Crafter // Stands Impression Candidate

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Name: M'deck
Age: 21
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Aromantic Bisexual
Craft: Healer
Rank: Journeyman (Trauma and Superficial surgeries)
Location: High Reaches Weyr

Physical Description:
Close-cropped dark-auburn hair, muddy-grey eyes. Longish, narrow face most commonly seen deadpan, frowning in concentration or annoyance, and rarely smiling (usually at his brother, adopted daughter, or some really tasty food). Tall, long-muscled, conscious of staying in shape. When weather and Thread permit, he goes for a run around the lake in early morning to get his mind going. Otherwise it's done inside. Very prone to freckling in the sun, he has many freckles mostly on his face, neck and shoulders, top of the thighs, etc. from jogging in the summer. Naturally they begin to disappear as soon as the snow starts.

About clothing-- who cares? Function over fashion. Sleeveless shirts and shorts in the summer when it's hot. Boots in the muck. Fur and layers in the snow. Inside, he typically wears a plain leather vest and a shirt with the poofy sleeves with tight gauntlets to keep his forearms clean. He tries to wear lavender somewhere on his person so that a casual (or frantic) observer can identify that he is a Healer. Reading glasses are worn inside. It all looks good on him. Such a shame it's also wasted on him!

Personality:
His Myers-Briggs profile would be INTJ (introvert intuitive thinking judging), The Intellectuals: Strategist. He is introverted and socially awkward, but intuitive of the needs of his patients. He does a lot more thinking than talking, but tact is especially difficult for him and is often abandoned in favor of saving everyone that extra time. He is quick to judge a situation in just a few seconds or moments, but while he is very successful (most of the time) with patients' physical needs, he has trouble relating with repercussions mentally and emotionally. That is where his brother comes in anyway.

He has a particularly stubborn way with glasses. It may be argued that his eyesight correlates with his studies, as even in the dining hall, one can find him in those reading glasses pouring over scrolls and books. He definitely needs them for close-range objects. Like those moving forms a dragonlength away called people. But he can see a group of friends or individual across the hall and accurately guess the weave of their silks and identify who did the tooling on their new leather boots. His use for them usually begins indoors and ends outdoors. And it is arguable that he would need glasses were he to Impress. But one thing he will tell you is that sort of thing is of the utmost importance; of course he would wear them, until he can get a set of prescription goggles.

He loves to dance. About the only times one will see him out mingling, besides at meals, is when dancing is involved. This is one of those few times he stops thinking about his craft or how awkward he feels in public and focuses only on himself and the music. Of course, he tries not to think of all the trouble one can get into at a dance.

He loves baked goods. The way to his heart will probably be through his stomach.

Positive Traits
~ Conceptual, Insightful, Open-minded. When presented with a problem, he views it as a puzzle, challenge, or assignment. Thus separated from it, he can look at it in broader terms.
~ Logical. He is capable of thinking abstractly, placing people on a chess board, so to speak. It allows him to think of the problem as opposed to the emotions others might feel, and that he might feel. It can be a bit of a problem when he tries to assign logical thought to people-problems, and is sometimes suprised by their responses.
~ Independent, Relentless. He can work on his own without supervision, acknowledgement, or appreciation to thrive.
~ Introspective. He often thinks from his own perspective and emotions to try to figure out the people closest to him or who affect his life the most, as well as or people-related aspects of a puzzle. This is probably the limit of his empathy, which given his other traits would be quite limited.

Negative
~ Critical, Quick to judge a situation in extremes. In this he can look to the worst case scenario before looking at the best, but may dwell on the worst inappropriately, leading to poor outlook in the situation, or his mood in general.
~ Perfectionist, Obsessive, Expects excellence in himself and others. Superficially these may seem like positive traits, and they can be. But people annoy him: they are lazy and at the same time expect preferential treatment. If they don't earn something through merit, he is unlikely to give him a millimeter, let alone an inch.
~ Socially awkward, Emotionally detached. He does try to "let his hair down" and enjoy the presence of others, but as soon as he opens his mouth his awkwardness is revealed. Even if he is in a good mood he may seem pissy to those unfamiliar with his sharp words and personality quirks. In mixed company he prefers to keep his mouth shut and hide in a book or his studies.

History:
Family:
- Zandesik (57) and Cynmen (48 ), Parents (minor Holders, Tillek region, FarmerCraft, High Reaches Weyr)
- Spasek (29), eldest brother (Harper, voice training, lute)
- Zendysk (27), elder brother (heir)
- Cynsizk (25), elder sister (Tailor; Knitting)
- Mennick (22), elder brother (Mindhealer, Thread trauma)
- Cynchie (17), younger sister (Baker)
- Silvina (Silvie) (3), adopted daughter (played by Thaliawen)

Mennick and Maddeck grew up in a small hold in the Tillek region that specializes in terraced farming and baking. It was small, but it was his parents' hold, and it had been carved out of the mountain itself by their ancestors. Beholden to High Reaches Weyr, a matter of great pride to the family, the hold nevertheless was capable of only a modest tithe. In the care of the sturdy, hardworking parents named Zandesik and Cynmen, Mennick and Maddeck enjoyed a difficult but well-rounded childhood.

