When not in combat, use this thread for any hunting/tracking scenarios that lead up to combat. Your team leaders will coordinate with each other as to when they're entering combat. When this happens, use the main Mount Daimyaku thread for your combat proceedings. When combat has finished, return to this thread.

Though he doubted they'd have taken note of him being near them, Kuhaku silently listened to his assigned temporary students as they introduced themselves and discussed minor things such as their skill sets and individual proficiency's. After a moment or so of just listening to them he emerged from where he'd been sitting, stepping out near the male whom he'd heard was called Ayura he raised his hand into a lazy wave, barely bringing his hand up fully before he spoke. "Yo. Sorry I'm late, I was originally supposed to go to the top of mountain to wait for you guys, but I was made your leader at last minute by Eiji-sensei. My name is Kuhaku Strehkovsky, some of you may know me; some of you may not. However for the time being you may simply call me Kuhaku-sensei or just Sensei if you wish. I'll be leading you to the top of the mountain to complete this test. However don't think that I'll be doing everything for you, this is a test for you our Genin; to find out how strong you are mentally and physically. With that in mind; one of you tell me how you wish to proceed forward and I'll critique where it's necessary." With that said he crossed his arms over his chest, casually forming a small block of wood to sit on beneath him as he waited for one of them to respond. He didn't really care which of them spoke first, since in the end they'd have to come to a consensus themselves instead of relying on him to lead them fully. Would he help them where needed? Sure, but he wasn't going to hold their hands through the whole thing.

Mood: Dreary | Status: ok | Action: Thinking about life

Water is nothing if not ingemination

With a thoughtful look in his eyes, Ayura responded to the best of his abilities to Armand. "Well briefly, I'm more of a sealing specialist. I deal with barriers, sealing jutsu, defense. That doesn't mean I have my fair share of offensive techniques, but I'm much more suited to a battle lasting for a long period of time." His head tilted to his side as he heard the splash, looking over his shoulder he saw little Hana standing shivering in the water. Up until now he hadn't seen anything dangerous so he thought it was safe. Come on Hana everything is safe. Ayura sent the thought to her to partially test if the seal he had put down was still in place. Even with that sent, the teenager moved towards Hana. Embracing her in an odd sort of hug, he gently rubbed her back and shoulders in some sort of effort to get out any numbness she was feeling.

What he wasn't expected was their instructor for this phase of the training. As Kuhaku stepped out, Ayura's senses went on high alert and he moved more in front of Hana. It wasn't thought out as it was more instinctual. Already the briefing he had been given by his father on the various higher ups in Otogakure was refreshing himself. Hana hadn't been there, but Ayura knew all the Jonin and above by facial recognition and name. Still though, he made the action seem like nothing more than adjusting Hana's clothing as he gave her a small reassuring smile and stood back up, brushing a few of his long blond and multicolored locks from his eyes. He gave Kuhaku a polite smile and bowed deeply out of the teachings of respect from his home.

"Kuhaku-sensei, it is a pleasure to have you as our leader." After the bow, Ayura stood up and thought intently for a moment before inquiring to the group. "If I may be so bold as to speak first? I am reminded of what our elevated Shogun briefly spoke to us before the start of the exercise. We are supposed to treat this as a mission during a war time. Our goal and mission is to reach the top of the mountain; however, no order was established so I do not feel the meaning of the mission is necessarily to reach the top of the mountain first. Additionally, I think we should spend some time discussing any information we have regarding both the other genin and team leaders. Until the end of this exercise they will be regarded as our enemies, and while I hate fighting I find it best to be prepared." Ayura paused and chewed over the next set of words before he tried to speak them as eloquently as possible. "However, while I am not one to provoke conflict, I feel there are many other genin who are itching for a chance to prove what they have learned from the academy and have in their own personal repertoire. Primarily, we should focus on keeping a wide area around us known at all times through any form of sensing possible. Secondarily, it might be important to just wait for a few hours. Through waiting we could hold off the possibility of running into another group and conduct recon at the same time."

Ayura waited expectantly and began to feel a bit self conscious. While he had spoken about numerous things, he hadn't presented a method to travel up the mountain but he still felt as if everything else he had mentioned was important to warrant thought.

an encore to the tenacity of life.

