Jakkoa is a high-energy, driven young man with a flare for dramatics. He thrives in public settings and personal interaction, big on building interpersonal relationships with everyone he meets, or as many as possible, and he wilts and grows restless when alone or isolated. He hates being still and loathes idleness of any sort, always needing something or someone to keep him occupied: a puzzle, a new acquaintance, a new project. Anything too simple, repetitive, or unchallenging, however, may not suffice. Mindless repetition is almost as bad as, if not worse than, idleness.

Jakkoa learned at a young age that appearances are, if not everything, certainly a great portion of what is perceived as reality. People like pretty faces, smiles, compliments, and being told what they want to hear. Jakkoa likes being liked. As such, he devotes a great deal of attention to his appearance, both physical and dress wise—his clothes, his hair, his face, his skin—anything he has control over must be in impeccable order and put in the best light. He is quick to smile, whether he’s happy or not, and quick to put in a well-timed compliment, whether he believes it or not, if it will calm a situation or get him closer to where he wants to be with a person. He doesn’t see anything wrong with this. It is simply giving people what they want (pretty, smiling faces and a sense of validation), in exchange for what he wants (attention, information, and personal connections). A fair trade, so far as he’s concerned.

This can, however, result in him coming off as vain, shallow, and fickle. He thinks such labels just demonstrate a lack of understanding of the overall picture. ‘Vain,’ to him, is a word people use if they are ugly, or don’t want to dedicate the time it would take to present themselves in a better light to the world, and are bitter that he is using the tools available to him to their fullest extent. People who call him ‘vain’ have no appreciation for how much thought goes into his processes—but it doesn’t matter, he can get what he wants from them regardless. ‘Shallow’ is a word people use when they wanted more from him than they bargained for or earned, and are disappointed with their lot. ‘Fickle’ is what people call him when they or their ideas were boring, and they’re frustrated that because they were boring, he moved on quickly.

Jakkoa can bore of things sometimes at an alarming rate, and as a result come off flighty. He is also the definition of a ‘fair weather’ friend if he does not see a long term, worthwhile benefit for himself in aiding someone else through their trouble. This isn’t to say he won’t or can’t be loyal in times of trouble, but it must have a payout.

      Nothing Jakkoa does is selfless.

Instead of seeing this as a negative trait, he believes it is natural, balanced, and fair—anything else gives the wrong impression. People who think themselves selfless are either lying to themselves, or are fools with some sort of very unnatural mental process. People are inherently selfish beings, and they must be to survive and interact. This is how the world works. Everything should be a balanced, cost-benefit analysis and contrary from being ‘cold’ or ‘inhuman’, this is simply reality. Doing something without any personal gain is a waste just as much as throwing your hard earned coins into a bottomless pit would be. Personal ‘gain’, however, is a very fluid and flexible concept to him, and can include a feeling of satisfaction from a good deed done, or a favor that will in the end benefit someone else who is close enough to him that their happiness will have positive meaning to him.

Because his father never had a great deal of wealth to his name, most all fine things in his life came out of his mother’s pocket, and while she certainly has and does occasionally furnish fine gifts to him, Jakkoa is far from spoiled and is accustomed to a life of humble spending, a tight purse, and very few things which he can definitively call his. Because of this, he puts great value on those things, and is quick to be possessive of anything that does become ‘his.’ At first, this relates mostly to material things, but his possessiveness can also be applied to a very limited circle of people, namely his father, his siblings, and, should he ever settle with a single significant other, a loved one of that nature.

Click to show.Born as the unexpected result of a romance that was as brief as it was passionate, Jakkoa has had a tempestuous, but not unsavory life since his infancy. After the untimely death of her first husband, councilwoman Vascha Dahli — an active player in Zenan politics at that point — was devastated. Her devastation, however, after a period of imbalance, eventually exerted itself similarly to a midlife crisis, wherein she struck out from her previously rigid mannerisms and routines, traveled further than she ever had, immersed herself in distraction, and dedicated her attention to the moment. Enter: Tammok Vayle.

Barely over half her age, Tammok was a young wind nomad and as charming as he was versed in the landscape. Vascha hired him as a guide, which he excelled at, among other things. Given a number of factors including, but not limited to her age, a child between them was unthinkable—until it was unquestionable. Though she told her lover of the situation, Vascha fully intended at first to terminate the pregnancy early, not out any malice towards the possible future child or Tammok himself, but because above and beyond the health risks imposed by a birth late in life, she had no room in her political lifestyle for an infant, let alone one of mixed heritage born out of wedlock and fathered by a wanderer.

