There had been quite a few reports as of late of increased activity within the haunted house. So, naturally, there had been an increase in the number of investigative runs through the unpredictable old building. It had been a while since Peyton had been assigned to it, though she certainly wasn't complaining. As a Sun, front line combat was her duty. As a person, fighting was what she seemed to live and breath for. It was freeing, intoxicating. So she had gone into her mission for the day with high spirits.

Dressed in a pair of her usual cut off shorts, hair drawn up in a pair of bright panda buns, the girl certainly didn't look half as dangerous as she truly was. Not with her short stature and dainty build, but she was incredibly fast, and ruthlessly vicious.

Twin daggers in hand, the petite Hunter started her patrol with careful, quiet steps through the decaying halls, eyes and ears open to any hint of a stirring in the rooms she passed or up ahead.

<You're eager to run into something.> Warrick's voice carried amusement.

Aren't I always?

<True, though you seem especially geared up today.>

Pey gave a sharp sniff, chuckling quietly under her breath. Maybe. It has been a while since I've had a chance to really let loose. Her lips twitched. I have to be so careful around the trainees.

<But not here.>

No, not here.

ALL PLAYERS AT ANY POINT CAN FORFEIT THEIR ATTACK TO ROLL 2d12. If you roll odd, you do this damage to your opponent. If you roll even, you do this damage to YOURSELF - no modifier, you can ONLY DO THIS ONCE. You feel an uneasy unsettling feeling, as if something is coming, but you can't place what or when.

He had been hanging around Amityville too much. It was the only explanation West could come up with for why he had been minding his own business one minute and in front of this stupid ******** House the next. He hated this place. He hated hunters and all the weird vendettas they had against him when he hadn't done s**t. He hated that they had the power to reduce a living, breathing creature of FEAR to a mindless stick.

That was the root of it, really. They made him uneasy, and no matter how many whispers he heard that they could only do that to those who went willingly, he knew better. He had seen otherwise.

he shouted. The House didn't reply.

Summoning his wings, he propelled himself forward with a single flap, desummoned them as he threw open the front door and barged inside, then resummoned them once he was in the hall.

Peyton paused, head turning slightly to that side.

Did you hear that? She thought she'd heard...

<Hear what?>

Maybe it was nothing. Exhaling sharply through her nose, the dainty Sun continued on her way, booted feet making next to no noise as she crept along the dim hallway. Not for stealth, but to listen. If there was anything else in the house, she wanted to find it. Where was the fun if she didn't get to fight something.

Something banged deeper in the house, like doors being thrown open, and a wicked little smile twisted the hunters lips, fingers tightening on the handles of her daggers. "It's about damn time." God, she just wanted to hit something! Warrick gave an amused rumble at the back of her mind, eagerness radiating from the wrath demon as Peyton threw herself around the next corner, rushing to meet whatever the source of the noise might have been.

<Demon.> Warrick provided, deep voice dipping into a growl.

Her daggers were up as she slid to a stop on the dust covered floor, grinning brightly at the tall beasty at the other end of the hall. "Hello there."

As the figure slid into view at the end of the hall, West narrowed his eyes and stared her down. His hands curled into involuntary fists as he measured the distance between them and attempted to gauge how to land the first hit from here. He pulled FEAR into his fingers, intending to punch the ghoul off of her feet whether friend or foe, but something went wrong. West grit his teeth as his power was reabsorbed into his chest, a dim red glow the only indication that he had done anything at all.

He coughed.

"Hey."

A moment was taken to judge her opponent. Tall and lean with evidence of muscles cording though what she could see of his arms. Large hands, evidence of old injuries spotted here and there on tanned skin. The glow drew her gaze, held it, but when nothing happened she flicked those pale eyes up to his face once more, smile growing.

Very little in the way of warning proceeded the charge. The turn of one foot, seeking purchase on the dirty floor, then she was sprinting for him, very nearly a pink and blonde blur before the red glow of her dagger's runes flashed between them as she took and upward slash across his chest.

Warrick drank in the Fear, rumbling his approval for all of a second before going silent.

<He tastes familiar.> The words were a growl, low and dangerous, and strange enough to pull the small Sun back as she sent a questioning thought in his direction.