Armand gave a bit of a wave to Kuhaku as he appeared. "Greetings, Sensei~" As he listened to Ayura, he began to formulate a bit more of a strategy. Currently, they had little to no comparable offense with genin who were most likely good at the explosive sorts of offense...that's often what the academies produced. "So far, we're resilient and can last a while, and at the least fend off damage well enough. If we don't have to be first, we can at least outlast them. We don't even have to engage the enemy, only make it to the top."

Armand would find a nearby twig and began to draw in the falling snow. "I don't suppose I'm in command of our Sensei's positioning...but regardless, here's a quick and dirty formation~" He scratched out some markings in the snow with their first letters of their names to indicate position. "We'll take an echelon formation, starting right and shifting to the other side if we need to, in case we sense activity. I'll take middle, Ayura can take point due to sensory, and Hana should be behind me to stay out of any potential lines of attack. Being in the middle will also allow me to react to either side and assist in the taking of damage~"

He stopped and looked around. "We advance at combat pacing up the mountain side and keep any eye out for enemy contacts. If we get the jump on them, we'll try to stay low and let them pass. Or, I could use some wind ninjutsu to make a more violent snowstorm around our immediate area, shielding us from sight. If our paths become parallel, we'll have to engage, or pass them and make a tactical retreat upwards toward the goal, at least stalling them as we progress."

With the tactical babble finished, he slowed his breathing and looked around at his team. It might've been a bit to process. "We can find or create hidden shelter if we don't reach the peak by nightfall. Trying to traverse a snowy mountain in the dark could be more dangerous than enemy groups. Well, what do you think~?"

                                                                (Chakra): 100/100

As soon as she was given permission, Hana all but rocketed into Ayura's hug. However, it didn't help much because Ayura was also wet from his recent dive into the pool. Breathing into her hands to quickly warm them up, Hana cast some quick hand signs once she could feel her fingers again. A few mumbled words and the water on both her and Ayura was suctioned off to form a shield of water. The barrier shimmered in place for but a moment before it was released, the liquid it was formed out of falling outwards so that the newly dry pair did not get wet again.

Feeling much warmer now that she was dry but still shivering from the lingering cold, Hana wrapped her arms around herself and restrained her desire to re-cling to Ayura. The jounin had just arrived and while she did not recognize him, the way he carried himself and the tone Ayura spoke to him with told her that this was someone she should act proper around.

During all the talk, Hana gave a little sneeze followed by a sniffle. She managed to get in a brief, "Good morning Kuhaku-sensei," edge-wise and a bow that mimicked Ayura's but otherwise waited patiently for the others to finish. She wanted to add something constructive to the discussion because she was expected to show that she was smart, basically. However, the two older genin said everything her little mind could think of and more. There really wasn't much to add. She did make one correction, though, "Um, Armand, I don't think Ayura can sense much more than I can," a comment from that correction, "so it appears that none of us can sense," a brief word on the current conditions in regards to the intended plan, "The mist is super duper thick. I couldn't see anything on the way here, so I don't think looking around will be very helpful," an alternative to trying to keep an eye out for other groups,"How about we go a little bit up and then walk sideways until we see tracks left behind by another group? Then we just follow those tracks. We'll know where one other group is and we might not have to face as many obstacles and traps," and finally a counterargument to what she just said, "That means we'll definitely be second or later, though, and in a war, isn't time valuable? We might not be told that we have to be first, but it might be expected for us to go as fast as possible. Plus, we might not find any tracks."

Bringing his hand up to his chin, Kuhaku ran his finger along his jawline in thought, silently pondering to himself on which plan would benefit them the most when it came to actually surviving in a war; since that's what this was, a war scenario that they had to survive in. Personally he agreed with a combination of of Armand and Ayura's plans, Hana's wasn't too bad, however at the same time when it came to war you usually didn't try to actively search for people to engage in combat with. However at the same time she had some decent points regarding the whole "reach the top" part of the test, since they weren't told by Eiji-sensei if they had to rush to the top or if it mattered in the end. After a second he stood up from his seat, brushing off the back of his pants before veins bulged around his eyes, his Neo Byakugan activating silently. Though he was warned about the fog affecting his eyes beforehand it was still somewhat strange to have an area that just seemed to dissapear. Even if his functional sight was still more than a mile in each direction he was used to it being nearly double that range. Even if he'd be able to see other teams he wouldn't directly point them out; his job was to guide them through this test, not hold their hands throughout the whole thing.

