again. "So. How we gonna do this?" West kicked his booted foot out a couple of inches in front of him, then shifted his weight as he brought it back down to the ground. "You gonna gnaw on my ankles'r somethin'?"

West's lack of haste had the pup shifting his weight impatiently, all that unspent youthful energy oozing out in the only way possible. He had not yet learned to combine patience with anticipation the same way the demon had. His tail wagged when West finally made it, although it sagged at the demon's words. The pup scowled. Certainly he was tall enough to not gnaw on ankles!

Without a second thought, the pup quickly shifted into an older version of himself, still slim, very much on the scrawny side, but taller. This newer form wasn't out in public very often, and certainly he never had a chance to fight this way, but... taller!

Despite his fluffed up form, Jove still had no idea how to use it effectively. So he frowned for a couple seconds, and then stomped on West's foot with his heeled boot.

"That's adorab..." West stopped his taunting when Jove began to change, growing up in front of him without a second thought or any obvious concern. He was still fairly small, but that hardly mattered. What other powers was the kid hiding?

West grumbled out a curse as his foot was stomped, then stepped away. It would have been easy to retaliate with Jove so close, but he did nothing. This deserved some time to sink in. "Y'figure that out jus' now?"

Jove had taken a defensive, ready-to-move posture after the foot stomping, bristling at what West had been about to say. He was not adorable! He could be tough and unadorable just like the rest of his peers! The pup snorted in response to the demon's question, although what that meant was anyone's guess.

He gave West a few seconds, but after that, the demon's retaliation began looking less and less likely. The pup's tail wilted. He stood up a bit straighter, and tilted his head ever so slightly in confusion. West had wanted to fight him, right?

With a wordless murmur, the pup reached out with an invisible ghostly tendril and jabbed West in the shoulder. It was a little rough, but clearly an inquisitive "are we still gonna fight?" jab. The pup hadn't exactly figured out how to use his fists.

Something prodded him, something he couldn't see beyond the indentation it made in his shirt, and West straightened with a mutter and a frown. Right, fighting. It wasn't that he had forgotten that he was in the middle of a brawl or anything, it was more like he was gathering information about his surroundings and stuff. Yeah.

"All right," he said, mostly to himself. It was time to move. West crouched slightly, shifted his weight, then lunged forward, jabbing a fist at Jove as quickly as he could before stepping back. Just a test.

Jove was caught completely unprepared, and was sent reeling backwards as the fist collided with his face. He didn't even see it coming.

As he was falling backwards, he reached out with half a dozen of those ghostly, invisible tendrils, and violently shoved West away from him as hard as he could. It was a gut reaction the pup could only now take advantage of with his fluid ghostly form. The free-flowing movement it allowed him as a third year was far beyond what he could accomplish while firmly trapped inside a solid shape.

The same oozing of invisible ghost essence caught him before he could hit the ground, and pushed him back to an upright stance. The pup rubbed his jaw. Even though it was not the side that West had struck, there was already a hint of a bruise creeping up his neck.

He hadn't bothered to wonder where the ghostly finger that had tapped him might have come from. Stranger things happened around here all the time. But when six more invisible arms sent him flying across the room, West couldn't help putting two and two together as he fell, cracking the back of his head on the gym's FEAR floor.

"Where'd y'get these fancy tricks?" he muttered, pushing himself up on an elbow and squinting at his opponent. He was going to have to try breaking out the big guns. In a minute. As soon as he felt like standing up again.

Jove winced as West hit the floor. Sometimes he forgot living things didn't bounce like his own ghostly body did, when they hit ground they could hit HARD. The pup kept his distance this time, but the way he leaned forward it looked as though he wanted to be sure West was okay.

His tail wagged when the demon sat up, and then even more at the muttered question. So his tricks were fancy? They were really surprising? If it was hard for West to figure it out, would it be hard for hunters too? Jove sure hoped so.

"Okay," he sighed, sitting up and crossing his legs loosely in front of him. This was no time to lick his wounds. West took a deep breath and swiftly brought his hands together in front of his chest. They began to glow as they always seemed to no matter how he summoned his FEAR, their light sinking back into his skin soon after.

West opened his eyes. Hm. No disorientation, no surprise berserking, no rage drain. What he'd done didn't seem as lasting as it had in the past, but it was worth it to feel like himself. He'd have to remember to thank his mentor. Or punch him in the face.

He got back to his feet, jerking his thumbs toward his chest. "Don't jus' stand there... c'mon!"

Jove's head tilted in curiosity as West composed himself on the floor. Was this... It had to be... The pup had never been good at meditating, he was sure that's what West was doing even though it only lasted a short time. And suddenly the pup came to another false impression. West, the gruff, yet kind and wise demon who could meditate without fidgeting.

When West finally stood, smaller ghost's ears perked at the summons. Okay! He leapt forward without any real plan of attack, and ended up barrelling straight into West's chest with a firm, if somewhat confused head-butt.
