Peep didn’t walk this path very often but the path was well worn. It meandered through the lands The Mothers Club called home and beyond, towards a small and quiet grove. The small Acha ambled along with fresh cut flowers spilling from her mouth. Cornflowers, daisies, those pretty red ones she had no name for. Just small gifts so that they knew they weren’t forgotten. Those who hadn’t made it. Young foals found too late. Those born without life. Peep had buried them in that small grove. Not many, but enough for sorrow.

It wasn't long before Death found a new clearing after strolling through the swamp digging her hooves into soft soil and muddy places to find something she is always looking for. Bones. Her face was caked with dirt but her sly smile never left. She spotted a hornless acha, rather small framed in size, who was dropping colourful flowers as she walked down a narrow path.

Ugh flowers. She disliked those the most. The smell that lingered in their presence, they made her nose cringe every time she came across those plants. Trampling on them always made her feel better afterwards and she enjoyed knowing that eventually, they will wither away. She watched the doe for a while to see what she was doing. Why was she by herself? It made no sense to her.

Death started to walk down the same path Peep just did and deliberately stepped onto the scattered flowers on the ground. The area was quiet and peaceful, but that didn't stop her. Naturally, she started to dig her hooves into a small mound of dirt that was overgrown with green vegetation. With a bulge like that, there's bound to be something buried underneath.

With all the flowers deposited along the path and in the clearing, Peep had begun to clear the area of twigs and leaves. She wasn’t aware that she even had company until she turned to find the doe pawing at the earth. She swallowed her instant sense of horror, rationalizing that this Kimeti surely couldn’t know what was underneath.

"Please don’t do that," she said firmly. “That's a grave."

She was certain that something was buried there deep down below but before she could find out on her own, the tiny acha interrupted her.

"A grave hmm?" she responded back and stopped digging. Death was not a hundred percent confident in knowing what a grave actually is. "Pardon. It was out of habit..." Quickly, with her right leg, she moved the soil back onto the pile she messed up. "Looking down at the little bumps on the ground, she could not help but ask out of curiosity. "Loved ones...?"

Peep gave a little breath of relief and offered a smile.

"Thank you." She regarded the grave with a soft, caring look. "Yes, I loved all of them."

The meti remained quiet as her eyes fixated on the little mounds. I wonder what happened to them. Giving the little graves a last little prod with her hoof, she turned to face the little tiny acha mother.

Kiss of Death subtly smiled back without trying to look like a carnivore scavenging for a morsel to eat. "Whatever happened to them... Didn't survive during birth?" Of course, she had never been around motherly does nor had she been a mother before to know how losing such darlings when they were wee small would feel like.

"Some of them," Peep answered. Now that the Kimeti had proven her innocence, the little Acha was full of warmth. She approached, not bothered by the toothy smile. "Some lives are shorter than others. We do our best but sometimes we don’t make it in time to save them or perhaps it was just never meant to be."

The swamp was a place of life and death. The alligators needed to eat too but there was nothing sadder than finding a nest of Acha eggs decimated by the scaled beasts.

The acha seems to have experience with this life and death stuff. Looking at the little mounds for the last time, she tried to resist the urge to dig through them, and laid her eyes on Peep again. "Tell me. What exactly are these flowers for?" Surely they were supposed to symbolize something but the meti had no idea what she is doing. All she knew at this moment is that there are tiny bodies buried underneath the earth. Their flesh probably rotten and eaten by tiny crawlies and decomposers.
