Potions (Latin potio, 'beverage') are magical mixtures commonly brewed in cauldrons and used to create a number of effects on the drinker. Potions range in effects and nature and in difficulty as well. Potions are brewed from ingredients with magical properties. Potions can be used as medicine, lethal poison, or give the drinker any effect from strength enhancement to immunity to flames. Potions are not necessarily used by drinking, as some can be applied by physical contact or create an effect simply by being created. Potions is a core class and subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this class, students learn the correct way to brew potions. They follow specific recipes and use various magical ingredients to create the potions, starting with simple ones and moving to more advanced ones as they progress in knowledge.

The Potions Classroom is located in one of the large dungeons in Hogwarts Castle. It is large enough to allow at least twenty students to work. In one corner of the room stands a basin into which ice-cold water pours from a gargoyle's mouth, while in another is a student supply cupboard. There is also a blackboard on which the Potions master can write the class's instructions. Years four through seven are taught by Adalaide Whitethorne. The dungeon is typically known for being exceptionally cold, but Professor Whitethorne attempts to keep it a bit cozier than some of her predecessors through charms. Likewise, the typically glum classroom has been redecorated, with floating candles for light and to give the place a warmer feel to it, and various splashes of warm colors here and there through the use of tapestries and knick knacks.

× Lesson One × Everlasting Elixirs
What Is It?: × Potions which have been charmed to either never run out, or for their effect to never wear off. × The effect is produced by using a particular spell on an already-brewed potion. × Poorly cast longevity spells can cause the effect of a potion to be either weakened, or strengthened, sometimes to a dangerous degree. × If casting for a never-ending supply, it can cause the potion to replenish non-stop rather than when it reaches a certain volume, making it overflow continuously, if done incorrectly, resulting in dangerous spills. × The spell will only be successful on certain potions; the more complex the potion, the less likely it is to work. Skillful casters can manage it on all but the most difficult potions.
The Spell: × Incantation - Aeternum (Ay-TERN-um) × Movement - Tap your wand twice on the cauldron and then make a circle above the potion.
Instructions: × Practice saying the incantation until you're sure you've gotten it right. × Separately, practice the wand motion repeatedly until you're sure you've gotten it right. × There are two Boil-Cure potions on your desk. Once you are comfortable, attempt the spell on both potions. × Bottle a sample of each potion, label them "Attempt 1" and "Attempt 2" along with your name and house, then turn them in to Professor Whitethorne.
Homework: Come visit Professor Whitethrone to attempt the spell on a more complex potion.
× Lesson Two × Draught of Peace
Ingredients: × Standard Potion Base × Powdered Moonstone × Hellebore Syrup × Porcupine Quills × Powdered Unicorn Horn
Materials: × Cauldron × Mortar and Pestle × Measuring Cups
Instructions: × Add powdered moonstone to standard potion base until the potion turns green. × Stir until the potion turns blue. × Add powdered moonstone until the potion turns purple. × Allow to simmer until potion turns pink. × Slowly stir in hellebore syrup until the potion turns turquoise. × Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple; while simmering, grind up 2 measures of porcupine quills with the mortar and pestle. × Shake powdered porcupine vigorously; add to potion until it turns red. × Stir until the potion turns orange. × Add more powdered porcupine quills until potion turns turquoise. × Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple. × Add powdered unicorn horn until the potion turns pink. × Stir until the potion turns red. × Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple. × Add more moonstone until the potion turns grey. × Allow to simmer until the potion turns orange. × Add more powdered porcupine quill, until the potion turns white.
Homework: Select an ingredient in the Draught of Peace and write an essay speculating on its purpose.
× Lesson Three × Strengthening Solution
Ingredients: × Standard Potion Base × Standard Potion Ingredient × Salamander Blood × Griffin Claws × Exploding Fluid

