intricatewebs【 Dinah is very intelligent. She had gone to school up until Kaladiya died, and from there successfully attempted to educate herself. She loves to read, and is particularly proficient in arithmetic. She tries to keep herself as well-informed as she can, as ignorance is one of her biggest pet peeves. Dinah is an independent girl as well. Having to take care of oneself and one's sister for the past six years requires one to grow up more quickly than usual. She has learned to do most household tasks, tasks both conventionally female-oriented and male-oriented, on her own, and is of the assumption that she will live with her two companions for as long as she can and then by herself as long as she is physically able. And though Dinah is quite proficient in physical labor, she is very stubborn and refuses to work with anyone but the two people with whom she lives.

Something that also contributes to Dinah's independence is the fact that she is very distrustful of most people other than those living in the Ruskin cottage. She has seen what happens when one places even an ounce of trust in someone else, or when one lets their guard down for just a second. She feels it is better to keep one's distance from people, that way they can never hurt you. 」

intricatewebs【 Dinah was born in a small cottage in the forest outside of a small village on a snowy December day, and then a little under two years later was followed by her younger sister Elizabeth. The four lived in relative peace in their remote section of the forest. Dinah often played outside with her sister, acting out the story of a heroic princess who saved her sister from the wrath of an evil dragon, or pretending to be the most dangerous pirates in all the land, while her mother baked or tended to the garden and her father chopped wood. When she was six, she began attending school diligently every morning, rain or shine. However, this tranquility would not last forever. Tragically, in her ninth year, both her mother and father died in a terrible accident. One terribly stormy night, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe were coming home from doing business in the village when lightning struck a nearby tree. A dead limb fell from the tree on top of the Monroe's cart, crushing and killing the girls' parents. Dinah and here sister were graciously taken in by a family friend Kaladiya Ruskin.

Traumatized by the death of her parents, Dinah was initially silent and withdrawn. She despised Kaladiya's nephew, Natale, as she thought he was a terrible spoiled brat, and she no longer had the energy to play adventure games with her sister, so often she spent her days cooped up in her bedroom. The only thing that drew her out was Kaladiya's sorcery, the chemistry of which fascinated her. Eventually, she came out of her shell and she befriended Natale. The three children were inseparable.

When Duke Truman began courting Kaladiya, Dinah was as equally taken with him as her aunt. The Duke was so kind and generous and romantic... she usually chided herself for thinking such shallow things, but this time she simply couldn't help it. She couldn't even start to identify with Natale and his wariness of the situation. She soon would, however, when tragedy struck again when an angry mob appeared at their door one night. Kaladiya woke Dinah and the others from their peaceful slumber, and soon the young girl had dressed herself for the cold night and stuffed her knapsack full of books. Only once did she glance out the window to see what could possibly be cause for such conduct - she saw the mass of people arriving, their torches and pitchforks, the hatred that seethed from their expressions and the words that Dinah thankfully could not hear from inside the house.

Though by this time she was far too old to be doing such things, Dinah sobbed and refused to let go of her aunt as the latter attempted to usher the children into the woods. When she finally let go, Kaladiya's nephew, who might as well have been her brother at this point, took charge and led them deep into the forest. Dinah and her sister buried themselves as far beneath the old tree's roots as they could while Natale went back to the cottage. She did not need to leave with him to know her aunt's fate.

When Natale returned, the three set off for the south, where they took up residence in a cottage by the sea. Dinah swore then that she would never be so naiive as to trust somebody, as her aunt once did.
