● ● ● ●XXᴛ ʜ ᴇ xx ᴄ ᴀ ʟ ᴀ ᴍ ɪ ᴛ ʏ[ The world of Avandere was one of magic; what its people referred to as 'the Skill'. It's cities were grand, with buildings made of Skillglass towering thousands of feet into the skies. The royal family governed, and the world was one of prosperity and happiness. The Magi Circle ruled over all, setting down strict laws that ensured the Skill would never be used with malicious intent, and that all men lived as equals.
However, ten years ago, a rift grew between the humans in the world blessed with the Skill, and those who were born without. Soon, even the Circle turned against the humans, seeing them as nothing more than meddling in the affairs of Mages. The Magi began thinking of humans as nothing more than lab rats, conducting unethical experiments on man, woman, and child alike.
Not long after, the humans took up arms against the Mages, and the Mage Wars began. An army of humans massed, and the Mages banned together and let loose such a powerful spell that it completely decimated the whole of the world, doing so much damage that it even blasted apart one of Avandere's two moons. The oceans swelled and flooded all but a single continent, killing off over eighty percent of the human population.
Now, mankind is left to its own devices, with almost all of the magic drained entirely from the world. Avandere has been thrown back to the medieval ages, with no comforts, and even less safety. However, there are many who still possess small amounts of Skill, but they are forced to hide it from almost all they meet, for fear of being killed.
The few surviving Mages stalk the city, searching for those with the Skill, as they know that if mankind rises up again, the Magi will certainly be targeted. Gangs roam the continent of Mavis, and they fight among one another for the precious few natural resources and sustenance left. Some of these hope to begin rebuilding the world, but that's a big task for the very few left.

● ● ● ●XXs ᴇ ᴛ ᴛ ɪ ɴ ɢxx & xx ᴅ ɪ s ᴛ ʀ ɪ ᴄ ᴛ s[ The story takes place in the city of Kireva, once home to the Circle of Magi and Royal Family. The lone known survivor was the Prince, who disappeared soon after the Calamity and no one knows his whereabouts. Two others have been rumored to have survived, but these whisperings have not been confirmed.
Culinary delicacies and rich, expensive fabrics have disappeared from the world, as well as comfortable dwellings and every social circle. The Skillglass towers have toppled, and food and drinkable water is scarce. Gangs have taken over the city, and Kireva has been divided into districts. ]
The Upper Circle::
Home to the Castle and manors of one-time nobles, this is the most coveted of the districts. Its houses are stocked with food and water, and only the toughest of gangs make it to the top. It has achieved an uneasy peace, and fights for territory are scarce here.
The Merchant Circle::
Shops and stalls once lined the streets, and while some remain, their contents are mostly worthless in today's society. This district is home to the majority of the gangs, and they're pretty well-off as far as supplies go. However, there's the occasional fight for territory here from gangs seeking better headquarters.
The Red Circle::
Named for the blood that constantly lines its streets, this district is home to the lowest and most violent of gangs. Supplies are scarce, and raids between gangs happen almost daily. Most of the people here wish to move up into better districts, but openings in the more sophisticated gangs are scarce.

The Gangs are not typical of those in today's society; rather, they are more of a brotherhood, with very tight bonds as its members try to eke out a survival in this new, harsh world. While fights between gangs are common, the only weapons to be found are blades, bows, poisons, very antique firearms, and one's own wit. ]XXXXᴜ ᴘ ᴘ ᴇ ʀ _ ᴄ ɪ ʀ ᴄ ʟ ᴇ ::●●●●xxxThe Black Serpents xxx|xxxAʟᴛᴀɪs Mᴀʟ'ʙᴀɪɴ
[ [ The Black Serpents were formed seven years after the Calamity by the Forgotten Prince, Altais Mal'bain. They worked hard to rise up the ranks, beginning, like all others, in the Red Circle. Now, they are one of the most well-off Gangs in Mavis, having found a manor to occupy in the Upper Circle. In the first year, the Serpents found many members, bringing the Gang's total count up to twenty three, but a Rogue Mage found out Altais' identity and blasted the Gang Headquarters apart, killing all inside.
