                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

While most people probably wouldn't find the musty smells of old paper and wood appealing, for Langston Everett it was home. He was a librarian after all, and books were both his occupation and his lifelong greatest love. At the moment, he was going through the piles of books that had been left unshelved at the end of the last school year, in that annual rush of last-minute library returns during which students realized they'd failed to bring back that one reference book or novel they'd checked out so many months before and were, as a result, accruing quite a large overdue fee.

He carefully lifted one book from the top of the closest pile, a heavy tome whose title had unfortunately been worn off through years of use. As usual, he flipped through the pages, checking for any torn pages or other damage, before cataloging it and noting down its serial number before placing it to the side for later shelving. He repeated this process with each of the books in turn, running his hands over their covers and spines as gently as any lover might. It was a long and slow process, true, but in Langston's opinion books only deserved as much, and besides, it being only the first day of classes it was unlikely any students were going to need to come by any time soon.

...Speaking of classes, though, he supposed he should set out a display of books that would be required reading for the students so that they could be easily found--some students had such a hard time looking through the shelves, and that meant books were taken out of their proper places and put back who-knew-where and that only caused problems for anyone coming in after them. ...He supposed he could do that after he'd finished cataloging all these other books. One task at a time.

As he picked up the next book to be looked over, there was the soft rustling sound of paper on paper, before the middle section of pages slid right out of its binding and onto the floor. With a soft tsk and a grimace, Langston knelt, gently picking up the fallen pages. Luckily, they'd stayed together, but the book as a whole was surely no longer fit to be checked out of the library. He turned to his catalog, penciling in the book's title and making a note to see about finding a new copy for the library. With any luck, he'd be able to get it as a donation. It was such a shame, losing books to wear and tear, but at least he'd hoped it'd served its purpose well. He set it aside in the discard pile and turned back to his work.

Ah, the first day of school. Students returning from vacations, teachers preparing for their classes...and here was Langston, nose-deep in a pile of books, deaf to the world around him.

"did you find everything you need?"

You keep me on the edge of my seat
I bite my tongue so you don't hear me
I wanna hate every part of you in me

xTristan carefully and quietly pushed the door to the library open. With any luck he could sneak around the librarian and stay out of his classes. The last thing he wanted to do was be here. He wasn't terribly new or maybe he was. He had gotten transferred here, so he supposed he was new. New school, new people, new everything. He didn't like it. Don't get the kid wrong, he thought the placed looked like, the students didn't seem too bad, and the teachers were...well, they were attractive to say the least since he never allowed himself the chance to actually speak with on. Most teachers didn't mind Tristan. He talked when he was allowed to, he wasn't too much of a troublemaker, and he obeyed the rules...to an extent. He was definitely not the most well behaved student, but he didn't get detentions like it was no ones business. The guy was an introvert. He preferred to play video games or read (if he could bring himself to it) or anything inside away from the likes of other people. Today really wasn't going to help him too much either.

xIt was his first day at a new school. Okay, so that counted for the countless numbers of freshmen too, but they probably knew someone from the school. Tristan was on his own here. His mothers words rang in his head, "Just be yourself and make some friends!" Had she intended to make it sound so easy when it was not? Whatever the case, Tristan decided to go find a dark corner in the library to hide in for the whole day. He had a phone, a portable PS, an iPod, and earbuds. He could tune out the entirety of the school in peace. Well, hopefully he could. The smell of old books smacked Tristan in the face, but he didn't mind it. He liked the smell of bookstores, so this smell was welcomed. All he had to do was pinpoint the librarian and avoid him at all costs. The guy wouldn't probably force him to attend class. Tristan's head turned from left to right and he eventually ended up walking backwards. Where was this libraria--. Tristan jumped as bumped into something and fell over after the back of his foot his something hard, which caused him to lose balance. The toppling of books could be heard along with a thud from Tristan hitting the floor. He sat up and looked to see that he was on the ground with a variety of books that had come from one once neatly stacked tower. Teal eyes widened as an embarrassed and nervous blush flooded the male's cheeks. His eyes scanned up to a man with light hair and glasses, whom Tristan was willing to bet was the librarian he had been trying to avoid. "I-I'm sorry!" Tristan apologized as he sprang into action, picking up the books and stacking them up again. "I didn't see it; I'm sorry!"

