XSXSXSXSThe house like he expected: a two-story home with a wonderfully-planned, blooming garden surrounding it from all sides; a small porch that ran through the whole first floor; white, arching windows with glower-patterned curtains pushed to the sides; cream-colored walls with a gray roof. It was one of those cozy home that he could imagine a family consisting of two smiling parents, a hyperactive child and one little dog would comfortably live in. It was so different from that small, run-down apartment he lived in a day ago. "Well then, come in, Lloyd."

Lloyd ran a hand through his hair and followed silently behind the man he was going to call father from now on. He let out a snort at the thought. Like he would ever call this man 'Dad'; he was much more in better terms with the garbage man than him. Louis Hudson entered through the entrance door first and Lloyd came soon after, pulling his suitcase with him. The room they were in next was the living room, and it didn't came as a surprise to him when, like the outside of the house, it was stylishly furnished and homely. "Your room is up here, Lloyd," Louis called out to him and Lloyd turned away from examining the fireplace and moved to follow the man up the stairs. Soon enough, he was shown into a bare room nearest to the stair landing. It held only the simple necessities; a bed with light blue sheets, an empty drawer with a mirror, curtains and a dark-colored rug. He moved deeper inside, placing his suitcase near the bed and looked out the window. His father coughed loudly and Lloyd turned to look at him with that same blank expression on his face. "Well then, Lloyd, I'll let you settle in. I'll call you when dinner's ready, alright?"

Lloyd pasted on a smile and nodded. When the door was closed and he was left alone in his new room, the smile on his face vanished immediately and with a curse, he kicked his suitcase and slumped on the bed, burying his hands in his platinum hair.

overthecliffSkyler waved goodbye at her friend before she opened the door to her home and stepped inside, immediately calling out an I’m home! She glanced down at her wristwatch and sighed in relief when she saw that it was still before eight o’clock. Normally, her parents wouldn’t even let her stay out this late on a school day, but her excuse of working on a group project with her friends worked; it helped that Mikaela, her childhood friend, was with her. Her mother appeared from the kitchen to meet her, a spatula in one of her hands. Skyler bounded over to her and kissed her on the cheek. “Welcome back, darling,” her mother said, “Dinner’s about ready. Go and change your clothes so we can eat.” Skyler nodded and was about to turn towards the stairs, but stopped when her mother laid a hand on her shoulder. Looking back, she furrowed her brows upon seeing a frown on her mother’s face. “Something wrong, Mom?” she asked.

Marie Hudson sighed and shook her head. “Can you call down your,” Here she paused before continuing on with an expression that made her looked like she’d swallowed something sour, “Can you call down your brother, too. He’s in the room nearest to the stairs.” With that, the older woman pivoted on her heels and walked back to the kitchen. Skyler watched her for a moment before starting up the stairs. So, her half-brother was here now. With slight frown, Skyler thought over that. Just last week, she didn’t know that she actually had another sibling, a half-brother at that. Her father had announced it over dinner suddenly; had explained that he had a child with another woman, and that child would be living with them from now on. While her mother had raged at her father for that secret, Skyler herself didn’t know what to think or what to feel. She had always been an only child, the precious daughter, and she had always wanted a younger sibling, had always been kind of jealous when her friends talk about their own siblings. But … Lloyd was different; for one, he was at the same age as her, and had a different mother. He was a physical proof of a time when her father was unfaithful to her mother.

Then again, maybe he didn’t know, too. Sighing, Skyler opened the door to her room and laid down her bag on the floor. Within a few minutes, she’d changed out of her uniform and dressed herself in a thin, checkered sweatshirt and half-pants. She stepped out of her room, closed the door and looked towards the plain white door down the hall. Her half-brother’s room was just across hers, the door a few meters away from hers on the opposite wall. A bathroom was located at the end of the hall and it was only their rooms that were here. The master bedroom, her father’s study and a guestroom were at the other side of the house; just turn left from the stairs, instead of right. Her heart was beating loudly from nervousness as Skyler neared the door. Once she stood in front of it, she breathed deeply in and out and then knocked on the door.
“Uh, Lloyd?” she called out hesitantly, not knowing what to call him. ‘Brother’ was too familiar, wasn’t it? “Dinner’s ready.”

XSXSXSXSHis clothes were in a disarray in the dresser drawers, the clothes having been tossed inside without an ounce of care. The culprit himself could be found laying down on the bed, an arm over his eyes and feet spread wide. He was breathing deeply in and out but Lloyd was not asleep. In contrast to the silence covering his whole room, his own mind was in chaos. Ideas and thoughts ran amuck inside his brain, envoking different, contrasting emtions that unsettled him. It made him restless; everything inside this house made him want to destroy – to get his hands on anything and tear them apart with his bare hands until they were nothing more than dust. Lloyd suddenly sat up, ruffling his hair in frustration. With a small frown on his face, he stood up and began pulling off his T-shirt to change into a something thicker, feeling cold all of a sudden.

A knock on his door caught his attention and Lloyd stared at the painted wood with an indifferent look. If only his stare was enough to push others away. He was about to turn back to what he was doing and ignore the knock when a voice sounded through the wooden barrier. He tensed up and now, his expression held a hint of surprise and wonder, mixed in with bitter resentment that made his brows furrow and his lips to twist in a small bitter smile. So it was the daughter that came to call him down. Skyler, wasn’t it? Her name. What a name to grow up with.

Striding towards the door, minding not that he was still bare-chested, he opened the door to reveal the brunette at the other side of the doorway. One look at her and Lloyd was taken up in that storm of emotions he’d find himself often these days. Leaning slightly on the doorway, he pasted on a friendly smile, keeping his posture relaxed and welcoming. ”Hello – Skyler, right? The name’s Lloyd. I’ll be right back.” With that, he pivoted on his heels and walked back to the his dresser, picking up a gray sweater from the mess of clothes and put it on. Pulling another smile on his face, he turned back to the brunette, closing the door to his room as he stepped out. ”Let’s go.”
