Another summons was sent out for Cricket's personal students in the same fashion each had been given a tangle of thread to fight with. Some had un-knotted it..others had probably taken scissors to it or just tangled it up tighter than Christmas lights.

Never the less, the glowing insects came with one note and no more string: "It is time to learn something you will use quite often: Come to the infirmary." No date or time - it was expected with Cricket that 'come' meant 'Right now'. Either that or she creepily knew everybody's schedule and just made sure everybody happened to be available at the time of her summons. That was always a possibility with how much the nurse knew but didn't let on.

The infirmary had been reorganized - that would be the first and most obvious thing upon entering the room. Several cots had been rearranged in a circle - one for each student - and on each of them was a very sad looking minipet, laying on its side and giving them all piteous looks and small whimpers. It was probably for the best that there were no questions about how Cricket seemed to always have a supply of injured minipets for her classes.

Though her answer would have been 'I borrow them from the Minipet Healer in town as patients'. Really, what were you thinking she did?

"I'll start as soon as you're all seated. For now, please pick a cot and get yourself introduced to your...patient."

ABOUT THE MINIPETS

- Each cot has either a Totem or Scent on it. What kind is up to you. (You can even (GASP) choose an inkjar color for them that doesn't exist! O_O )
- A quick examination shows that they each have a sprain in one of their legs.
- Let me know what kind of Minipet your student is working on by bolding it for me.
- I will put up the next phase on Tuesday, January 8th

Something she would use quite often? Astra liked the sound of that. She had no idea what this would be of course, but it was bound to be a extremely important skill if it was taught by nurse cricket, right?

Making all haste towards the infirmary (because she really didn't want to be late in case Cricket got mad or she missed something important), the fairy entered the area and saw that it had been changed. There was a circle of cots, and as she hovered closer she saw they each had their own minipet in them. Her face fell at their state, obviously in pain. She flew around each until she stopped at a single cot which held a pearl colored minipet. She guessed it was some sort of Dream scent, and it looked at her, it's slit eyes drooping .

"Aww, the poor thing..." She looked closer at the minipet, noting how it was holding one of it's legs. It was stretched out, and the scent barely moved it. Perhaps some sort of sprain?

Malodore entered the infirmary eagerly - well, eagerly in spirit. Outwardly, it looked as composed as ever to most eyes, though after all the time they'd spent together Cricket might well have started picking out the subtle tells of plague doctor emotion. As soon as it entered, its gaze was drawn to the minipets... oh. Oh. With the little whimpers, it was too easy to imagine Luce there...

Quickly, Malodore hurried to one of the unattended cots, this one occupied by a wispy creature that looked to be a fog scent. "Addolcire ora, piccolo," it said quietly, extending its empathy around it. It closed its eyes for a moment against the creature's pain, though it couldn't detect the source that way, of course. Still, it could detect the abatement of said pain, should it be lucky enough to do so.

Its long hands flitted over the creature as it did a quick examination; a knot in its wispy body indicated a sprain in the right hind leg. Hm. No other injuries were in evidence. Va bene. It laid one soothing hand on the creature's head and scritched as it turned its own head up to look at Cricket.

When Jove arrived he found two of his peers already in attendance, but rather than speak to the kind fairy who let him play mushroom games at her booth or the veterinarian in training, he hurried to the nearest cot.

This creature was a minipet Jove was not too familiar with, but the Pyrite Totem was certainly recognizable with such distinctive features. The big curving horns, the beady eyes, the... champing mouth... As odd as it was, it was clearly hurting.

Jove sat down next to it, and carefully extended a hand, palm up. It whuffled and made some peculiar noises, but what was most noticeable was the way it tried to move one leg, only to end up placing it back where it lay. It seemed to avoid bending at that one joint. Would Cricket show them how to make this injury better?

Without knowing exactly what sort of action would comfort a totem, Jove had to resort to methods he used on his own foxfires once the creature seemed to lose interest in champing on the tips of his fingers. Rubbing right behind it's horns had the little thing squinting and making a different sort of noise, one that the wisp could only interpret as a happier sound.

