"Come on, Gecko!" Fair Hunter implored as the pair found their way down to the water's edge. "Stop dawdling. If there's fish down here, I want to see if I can catch them. You can probably learn something" The sail-backed acha trotted to the shoreline and watched the muddy water for flashing fins.

However, what she saw wasn't a delicious fish, but was instead a glowing-eyed caiman. "Um. Actually, let's try... over there. Gecko, don't come over here. Go over there instead."

Fishes! Gecko did not eat fishes very often because Hunter tended to say mean things when she got too close to stock pond (even if it WAS just for bathing...), but this time, she was out on a hunt with her super bestest friend! Humming along to herself, which of course set Peep into singing, she trailed after the much leaner kin in delight.

As Fair Hunter yelled at her to, in fact, NOT join her at the river, Gecko pouted to herself and scuttled off to find food elsewhere. There were reeds! Tilting her head to the side, Gecko snapped the reeds with her teeth. These would be a good chewing snack, at the very least! And it would very much be fun for the little ones! Her heart fluttered at the thought of the little ones. They were so very fun! They played games, and laughed, and did not get upset when she rolled around in the mud for too long.

...She was definitely going to need some more reeds.

Gecko seemed to have found something in the water- at the very least, she was thrashing around quite a bit, so if she hadn't found something she was going to scare off the fish. But as Fair Hunter approached Gecko to chew her out for being so loud, she saw the tell-tale reflection of eyes in the water. Something else was coming to chew Gecko out, or rather chew her up. Fair Hunter couldn't stand for that- that was her sovereign territory and she wasn't going to let some snap-jawed reptile interfere.

"Gecko," she said as quietly as possible, confused as to why there was a tight feeling in her chest, "You need to step back from the water. Slowly and carefully. And silently- try not to make too much noise. You need to do this."

On command, Gecko's body tensed. Her eyes darted over to the reptile, staring at her hungrily. Oh! It seemed that these caimans were not as nice as Fair Hunter's hunting pack. Slitted pupils met her own, and she drew a deep and steady breath. This was not the sort of thing she liked to think of often, but it was very much a thing Gecko remembered. So much history, yes.

She let the breath out, and the world sprung into action. Gecko tossed the reeds to the side, which distracted the Caiman's gaze from her- when it turned its head, Gecko's tail lightning-flashed and cracked alongside the creature's jaw, only to be pulled away rapidly. When the beast once more lunged for her tail, her hoof came down with a sickening crunch upon its skull. Whether it was dead or no, she did not care- Gecko gleefully grabbed her reeds, snipped some more, and turned back to Fair Hunter.

"Lemme look around for a little more food? Please please pleeaaaaaaaase?

It was the most stunning display of brutality and grace Fair Hunter had ever seen. And it came from Gecko. Her useless lump of a cohabitant. All this time she thought that Gecko needed protecting, but now it seemed like perhaps the world needed protection from Gecko.

She was going to seriously have to reevaluate so much of their relationship

She stared into the water. Yet another caiman appeared, its eyes flashing curiously. Fair Hunter stared at it, not even bothering to say anything about it. She shooed it away with a hoof- another display like that would be too much for her mind to handle.

"S-sure, Gecko. We can hang out here a while longer, I guess." Do you mind telling me what that was and where it came from? Her voice was shaky; she needed to sit down.

Beaming around the reeds, Gecko looked around the area a little more. Caimans were not foods! That was not how they worked. They were food finders, yes! Not eatables. Humming to herself, she scrambled off to collect more reeds. They, at the very least, would be delicious and chewable. Fair Hunter may not have seen the value in reeds, but she did! If you toasted them just a bit... ugh! It was so very, very difficult for her not to just chow down into the reeds RIGHT NOW.

Peep had landed on top of the reeds near Fair Hunter. Perhaps it was a stretch, but the small bird seemed to be staring at her with some great concern. But then again, she was simply a stupid bird. What was there further to her? It was not as if this whole thing was a metaphor for something much deeper. Just absurd!

"Ohay! I goh soh moh! Ehhebohy ca eeh wehh toohigh!" Gecko mumbled, barely intelligible around the reeds. The bird fluttered back to its owner, landing atop of Gecko's head as she trotted off into the distance.

Reeds were just the BEST.
