When everything turns to black, You don't know where to go... You need something to justify your soul. Silence is broken, confidence is gone; Everything you're holding onto falls. FA N C H O N M A R I E C O H E N Professor of DADA │ Muggleborn │ Haitian
Fanchon sat in her very comfortable chair, stroking Jacques, her cat, curled up in her lap, as though she were a Bond villain, and gave the room one final once over. She had enough tables and chairs to fit everyone, she'd made sure the room was spotless, in case anyone had any dust allergies, and she'd tried to make it.... if not quite welcoming, at least slightly less intimidating, although that was a bit difficult when the decor of the room literally included a giant skeleton of some magical beast suspended above the class. Ah well. They'd have to get used to Hogwarts's quirks at some point, and DADA was a notoriously challenging class, although not quite to the level of say, Transfiguration or Potions. However, it was extremely important, and if she had her way, she'd make it mandatory for all seven years. Alas, she could not have her way, so she only had five years to drill as much knowledge as possible through their hairy little heads. If she could make sure all of them could cast a proper shield charm, patronus, disarm someone, and defeat a boggart, she'd be happy. It would raise their life expectancy significantly. As the fifth years filtered into the room, she observed them stoically, not rising from her seat (and disturbing Jacques' nap) until everyone had taken their seats and were (mostly) quiet. "Bonjou. Good morning," she translated calmly, confident that her accent, while strong, was not an excuse for them to not listen. "I am Fanchon Cohen, and I am responsible for ensuring that all of you can recognize dark magic, and properly defend yourselves against it. My rules are written on the board. Follow them, don't follow them, it's your choice. This class is largely about choices. I'm here to demonstrate to you how to make good ones." Fanchon scanned the class for a moment, before smirking just the tiniest bit. "Ten house points to whoever can demonstrate a proper stunning spell and send it my way." All the people selling truths on every corner now- They wait until the fear has knocked you down. All the rules are changing now; you're living in sin... Everything around you is caving in; all you're holding onto- Is slipping like water through your hands.

Fianna Grey Gryffindor │ Fifth Year │ Fifteen Years Old │ Single
As she planning to become a Witch Watcher after graduating from school, Fianna took her DADA studies very seriously. Reluctantly, she decided to get back into the Dueling Club this year so she could get in extra Dark Arts practice before she took the OWL. After studying the materials over the summer she hoped she was ready to handle the inevitable review of previously studied material. What she wasn't prepared for was the new instructor, or being invited to target her with a spell.
Deciding she should be brave and take up the challenge, Fianna volunteered to go first. Once she was sure she wouldn't catch the professor unprepared, Fianna drew her wand, bowed gracefully, as her cousin had taught her to do, before holding her wand in an en-garde position. Gesturing with a straight-line motion, she stated calmly, "Stupefy!" and an azure bolt of light was launched from the tip of her wand...
Turn your magic on, to me she'd say "Everything you wants a dream away We are legends, every day" That's what she told me
Turn your magic on, to me she'd say "Everything you wants a dream away Under this pressure, under this weight We are diamonds"

Fanchon stood at the front of the room, waiting patiently as the fifth years filed in and took their seats, before starting her lecture. "The shield charm is one of the most important spells you will ever learn as a witch or wizard, so any nonsense, and I'll be handing out detentions like sweets, is that clear?" She studied them for a moment, before continuing. "You'd be shocked at the number of adult witches and wizards who still cannot properly cast this spell. I have no idea why you wouldn't practice it frequently, as it protects against every spell we know of, besides, of course, the Killing Curse. It also deflects objects, and can be cast on both people and entire areas. It often causes spells that bounce off the shield to ricochet or backfire, so if you see someone use it, I would get out of the area as soon as possible." The Haitian woman smiled grimly.
"The Shield Charm gives off no light, and is invisible, except when being hit with other spells. There are several more advanced variations of it, but we will be learning the simplest version. Someone fire off a spell at me, please." Fanchon waited impatiently until a rather timid 'expelliarmus' was heard, and slashed downward with her wand, "Pro-TAY-goh.". The weak disarming charm bounced off the shield harmlessly. "I'm just going to try to disarm you, one by one, so let's see those shields, then. Remember, downward slash." All the people selling truths on every corner now- They wait until the fear has knocked you down. All the rules are changing now; you're living in sin... Everything around you is caving in; all you're holding onto- Is slipping like water through your hands.