                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

The thuds of several books hitting the floor, followed by the sound of something much larger falling. However engrossed in his work he might've been, that was definitely enough to get Langston's attention. He turned his head in the direction the noise had come from, blinking owlishly, to find two things: firstly, that his carefully stacked pile of books to be reshelved (reference, art and history, he mentally noted) had toppled to the ground; and secondly, there was a boy--probably the reason for the aforementioned louder sound and toppled books--sprawled on the floor nearby.

The boy was definitely a student, but Langston didn't recognize him--and he didn't look like a freshman. Then again, as only the librarian, it wasn't as though Langston was in close contact with all the students at Princeton so it wasn't impossible that he'd simply never taken notice of the boy before. The only students Langston tended to remember were those who visited the library often--and on the other end of the spectrum, those who he'd banned from the library for being disruptive or destructive to the books.

He untangled his legs, getting up from his cross-legged seated position and brushing off his pants as he walked over to the boy, who'd already begun frantically setting the books back. Poor thing already looked embarrassed; it'd just be making things worse for him if Langston were to get angry at him. At the least, the books he'd knocked over had all been in fairly good condition so they probably hadn't taken much damage in the fall. He knelt back down, helping the boy put the rest of the fallen books back in their stack.

"Don't worry about it,"he said, smiling gently at the student. "I'm sure you didn't mean it, and besides," he held up one of the fallen books, flipping quickly through it to show the student, "they haven't been damaged, so no harm done."

With the books back in their properly sorted pile, he stood again, looking at the other stacks around him. That had been the last of what needed to be sorted, it seemed--all that was left now was to place them all back on the shelves. He glanced inquisitively back at the student. Come to think of it, what was a student doing in here at this hour anyway? He checked the time--classes hadn't started just yet so this boy by all accounts should be in a classroom somewhere, not in the library."I haven't seen you around here before,"he said, carefully keeping his tone friendly so as not to make the boy any more nervous than he'd already been. "Are you lost?"

"did you find everything you need?"

xTristan calmed down when the man assured him that no harm had been done to the books. The man didn't yell at him like some people might have. Not even a glare came from the man who just smiled kindly at the brunette. "I'm new. My parents transferred me here at the end of last year. I guess I'm one of the newer juniors." Tristan said, but he didn't smile. The red color in his cheeks was finally starting to fade away. Then came the question he wanted to avoid along with a whole slew of others. Tristan was far from lost. He knew where his class was and he knew that he did not want to attend it. What was he to do? Answer honestly? Lie? He couldn't lie on the first day of school and librarian as so nice (which was a little unexpected, but a pleasant surprise). Cue blush getting darker again. He could lie with ease, but now he felt his cheeks were hot. He knew he couldn't get away with it now. He sighed and shook his head as he stood up, placing the last of the books in his arms on the pile. "No, I'm not. I'd just prefer not to attend my first class," he answered honestly as the blush started to leave again. Telling the truth was supposed to feel good, but it really didn't. He would have preferred to be a teachers aid for his first period rather than going to the class he had. Did they even allow that here? Tristan didn't know and he didn't know any teachers here. If they had student aid/teacher aid then they were probably already taken by the students that had been at the school the year before. Tristan finally looked up at the man's face. "I...kind of came here to avoid going to classes." Kind of? Well, it wasn't a lie but if those two words were taken away from the sentences then it would be more accurate.

                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

A transfer student then. That would explain why Langston had never seen the boy before. Try though he might however, Langston couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in surprise at the boy's second statement. Didn't want to go to class, huh? Well, it wasn't as though he couldn't understand that sort of sentiment--he'd been rather reclusive as a student himself, after all. "I...see." he said simply. He could just escort the boy to class, but there was still much work to do in the library and honestly, he knew from experience that if the boy didn't want to go to class, he'd probably just find some other place to wander off to instead. Better to keep him here where Langston could at least be sure that he'd be out of trouble.

"Well, I can tell you that my colleagues are all very good at what they do, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about from them as long as you do what you're supposed to...but maybe that's not why you're avoiding classes," he said, the placid smile back on his face. Students had a lot of reasons for avoiding class, he knew--fear of teachers, bullying, just wanting to be alone... It wasn't exactly his place to go poking around in them, however. He was only the school librarian, not a counselor, after all. "In any case," he continued, "I'm not going to force you to go to class; the only way to be sure you'd actually go there would be to take you myself and I have to reshelve all these books...you're welcome to stay here for the time being, but please do promise me you'll try to attend your afternoon classes at the very least. A school is for learning, after all, and while I do believe the library is a wonderful resource for that, you'll still need to go to class."

