Mel quirked her head to the side as she listened, blinking a bit. Despite Lala's les than appealing description of it, she actually seemed.... curious. "... Is there very much crime out there?" Annd, that was probably why. 'Bleak' seemed to suggest 'overlooked' to her, at least wherein the law was concerned. And of course, Mel was nothing if not a task person-- she liked to have a goal, and a job to do, and an ambition to fulfill. It was probably why she was so invested in sticking to Castelia, at least at first; it wasn't exactly heavy in crime, but it had it's fair share, and it was big enough to keep any police officer busy. And once she got experience there, she was pretty sure she could apply it just about anywhere.
Speaking of... She smiled as Lafayette complimented her home place. "I certainly enjoyed it," she remarked, then tilted her head some, "I haven't been to Anville, though.... I'll have to check it out." She was curious what kind of place, could turn out a guy like Lala. She chuckled at his comment, lifting a hand to stifle the laugh a bit, before shrugging and shaking her head. "Don' worry about it, it was honestly rather amusing," she remarked, her eyes lighting up, "In fact, I rather enjoyed it. She's a good conversationalist." She blinked at the question, then smiled, giving another, lighter shrug. Kiwi had now apparently caught Cheri staring at her, and turned its head down, returning the stare, but not moving otherwise. It certainly didn't seem bothered, in the least. "Oh, just... something about cotton candy? And she was asking some questions. Mentioned where you were, and all," she commented. She couldn't even recall that many details, it was so long ago, but it had been incredibly fun. Lafayette frowned and then shrugged at the question. "Dunno sheila. Ain’ nevah been mahself… or can’ remember it," he said. Which was true; he’d spent all his life in Anville… family that visited came to them, not the other way around, and those instances were few and far between. Not that his dad really seemed to care much but well… huh, it was odd to think about. He’d never questioned it before and didn’t intend to now. "Sure if there is though, they deal with it righ’ quick." He gave a cheeky grin.
"My da’s tough like a wall a Kangas. If they breed’em like that in Orro then I’m thinkin’ crims stand no chances." His voice was confident with it’s praising tone; it was fairly evident what he thought of his father. "Sure yeh can visit though and find out or somethin’." Because that was a safe thing to suggest to another individual; visit the land and find out about the levels of crime for yourself. Absolutely the best thing to suggest. Ever.
Lafayette listened, a puzzled look on his face as Mel explained what Cheri had been texting to her. "Realleh? You too?" He absently remarked, shooting the little pink Espurr a look of wonder. She was still staring at the Cybun and seemed to lock in as the robot returned the stare, now engaged in… what might’ve been a perpetual staring contest. If that was a thing. It was odd how intense her stare was at Kiwi. Arceus, was she strange.
"She did the same thing to anotha’ sheila… didn’ know she was obsessin’ ovah the stuff." He murmured. She’d practically turned into a vibrating furball once she’d received the candy the first time… it was better that she didn’t go conning others for it if that’s what he could expect. He perked, eyeing Mel ambiguously a moment at her comment. Oh? Cheri had been mentioning other things as well? "Oh yeh? Like wha’ sheila? She blabbin’ meh life to yeh? Borin’ yeh ta tears?" He teased with a grin. He was … curious to a degree what Cheri had shared; he had faith she wouldn’t reveal anything important but well… it never hurt to ask, right?

Mel looked curious. "Huh.... Really? Your dad never talked about it much?" she queried, a bit surprised. Lala knew where his father was from, but not what it was like? That was interesting.... maybe his dad just wasn't the story teller type. She looked at Lafayette with genuine interest as he talked about his family; it was probably a somewhat inaccurate assumption, but she sort of figured he didn't talk about his family a whole lot. Even though he was clearly proud of his dad. She smiled. It was sort of endearing, like a little boy boasting their dad was the strongest in the whole world. She smiled softly. "Oh, well, I don't doubt it. Still, I'd be curious if they're all as ready to take on crime as you're father seems to be," she added playfully, giving a slightly mischievous smile to convey the tone. She certainly wasn't trying to downplay his praise or opinion, of course, but she did question whether just because his father was tough, that meant the whole area beat their own crime down.
She quirked a curious eyebrow, but her smile was uncertain, when Lala seemed to suggest Cheri had done the same to others. "Was she... doin' that with others, too...?" she asked, unsure how to feel about that. She'd gotten a kick out of them, but it was a little weird to think that she'd just been doing the same with so many others... Somehow, it cheapened it a bit, but Mel tried to ignore that; she knew it was a pretty immature response. Lala gave an answer, and Mel frowned. Another girl, too? That was.... either a weird coincidence, or a really weird trend for Cheri. Had it been intentional...? She gave a look down at the pokemon, brow furrowed and a slight frown on her face. She looked back with raised eyebrows as Lafayette teased about what she said, then laughed. "No no, of course not," she remarked with a smirk, "Jus', talked about nonsense mostly." She really preferred not to divulge the specifics. She nudged him. "Sure the records still on yer phone, love," she "reassured" jokingly. He could always have Cheri read it o him.

