6. Shooting Star

The sky above him was dark, save for the hundreds of stars. The moon was not out today. As Longclaw gazed up, he marveled at how far he'd come in life. If, all those years ago, someone had told that little colt that he would come out to the Western frontiers and lead a tribe, of all things, he might have laughed.

But here he was, a solitary creature in a very not solitary life. All around him his family slept. Not just his blood, but the family of his own choosing. The children of Westfen had grown up. And they had grown strong. They'd proved it last year at the Battle of the Tribes, and they proved it again and again every day of their lives. Their numbers were not yet as numerous as the stars, but Longclaw imagined that one day they would be. He was proud. He was content.

A shooting star streaked across the sky and Longclaw wondered if his daughter could see the same sight.

1. Time

He was a colt again, clawing at the dirt. His mentor, strict and fierce Precipice, was watching him and he felt her gaze keenly. He was battered, bruised, bleeding. Days and days of fighting, hunting, tracking, training, whatever it was that Precipice had thrown at him, had worn through his youthly stamina. He was sore beyond belief, and certainly beyond words. But Longclaw did not utter a sound. He neither complained nor whined. Even when he'd collapsed, the only sound his mentor heard was teh splat of mud. The mud seeped around him, cool against his feverish skin. It felt so nice, so soothing. But he would not stay. He could not. Even without his mentor's gaze, without her silent words get up, he would not have stayed there.

No. Longclaw did not, would not, ever lie down and accept defeat.

He pushed himself to his hooves and stood up. Precipice smiled. It was the closest thing to pride she'd ever shown him.

18. Waterfall

Water rushed down on him. It pounded against his skull. He tried to open his eyes, but the sting of water forced them shut again. All around him he heard the sound of water, he felt it flowing past him with such force it seemed to pull the fur from his back. He kicked and tried to surface, but it was not enough.

The current dragged Longclaw down, deeper, deeper into a dark abyss. It pulled him so deep the thundering of the waterfall faded to nothing. He opened his eyes. All around him was blue water, dark with depth. A cool current pulled past his legs, and when he looked up, the glimmer of the sun was barely visible. He looked back down and was startled when two glowing eyes stared back at him. A great mass moved in the water, and Longclaw felt afraid. He did not show it, but he felt it in his heart. Fear of the unknown, of the strange and mysterious. The eyes stared back at him, unblinking.

Longclaw woke with a start. Above him the sky was clear and the stars, bright. For some reason, they reminded him of the eyes in the deep.