He bent down to pick up one of the stacks of books, quickly placing them onto a cart for easier transport, before turning back to the student. "Since I might be seeing you around here more often, I'm Langston Everett," he said by way of introduction as he began to move towards the bookshelves. "Feel free to call if you need me."

"did you find everything you need?"

xTristan listened as the man spoke. He wasn't going to take Tristan to class nor make him. It was surprising to hear such a thing from a teacher or staff member of a school. "Um...yeah, sure. I promise..." Tristan said, his tone of voice filled with confusion and slight hesitance. He was very confused. Tristan shook his head a bit before scratching the back of his head. Tristan was trying to figure out why the man let him remain in the library. While thinking he nearly missed the guys name. "Oh, I'm Tristan Moore. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Everett." Tristan smiled a bit. The students were supposed to address the staff and Mr. Name right? That's how it usually was. Langston might have given Tristan his full name, but out of respect he had to use the last name when addressing him unless told otherwise. Tristan looked around and walked over to a table. He set his backpack in a chair. He wasn't sure what to really do. There was no homework for him to do, he didn't feel like playing a game, there were no students for him to attempt to speak with. Tristan didn't think he needed anything from Mr. Everett, except maybe something to do.

xTristan turned hit head to look at the librarian as he walked off to some shelves where the books on the cart belonged. He still felt bad for knocking the books over earlier. Maybe the guy needed some help! Tristan was typically a pretty helpful person especially when he was bored, which he was at this current time. Bored with nothing to do. If he had a laptop he'd gladly play Minecraft, but sadly his laptop was back in his dorm. He sighed and hung his head. Ask or don't ask. He wished he had a flower he could pluck the petals off and do what some girls did in the movies except instead of 'he likes me/he likes me not' Tristan would be saying, 'ask/don't ask'. Tristan tried to visualize a daisy, but his imagination wasn't that good. It was partly the reason he couldn't draw nor paint. He still tried and one by one the petals vanished until they landed on the last one which was 'don't ask.' I'm asking! He thought as he turned and walked over to Mr Everett. "Do you need any help?" he asked as he trailed a comfortable distance behind the light haired male.

                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

"It's very nice to meet you as well, Tristan," Langston said warmly, noting Tristan's polite reply. Despite having been at Princeton for two years already--he'd gotten the job straight out of college--it was still a little strange being addressed as "Mr. Everett;" he was only a few years older than the students themselves after all. But formalities were there for a reason, and he could accept whatever made the students feel more comfortable. Besides, it was probably best that students saw him as some sort of authority figure--all the better for book returns and library behavior.

Sensing the confusion in Tristan's voice, he smiled.
"I'll admit, sometimes I skipped classes to sit in the library when I was a student, myself. So while I can't say I completely approve, I also can't say that I don't understand the feeling--at least a little bit I'd hope." He turned back to his cart and wheeled it off to the shelves to begin his work, leaving Tristan to his own devices. There wasn't much for a student to do in the library at this point--the boy would probably leave of his own accord at one point or another. For now it'd be fine for him to stay here, as long as he wasn't being disruptive or his teacher didn't come looking for him--something he doubted would happen, seeing as it was only the first day.

He'd started placing some books back on the shelves when a voice spoke up behind him. He set the book in his hand back and turned around to see Tristan standing some distance behind him. It seemed the boy had decided to find something else to do after all.
"Well, I can't say some help wouldn't be welcomed," he said, running a hand through his messy hair. He gestured to the still-sizable collection still on the cart. "There's a great many books to be put back, after all. If you're willing to help put there back for me I would be very much grateful for the help."