"Nope, not realleh, jus’ ain’ his thing," Lafayette said, giving a shrug. Was that odd? It didn’t seem all that odd to him though the way Mel expressed surprise over the fact had him wondering differently. At least in that moment. He mulled over the thought, redirecting his attention as the conversation continued. His grin returned, though he looked disapprovingly at her question. "I don’ see why not!" he commented, chest puffing out a bit. Mel had a point and whether it was some level of unwarranted pride or honest ignorance to the fact that not everyone in the region could be a carbon copy of one another, Lafayette didn’t seem interested in letting up on the idea.
He simmered down a bit as they continued, head nodding in confirmation. "Mhm, s’pose so. Ran in to ‘em too… wouldn’ a known otha’ wise." He shrugged, missing the frown that crossed the woman’s face. Probably because he hadn’t thought much of it other than … annoying. "Sure she sent out more ta be honest with yeh, sheila. She was realleh workin’ it, can’ believe it was just you two." He murmured. Like, he was certain Mel and Regina were busy people… the ding was constantly going off from what he recalled so… others? Maybe.
Lafayette chuckled though a subtle sour look crossed his face in direct conflict with the action. "Yeh… whole ‘lot a good it does me." His tone was… flat as he made the remark, though a smile still managed to return to his face. "If it’s all nonsense though, I guess I ain’ missin’ nothin’, hm?" He picked up the pace a moment, spinning around and walking backwards now. "So yeh a fan a’ nonsense, Mello? Wha’, yeh got family mad as a cut Ekans?" He inquired, turning the conversation to learn about her, ignoring the imminent dangers that came with walking backwards....