Despite his youth, however, and despite knowing well that the relationship between them was a temporary one nearing its end, Tammok expressed a genuine, almost pleading interest in seeing the pregnancy through. While not wanting to endanger her health, and conceding that if complications arose, it shouldn’t be risked, he wanted the child brought into the world if possible. In requesting this, he promised to assume full responsibility for its upbringing, understanding that Vascha would move on in her life after him, and not asking anything of her, whether it be her time or her financial support.

Healthy as she was, and still feeling the tail end of her adventurous spike — coupled with her innate personal tendency towards seeing things through — Vascha eventually settled with these terms, and spent the nine months of her pregnancy with Tammok, sequestered away in the foothills of Zena’s great mountain range. Jakkoa was born healthy and miraculously without complication on a chilly spring morning. Unable to resist, Tammok asked just once that Vascha reconsider: stay with him, wander with him, and raise the child together with him. To his surprise, she conceded for a time, and during the first year or so of Jakkoa’s life, she played an active role — returning to Zidel to account for her time gone and make reparations, but also continuing to spend long stretches of time with Tammok and her newborn son.

Eventually, however, balancing her duties to the council with this ‘home’ life became too much, and she returned to settlement in Zidel. Because mixed families were all but common there, she extended her invitation that Tammok instead come to live with her, which he also tried for a time. Unfortunately, his restless spirit did in time get the better of him, and sometime after Jakkoa’s second birthday, Tammok was on the road again, this time with child in tow. As things rarely work out as simply or clean cut as planned, so it was with Tammok and Vascha. Though their intimate relationship came to an end, neither cut ties with the other, and whenever he was near enough to facilitate it, Tammok paid visits to Zidel with Jakkoa, that the growing boy would come to know his mother. Additionally, though he never asked it of her and on several occasions attempted to refuse it, Vascha provided supplementary financial support for the boy, having come come from an aristocratic line herself and more than sufficiently equipped to aid in that matter.

When Jakkoa was four years old, Vascha re-married to another iceling, Zidel native, cementing the metaphorical wedge between her and his father. Three years after that, Tammok became involved with Palvari, a fellow wind merchant. Within the year, Palvari became Jakkoa’s step-mother and a constant in his father’s life, and at first, this posed no issue. The woman clearly loved his father deeply and was kind to Jakkoa, even doting on him, allowing him to play-dress in her jewelry and sashes and ‘teaching’ him to dance—to whatever extent an eight-year-old could learn.

This changed when she became pregnant with her first child.

While the circumstances might have been less black and white from an outside perspective, to Jakkoa, the shift felt immediate and stark. Instead of attention to him, all the focus and priority shifted to the new baby on the way and, after her birth, to his little sister and her upbringing. ‘Think of the baby. But what about the baby. Don’t be selfish, Jakkoa.’ Palvari began by treating him with more distance and disinterest, but later with more blatant but still passive-aggressive disfavor. Either he was in the way, or not helping enough. Too vocal, or not showing he cared by speaking up on family matters. Ever selfish, reckless, and too quick to spend money on himself that they needed for taking care of the family. A year and a half after Alise’s birth, Palvari was pregnant again.

By his sixteenth birthday, Jakkoa was older half-brother to two younger sisters, and one younger brother, whom he was eight, ten, and thirteen years older than, respectively. While his step mother is never openly cruel to him or even unkind beyond the parameters of a typical parent, Jakkoa feels personally at odds with her, embittered by her treatment of and attitude towards him, and victimized. True or not, he has convinced himself that she would be happier if her no longer part of ‘her’ perfect family with his father and her three ‘real’ children, and that she sees him as a thorn in that picture, a constant reminder that Tammok once enjoyed a loving relationship with another woman with whom he still refuses to cut ties with completely.

Hates | Dislikes | Indifferent Towards | Acquainted | Likes | Loves | Mated To

    | Wind |

Hargitt || A wind earthling whom Jakkoa initially only knew as the 'son of friends of his father.' As of meeting him again at a later age, however, Hargitt has climbed rank to his faux fiance, traveling partner, and 'guard.'

Rham || A windling boy whom Jak met while trying to make a sale. He's a bit withdrawn and...odd, in Jak's opinion, but not too off-putting for Jak to invite him to dinner.

    | Leaf |

Jacinthus || A leaf earthling whom Jak tried to (and did successfully) sell goods to. Since he purchased a great number of things, Jak was pleased with the interaction.

Shea || A snippety little leafling boy looking for his uncle Uquin. Jakkoa thinks he has some lessons to learn about life.

Uquin || A middle-aged healer, father, and traveler. Though he and Jakkoa do not see eye to eye and clearly have vastly different approaches to life, Jak respects that he is at least intelligent and seems to know what he's doing. He can learn from him, and did try to in the time they spent together after seeking him out.

Uzumati || A wild boy with no sense of personal space or boundaries. Jak is miffed.
