User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Name: Zekiel (No Known Surname) || Title: Priest

Sex: Male || Gender: Male || Sexuality: Panromantic Heterosexual

Age: 24 - 27

Base Traits:agreeableeccentricwhimsical

Personality:
      Simple
          GOOD
        • cheery, peaceful, loyal
        • optimistic, imaginative

          NEUTRAL
        • impressionable, idealistic, obedient
        • credulous

          BAD
        • absent-minded, careless, forgetful
        • gullible, disassociated

Zekiel is agreeable to a fault. He attempts, and usually manages, to take most everything in a positive light, though his outlook has matured noticeably since his earliest years with the Sanctum, and he does a far better job of recognizing when cheer is simply inappropriate for a given situation and people need space instead to grieve or be angry. He believes that the gods give complication and trial for reasons, but that these reasons are often not meant to be known, and has come to see through his years of service to the Sanctum that they are not always kind. Still, this has not shaken his faith that it is his purpose to serve them through service to his people, and that he was brought to do good. He sees every opportunity to please or help someone as an opportunity to please the gods in kind, and as such ends up spending a great deal of his time dedicating his efforts to other people’s interests and wants (sometimes at the expense of his own, though he sees it as furthering his own interest in helping others and by virtue of that, the gods).

While much of his intent dedication to servicing others and finding positivity in a situation no matter what is inherent in his nature, part of it, too, is almost certainly a result of his early upbringing, wherein he had to find happiness in the strangest of places, and it was necessary to always conduct himself around the interests of others. Once he was taken to the Sanctum, his life brightened significantly, and since then all things have seemed like blessings. He does his best to earn that in all the ways he thinks he can.

Despite his positive outlook and genuinely cheery nature, however, Zekiel has always been an odd boy. Words, especially, fascinate him. Though he wasn’t permitted to speak often as a child, prior to his adoption by the Sanctum, he has always listened intently, absorbing language and in certain instances, hyper-focusing on certain particular words which he considers especially blessed and precious. As a youngling, he would repeat them, backwards and forwards, taking and parceling apart their component sounds and rearranging them as though trying to decipher a message therein. Yet, while clearly important to him, from an outsider’s perspective these words are wholly random: vessel, wondrous, tide, apparent, footprint, and moss. The list of ‘his’ words changes from time to time, occasionally growing and other times shrinking, but with a select few that never seem to leave. Particularly as he grew and became more verbose, Zekiel would delight in interjecting ‘his’ words into his speech patterns as often as the situation permits, sometimes making for odd exchanges or repetitive language on his part. Mostly he has grown out of this in the context of public spaces, though a few slip in. He reserves most of his impulse for times of meditation and prayer.

Though it was that particular habit that first drew suspicions that he might be meant for the Sanctum, Zekiel exhibits other mannerisms which, while not downright unpleasant, do make him seem slightly out of touch with reality – or certainly not in touch with it in quite the same way as most others. As previously noted, his unrelenting good cheer is at times uncanny, and can make him seem slightly displaced from reality, though he has become better over time as mentioned at recognizing when seriousness is needed. He gets along well with most all, but can find it difficult to make the most intimate connections, loving most in a sense but feeling deep connection with few.

Beyond this, however, Zekiel is a generally whimsical soul. He sees the world as an ever-moving, ever-blessed and wildly complex masterpiece or puzzle, woven together by the gods themselves and ripe with pushing and pulling energies as certain and natural as the tides. From this broad perspective, he and all the rest of the world including all the people and creatures in it, are at their core different segments of a single energy, functioning together. He finds it all fascinating, loves to speak about whatever comes to his mind on a whim from there, and in the same vein, is very easily distracted. His penchant for whimsy makes him forgetful, and sometimes openly careless. It can also further existing difficulties with communicating with him, and make him seem absent-minded mid-conversation or disassociated with what’s going on in front of him. But in the end, despite his issues, Zekiel is fairly good at what he does best: engaging with and serving his people, attempting to make the world a happier place, and dedicating himself to his gods.

Jevan was a simple man of simple means. Fisherman. Trader. Tavern drunk. While never fortunate or clever enough with his tongue to convince any woman to wed him on his own merit, he did have his pursuits, one of which was Laenah Osgrey. A pretty woman, and brighter than he by half again, it was a great wonder to all that they spent any time in each other’s company at all—and even more so when, by no plan of either of theirs, she announced she was pregnant. Jevan denied fathering it, but by some combination of Laenah’s mother’s harpy-ish niggling and her father’s less-benign threats to his person and manhood, Jevan eventually conceded to being bound in matrimony that the child not be born out of wedlock.

The two were married quickly and cheaply under the leaking roof of an old church, and afterward Jevan returned to his business, his boat, and the angry sea. Laenah stayed with her parents for most of her pregnancy, only moving into Jevan’s meager accommodations in the last month of her final term. Jevan left before dawn on the day of Zekiel’s birth, steering out over a glassy calm sea without a cloud in the sky. The storm hit just after high noon, and kept him out until well after dark. He returned home exhausted with a damaged skiff, lucky to be alive, and entered his house to find his wife’s dead body, and his newborn son still covered in her drying blood.

With no witnesses to the event, Jevan was left to assume that childbirth killed her, and unlucky as the boy was, Jevan nearly left Zekiel to the storm with his mother’s corpse lest the bad luck bleed into his own life. But he found he didn’t have it in him.

Instead, begrudgingly, Jevan kept his unasked for child. With no one else to look after him and grandparents convinced that the child was cursed, having killed their daughter upon coming into the world, Zekiel’s first years of life were confined and solitary. Jevan would shut him into a room, lock the door, and leave in the morning before dawn as he always did to fish, sometimes not returning until night. As Ze grew to an age where most children learned to talk, he befriended the walls and the floorboards and the dust mites, holding conversations with them until Jevan returned home in the evenings.