Mel gave Lala an almost... sympathetic look, though she tried to make it look more amused, which came out mixed. She didn't want him catching on, that she really didn't think his assumptions were accurate. Just because his dad was great -- which was assuming his perception of his father was also accurate -- didn't mean that everyone else from there was. Heck, maybe they were, but she doubted they were all completely clean. All places had their crime on some level, even if it was just little things, like underage drinking and such.
Mel blinked, her eyebrows arching high. If she had bangs, they probably would have disappeared into them. "You.... ran into another of Cheri's textin' mates?" she asked, clearly surprised. "Tha's.... one helluva coincidence." She still seemed a bit shocked at the timing. "Oh, well.... huh. Have you met any more of them?" she asked, pausing, then looking curiously up at Lafayette. If Brian where there, he likely would have rolled his eyes; he knew Mel well enough, to know she liked to feel special. Most people only got that way around crushes or something, but she had some sort of... secret neediness that tended to come out with just about everyone. It was misleading, especially since it could differ between people, but he would have noticed that was what was going on here, and... resisted the temptation to slap her upside the head. Even if he was one of the only ones that could get away with that.
Mel looked at him curiously, considering outing that she knew, perhaps, a bit more than she'd let on. She smiled, deciding to be somewhat vague, while still suggesting towards it. "I meant, Cheri could always read it off to you, so you get all the details," she suggested. Not exactly transparent, but it suggested hse might know. Why else would she suggest it being read to him? Then again, his comment did insinuate something there. She smiled, giving him a reassuring shake, shrug, and then nod of her head. "Nope, not missin' a thing," she reassured him. Lafayette caught the sympathetic look but didn’t think much of it. He was confident in his belief, even if it was completely unfounded. Besides, there was plenty of crime in other parts of the world! He knew, he’d been… was… part of it. Probably actually best not to push that kind of talk, wasn’t it?
"It was!" He gave a grin, "She seemed nice enough… one of them… language peeps… learnin’ all them langos," he commented. He left out that she seemed to get his strine for the sake of the conversation; Mel already seemed surprised enough at all the coincidences which, thinking about it, was rather odd. "Mahbeh Cheri planned it all! Wouldn’ put it past her." She was clever enough to find numbers to randomly text and respond to, so… maybe she was clever enough to set up rendezvous with them as well.
Lafayette gave Mel a bit of a look as she suggested Cheri could read the texts off and tell all the details of them. He stared a long moment at her, a sort of awkwardly forced smile crossing his face as he gave her a sort of questioning look. "… I take it she dun told ya I can’ read, huh sheila?" He inquired point blank. He might’ve not been the brightest and he could tell that she was attempting to be… vague? But ultimately, even he knew no one would really suggest a pokemon do something that they should’ve been able to readily do for themselves. Like reading. He had a feeling she was trying to be … nice. Which wasn’t the first time he’d had someone do that but it was… annoying? Or maybe there was something else to it for him, he didn’t know.
"Bu’ tha’s good. Ain’ much for mumbo jumbo anyways," he joked, chuckling as he relaxed once more. Though, he did store away in the back of his mind to find out what all Cheri had texted and to who… just because she only said certain things to Mel didn’t mean she hadn’t babbled who knew what to others. Though… he had a feeling Juliean wouldn’t have lavished him with a vacation if that had happened.
He chuckled at the confusion on Mel’s face at his term, unable to stop the grin. It was… endearing in a way, how she asked about what he was saying, probably because he knew she was just probably guessing half of it. "Like an Ekans, sheila! It means…," he had to honestly stop and think about how to describe it, expression contorting a bit as he really reached. "… crazeh. Tha’s the word! Yeh got crazehs in yeh family?"
Noah, in the meantime, had been scoping the beach front for shells and in the process stumbled across something… odd. A weird little round thing that looked like... a black rock? But with little pink spikes jutting from its back. It was so weird and curiously, he picked it up into his paws and looked it over.
With a little chirp, he skipped his way over to Lafayette and Mel, interrupting the conversation briefly to hold up the strange little thing he’d found to try and get some insight. Lafayette blinked and stared down at him in annoyance, though that disappeared as he eyed the weird thing. "Wha’s tha’ mate? A rock?"