<Wrath demon,> he clarified, no less agitated. Peyton could feel him bristling through her mind, and her eyes widened a touch with the revelation. It had her taking a second, longer look at the demon she faced off against, comparing the figure before her with the flashes of features she saw of her partner behind her eyes. It was eerie.

"This is rare treat. I wonder how often our partners get to meet members of their former species." Her head cocked to the side, smile returning. "I wonder which will be stronger."

If he'd thought her tiny from afar, it was nothing compared to her actual size. She was quicker than he would have expected too. And most definitely a hunter. West tried to block her strike, but his hand met nothing but air. He grunted derisively, flapping forward to send a sharp gust of wind her way.

"Rare treat, my a**," he grumbled. The demon sucked in a breath to speak, but whatever thoughtless insults he'd been readying died in his throat at her next declaration. That thing. Her partner. It had been a...

He might have doubted her. Maybe it was her job to come in here with some textbook knowledge of Halloween species and claim that her weapon was one of whatever she came across, but her genuine curiosity indicated otherwise. Plus, the dagger looked... wrathy. Perhaps more elegant than the club he knew he'd become, it was still made for close combat and grievous injury.

His fingers tingled with nerves, but he stared her down, replying after only the briefest hesitation. "If I lose a fight t'that piece a's**t, it's only 'cause of this place an' the s**t it pulls." He glared at the weapon. "Tell her t'put y'down an' we'll see who wins a race back down the hall, Stumpy."

The blast of wind from his wings sent her stumbling back against the wall, light as she was. But it wouldn't slow her down, not in the least. She was stalking forward again before the dust had a chance to settle. Smile returning in a slow curl along her lips. "Making excuses already? Not very confident, are we?" It came out mockingly sweet.

<Stumpy?> Warrick laughed, deep and rumbling, and Peyton echoed him.

Bringing one hand up, she pointed the curved tip of a blade at him, grinning viciously. "Warrick wouldn't lose to the likes of you."

And with that she charged forward again, nibble little frame skipping around one of his arms to cut a quick slice over the back of his shoulder. Not a solid hit, but enough to give her weapon another taste of that familiar Fear. He hummed his approval as she turned on her heel, daggers coming up defensively.

"They're not excuses." If you couldn't admit you weren't going to be in top fighting form while you were slogging through a waist-high pile of psychedelic entrails, you were either an idiot or a p***k. This House was a waist-high pile of psychedelic entrails. "I'm jus' not an idiot," he muttered to himself. The p***k part was debatable.

He turned to follow her movements, an exasperated grunt escaping him as she struck again. "Stop dartin' around!" West tucked a wing in close and jabbed his elbow back at her as hard as he could, hoping to catch her before she sped away again.

She gave an amused snort. "They sound like excuses." Words to fall back on when you failed, to soften the blow of defeat. It wasn't as if she didn't make her own from time to time, though Peyton preferred to learn from her beatings, rather than explain them away.

of course, her opinion on the matter was rather lofty.

Out of reach of his fists, but not his wings. The heavy limb hit her low across the chest and sent her smacking against the closest wall with a sharp gasp. A startling hit, but one she recovered from all too quickly, laughing as she got her feet back beneath her properly. "Are you asking me to take it easier on you?" He wasn't, but she'd dig and twist as easily with her words as she did with her blades. "Warrick's beside himself."

Darting forward again, she ducked under one of his long arms to sneak in close to his body. Both daggers came up at the same time, curved blades licking up along his stomach and chest and she raised her arms.

"Yeah. Fine. I guess they do sound like that. So, no. I'm not askin' you t'do any less than try t'murder me like you bastards always—"

The choked sound of surprise he made when she so casually uttered his surname could have easily been a reaction to her attack, but it wasn't. His brain ran through a million reasons why she might have said it, from the secret researcher angle to a random coincidence, but none of them felt right. Her tone had been affectionate, which most likely meant she was speaking of that thing, and she had said it was a wrath demon too. It was too much. He spun more quickly than he ever could when he meant to, fingers glowing with ineffectual, blunt claws as he lunged for her, hoping to eviscerate her, rip away her mocking grin, or at the very least pin her to the wall.

"What did you say? What kinda s**t are you tryin' to pull?" He should have played it cool, but his angry bellows broadcast with undeniable certainty that something was very wrong.