Homework: Select an ingredient in the Strengthening Solution and write an essay speculating on its purpose.
× Lesson Four × Love Potion Antidote
Ingredients: × Standard Potion Base × Castor Oil × Gurdyroot Extract × Wiggentree Twigs
Materials: × Cauldron × Dropper × Measuring Cups
Instructions: × Add four Wiggentree twigs, or until the potion turns green. × Stir until the potion turns orange. × Add castor oil until the potion turns blue. × Stir until the potion turns purple. × Add extract of Gurdyroot until the potion turns red. × Add Wiggentree twigs. × Add Extract of Gurdyroot until the potion turns purple. × Leave the potion to simmer till it turns red. × Add more gurdyroot extract till it turns green. × Stir till it turns orange. × Add seven Wiggentree twigs. × Allow to simmer till it turns pink.
Homework: Select an ingredient in the Love Potion Antidote and write an essay speculating on its purpose.

spaceAdalaide was slightly less nervous for this lesson than she had been Monday night, if only because she reasoned that her first lesson hadn't gone horribly. No major catastrophes, that was good. She figured that after she had the first week under her belt, she'd be a lot more confident. Of course, the worry over being discovered increased ever so slightly with each year, since she could only assume that, the older they were, the more observant they would be. But it wasn't as though she had a flask of blood in her desk. No, just an assortment of blood pops, which could easily be thought to be cherry or some other red-colored flavor. Incidentally, she had an assortment of other flavors as well, in case anyone said something about it. Thankfully, she could differentiate between the actually-cherry flavored ones by scent easily enough.
spaceThe blonde smoothed her skirt as she stood to start the lesson, hoping she'd make a good first impression. If the students liked her, rumors were much less likely to fly."Evening, everyone! I'm Professor Adalaide Whitethorne. I assume you all know one another well enough by now, so I won't bother with any sort of lengthy introductions or anything like that. If everyone could just stand up, give me your name and house, we'll be done with it."She hoped she could keep the names straight, but reasoned that it shouldn't be overly difficult if she paid close attention."I'd also like to request that, just for these first couple of weeks, if you could try to keep in the same seats, since it'll make it easier for me to associate names with faces."
spaceOnce the introductions were out of the way, she waved her wand, and a set of instructions appeared on the board."Today, we'll not be brewing any potions. Instead, we're going to learn about Everlasting Elixirs. These are potions which have been charmed to either never run out, or for their effect to never wear off. We'll be learning about the spell to achieve this effect. I'm going to demonstrate the proper technique a couple of times, and instructions are on the board for you all to copy down and keep for future reference."She retrieved her wand from it's place sticking out of her bun, and stepped behind her desk. On it, a cauldron sat, filled with a simple boil-cure."You each have a couple of small cauldrons filled with a Boil-Cure Potion on your desk. You'll be using these to practice. I want you to be very sure that you have the pronunciation and motion down properly before actually attempting the spell, as consequences of an improperly cast charm can be dangerous. The incantation is as follows: 'Ay-TERN-um.' Say it a few times to ensure that you're pronouncing it correctly. Once you have that down, you'll move on to the wand movement. Tap the cauldron twice, then make a circle above it. When you're comfortable, attempt the spell on the two potions on your desk, bottle a portion of each, and label them with your house, name, year, and Attempt One or Two."Adalaide hoped she'd been clear in her instructions with this. She wasn't bad at charms, not by a long shot, but she was infinitely better at instructions for potions. But, she supposed that she'd find out soon enough. Hopefully, nobody made any crucial mistakes. Thankfully, the potions were just boil-cures. There wasn't much that could go wrong if the students were overzealous with their attempts.

Lesson 1 : Everlasting Elixers
Spell Information:
• Name of the spell - Aeternum • Pronunciation of the spell - Ay-TERN-um • Meaning behind the name - forever, always, eternally, for ever, also, perpetually • Effects of the spell - It casts an enchantment that causes potions to last longer than their intended duration ie: Everlasting Elixers. • Wand movements required to preform properly - Tapping your wand twice on the cauldron and then make a circle above the potion. • History behind the spell - It was made by an irate witch that hated it when she had to take a potion several times a day for pain. Unfortunately, the spell worked so well, that while she succeeded in making the potion last indefinitely, it had the unfortunate effect of making her numb to all pain and caused her death a year later since she didn't feel it when she got whalloped by a Whomping Willow. However, the spell has been refined since, leading to more controlled effects of long-lasting potions. • Is there a distance requirement? - You have to be in close proximity to the potion for it to work. • Are the effects lasting? - It is just as the spell description suggests. • Anything else? - It is a very tricky spell, requiring exceptional concentration since a miscast can have serious, even deadly consequences.