Mel blinked a few times at Lafayette's... description, of the woman. "You mean like... a linguist?" she guessed, honestly uncertain, yet awed, at this. Not so much Lala's lingo, but the coincidence of it all -- he had an accent, after all, and though it wasn't another language, it... almost was -- and how it all fit together. And just, she hadn't really met a linguist before. She relaxed some when Lafayette mentioned Cheri planning it, though her smile was a little tense. "Maybe. She does seem rather smart. And she did seem to want cotton candy-- maybe she hoped the woman would get her some, after talking to her about it?" she remarked thoughtfully. The pokemon seemed rather smart.... and perhaps stubborn, or at least, fixated. She'd been staring at Kiwi, alone, for... quite a while now...
Mel faltered under Lafayette's look. Ah... She could tell he'd caught onto that. She'd hoped it was harmless enough, but.... she had a feeling she'd messed up. Before he even spoke, she apologetically lowered her gaze down, her shoulders dropping. She gave a half-hearted, sorry smile and glanced up at him when he spoke the obvious. "... Yes," she admitted, straightening and folding her arms, "Sorry." She paused, shifted, then added, "Is it, like.... dyslexia?" Ever nosey, even when she probably really, really oughtn't be....
Mel listened curiously as Lala explained, patient as he took his time to think of the right way. She grinned when he came up with the word, though, and laughed out loud. Not just a short laugh-- boisterous, loud, and open. The sort you might expect to hear from some sort of hulky cartoon character, but feminized. She calmed herself down, and lifted a hand to cover her mouth, stifling the remaining laughter. "Well, my mum's a model who travels around, dad's a martial art instructor, cut like a body builder, complete other end of the spectrum, brother's a shut in computer nerd, and my sister..." Lafayette snapped his fingers as Mel said the word he’d been trying to find. "Tha’s it! Yeh got it sheila!" A grin crossed his face again. "Tha’s wha’ she called ‘erself. Sounded interestin’… bet it’s bloodeh hard. Learnin’ all the langos an’ stuff." He thought about it some, chuckling as Mel confirmed that Cheri might’ve had a hand in the whole thing. Yeah… yeah, he was inclined to believe that. She was a tricky one and if she’d been harassing more than one person for cotton candy and well, more bodies meant more chances to get what she wanted. Simple logic and math that he couldn’t fault her for trying. He took a quick gander at her as he thought, noting that she was indeed still staring at the Cybun in Mel’s arms. What was going on with that? She hadn’t broken eye contact either and that just caused him further confusion. Did she expect something to happen with the robot? Did she realize it was a robot?
Lafayette couldn’t help but give Mel a stern look as she admitted that yes, Cheri had revealed his inability to read. He was undeniably annoyed that she’d done that; it wasn’t the fuzzball’s business to inform others about that. He himself didn’t tell people; mostly because it wasn’t their damn business. He had to admit, he was a bit confused why she’d done such a thing anyways. Was it an accident? No… not likely. Or maybe? Who knew.
"Nothin’ ta’ be sorreh for sheila," Lafayette remarked, tone suggesting it was indeed alright to some degree. There was nothing he could do now and he wasn’t going to waste time denying it. He did look confused as she dug a little deeper. "What’chu talkin’ ‘bout? I ain’ dissin’ nothin’ sheila." Lafayette remarked clearly confused by the word she'd used. He’d never really heard that term before. "Jus’ ain’ a good reader. Nothin’ special."
Focusing in on the answers, Lafayette didn’t conceal his clear interest. A model? A fighter? A techie? And… a sister that sounded like she was crazy. "Sounds like a rippah of a fam’, Mello." He chuckled, musing over the thought. They didn’t sound too crazy, but it was certainly a unique cast; with siblings and everything. He kind of wondered what it was like to have siblings…
"Yeh get along with yeh sibs?" Might as well ask right? Like, that’s how you learned when you didn’t know. Of course, he had to address the whole Noah situation and had his attention there, watching as Mel knelt to poke at it. A pokemon? What pokemon looked like that?
"Is it…?" It didn’t look like a pokemon to him and he knelt down to get a better look. Noah was still holding it up, now proud that even Mel seemed to be taking an interest in his find. Lafayette took the odd thing though up in his hand, rotating it around and giving it a little squeeze. It was… squishy.
"Gross," he murmured and then blinked when he spotted what looked to be two little eye dots at the end with a little star looking symbol. He squinted and eyed that as he absently gave the oddity another unceremonious squeeze.
Which seemed to be enough to peeve the Pyukumuku off as Lafayette found white substance in the form of a small fist launching into his face and busting him right between the eyes. "AGH!" He shouted and fell back, violently tossing the thing away as he slammed down on his bottom. "Lil’ ********’ ratbag! Piece a’ shite- " Lafayette continued on, swearing up and down as he rubbed gingerly at the struck sore part. Noah was startled, catching the sea cucumber thing that was apparently a pokemon and staring in utter horror at his pissed off trainer. Well that was much the opposite of what he was hoping for. Cheri briefly turned her attention from the Cybun to observe Lafayette, clearly unimpressed with what had happened.

Mel wasn't sure whether to ask more about Lala's previous meeting with this linguist, though she was still curious. She decided to let the topic drop, for the time being, and instead focused on their other topics. "No, no, it's a reading thing. Its' like... the words rearrange themselves a bit, y'know? Like, when you're reading, the words don't appear as they should," she tried to explain. But, maybe he just hadn't had a good education? Or he just.... wasn't good at that. Honestly, she found herself sometimes sort of... dumbing down Lala in her mind, just because of how he was. So the idea that he just couldn't read well, sort of fit that. But, at the same time, he seemed a capable guy. Not as dumb as he seemed, and he was one hell of a conversationalist, so it wasn't like he was slow or anything. Which kinda contradicted that notion. She had a feeling it was more some sort of just, learning/reading thing, than it was a mental thing.
She smiled at the description. "That's... accurate, yeah," she remarked with a smirk of amusement. She blinked at the question, a little surprised, and dropped her hand to her side. "Oh, uh, yeah, I--" She had stopped when Noah came over, curious about the object, and allowing herself to get distracted from the conversation by it. She blinked when Lafayette took it and examined it. "I dunno, it looks kind of--" She stopped and her eyes went round when, suddenly, the thing attacked at another squeeze from Lafayette. She leaned back, but didn't really flinch, and watched as the man fell back. She quickly straightened up, though, and placed both hands firmly over her mouth. It soon became clear that she was trying hard not to laugh, though, as her shoulders started shaking. And then, she doubled over. Her eyes closed. She could barely even keep quiet, as she fell into a laughing fit. One of her pokeballs popped open as a curious Lucy escaped to investigate, looking quizzically up at her trainer as Mel tried to keep from just falling over, at this point. The monkey pokemon curiously swung over to investigate Lala, giving him a questioning look. "Mon?" she queried, while Mel, finally, managed to gasp out, "Sorry - Lala!" between laughs.