"did you find everything you need?"

xNow Tristan understood why Mr. Everett wasn't making him leave. It was nice to know that some teachers remember when they were students and can sympathize with those they teach. His eyes followed when Everett gestured at the books on the cart. His eyes scanned over all the books then he glanced back at the other piles where the two had been before they moved away. He didn't even want to count the number of books there were, it nearly made him stumble over again. He looked back at the older male with a smile. "Sure. There isn't much else to do anyway," he said with a light shrug of his shoulders. He'd rather be stuck in the library shelving books rather than running laps in a gym class, singing in a music class, painting in and art class, or so on and so forth. His schedule was in his backpack and he had no idea what his first class was, nor did he remember the rest of his classes. He typically would have them all memorized by name, but he had been dreading today and he didn't bother to glance over the list more than twice. Tristan walked over to Everett and picked one of the books up, looked at it, checked to make sure he was putting it in the right place then shelved it. He'd put these back and let the librarian put another set back. If Tristan was right with how he thought about this then they might get done before afternoon classes, which he had promised to go to.

xAs Tristan went along putting the books away, he stopped a couple times and looked over the library a little more. They were probably some of the most well organized places on the planet. Even this library had everything organized by genre or subject then organized more by author. It seemed to be the typical way to organize books in a library, which just made things easier to go from one library to the next and still find things without too much of a problem. Tristan didn't know how libraries really got this many books. He assumed donations and the library having bought them, but it still seemed ridiculous how many books could fit. How much did they even cost? Tristan shook his head. It was an odd question for him to think about, but he was in a library after all.

                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

Seeing that Tristan was starting to shelve the books already on the cart, Langston moved away to pick up another stack of books and place them elsewhere. He trusted that the boy would be able to put his precious books in their proper places--he prided himself on the library's organization (not that it was much different than the system used in every other library on the planet, but he liked to think that he had put a good deal of work into making sure the library stayed organized well at the least) and it wasn't exactly hard to begin with to put things in alphabetical order by author's last name since all the books on the cart were on the same subject anyway. Besides, the boy looked to be a decently responsible sort, or at least respectful enough not to make a complete mess of things right under a faculty member's nose.

...Nevertheless, the stack of books Langston selected to reshelve were returned to a shelf close to the one where Tristan was already working. It was partly a matter of convenience--there was only one good cart in the library as the other had a squeaky wheel and Langston tried to avoid using that one when he could out of respect for maintaining the quiet atmosphere he so enjoyed in his little haven, one of the only places in the school one could reliably find a quiet spot to think--but the librarian also couldn't help but unconsciously worry over his wares, no matter if they were in good hands or not.

So they continued in this way. The work went by much faster with another pair of hands, and soon enough the intimidatingly large pile of unsorted books had dwindled down to a much more manageable stack. As Langston straightened from putting one of the final books back on one of the bottom-most shelves, he happened to glance at the clock. Despite the cut in the time needed to complete the reshelving job, a good amount of time had still passed since Tristan had first entered the library. He turned back to the boy.

"Thank you for all your help, Tristan," he said, readjusting his glasses, which had slid down his nose when he'd bent down to reshelve the book. "Now then...while I am very grateful for the extra time you've given me and I understand that you wished to avoid classes, first period is nearly over and I'm afraid I don't have anything else for you to do here," he said with an apologetic smile. "If you want to continue to stay here, you'll have to find a way to keep occupied yourself."

"did you find everything you need?"

You keep me on the edge of my seat
I bite my tongue so you don't hear me
I wanna hate every part of you in me
I can't hate the ones who made me

I'll take dignity over industry,
My wardrobe has never meant sh*t to me.
I'll sell my songs, but never my soul,
And what the f*ck happened to rock and roll?

xAs book after book was placed onto a shelf, Tristan hummed softly. He didn't want to be loud enough to echo across the library, but he wanted to be loud enough to hear himself. A soft hum that one couldn't hear unless it was deathly quite was what he settled for. The time past rather quickly and so did the books. He'd go back for another stack, ask Everett where the proper section was, then followed the directions given to that section. After he shelved the last book, Tristan looked back to see that there were no more books that needed to be put away aside from the ones he was instructed not to put away do to the damage that had been done to them rendering them unfit for the library to use.

xEverett's voice cut through the silence, slightly startling the brunette. He smiled when the older male said that Tristan could stay, but the fact there was nothing left to do was slightly depressing. "I don't suppose I'd get away with playing a video game, huh?" he asked with a light chuckle before he sighed. "I'll head to my second period class then. Thanks," he said, giving Everett a smile before he walked over to his backpack and opened it. He pulled out his schedule then noticed something in his backpack that he had forgotten. He pulled out a small bag of hard peppermint candies that his mother had kindly left in his backpack. The kid had somewhat of addiction to mint and it did keep him from being a nervous wreck from time to time. He reached into the back and pulled out two of them before he zipped the back up. He put the backpack on then walked over to the desk that Everett used. While the older male wasn't looking, Tristan placed the mints on time of the sheet that Everett used to check in the books. "Bye, Mr. Everett." Tristan waved before he got to the door and pushed it open, leaving the security of the library which he started to regret once outside the door.