Location: Potions - Thursday @ 11:00pm
It was his last class of the day and it was a long day at that. Dakota was tired but he couldn’t let the lateness of the class ruin his grade. He wasn’t overly good at potions although he could manage in Alchemy for some reason. At least he wasn’t the type to blow things up when making potions. Sitting at the front like he always did, the Ravenclaw was surprised to see a new professor. Perhaps it was getting to be too much on Professor Forrest and they brought her to help. As she introduced herself Dakota smiled. When she asked for an introduction he stood when it was his turn. “Evening Professor Whitethorne. I’m Dakota Vann most call me Kota. I’m a member of Ravenclaw.” He greeted her brightly before sitting back down.
Once the introductions were over Dakota looked to the board as the instruction appeared. Opening his books, he pulled out his quill and ink before taking the detailed notes on the Everlasting Elixirs that was on the board. He was secretly glad they’d just be taking notes today and doing a spell or two. Looking up as Professor Whitethorne demonstrated, Dakota repeated the incantation after her in his head. When she showed the wand movement it seemed simple. Just the pronunciation was the challenging part it seemed. After being left to it, the white haired boy went to practicing the incantation. “Ay-TERN-um… Ay-TERN-um…” He spoke carefully before taking his wand in hand.
“Aeternum.” Dakota said before tapping the cauldron in front of him twice and making a circle above it. Doing the same thing to the other potion he bottled both potions before labeling them. ‘Dakota Vann, Ravenclaw Fifth Year’ He wrote before handing in his bottle. Clearly he hadn’t completely failed at doing it although he didn’t know if it was actually everlasting.

Pru was generally not very good with Potions, but she liked the new professor almost immediately. Plus, they were not in fact reviewing. "Pru Lowery, Gryffindor," she said pleasantly, before sitting down back in her seat beside Dakota. He was dating the girl she considered her best friend, after all. "Ay-TERN-um," she pronounced it carefully, and had to try a good few times to finally get it cast, but was relieved when she finally did so. Nothing like embarrassing yourself in front of the new professor, after all.

"Louie Addario, Slytherin," the blond head of the slouched Slytherin perked up for just that moment to announce himself, and then his head was right back down on the desk. Why was it so blasted late, anyway? At least it was warm, the floating candles and thick tapestries lining the cold dungeon walls had seen fit to insulate the classroom. If only he could wrap himself up in one of those blankets, it might've made this class worth it. A greedy little part of him wondered if anyone would even say anything, if he ripped one off the wall and curled up like a bug. But Louis wasn't stupid. Not that stupid, anyway. After a sigh and huff, Louie straightened his posture, maybe that would help him pay attention and focus. Calloused fingers fished for his smoking hazel wand and watched as the tear shaped tufts of smoke evaporated overhead. Annoyed, he flicked his wand back and forth to get its attention away from the underground lake. Honestly, it was wicked the first year of potions but now it was just getting tedious. ”Ay-TERN-um,” he said, clearing his throat. ”Ay-TERN-um. Ay-TERN-um...” he repeated. Once he felt comfortable, he practiced the incantation, tapped, and guided the tip of his wand in a full circle before repeating the process on the second potion then bottled and labeled his handiwork.