Though Yin fully intended to not be late and to arrive promptly, reading the note took its time, and by the time he arrived at Nurse Cricket's office a few other students were already there. Flushing slightly in embarrassment he made silently made his way over to a cot, the slight glow surrounding one of the remaining creatures attracting his attention.

The comet scent was clearly in some amount of pain, whimpering slightly, and had Yin encountered it anywhere else he might have given serious thought to putting it out of its misery, serious thought to what he was going to have for dinner, or both. Instead he used one clawed finger to lightly scratch under its chin to distract it as he looked at it, looking for anything that seemed off. There didn't seem to be any blood but the left foreleg seemed a bit larger than the right. The scent was holding it out stiffly, and while he wasn't sure if it was sprained, broken, or if a muscle had been pulled he felt fairly certain that this was the origin of the pain.

Cricket made no mention of the fact they apparently had a latecomer who would be arriving..well..when she was ready. Unless she wasn't taking this seriously. Then the nurse would help her re-evaluate her options. But with that out of her mind, she picked up an infected totem that looked to be acting particularly morose, petting it between the horns, before carefully placing it in her lap, holding onto one of its front legs.

"As you can see, I've given you all a patient to work with today." she probably would have waved the paw she was holding at them if it wasn't injured...or she was the type to do such a thing. "To spare you wondering, each patient has some variation of a twist or sprain in a leg. Not broken, but not entirely the most pleasant thing to work with. After all - one cannot knit FEAR back together that hasn't been severed. Visualizing needles or cloth will not help you here."

Keeping the totem balanced with one arm, she carefully reached out to maneuver - with great delicacy - the offended limb. "In these places, FEAR becomes like a giant knot," she tilted her head, certain that the nature of the knot-task was not clearer, "and must be untangled. In fact, often times if there is a case of the muscles hurting it is because of a knot in the FEAR which must be carefully pulled free to fix."

Cricket ran her thumb along the swollen area with as light of a touch as possible, leaving a faint glimmering trail of FEAR that began to knot up almost immediately.

"Until you can 'feel' the FEAR as it is, being able to give it a visible shape is important in treatment." she explained as she began to pull at the strings with a light touch, pausing to change where she was pulling at, at times, until she finally freed the tangle, smoothing her thumb over it again before she stretched the limb more readily. She gave her patient a fear candy before setting him on the floor to walk on the newly fixed limb.

"Today's lesson will be two steps: making the FEAR visually actualized, and fixing the knot. The second part will be harder than the first, as it requires less of my teaching and more practice in unknotting string." there might have been a small smirk as she held her hand, palm up.

"When practicing the manipulation of FEAR, I always recommend the use of the thumb - it is the finger closes to your heart and core, therefore has a more natural connection to it." she drew her other finger down her hand, arm, and up to the center of her chest as she spoke in a not-so-subtle Mushishi reference, hush you.

"Therefore, drawing FEAR out is better done with it. Think of your thumb like..." she clearly had to think of a good way to word this. "When you rub a balloon against the carpet and then above somebody's head, their hair will be attracted to it." Cricket finally decided on that comparison. "Try and get that kind of excited magnetism into your hand to attract the energy that is knotted up - which will be easier to do because it is bigger."

She scratched her little patient on the rump before nodding.

"After that, it's a matter of unknotting. Something I cannot teach you."

HEALING TIEM!
FEAR Visualization

To make the FEAR 'visible' on your patient, roll 1d4.
If you roll a 1, good job! You managed to make the FEAR visible without hurting your patient!
If you roll a 2, be careful with how much contact you make with that sprain. The patient winces a little bit, but it looks like you can move on.
If you roll a 3, the fear is just barely visible, but you've upset your patient. It doesn't want to let you near the limb anymore. (Roll another 1d4. If you roll even, you manage to wrangle it into letting you work. Roll until you can move on)
If you roll a 4, you've upset your patient and you didn't attract the FEAR. (Roll another 1d4. If you roll odd, you've placated your patient enough to let you try again. Roll for visibility again.)

Once you have made the FEAR visible, it's time to get unknotting!

Untying the Knot

You will roll d4s until the result you've rolled is 16.