However, Altais had been out walking the streets of the city that night, and was spared from a fiery death. After returning to the decimated hovel he once called home, the Prince scoured the streets of Kireva and found the Mage. A fierce battle ensued, and Altais came out the victor, though he barely escaped with his life.
Now, Altais is very selective about who he allows to join; anyone he deems 'weak' will not pass muster. The Serpents are well-known for launching unexpected attacks for territory, but they are clever and cunning in their tactics. Countless lesser Gangs fear not only the Serpents, but their leader as well, as the Serpents are one of the few who have someone able to use the Spirit Branch in their ranks. Even though they're known to fight for what's theirs -- and what's not -- the Serpents have made quite a few friends; they barter weekly with those in the Merchant Circle, and have occasionally helped out Gangs in the lower Circles when they were in dire straits.
Altais hopes to one day unite the Gangs roaming Kireva and launch an attack on the remaining Mages in hopes of returning the continent of Mavis to its former glory, but he knows that right now, tensions are far too high to form lasting alliances. So even though the Elements may be harnessed, Skilled can not call forth earthquakes or lightning storms or any sort of high-powered destructive force any longer!● If you have any questions regarding Skill Branches, such as if a certain spell / power is viable, what power falls under which Branch, or anything else, please PM or IM King Azreth. We'll talk one on one to determine what sorts of powers your OC can have, and which Branch is best suited to them.XXXXSpirit::[ [ Spirit users harness pure, raw Skill to do their bidding. People who can use Spirit Skills are exceptionally rare, and therefore not much is known about this Element. To date, only the remnants of the Royal Family has been known to be able to control Spirit Skills. While there are some exceptions, they rarely, if ever, happen.] ]XXXXEarth::[ [ Earth users can call harness sand, dirt, and nature itself. This Branch is very steadfast and reliable. However, as all Branches, Earth wielders have far less power now than they did a decade past.] ]XXXXFire::[ [ Fire users can call forth flame to do their bidding. This Skill is especially useful for purifying water and cooking foods. The Branch is rather volatile though, especially since much of the magick from Avandere was drained. Accidents and injuries to the user have been known to happen. ] ]XXXXWater::[ [ Skill users who harness Water are coveted because of how scarce the resource is. However, unless there is clean water nearby, the user cannot call forth this Element. Either Salt or Fresh water can be manipulated.] ]XXXXAir::[ [ Air users aren't very common after the Calamity, but they can bend the winds to their will. This is also the element of Healing. However, it takes ten times as much Skill to knit bones and repair flesh than it did ten years ago. ] ]XXXXLightning::[ [ While Lightning users used to be able to call forth lightning storms, now the most they are able to do is harness light to medium electricity. While this is definitely handy for both protection and quality of life, most prefer to go with a stronger element due to the myriad of dangers they may face. ] ]XXXXDark::[ [ While ten years ago, Dark wielders could black out the light of the sun, call forth Demons from the Ninth Circle, and wreak all-out havoc, their Skill has declined considerably. They can still preform Summonings, but the highest level Demon they can call are ones from the Fourth Circle. They can still manipulate and bend shadows, and they can also suck all light from a set radius for a specific amount of time, however. They can also scry and are very perceptive in reading dreams and tarot cards.] ]XXXXBlood::[ [ Those who use the darkest of Skills are those who use the Blood Branch. Blood Skills used to have nigh-unlimited power a decade past, but these days it's far more limited. This is a very malignant Skill, and is almost always used for nefarious purposes. However, it takes a certain type of person to use it, and as such, it's very rare. Blood users can bend others to their will in special circumstances, and they can, like Dark users, call forth Minor Demons. ] ]