spaceAdalaide was feeling much more confident this week, which she supposed only made sense. She'd met all her students, at least recognized most of their faces, knew a couple of names. More to the point, she didn't think she'd aroused any suspicion thus far, which was good. Once everyone was seated, the blonde stood and circled around to stand in front of her desk, leaning back on it, a hand resting on the surface to support her. The other reached to her bun and pulled her wand out, giving it a flick to write the day's instructions on the board.
space"Welcome back, everyone. Today, you'll be learning about and brewing what is known as the Draught of Peace. The potion is used to relieve anxiety and agitation, and is very popular for helping among those who suffer from anxiety attacks. Historically, it has had many uses. It's been used to calm victims of attacks so that they may more effectively explain what happened to them, to help people learn to cope with traumatic events..."The Hufflepuff smirked faintly."It has even, at this very school, been used to help students overcome stress regarding their upcoming exams,"she chirped, somewhat amused by this. Her expression turned serious again, however, fingers tapping on the desktop behind her."However, like anything used to relieve suffering, it can be dangerous; some people become reliant on potions of this nature, and abuse them to remain calm in situations where they would rather take the easy solution than actually cope with their anxiety. With potions like this, it is always best used sparingly, only in situations where it is absolutely necessary."She paused, pursing her lips, then continued on with the actual lesson, figuring there was no need to harp on the subject of the dangers of potions."The potion itself can be quite complicated, so don't worry too much if you find yourself unsure of what you're doing. If you have any questions or trouble, feel free to ask for help, either from myself or a classmate. When the potion is complete, it should be a white in color. You may collect your supplies from the cupboard and begin."She watched the students prepare to begin brewing, and moved to sit at her desk. Hopefully, nothing exploded... that did tend to happen in Potions classes on occasion.

spaceAdalaide watched as her fifth years entered the classroom, seated behind the desk, what appeared to be a cherry lollipop in her mouth. On the desk, to lessen any suspicion concerning the 'treat', she had a jar of similar looking lollipops, of various flavors, with a small sign indicating that, should they be inclined, students were free to take one. It served a dual purpose; making her own seem less notable, and hopefully endearing herself to the students. She knew that she'd made a fairly good impression last year, at least, but she'd like to keep it up. She wanted her students to like her, after all.

Getting to the last class of her day, Grace brought a tea with her to class. She hoped that it would keep her awake and she wasn’t the biggest fan of coffee. Taking a seat she felt like she could stay away for it hopefully. Taking a seat as soon as she got to the classroom she was glad that it didn’t feel like being in the dungeon, even if that’s where the class was located. Taking out her things she was ready for class.
The moment Professor Whitethorne began talking Grace looked up at her with a bright smile. Looking to the board she began taking notes about the spell. It was important she got it right. After watching and listening, the Ravenclaw went to work figuring it out for herself. “Ay-TERN-um… Ay-TERN-um… Aeternum.” She pronounced over and over to herself before practicing the two taps and a circle. The movement wasn’t so hard. It was getting both down together. “Aeternum.” She said giving cauldron one a tap before making a circle over it. It sounded right… it looked right… must be done right… right…? Trying it again just to make sure, Grace then put both in their own vials. ‘Grace Mitchell, Ravenclaw 5th year, Attempt One.’ She wrote on the first before writing on the second, ‘Grace Mitchell, Ravenclaw 5th year, Attempt Two.’ Walking both up to Professor Whitethorne’s desk she smiled.

Vio was horrible with potions, so she was relieved when they wouldn't actually be brewing anything today. Charms were something she had always done well with. It didn't taker her long to master the charm, and she expected that for once she'd be getting a good grade on a non-writing assignment in this class, as she turned in her bottles.