Turning his head to focus on his squad the Jounin spoke in a soft tone, though he made sure he was loud enough for them to hear. "All your plans are solid, however some parts of them aren't. Hana; in this type of war time scenario you try to do as much research as possible about your potential opponents, much like you would investigate and research things about the enemy village. However since you all weren't informed of this head of time I'll simply tell you this, on each of the opposing squads there is a Hyuga much like myself, and while our functional sight ranges are reduced in this fog, we can still see rather far. I myself can see over a mile in every direction right now, so it would be wise to assume the other Hyuga's can see half of that, which still gives them a huge advantage against you three. The best thing to do for now is to setup a temporary base near here, this will give us access to water easily, however you three should also attempt to do some hunting for food, alongside foraging for things like wood for a fire. Since this is what war would be like, it lasts far longer than a single day normally; so food and water are necessities. With that in mind you three split up the jobs among yourselves, and I'll keep an eye out for any enemies approaching our vicinity. Afterwards we will begin construction of our temporary base before we go out scouting." With that said he would fall silent, allowing him to focus mostly on keeping his eye out for people that enter his range of sight.

                      Stats]

                      • Speed: 8
                      • Strength: 9

                      Passives
                      • [BLOODLINE] ENHANCED REACTIONS Having spent most of their time in close quarters combat, the Midnight Affair are able to react slightly more quickly to attacks than their opposition, making them just slightly harder to deal with in battle. Sometimes, this edge can make all the difference.
                      Medical:
                      • [BLOODLINE] Caltrops Passive, but Activated
Caltropsobjects that can be created by a Midnight Brawler at will. This is one aspect that makes it clear that these techniques come from a hereditary line, or a bloodline. Caltrops can be weaved in the palms of the Midnight Brawler. These objects are generally left all around the field throughout the battle, and do not hurt or impair the Midnight Brawler, but can easily hurt and impair enemies. The caltrops are always poisoned and can easily penetrate even thick boots to stab into someone's feet. The poison can weaken the legs of the target, slowing them by 2 speed and also inflicting pain and infection; these issues will not kill you in battle, but will render you weaker and nauseous. Throughout the battle, more and more will cover the field, thus walking becomes nearly impossible without being constantly wounded. The strings are also laid around the field, connecting from tree to tree; etc. These strings can cut or bind people. Dashing quickly between trees or walls, these strings could easily rip your throat open.
                      • [BLOODLINE] While battling your Sworn Foe (attacking, defending, dodging, etc) you have a +1/+1 base to both stats. You may declare anyone a sworn foe, though there are limits on changing your sworn foe. You can change you sworn foe twice, however upon reaching S-rank you can change three times.
                      • [BLOODLINE] +1 rank to damage reduction (improving on their Taijutsu Class passive) up to Kage rank, upon which they do not improve this bonus. (This means that at Sannin rank you'd be immune to Jounin techniques, but at Kage you don't increase the +1's rank so you're still only immune to Jounin.)
                      • [BLOODLINE] May use one Taijutsu style for free and gain stats, may learn one additional taijutsu style.
                      • [BLOODLINE] Direct hits on the opponent take away [10] chakra points. When hitting an opponent with Hyuuga techniques, 10% of the usual chakra drain is applied. For example, using the complete 8 Trigrams 64 Palms on an opponent will take 64 points as opposed to 640.

Slipping out of Ayura's arms, Hana volunteered, "Yes, sir. I'll help with foraging.". Despite the tension of the war simulation mission, Hana was just happy that there was something she knew she could help with.