Mennick witnessed his eldest brother Spasek sent away for "talking too much," which deeply upset Mennick, especially when Maddeck (who was not there when it happened) rationalized that Spasek must be lazy. It wasn't until Turns later that he learned that Spasek had indeed talked so much that he developed laryngitis and began to play his lute in earnest to fill in the "silence." He was already skilled enough to gain entry into the HarperHall, where he was treated and studied under a voice coach. He decided to stay and Master in the subject of Voice!

This left the next brother in line to inherit the Hold. An easygoing but hard-working son, Zendysk was happy take up that mantle. Cynsizk, the eldest sister, was already talented in Knitting and went off to WeaverCraftHall to expand her study to include Tailoring. She made sure that little Mennick understood that it was her choice, that she loved her family, and that she would come back home someday soon. Thus she averted, for Mennick, any damage that Maddeck's cynicism might have on her departure. Finally, the youngest sister, Cynchie, had decided as a little girl that she would stay and become a Baker under their Journeywoman mother's tutelage.

The younger of two stair-steppers, he and his brother were always together. They played games together. They talked about many things together, like what they wanted to be when they grew up. Both showed an affinity for healing from a very young age, but in very different areas. While Mennick was an empathic person and preferred to work with people, Maddeck was interested in how things worked mechanically. An example of this might be watching how muscles move when an arm bends or twists. In games, he always washed and wrapped wounds. He practiced on himself and his brother, or on dolls (little girls either loved it or hated it).

As soon as they were old enough, Mennick 11 and Maddeck 10 turns, they begged to be sent off to learn their craft at the Healer Hall, Fort Hold. The brothers had heard the stories of Threadfall, and how High Reaches Weyr has carried on the tradition. Impressionable, dreamy-eyed, they must have thought something like, "Wouldn't it be great if we could treat those riders?" The romance of Thread, riders injured in the process of saving the world. They knew these were tales woven by the harpers who spun old tales to pass the time. But it did not change their passion for the craft.

Then, as their specific interests became more apparent, Mennick for healing the mind and Maddeck for healing the body, they had shown great potential and were allowed to study under someone of their choice. Their mentors immediately recognized their love for dragons and desire to learn in that bustling atmosphere of the Weyr. So at the ages of 13 (Mennick) and 12 (Maddeck) they were sent all the way to High Reaches Weyr (instead of Fort), near their ancestral home, to continue their apprenticeships. At present time, even though he has walked the tables, Maddeck currently studies under one of the very competent Weyr Surgeons.

Maddeck's area of expertise often brings him out on the Sands during a hatching, one of those in Healer's Purple instead of Candidate's White. He tries to be there to witness some of the miracles of Pern. Riders and dragons are part of his study, after all. His goal is to become a Master one day, so that he can pass on what he has learned to other healers. Despite his close proximity to the Sands and Weyrlings, he has no intention of Impressing, though he knows it is possible. If he Impresses, he will still continue on as planned, but with his focus on the rider's point of view.

A year or two ago his brother found himself a little tag-along in the form of a weyrbrat toddler. Her noise bothered him while he was studying, and in his irritation he called her "Silvie" for silver, referring to "silver strands of Thread." The name stuck, somehow. Much more recently, he can't even bring himself to think about this horrible lapse of judgment, and insists he was referring to something else entirely. Like how the word, 'sylvan,' refers to trees and forests. Nevermind that Mennick thought of it first.

Other:
Maddy, nickname by Silvina
M'deck, if he Impresses

Candidate Specific Questions
Do you want them to have an official Search RP? No, I'm not opposed to unwanted searches though!
Do you understand they will age every passing year regardless if you're there to RP the or not? Yes
Do you want them to have a possible Stands Impression? Yes
- - - > Please keep in mind that Stands Impressions are very rare. This means that not everybody will get an opportunity to have a surprise Impression, and you lower your chances of being picked by a dragonet. Given the character is not ICly an official Candidate, they will need a reason to be at the Weyr of their choice long-term, or at least for every Hatching.

Hey Melomar,

As a Candidate we like to have a detailed personality. While I can kind of pick out his negative traits, I'm floundering finding good qualities. Do you think you could name a few?

Also, what is this brother complex you mention?

Last but not least, were these two boys Weyrbred or did they grow up in another Hold? If they were Holdbred I think you should mention which Hold (either make up a minor Hold or pick one of the Majors). It's fine to have them study a particular craft -- after becoming a Journeyman he could have simply taken up a position at the Weyr to continue his work.

Also, while Thread was considered defeated, it was not forgotten. Harpers still sing the stories and teaching songs; records still have the history of Threadfall. High Reaches is particularly vocal about Thread's return so it's very easy to hear stories while in their territory. So it would have been easy to have someone pass on stories.

Though, given it's been about 1000 Turns, some of it's likely been turned more into myth and legend. So however you want them to have heard the stories -- a retired Harper, an old, old Uncle who liked to entertain children with old stories, a local rider who just liked to talk up a dragons old livelihood -- there are lots of ways. Heck, some men and women on Pern are probably glad Thread returned since it gives dragons a purpose once again.