Selina could have done without two late night classes in a week, but that was how things were, with Potions on Thursday night into Friday morning, and Astronomy the next night. It was likely a good thing she had Art first thing in the morning, rather than some of her other classes, as she could ease into her Friday a bit, even if she did need a mug of her special blend of coffee to get going. Still, her habit of taking a nap after dinner ensured she was awake enough to get through Potions without dozing off; and a good thing too, since the stuff she worked on could have disastrous consequences if she flubbed a step or two due to drowsiness.
It was a good thing Professor Whitethorne was rather personable, as it made the evening class much more pleasant than it might otherwise be. Heck, she even kept a jar of sweets on her desk for students whom might need the extra shot of sugar to keep them going. None of the teachers at her old school would do that, unless it was for their favourites, and even then on rare occasions.
And she wasn't kidding about the dangers of potions, considering much of the ingredients going into the Draught of Peace were toxic in and of themselves. One mistake, and the imbiber would be resting in peace, instead of being somewhat tranquilized. It was also a difficult potion to create, which was saying something in Selina's book, as there were several steps which were too easy to mis-remember, considering how many of them required of to add powdered moonstone or porcupine quills.
There were a couple times Selina caught herself losing track of which step she was on, even though she used her usual technique of having her stages pre-measured and ready to avoid such issues. 'More tired than I thought,' she thought sheepishly, as she managed to get back on track before making a misstep which would have required of her to destroy the work she'd already done and start over. Selina was quite happy when her final potion was a pure white when she was done with it.
Thankful nothing blew up, at least not at her workstation, Selina poured the results of her work into a pre-labelled vial and stoppered it. When she was ready, she handed it in for the Potion Mistress to inspect, and waited to be allowed to retreat to her dorm for the night.

Will turn to whisper in your ear and you know I don't mean to hurt you But you know that it means so much And you don't even feel a thing
Grace had gone and had a nap before dinner to try and get over whatever was bothering her throughout the week. After having a bit of dinner, which the Ravenclaw went with tasty soup for the evening, she headed for potions. Taking a seat she was hoping they’d be doing a potion that wouldn’t be overly difficult. She didn’t think her brain was going to be able to handle difficult today.
Listening to Professor Whitethorne, Grace’s heart fell. ‘Why did it have to be a complicated potion…?’ She thought after hearing about the dangers of being reliant on such a potion. She understood the dangers. The Draught of Peace potion wasn’t something Grace wanted to mess with. Getting her stuff out she got ready to do her upmost best with the potion regardless of how she was feeling. “This potion’s class is going to kill me…” She muttered to herself as she started adding put powdered moonstone into her potion. Having taken a seat next to Selina she couldn’t help but feel like she might have overheard.
When it turned green, Grace stirred the potion until it was blue, and then added more powdered moonstone. Waiting till it turned purple before simmering it till it became pink. Why were their so many colors…? Grace wasn’t even sure it was pink enough but didn’t want to risk putting anymore in for fear that it would turn red or something. Adding syrup of hellebore, she waited till it turned turquoise before simmering it again till purple. Luckily it looked purple possibly a little lighter then she thought it should be but it was still pretty close. Shaking her powdered porcupine quills as best she could, she waited till they were ready before adding them to the potion turned red. Well the potion was a pretty vibrant red, like cherry Jell-O.
Grace then went on to stir until it became the color of orange Jell-O. Adding more quills it turned a bright turquoise. Simmering it again till it was purple… which if you were sticking to Jell-O references would be grape. Taking the unicorn horn powder she added that till it turned pink again and then stirred it till it was red once more. Going back to letting it simmer Grace waited till it was purple again before adding the powdered moonstone turning it grey. It looked like almost a charcoal grey which worried her a little. Letting it simmer, she hoped it would turn orange. Luckily it did, even if it was a darker orange then she expected. Adding the last ingredient of porcupine quills Grace watched as it turned lighter and lighter before becoming a cloudy white. Dropping a couple more in the potion turned completely white.
Maybe Grace had been wrong about herself…

As Selina was working, she realized she wasn't the only one struggling to keep functioning tonight. Grace was working at the station next to hers, and she was certain she heard her friend comment that this class would kill her. Her friend had been feeling unwell for a good chunk of the week, and it wouldn't have surprised Selina if there was some cold or flu bug making its rounds of the school. Of course, it didn't help they were called upon to perform some pretty complex classwork in the middle of the night. "You going to make it, Grace?" she asked in a quiet voice, so as not to bother other students. "If you need a real shot of caffeine, I got a bag of chocolate-covered espresso beans in my kit."
