All around her she saw rocks protruding from the earth and drift wood stretching their bare branches into the sky, twisting like emaciated creatures frozen in agony.
Through Your Eyes stared at this barren landscape, her face stony. She was the only living thing on this beach beside the odd crab scuttling around and the birds that she had followed. They, unlike everything else here, were full of life. Some were frolicking in the water, squawking and flapping their large grey wings at each other. Others were hovering in the air, looking down at the water to find fish she could not see. Sometimes a few would dive into the water and resurface, not always victorious.
She wasn’t sure why she had followed them except that it seemed like something to do, something to occupy her thoughts and give her some sort of direction. She had been listless since that dream, everything an open wound, tender to the world.
It was an unfamiliar feeling.
She thought that she could just get over it by going through the motions of living the life she was used to living, saying the things she had always said and thinking the thoughts she had always thought.
It was supposed to be easy. She had never been the type to dwell or wallow; she had been stronger than that.
She wanted to laugh at herself, but even that was too much right now.