Bearing in mind that time was valuable, Hana scampered off before any nay or yay sayers could respond. Right before reaching the first tree that would cover her from normal vision of the group, though, she turned back to the group and assured the group, mainly Ayura, "Oh, and I'll make sure to not go too far away. I just want to go a little further from the lake to try and find dry wood so that our fire doesn't smoke. Okay?". Her right index finger and thumb curled into a circle while the rest of her fingers extended away as Hana made the "okay" sign and waited for confirmation. Once she was given permission by both Ayura and Kuhaku, she would be slip quietly into the woods, taking care to make no more noise than necessary. She did not want to attract unwanted attention, after all.

True to her word, Hana's route would not deviate far from the group's meeting spot. She walked past three or four trees before curving back in to circle back the meeting spot. Her movement formed something like a zig-zagged circle, and every now and then, she'd pop back to the meeting area with her arms full of something, usually branches but sometimes other greenery. She'd plop her spoils into three rough piles: dry branches in once, large branches that looked interesting in another, and miscellaneous greenery in the third. The miscellaneous greenery included whatever she was kind of sure was edible if her memory was correct. After organizing the results of her scavenger hunt, she'd bustle quietly back into the forest and repeat the process until she reached the edge of the lake. By that point, Hana would have likely collected a sizable pile of firewood at least and would have no desire to stray further from home base.

The whole process would take some time. Although, it was entirely dependent on Hana being given permission and nothing interrupting her short forays into the wild.

Water is nothing if not ingemination

A lot of information was given out within a short amount of time. Ayura proceeded to nod in turn to both of his team mates as they each also presented their ideas on the best way to go about this exercise, as far as they knew. At last, their leader gave them some direction as well so they all seemed to take it. Inwardly, Ayura wanted to set up the base. He cursed himself, thinking of how his father could set up an array of seals to scry and protect within seconds. In time, I'll learn those techniques. For now though, I must be patient.

Ayura mentally gave Hana a signal through his seal that was on her before turning back to the other two team members. "I think I'll get to hunting then, I'll try not to make too much noise. Along the way I'll even lay some traps down, I'll keep a note of their locations and give them to the both of you later." The traps were almost a double sided blade. By placing them on the ground, they would be able to snatch up anything that got caught in them and suspend them. For food, this would be extremely important. However, it was also a sign of life if another enemy team were to come close enough. HE just would have to ensure that they weren't easily noticeable and did the job easily.

With that, Ayura moved off and began moving among the trees. He moved carefully, attempting not to leave any footprints that could alert anybody as he kept his eyes looking for tracks. In his mind, almost half an hour went buy before he had snagged a few eggs and had some birds tucked into his coat. The entire time, he was sending signals to Hana. These weren't meant to be insistent but every now and then it was a continuous sign that everything was fine. The time elongated as he carefully and deliberately used his spools of ninja wire to make traps amongnst the trees. If anything stepped in them, he would be able to suspend them for quite a bit of time. With his jobs done-hopefully-Ayura made his way back to the camp site with his gatherings in tow.

an encore to the tenacity of life.

Ayura's regular signals assured Hana of her safety, allowing her to happily collect firewood and any other manner of useful plant life with little to no worry. In turn, she would always respond with a short statement on whatever menial task she happened to be doing: stuff like or

Her rather tight area of collection made it so that she was the first to finish with her job. There was no sight of Kuhaku-sensei when she returned, but she figured that was because he was off doing some task or other.

After sorting the last of her simple bounty, Hana separated small segments from each pile for immediate use. By the time Ayura was back, Hana had made a small pile of tinder with a stack of dry wood nearby for a campfire and was sorting through the miscellaneous pile, divvying up the contents into raw edibles, cooked edibles, and stuff that looked like edibles at first but were actually not. She had not yet lit a fire, though, because fire was dangerous. She left that for the older Ayura to do.

Ayura's return perked up Hana. She was quick to stand up from her work on the pile and greet him with a restrained but still happy, "Ayura! Welcome back!". There was no hug, mostly because Hana noticed that Ayura's coat was bulging a bit. In her hand, she held a tuber of some sort, one that she was trying to ascertain if it was edible or not.

She didn't have much else to say, but neither was Hana given the time to say anything else, nor was Ayura given the time to respond to Hana. At the moment of her greeting, a seal appeared beneath Hana. In the next moment, she was gone, teleported to who knows where.
