[BRP] Simple Request [Cue/Forgotten/Chosen/Break]

It was nice to have visitors.

When the children had been born, Once Forgotten had insisted they make a home for themselves, even if only until they were grown, but he can become fond of his little plot of land. It was comfortable, they had a fire for cooking and his little garden project was finally coming along. He was pleased.

Now he even had visitors.

"I’m sure Cue will be home soon," he told the lovely pair of parents-to-be. "Can I get you something? Berries? Dried meat?"

"No, thank you. We’re fine," Chosen One replied, smooth and courteous.

Beside him Breakdown said nothing. She only smiled, as she’d been told to do. Good girl, he thought, bumping his hips lightly against hers, letting her know how pleased he was.

The Kiokote was talking, nattering about family and how exciting it was to raise children but Chosen one drowned most of it out. It was unfortunate they had to even be here in the presence of such a bumbling oaf but putting up with him was easier than tracking a Legendary through the swamp.

Plus she could hardly say no to a blessing if he knew where her family lived.

She could tell something was wrong as soon she'd neared home, even before the chirpy prattling of her...her...of Once Forgotten reached her hunter's ears. It was always the way with these. She didn't know exactly what - perhaps it was the smell of blood in the air, but then, they didn't always smell of blood. Perhaps it was just an imperceptible difference in the fabric of the Swamp. As if the beat of where their heart should be was replaced with a stillness that was nothing.

She didn't say a word as she returned.

Once Forgotten was in the middle of telling his guests about the time a young System Shock had declared war on all birds after one had pooped on his head when Cue arrived.

"Ah, here she is," he beamed, looked at her with a bright, adoring gaze. "Welcome home. Look, visitors!" It was only as he went to introduce them, that he realized neither of them had told him their names. "They’re here to see you." For a blessing, obviously.

Chosen One shifted slightly to get a better view of the Legendary but otherwise didn’t move. He studied her, gaze thoughtful. One of the MotherFather’s own chosen. She seemed strong. Whether that would be in his favour or not, they would see. He smiled, all teeth.
"We’re delighted to meet you. My name is Chosen One."

Breakdown smiled but said nothing, she merely dipped her head in a pretty bow.

(Heck, she does. Just gotta get her some scars!)

"I hope that I may say the same," she said, passing her gold gaze slowly over her guests (and completely ignoring Once Forgotten).

"What is it you desire, child?" she moved forward to make it clear - her question was addressed directly to Breakdown.

Breakdown’s smiled flickered, strained around the edges - but it held. She said nothing for a long time. She merely waited, body held rigid, anticipating instructions, her gaze on the Legendary but all her attention focused on the buck beside her.

Chosen One seemed unconcerned that Cue Queue’s question was deliberately not directed towards himself, though inside something dark was forming at the blatant disregard. His hip bumped Breakdown’s again. “Answer her question, sweetheart.”

“Of course,” Breakdown visibly brightened, perked herself up as if this was the most important performance she would ever take part in. “We,” she stressed. “would be honoured by a blessing. We hope that our offspring will grow up strong and wise, obedient to the MotherFather’s will.”

Completely oblivious to anything that wasn’t the love of his life not saying hello, Once Forgotten pouted.

She stared at Breakdown for the longest time, burning eyes unblinking, after the doe had finished her pretty little speech.

"Very well," she finally said.

"May your children be strong and wise," she said, "and obedient to the Motherfather's will."

Then her eyes did travel to the buck as she recited 'Motherfather,' but they were back on the doe when she nodded.

"That will be all."

“Thank you,” Breakdown squeaked.

They’d gotten exactly what they wanted and yet Chosen One couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d somehow been bested.

It was time to leave, even if he wasn’t pleased by the blatant dismissal. He smiled anyway, grateful, friendly. “Thank you for the blessing and,” he looked towards the still pouting Kiokote, “such gracious hospitality.”

Once Forgotten beamed at the praise.

“That will be all.” he nudged Breakdown to get her moving. “Perhaps we shall see you again some day.” Then they were walking away, leaving behind the Legendary with her piercing gaze.

Only when their steps had faded from their glen and beyond, did she turn to Once Forgotten.

"At least," she huffed, "you haven't been cooked and eaten, I suppose."

He didn't know what she was talking about but Once Forgotten was glad to finally have her attention. And speaking being cooked and eaten...

"I'll start on dinner," he announced - and if he stole a little kiss to her cheek before he started, well, who could blame him?