Lafayette made a face as he tried to formulate an understanding on what Mel was describing. He’d never heard it like that before and he had to think about it for a long moment. Gingerly he rubbed the area between his eyes which was now a healthy red welt and winced, eye twitching. He was caught off guard when he heard…. Laughing? Muffled laughing. What? He blinked and winced again, directing his gaze first to Lucy who had appeared form the blue, growling a little bit before focusing on Mel. She...was the one… laughing? He wasn’t sure how to feel about that. "Wha’ the hells so funneh?" He demanded defensively, wincing and glaring at Noah who still had the Pyukumuku in his hands. Immediately he was up on his feet, snatching the thing from his pokemon and promptly hurling it out to sea in a fit of anger. ******** that thing!
"Lil’ ********’… that hurt!" He snapped, glaring at Noah who looked away rather guiltily. Lafayette sighed, trying to poke the welt again and flinching. "Yeh yeh… ha ha sheila. G’d yeh got a laugh." Lafayette grumbled, looking rather dejected as he tried to soothe the pain.

Mel had caught Lafayette's reaction to his own ignorance, and she hadn't dismissed it. It was just that... everything that ensued, made it a bit hard to go back to it, or hang on to the serious undertone. She'd - maybe - bring it up at another point, if it seemed appropriate. She'd be happy to help him, if he was interested, in learning to read, or even just learning about his own condition. At the moment, though, she was almost anything but altruistic, except, perhaps, in her desperate attempts not to just fall over in hysterical laughter. For some reason, Lafayette's defensiveness only made it all the more funny, and soon she was doubled over so hard, she could rest her elbows on her legs-- and almost had to, at that point.
When he hurled the pokemon, that was it. She fell over laughing, one hand going back to keep herself from falling all the way back, and to catch herself from the short drop to the ground. It really shouldn't have been funny, especially not him throwing the pokemon into the sea, but it was one of those moments when you just couldn't stop laughing. Even when the joke was long gone, and it was clear you really, really should. Lucy seemed almost concerned at her trainer, and had even squeaked out a short "Mon!" when she fell, though whether it was out of concern or disapproval was unclear.
"I - I'm s - gasp - sorry!" Mel laughed out, still trying to cover her own laughter. Eventually, she managed to get control of herself, and tried to catch her breath, fanning her face to try and dry the tears of laughter that had formed at the corner of her eyes. "Arceus, I'm so sorry," she tried again, though there was still some laughter to her voice -- honestly, she just couldn't help it. She looked up at him, smiling apologetically. "Really, I don't mean to laugh," she continued sincerely, pushing herself up and climbing to her feet. She brushed herself off. "Are you alright?" She reached over, trying to brush his hand away to get a look at it. "C'mon, let's get you some ice or somethin'," she urged, picking Kiwi back up from where the cybunny had hopped away to avoid toppling when she'd fallen. She rubbed a hand over the pokemon's metal, but unfortunately, the sun had already warmed it up-- it wouldn't do much to cool the wound or reduce the swelling. "I'm sure the hotel can give us some," she insisted, grabbing for Lala's wrist to march him to the building. She.... sure did have a completely obliviousness to when she was taking charge of things, and whether it was exactly appropriate to do so....

