He'd been quiet since they'd entered the locker room to change, and continued to be so as they made their way out into the gym itself, eyes a little wide, and ears a bit less perky than usual for him, least until Zaire had leaned in to n** at the closet one. It flicked, and Jory turned his head to blink up at the taller boil. "What?" Spookies? He frowned briefly, realizing he'd missed the first part of what Zaire had said.
"No, I'm ready." He thought he was ready, anyways. Enough to try, at least. He didn't want to have to always depend on Zaire or anyone else to keep himself. He wanted to be able to defend himself if he needed to.
Reaching over, he laced his fingers with Zaire's. "If it gets to be too much, I'll say something."

"I will," he said again, flashing Zaire what he hoped was an reassuring smile. At the very least,, he could assure the larger boil that he'd let it be known when he reached his physical limits. He might not be one for speaking up often, but he also really disliked the idea of getting hurt, or worse, dissipating over a spar. This was about getting better, not pride.
So he waited until Zaire had stepped a little away, and he moved his feet like he'd been told to, spreading out his balance, and bent his knees just so. The stance wasn't pretty, but it was more or less what it was supposed to be, and that was the point.
When he was ready, unsure features hardened with determination, and gave a little nod. "Ok, I'm ready."

It wasn't exactly expected, since they hadn't tried this before, but it took a second for the larger monster to swing that heavy tail around, and that was enough time for the smaller boil to react to it. Jumping back quickly enough to avoid being winded. It hit, but not nearly as hard as it should have.
"I didn't know you could move that quickly unless food was involved," he teased, flashing a grin that was lost somewhere between bashful and confident. Loop-sided and a little goofy.
Thin and muscled, Jory had the benefit of agility on his side, and he was going to try to use it. He didn't like the idea of trying to hurt his boilfriend, but this was good practice, and Jory needed to just turn off that part of his mind for a little while. Baby blues hardening, he planted bare feet against the ground and kicked off, rushing at Zaire with claws up to swipe at the big monster's arms.

Jory jumped back away from the swing of his tail, fortunately not far enough. The large appendage landed a hit to the smaller male monster as it completed its motion. Smacking into body with a sting no doubt, Zaire pulled it back, letting it freely rest behind body. Waiting as Jory caught up to the moment and decided that taunting would be a good first move, which admittedly did impress Zaire enough for a small brief smirk to flicker past lips.
"Usually true, but then you always light a fire for me...don't you?" He teased back, flashing a toothy grin that aimed to devour that little shine of confidence in Jory and put him back into place. Promising as it was to see, they had a standing together that Zaire liked.
Zaire kept his stance wide as Jory slid back into the spar, those hardened baby blues brought up the painful memory of the hunter they had ran into. That was all it took for Zaire to turn serious, he was doing this for him, even though deep down he felt that Jory wasn't built for fighting. All he needed the other to do though was try with no holding back.
Eyes stayed on the rocketing monster, arms going up in defense and taking the claws straight on. "Good.." Praise couldn't help but fall for the attack but it was almost mockingly saying that while it was good, it wasn't good enough. It stung, sure, but still gave Zaire a counter. A leg took advantage of the monsters close proximity and stuck out hard. Aiming to silently let the other boil know that Zaire wasn't exactly a monster you wanted to have that close to you in battle, hits landed hard and when close all the harder.