Fanchon sat in her chair, Jacques asleep in her lap, as the fifth years came in. "Bonjou," she said dryly, from her position. "Today you'll be learning the Oppugno Jinx. It's very simple to learn and even simpler to cast, but since I don't want anyone getting any concussions, please clear your desks of everything but the stack of papers I put on each one." With a small groan she heaved the cat off her lap and onto the floor, while he meowed in indignation. "Oh-PUG-noh," she said calmly, pointing her wand at her desk, and the papers scattered across it flew up in a swirling mini-storm, before finally drifting back down. "The purpose of this spell is to attack someone else with objects, such as papers, pebbles from the ground, etc. It's helpful when you're being pursued, because all you need to do is point. I'd like to see a lot of papers in the air, starting.... now." All the people selling truths on every corner now- They wait until the fear has knocked you down. Cause you don't know me, I don't know you So don't approach me, I won't approach you And don't insult me, I won't insult you Cause you don't know what I will or I won't do XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 15. | Muggleborn | Slytherin Fifth Year| Prefect ✕ ✖ ✗✘ Wren walked into the classroom having gotten used to his new professor's very Bond Villian-esqe setting as she waited for class to start. Maybe next year she'd get one of those overtly large rotating chairs. It'd certainly scare the pants off some of the younger years. He took his seat off to the side away from his classmates, as per usual, and got out his stuff to take his notes. Defense was one of his better classes because it was a lot easier to comprehend. Someone came after you, defend yourself, case closed. Charms was more annoying than useful and God don't even get him started on Transfiguration. He didn't have to wait long before the lesson began and was shown the jinx they would be learning that day. Personally he thought the idea was for a more dramatic duel than a backalley bar fight but hey, as long as he got a decent grade for it what did he care? He pointed his wand at the papers on his desk and said, "Oppugno!" He might've put just a tad more force into it since he sent his papers scattering rather than just in a wind storm. s**t. He did a quick accio and summoned the papers back to him and placed them back on the desk. This time, Wren tried to focus more on making the papers float rather than a friggen hurricane. "Oppugno!" This time the papers made a small aerie swivel in front of him before the came floating back down. Still didn't see a point, but at least he could do it. Make no mistake, I'm the Golden State heavyweight Bein underrated gave me time to create it Can you relate? I renovate, straight out the gate Carried my weight, but seem to receive nothin but hate

Aria hopped into the seat next to Fianna, flashed a bright smile at her friend and started to gather her notes but stopped when she realized there was nothing on the board for her to copy. She took out her wand instead then cleaned off her desk as instructed. Determined to see this charm work on the first try, she pointed her wand out and said, ”Oh-PUG-noh!” White paper flurried like snow.

She wasn’t great but she wasn’t horrible either. Taking a seat she took this seriously. She wanted to be able to use it properly. She hoped she never needed it but still. Professor Cohen had a point. Taking notes she prepared mentally for trying the spell. Watching the demonstration she was sure that she could get it to work. It worried her that you wouldn’t know it worked until something hit it.
Richard on the other hand was pretty good at defense. It wasn’t his best class but that was okay. Although, he was pretty tired what with class being at eight in the morning... Taking his notes, the red haired Gryffindor didn’t worry about what was about to come down the pipe. Why worry about something that was just practice right? That’s how Richard saw it. They were in class to learn and he had time to practice it. Watching the demonstration himself he didn’t know who the brave one was that aimed a spell for Professor Cohen. Then again she gave them permission.
Shrugging at it Richard got into line with his classmates. Walking up he waited for Professor Cohen to try disarming him. “Pro-TAY-goh.” He said giving a downward slash. It was delayed but he narrowly blocked the shot. Very narrow… maybe he was too lax. “That was close…” He muttered with a sigh of relief. Saio went after Richard. “Pro-TAY-goh!” She called out moving her wand in the downward slash and deflected the disarming charm. That worked. ‘Thank goodness…’ Saio thought as she left her stop in line.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Peter didn't enjoy the defense class as much as he'd thought. The professor wasn't bad, even though she always did that thing with her creepy cat and had odd tastes in decor, but the subject matter didn't appeal to him, although he could understand its usefulness. He was embarrassingly late to the first class but he apologised and took his seat. After listening to her usual beginning of the year spiel, Professor Cohen asked someone to come up and cast a stunning spell and unable to resist the chance to show off, Peter raised his hand then stepped forward and raised his wand. "Stupefy!" A red light shot out of his wand aimed at the professor and Peter smirked at his successful casting.