Lafayette’s face went warm as Mel’s laughter went from semi-controlled to full on uncontrolled, his expression contorting into fierce agitation, the pain in his face the only thing keeping him from looking full on Primeape. Though when she fell over after he chucked the pokemon he just felt … confused. And embarrassed. Horribly so; what a wretched combination of emotions.
Noah looked a level of stunned as well, uncertain of what was so funny. He noted even Lucy looked concerned and so wondered if maybe some spores had slipped into the air to cause such a vicious response.
By the time Mel stopped, Lafayette was red in the face and looking distressed and peeved. He didn’t see anything funny about the situation. It was the second time in a month he’d been ******** assaulted by a pokemon and he was about ready to storm the sea and start crushing critters over it. But the laughing… that hurt. He wasn’t much for having an ego but… he didn’t know.
He just grumbled as Mel inquired if he was alright, wincing as she brushed his hand away to get a look at the wound. He didn’t say much as she retrieved her Cybun, grabbing his wrist briefly to try and start hauling their way towards the hotel. He took like a step or two before his anger flared and he snapped his wrist out of her grasp.
"Rack off sheila! I ain’ goin’," he huffed, tone seething. He was mad; probably unreasonably so. Cheri tilted her head a bit while Noah stepped up, gently tugging at Lafayette’s trunk leg to get his attention. It probably would’ve been in his best interest to not catch his trainer’s attention, but he felt bad. The Aussie’s attention snapped to look at the Dewott and immediately he exploded at the pokemon.
"Nick off, Noah! This is your ********’ fault!” Lafayette snapped as he all but slapped the Dewott’s paw off of him, not seeming a hint phased at the crestfallen look that overcame his pokemon’s face. "You ‘n yeh ********’ shells... a ********; hassle yeh nong."

Mel was surprised when Lafayette jerked away, but quickly lost that reaction in a exasperated look and a tilt of her head. "Oh Lala, c'mon," she chided lightly. She frowned, though, when he started snapping at his pokemon, swiftly stepping up to give him a shove just hard enough to get him to step back a bit. "Back off, Lala!" she snapped, her voice firm, but not loud, "It wasn't him who went 'n squeezed the thing, was it? Or poked or hurt it till it lashed out! You don' have to go 'n lash out at him, y'know." She stood with her shoulders back, nothing hesitant about her now.
"Now come on," she insisted, holding out a hand, more in a gesture than expectation of him giving her his, "Let's get you some ice. There's no use letting your face swell up like a quilfish." Arceus, he really could be stubborn sometimes, couldn't he?

Lafayette was caught off guard when Mel intervened, shoving him back and snapping at him in retaliation. He stumbled a few steps, catching himself from falling back in the process. The Aussie gave a wide-eyed stare as he was reprimanded for going off on his pokemon. Anyone else would’ve realized they were in the wrong and felt foolish.
Not Lafayette though. He just had to be that guy. Immediately, his attitude flared up again and he smacked the offered hand away before stepping forward and shoving Mel back. "YOU rack off, sheila! He ought’a be ********’ smarta’ and know a pokie when he sees it!" He snapped back. He was just observing it, he didn’t know it was a pokemon! Noah should’ve known! And that was the failed logic that he was sticking too. If he couldn’t rely on his pokemon not to get him attacked then what good where they?
With a growl, he took a step back and turned, looking ready to storm off. Noah stepped near once again, trying to plead the man not to leave only to promptly be shoved away again with another growl. "Nick. Off. Noah." Seriously, he was going to get punched if he kept trying.

Mel's eyebrows shot up when Lafayette shoved her back, but she hardly seemed phased. In fact, she gave a scoffing laugh as she got her footing, almost amused despite how caught off guard she was. Though, she shouldn't have been. Even she knew, Lafayette certainly seemed the sort to ignore any sort of gender expectations. And she was fine with that -- grateful, even -- but she could return the favor. There was certainly no "special treatment" going on here on her end, either.
"Oh, so you can be an idiot, but he can't?" she drawled sarcastically, crossing her arms over her chest to give him a look. Kiwi was now on the sand again, having been set down after the shove (likely in preparation for more retaliation). It simply stared at the scene that was going on, watching curiously, observing... learning. Perhaps things it oughtn't be learning, but still.
Mel seemed to pick up on the danger Noah was in, and frowned, before sweeping over and plucking the dewott up, and tucking him under one arm, regardless of his personal preference on it. Instead of arguing, she just shot Lala a terrible glare, one that voiced her disapproval just as loud as any more chiding she could have given him. She obviously wasn't about to back down on this, either.