Alec quietly walked into the library. His hands playing with a deck of cards. He walked up and down the lanes of stories. The room smelling of paper. "Well, they certainly wouldn't want me to be bored." He looked around, finding nothing of interest.
"Such a large library and nothing. Computer searching it is." He waked to a computer. His hands flipping through cards with out looking. He had done this many times. Years of card tricks will do this to you.

                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

Langston smiled gently at the other boy. "No, I'm afraid video games are outside even my limits," he told the boy. It wasn't that he minded video games personally, but personal electronics with no viable use in academics were banned during school hours at Princeton due to their tendency to cause distraction, no matter what precautions the owner might take. He watched as Tristan left the library, nodding in farewell, then returned the now-empty cart to the front desk. He'd been very helpful; Langston made a mental note to thank the boy again if he saw him, and perhaps offer to see about letting him help out more often in the library in exchange for spending one or two class periods there.

Now, what was it he'd planned to do after reshelving those books...? His gaze fell upon the list of required readings for classes. Ah yes. Setting out required texts for students. As he moved to pick up the list, however, he noticed something else out of place: two mints laying on top of the check-in sheet. Had Tristan left them there? Langston certainly didn't make much of a habit of carrying around candies himself. He scooped up the two mints, slipping them into his pocket with a small smile, then turned his attention back to the required reading list. There was already a small display table in front of the front desk he normally used for holding new arrivals; it would do nicely for this purpose as well.

He'd begun heading off towards the shelves to collect the needed books when another boy entered the library, this one blond and holding a deck of cards in his hands. It seemed the boy knew where he wanted to go (and if he were to be honest, it peeved Langston a little to hear him declare the library as containing nothing of interest), but he supposed he should at least make sure this wasn't yet another student trying to avoid classes.
"May I help you with anything?" he asked, striding over to the boy.

"did you find everything you need?"
                                                      where::the library
with::another student. where are all these coming from?

Alec turn on his heel as someone spoke to him from behind. He noticed the Librarian in a heart beat. "Do you have any books about card tricks? Or something like that." He asked, slipping the cards into his back pocket. He was surprised he had a free period. "I'm looking for something...challenging." He nodded, crossing his arms. He wanted to learn something new. Just being good with the slight of hand didn't mean he should get rusty.
He already could steal fifty bucks off the librarian with him knowing a thing. But he wouldn't risk it. Getting kicked out of this school would not only get him in trouble, but piss of his new parent. "If you find anything put it on hold for me, I need to get back to class!" He wrote his name on a note and slapped it on a desk before running out of the quiet area.

                  LANGSTON EVERETT
                                                                                the school librarian

Langston had hardly any chance at all to respond to the new boy's request before he was suddenly turning and running back out of the library. Energetic one, that was. Sighing, he picked up the card the boy had left behind and glanced at what written upon it. Alec Severan, hm? The boy had asked for card tricks, hadn't he? Langston had no idea what the boy might consider "challenging," so he simply wrote down a note to himself to check the appropriate section later and pull a decently ranged selection of books for the boy to look at later on the card and slipped it into his pocket alongside the two mints Tristan had left behind.

That done, he turned back to his original task. The library had several copies of the required readings available, since by their nature they tended to be in relatively high demand among those students who had forgotten or simply never bothered to obtain a copy of their own. He set them out on the display table, arranged by subject, then glanced up at the clock. Second period would be underway by now; there was little chance of being disturbed by another student coming in--or at least that was what he told himself, but he'd been proven wrong twice already today after all. He wondered if Tristan was settling into his class well.

Well, since he had time to spare he supposed he might as well pull some books about card tricks out for that boy who'd come in earlier. He set out a few, ranging from moderately-advanced to more expert tricks--the school library had a rather eclectic and well-rounded collection of books thanks to various donors over the years--and placed them on the front desk, along with the note bearing Alec's name, to which he added his own notes on where in the library the boy could find more books on the same subject if he wished.

Now then...he supposed he could afford to leave the library for a few minutes. At the very least, he'd like to get himself some coffee. He hung up a sign on the library door stating that he was out, then left the room, letting the library door swing closed behind him.

                                          [Exit Langston.]

"did you find everything you need?"