Example

I roll 1d4. It turns out 3. I roll another d4. It's a 1. My total is now 4. I keep rolling until they add up to 16

If you roll a 1 - it seems like your string it getting a little bit more wound up. Better try another angle.
If you roll a 2 - the knotted FEAR starts tangling up. Hmm, what if you were to try pulling this other spot...
If you roll a 3 - The knot is getting smaller, but the string you need to pull is really close to the central cluster. You have to play at it for a little while.
If you roll a 4 - Hey! That was super effective. Pulling that seemed to have loosened everything up a lot.

You have a week (Next Thursday) to roll for your knotting-job. Once your student is done, however, Cricket still has one last order of business.

Astra had to concentrate hard and listen well to understand what Professor Cricket was saying. This was a all new concept for her. Visualizing FEAR, untangling it with her thumb, she had never heard this before, nor realized FEAR even acted this way. It sounded like a lot of fun though, to try and heal a sprain without the use of anything other then her own skill. She could now see why she had been given the string in the first place, to prepare her for this lesson.

Turning towards her little totem, she sat down on the side of the cot "Okay...I gotta untangle the FEAR..." She leaned over, slipping one hand under the totem's leg while she gingerly pressed her thumb on it's leg with the other one. It yelped, but it didn't make any other moves.

Now she had to make the FEAR visible. Trying to picture the carpet analogy that was used, the fairy rubbed her thumb over the affected area until she saw the faint traces of FEAR, quickly forming into a knot. She beamed at her success so far.

It was a little difficult to pull at the string, considering it was attached to a minipet and she was dealing with FEAR and not actual inanimate string. And if she wasn't mistaken, she may have just made it more tangled. Did this mean she had just made the totem feel more pain? It wasn't something she wanted to think about, so she tried to untangle it so it wouldn't be in pain.

Finding a particular tangled part, the fairy tugged at it and managed to loosen a few other knots in the process. That made everything much easier!

It was also a plus that her mini wasn't moving around too much, more interested in watching what she was doing.

"Hhhmmm...This ones hard to get at..." She grumbled, trying to pull at one of the strings but finding she was pulling at others instead. She worked on getting those loosened up before she tried to tackle the one that was stuck in the middle.

As soon as she tried to pull the middle string, it began to knot up again as well as tangling up other parts. "Oooh! I just untangled those!" She huffed, which got a whimper from the totem. "Don't worry! I'll get it untangled" She said to the mini. "It's just...gonna take some time."

Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to keep pulling at the string like that, as she found herself with even more knots to untangle. This was more complicated then she first thought. One of her antenna curled around to wipe her forehead as she concentrated hard on getting rid of the extra knots

And just like that, She pulled at a rather big knot, and that seemed to loosen everything up. Astra began to pull apart the rest of the knots and, with a sigh, leaned back and admired the string of FEAR that was now untangled.

Though, did this mean her mini was all better now? She didn't want to touch or prod the mini just encase it wasn't, so she waited for further instruction from the professor. For now though she watched the other students with Interest, wondering how well they would do with their patients.

Malodore listened carefully, taking notes whenever it could, though the scent kept making faint sounds whenever it took its hand away to write. It couldn't bear to leave the poor thing whimpering like that for too long...

As Cricket explained, though, it felt gratified and fortunate - not only had it learned well from the string, it also illuminated further what she had demonstrated using Shehk. So, one could manipulate the body through FEAR... as went the FEAR, so went the body. It was truly fascinating. And the idea of manifesting it, so - of visualizing it - that was work it had never learned in the Casa.

"Ah, now, piccolo," it said soothingly as the scent flinched again. Time to practice, though it rather wished it had a more advanced patient to practice on. It did not want to accidentally hurt this little one, and be unable to explain why. Gently, it cupped the injured limb in one hand, steadying the creature before closing its eyes and seeking the center of its own FEAR.

Slowly, it focused its FEAR into its hand, into its thumb - such a small part of its own body, and a larger challenge than merely focusing into limbs. But fine motor skills had always been easier for it, and it wasn't long before the plague doctor had a delicate visualization of FEAR spread out before it, the patient lying still and calm against it as it worked.