In his father’s presence, Ze never spoke. Everything seemed to anger Jevan: the way Zekiel sat, the way he looked, or the way he breathed. Jevan rarely engaged him other than to bring food, and when he did speak, it was the same: You killed your mother. I didn’t even like her, you know, but I married her because of you, and I knew well enough you were a bad omen coming into this world. You’re lucky I didn’t leave you out in the rain with her. Zekiel learned the accusations by heart. He learned that every foul thing that occurred under their roof was the gods’ recompense for his crime and that one day, only if he were very, very good, after a lifetime of service to the gods, he might pay off his life debt. But it wasn’t likely, in Jevan’s opinion. Ze wasn’t a very good or special boy, after all. Just a deadly burden.

But then sometimes — on especially rare, especially good days — Jevan would talk about fish, the wind, and the sea. These, in Zekiel’s opinion, were the best days of all, and he would listen with rapt attention, as though to memorize every word.

So it went until near to Zekiel’s fifth birthday, when Jevan deemed him grown enough to begin taking on tasks of at least some use—whatever his small hands could handle. Jevan delivered Zekiel to the local sailmaker and seamstress to work during the day. Whatever services the child could be coerced into rendering for the day in exchange for whatever food it took to keep the small boy moving. Marleya Taler had birthed many sons in her time, and was fond enough of free labor to agree to the arrangement. Besides, all in the village knew that Jevan was not kind to the small ‘bad omen’ he kept boarded away in his fishing hut, and leery as she was of angering fate, the fisherman’s wide-eyed four-year-old was not ominous to her. She took Zekiel into her shop and taught him to scrub sails — and floors, and nets, and fetch water, empty buckets, and mix soap.

There, Zekiel began to discover ‘his’ words. After setting himself to whatever tasks she put upon him, Ze would listen to everything the woman or her customers said and then, because she let him, he would speak—and speak, and speak. Sometimes to her, and sometimes to the air itself, so far as she could tell. She took it for the natural babbling of a toddler at first. Until that seemed not to be the case. His hyper-focus, repetition, and borderline obsession with specific words or phrases in turn became downright unnerving on certain occasions, and distracting him with conversation worked in some instances, but less so in others.

Marleya the sailmaker was the first to suspect that Jevan’s cursed child was touched by gods. She kept it that way initially, holding the thought to herself for a number of reasons, not least of which being that she didn’t know what to expect Jevan’s reaction would be to such a suspicion. Eventually, however, as she grew more certain of herself, she informed the Sanctum personally without Jevan’s counsel.

Whatever resistance she might have feared never came. Representatives from the Sanctum met with Zekiel once before returning again on the eve of his sixth birthday to take him in and Jevan, if anything, seemed to consider it a burden finally lifted from his shoulders after six years of forbearance.

FAMILY

    | Parents |

Jevan - father - Yaeli Fisherman || Jevan is a curt, pessimistic, and stubborn man, driven by habit and set in his ways. He kept Zekiel around as a child thanks to whatever shred of moral obligation he felt left in him, and was happy to have the burden off his shoulders early. Later, Zekiel returns to him as a grown young man to do unpaid for work when he can find the time, hoping to gain a better understanding of the man who sired him. Jevan, not having seen him in well over a decade, does not recognize him.

Laenah - mother - Yaeli Barmaid || Unbeknownst to Zekiel, he inherits many traits from his mother, from her fair complexion to her once upon a time more open worldview and free loving spirit. She died giving birth to him, however, so anything he learns of her will be second-hand from the sources who once knew her personally in life.

    | Yaeli |

Tacrith || Zekiel met Tacrith through the Sanctum, having been bid to offer service at the health center where Tacrith has undertaken his tutelage as a physician. After, Zekiel has had numerous occasions to meet with the young man, about his age, and considers him to be especially serious, hard working, driven, and blessed with talent and ambition for the path he has taken. Over the years, he has become one of Zekiel's closest friends, and Zekiel loves him like family.

Fallon || A young, burgeoning priestess-to-be of similar age and rank to Zekiel, Fallon is friendly, studious, and dedicated to her plants. Zekiel respects her most for her patience with him and her appreciation of the world's natural beauty and growth.

Wensley || A young woman who came to the Sanctum seeking guidance with regard to a certain incident of a private nature. Zekiel will soon find the gods have a greater place for her in his life than he could have known from that chance encounter.

Ko || A bubbling and energetic young boy so often venturing out on his own or hanging with orphans that you might think him one - but in fact, he has a family the size of a small kingdom. Zekiel has had many occasions to engage with Ko and considers him a blessed spirit with a beautiful and impressively large family.

      Rainer ||

Malta || A nervous and apologetic girl prone to stammering her way through conversations - Zekiel encountered her initially while taking an unguided solo tour through an unfamiliar town. She helpfully directed him back towards his inn despite uncertainties, and he has since come to see her as a girl of great heart with a deep love (and impressive understanding, so far as he can tell) of the beasts she works with.

Jalase || A city guard, now resident of Pajore - Zekiel met Jalase first on a trip outside of the city, but has since met with him again thanks to inquiries and connections with the man's sister, Ysella, who joined the Sanctum some years before Zekiel himself. Zekiel finds Jalase to be a serious but kind sort with good intentions for the world, and hopes to get to know him better in the future.

Finnufarinel || A scrappy, dirty, possibly-feral boy Zekiel met at the church steps while feeding birds with one of the youngling Chosen. Finn is a wild-eyed and spirited soul with great energy - and hunger. Zekiel does not know him very well yet, but since he appears to have possible connections to Tacrith, he figures this may change and has taken it upon himself to introduce the two.
