Match was out in somewhat unfamiliar territory. A few days back, he had brought a particular leaf to one of the herb-dealers whom he dealt with -- one of the few who didn’t act nervous around him, and didn’t mind chatting a bit. Even if the chatter was somewhat one-sided, what with Match mostly communicating by nods and hums. After a few false starts, the woman figured out that he wanted to know where he might be able to find more of it… and directed him here. She must have known what he was doing. The plant -- greenhew, it was called in the markets -- was hard to find, but after a few hours of searching he had been able to dig up three.

He had just found a fourth when the big janarim travelling alongside him caught a whiff of something interesting. Teymaw’s scaled neck shot up, his nostrils flaring.

Matchitemin looked up as well. His sense of smell was acute, for an earthling… but he couldn’t pick up anything particularly unusual. It smelled like jungle, maybe with some settlement not far off (a hint of wood-smoke and cooking-oil). Whatever it was that had attracted Tey’s attention, it might well be something of particular interest to a janarim.

Indeed, the animal let out a questioning call, unlike one that Match had ever heard him make. If he had to guess… he’d figure that maybe he was calling to another of his kind. But surely there weren’t every many janarim in Yael, even now?

It had taken a lot of work and more than a few harrowing moments but Detraeus had finally been 'tamed' enough to be taken out of his pen and walked. He needed to build up his stamina, get used to the environment of Yael, and be controllable by leash if he was to be of any use to a potential customer, and so Yisette had ordered Malta - who had somehow become his main caretaker and trainer - to take the great big deathbeast for a walk in the swamp.

So far, so good. It had taken some doing, but he was moving along as she wanted - suspiciously, with obvious distaste for the wet, the leash, and everything around him, but moving. "You're doing great..." she said to him, feeding him a meat scrap as a treat, "You're such a good boy..." he snorted - he wasn't that good of a creature, to be honest, but relative to the titanic, destructive monster he had been... he was pretty good.

They walked a little more, Malta enjoying the 'silence' of his company. It was nice to be away from all the people. Of course, this was the jungle. There was no civilization in sight. She was out of her element - if she'd ever had one to begin with. But with an animal by her side, she felt almost as at-home as she had in the orphanage. She sighed. This is nice...

Suddenly, she felt a change in her companion, a sudden rippling attentiveness. He stopped, ignoring her tugs on the leash as he sniffed the air from side to side, trying to peer over the gloom of the trees. A eerily familiar sound echoed through the trees - a beast's voice. Detraeus rumbled, as if in reply and, after a moment's listening, began to move towards the jungle off of the road.

"Det, no!" she implored him, trying to take control with the leash, but he was having none of it. He pulled her along - just gently enough that he didn't hurt her, but with enough force that she had to follow. "Stop!" Suddenly, she was away from the relative safety and familiarity of the road and surrounded by trees, at the whim of a creature she could not let go of.

Now she was, really and truly, out of her element.

Teymaw held his gaze on the forest. Matchitemin, ever patient and maybe just a little bit curious, stood stock-still and listened for movement. Sure enough, within moments he could hear something big coming in from the direction of the swamp. It wasn't even trying to be quiet -- it's quadruple footsteps squelched and splashed like it wasn't used to the damp ground in the slightest. Maybe it was another janarim, after all?

His suspicions were soon confirmed. He glimpsed the familiar shape of a horned head in amongst the trees, and that characteristic swing of an armoured tail. Teymaw let out another bellow.

When the new beast broke through the last row of trees to stand on the bank of porous rock, Matchitemin took a good long look at it. It was big and scarred -- larger than Teymaw even, a fact that the janarim seemed aware of, keeping his head low in something like a sign of submission (although his teeth were bared, a hint that he would be more than willing to fight if things got ugly). Match gave the beast a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

About then, he noticed that the other janarim had a leash around his neck. He snorted out a laugh, then followed the length of the leash to the hands of a portly yaeli girl.

"Hm." He hummed, by way of greeting. She didn't look very pleased to be out here.

"Det... Det!" the last one was more of a sudden sharp intake of breath as she spotted the other janarim. She could feel Detraeus's tension vibrate through the leash as he sized up the other janarim, making a low rumble that could almost be a growl. Or was it something else.

After a moment where no-one seemed to be tearing at the other's throats, Malta ventured to speak. "H-hi." she said, wariness drying her throat and tongue into rasps, "I didn't know there was, uh... another janarim on Y-yael..." She was so used to there being just one, at all, ever. Of course someone else might import them. Of course.