There was a second in which Peyton had the time to raise a curious brow before the demon was rounding on her. A quick swipe with a dagger kept the initial slash from cutting across her stomach, but something had certainly struck a nerve, because even her speed wasn't enough to keep him from getting an arm beneath her neck and shoving her roughly against the wall, pinning her there. Temporarily.

Of course, despite the seemingly precarious, the petite hunter was smiling.. An almost vicious curl of glossed lips, lavender eyes bright and shining, though half lidded--almost casual. "What part?" She purred, teeth flashing in a grin.

Legs curling up, she aimed her heels at his knees, though her aim was a little spotty.

He let his fist fly again as punishment for her smugness, her speed, her... stupid face, backing out of range soon after.

"The name."

Something deep inside him wondered why he bothered.

"Yer wrath demon's called Warrick." It was a question with none of the inflection. West knew the answer and could only assume it meant the worst. Not only that, it meant he had been lied to. Slow, blazing rage crept through him, smothering his initial panicked apprehension. It nearly burned him away too.

"You people're assholes." Nearly. "Traitors an' selfish pieces a's**t."

He was made of stronger stuff than that.

The blow rocked her head back against the wall, sent a quick flash of stars before her eyes, but the smile remained. Smug as ever. It wasn't quite overconfidence, but certainly the girl was strong enough for it. It was the battle itself, it was facing off against an opponent that presented a challenge. This was the sort of s**t Peyton lived for!

She grinned at him, more a baring of teeth than anything else, and when she spoke her voice was a dangerous purr. "What about the name?" Warrick was urging her to use her charge, but she held off, for now.

"Does it mean something to you?" Taunting him might not have been wise, but she couldn't seem to stop herself. "Is it familiar to you?"

He still had her pinned, but she had her legs free. Drawing up her legs, she aimed a sharp kick at one of his knees.

He despised what she was saying, so much so that it burned away his apprehension and disappointment at a smolder and made his eyes blaze with fury rather than fear. He'd kill her. He'd kill them both.

Stepping back just a fraction following her well-aimed kick, he snarled, "You'd love that. If I'd known yer stupid weapon an' I broke down an' cried over it. But I dunno anyone who'd be dumb enough to give up this..." He drew up taller, wings spreading wide as he preened. "So maybe I have met some Warricks, but all that means is one of the ones I don't know was dumb enough t'get mixed up with hum—"

He had meant to give the weapon a derisive flick, but as soon as his fingers were an inch away from its runes, he knew it had been a mistake to try. It was too late to abort the movement, and as he touched this other Warrick, pain lanced up his arm to the elbow. His outward reaction was minimal, much as it had been when his FEAR had misfired, but his wings did disappear with a faint pull of the air around them, creating a brief sensation in the inner ear not unlike ascending in an elevator.

"Why d'you even care?" he growled. "We gonna exchange friendship bracelets?"

the wings were impressive, she'd give the demon that, but they were just wings. A bunch of feathers didn't give you power--flight, sure, but not power. Of course if he'd been expecting an 'oh and ah' from the tin hunter, he wouldn't get it. Of the two of them, Warrick seemed for more interested in the sudden expanded wingspan, but his was more a curiosity than anything else.

And then he did something stupid. The demon reached out, fingertips intent on flicking against the metal of one blade, and when he touched it she heard her partner howl in obvious fury. The wings vanished, with soundless pop of her ears, and despite how terribly well he had managed to not let just how painful it had been show on his face, she knew it had hurt the demon still pinning her to the wall. Peyton grinned, slow and satisfied.

"No. Just curious. Never met another of what he is."

<Let me tear into him. Show him what I gave up wings for.> He snarled, roiling through her mind like a storm ready to tear open the sky.

Her smile grew. "Do you want to see power?" She wouldn't wait for an answer. The runes on her daggers flared bright, and before the demon could so much as blink she was drawing her legs up tight to her chest and driving her heels into his to kick him away from her.

The second she landed she was kicking off from the wall, sprinting at him in a blur of pink and blonde and red light. Whens he struck she struck hard, over and over again without relent. His chest, his arms, his hips and thighs. Again and a again until the Fear began to recede, and finally she ended the barrage with an uppercut slash across his chin and cheek.
