Prompts

These prompts are based on the wonderful Kin Birth Signs created by user Owlied! While these signs follow similar paths to those astrological signs we are familiar with, they're also distinctly different. Please read up on them, if you're curious...!

  1. The Old Mountain (March 21 - April 20): There are seven stones standing in a wide, empty field.

  2. The Mangrove (April 21 - May 21): A sweet doe sings a song of lost love.

  3. The Twins (May 22 - June 21): The birds are out and curious despite the cold.

  4. The Three Horn (June 22 - July 22): A great lake in the heart of the swamp is frozen over -- except at its very center.

  5. The Hunter (July 23 - August 22): In the dream you turn and see no shadow behind you.

  6. The Familiar (August 23 - September 23): Something about today's crisp, cold air makes it difficult to stop talking.

  7. The Winged One (September 24 - October 23): Twelve stars form a constellation you've never seen before.

  8. The Web (October 24 - November 22): An unexpectedly warm day encourages new exploration.

  9. The Father Star (November 23 - December 21): Cooking a rejuvenating soup.

  10. The Trickster (December 22 - January 20): You tell a lie, but it's okay, because it was a funny lie.

  11. The Firefly (January 21 - February 19): Repeating the same line of a poem over and over, unsure how it ends.

  12. The Half-Bloom (February 20 - March 20): Work is too hard, better to just lie down and take a nap.

Reminders:

You can do each of these prompts once for raffle tickets/RP points, but you can do them as much as you want for character development RP.

You can only claim three RP points per kin from this event.

Kiss of Death ( 662 words )

Should I go to the right or to the left… Which one was it again? The doe stood still for a moment near the base of the mountain. She didn’t travel that far up but she could already see a path spiral around the cliffs to the right and a steep slope going up left side.

Kiss of Death stared down at her own hooves as she dug into the solid ground beneath her. Going up the steep slope seemed to take up a lot of effort. Her hooves barely left a mark at all. How long this old mountain had been here was yet another puzzle to be solved.

She looked up and gazed toward the spiral path that curled around the high mountain cliffs. This way… she spoke to herself in her mind. The life form she saw was no surprise to her. Growing amongst the shrubs was unwanted weed that dominated most of the path she was walking on.

It did not take long before she was already at the halfway mark. The air became crisper as she went higher up in altitude. She had to control her breathing to prevent getting discomfort in her ears. Without resting her body, she marched onward. Occasionally she would take quick stops to snack on a few plants to boost her energy level.

The clouds rolled on by as the wind quietly blew through the mountain, gently tugging onto the doe’s yellow locks of hair. She shook her head and kept on walking. Up ahead, she could see grey objects sticking out high above ground. The doe picked up her pace and walked into a wide empty field. Once there, she could see grey stones in a linear row.

Kiss of Death was taken aback. Was this a burial ground for the dead or did it have some sort of other meaning? She observed each one closely, as if looking for a sign. Each stone had different markings on them and it was undetermined whether it was done by other kin or through erosion.

As she investigated this unusual sight, the only thing that went through her mind were bones. She was obsessed with bones and the urge to dig overpowered her morality to leave the stones alone.

It was a tough decision for the doe as she walked back and forth between the seven stones to try and choose only one of the locations to try and dig for bones. She was certain that there were some sort of a skeletal remains buried in the ground and the stones represented place markers for the dead.
Without shame, she picked the one closest toward the mountain’s cliff, and began to dig. She jabbed her front hooves hard into the ground and clawed at the vegetation covering the brown the soil. Patches of compact soil flew through her hind legs as she dug faster and deeper into the ground. Her eyes never left the sight in front of her.

After a while of digging, the doe’s hoof hit something solid and she dug around it. Her breathing got heavy, and her curiosity grew. Is it a skull? Is it a legbone? With one last dig of her hoof, the object gave way and rolled out of its place and into the freshly dug soil.

Kiss of Death was disappointed to see that it was just a smooth rock. There were no bones to be found at all. She stepped back a few steps to look at the other grey stones. Digging around the rest of them was rather tempting, but she had used up all her energy in one location and had dug a small trench-like depression in the ground.

The doe was tired and laid down beside the soft soil while the stone shaded the sunlight. She closed her eyes and decided to sleep on it. What to do next will have to wait. Right now she is ready for a nap.

Kiss of Death ( 290 words )

Snow fell and melted on the doe's face as she stared at the center of the frozen lake. She thought she saw something bobbing in the water, almost as if it was trying to stay alive. She put a hoof onto the solid ice, and one by one, they all met with the thick sheet of ice’s cold surface.

She could not see clearly what was up ahead and decided to march forward with little baby steps. Each placement was carefully calculated to pretend the ice from cracking. She did not have a clue whether the sheet of ice would hold her weight since she had put up some weight for the winter to survive. And perhaps hibernate if she needed to.
All her focus went to the tips of her hooves. She had already slipped and fell a few times as she was not familiar with this new surrounding. Eventually she had made her way to the center.
The water current was still flowing strong as she looked down the hole. A few dark coloured fish darted quickly past the opening and hid below the ice’s surface.

Out of curiosity, she dipped a hoof into the water. Kiss of Death yelped out in pain as the cold temperature took her by surprise. It was nothing she had felt before. The coldness of the water felt as is her foot got torn off. She shook her leg to rid of any drops of water that cling onto her hide. It was not a pleasant feeling at all.

Lesson learned.

She turned around and carefully made her way back to dry land, and headed towards the warmth of the swamp, far away from the cold water and massive sheet of ice.
