    general information

Name: Pencymurl (Just Pency, pls; P'url for those that knew him at HR)
        Age: 28
        Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual and kinda lazy, especially since his dragon chases anything pretty with four legs
        Weyr: Western
        Rider Rank: Wingrider
        Previous Rank/Craft: Street rat Miner/Thief
Physical Description: Even at 5'9" he appears like a scrawny, overgrown child who never quite filled into his own body, with gaunt, pale blue eyes, long fingers, and a slight hunch to his shoulders as if to avoid drawing attention to himself. His hair is a mousy brown, short, and untidy even if he takes a comb to it, and his ears stick out more than usual. There's the beginnings of facial hair, but he keeps it short or scraggy at best. All in all Pency looks like he's always tired, physically and emotionally, though he gets through each sevenday just fine.

    personality

        positive: adaptable, easy-going, sympathetic
        negative: complacent, suspicious, cowardly
Pency is a bluerider, and he knows what most people think of them as: middling, right? In the center of the hierarchy, above the nimble but quickly tired whites and greens, below the larger and long lasting browns and bronzes. And that's perfectly fine with him: he doesn't want extra responsibility. He's afraid of his own job as is some days, especially now that Thread is actually back. He's also afraid of felines and used to be jumpy if anyone so much as looked at him ominously. He's gotten better, though. Honest!

Pency is just, well...a do-gooder. Not a heroic, save the children from the burning farmhouse type, but someone who would go join the bucket brigade after he's had time to grab his boots and assess if it can even be saved. He has a kind heart but an antsy approach to others because of it, because he's keenly aware that the world is Not Good Sometimes, and he's been taken advantage of before. And sometimes that makes him question even little things, like people doing him a favor, or saying a kind word. There's always a motive behind it, right? He's a nobody after all, what do they want with him? Pency keeps tabs on his debts, no matter how minor or who owes whom, so surely everyone else does as well.

He knows he's painfully average, and he's settled for it years ago. Hell, the most interesting thing about Pency is that he used to snatch things for a living, and that's hardly notable when you grow up around other needy families who actually joined the courtesans guild, unlike him. It does mean that he tends to hoard, whether it's food, clothing, money, or another's attention. Shards, but he's love-starved; it can turn him into that scruffy street cat that doesn't leave you alone once you've fed it once. At a distance, mind you, because even someone like him can have a sense of pride.

Mild-mannered and quiet, it's rare to hear a complaint come out of him; he'll do what has to be done unless it's really, really difficult. Or scary. Pency's ire is hard to rouse, and while it isn't a bright fire, it's a long smoldering one. He can be incredibly petty or incredibly helpful depending on how he's been treated. For the most part, though, Pency tries to get along with everyone; it just makes life easier, and he's too tired to try and make mountains from molehills. Just...don't put him in the spotlight. He'll freeze and blank out and stammer if caught off guard. Let him stay in his happy little nook of Nothing Super Important Happening Here and he'll be content with it.

      • While Pency barely considers it "interesting", he likes poetry and keeps his own amateurish lines in the same black book he keeps his debts penned
      • Due to his dragon's love of the water, he's often found near the lake or ocean when he's out of the weyr. Fishing has become a semi-hobby because of it.

    history

Pencymurl was born in downtown Nabol and knew very little beyond the mines for most of his childhood. He never made an effort to distinguish himself and in fact often tried to hide among the grime-riddled workers, happy to just make it through the day and bring home some coin so that dad's gambling didn't put them in further debt. On his more selfish days, he forced himself to learn how to pickpocket and got decent enough at it to avoid getting more than one brand on him for being a thief. Eventually a small coalition was formed among the older children of that mine, where he was content to be someone's minion so long as it meant his life had a plan and the weight of solo work was no longer on his shoulders.

A Searchrider plucked several of them up a few turns later, and Pency found himself at High Reaches. It was a nice enough place, honestly, and the fact that he wasn't much better than a drudge as a Candidate never ruffled his feathers either. He continued to send marks to his family back in Nabol and kept regular contact with letters to his mother, though the situation never really got better. It was why when Rekamuth Impressed to him, it was such a bright spot in his life: maybe Pency, now P'murl, could do some more around the weyr and in turn improve his family's plight.

The problem was, now he was expected to fly. And as a creature used to the darkness and surrounding rock of the mines, it terrified him. Add to it a younger Rekamuth's lazier tendencies, and soon the pair found themselves not only in trouble, but in more remedial classes than other weyrlings ought to be in. Eventually he opted to transfer to Western to avoid the continual disappointment he was at High Reaches, though he took with him the browbeaten color-bias he had come to know and fit himself into. And for a while, life was just...okay.

So why did Thread have to come back? Now death is back on the list of s**t that can actually happen. And now he has to remember every minute detail of the firebreathing and stone handling and...Sheesh. He and Rekamuth are up to it now, with the worst of their personalities having been mellowed over the turns, but it doesn't mean there isn't still some apprehension about the whole affair.

    the dragon

        Name: Rekamuth
Inspo: A kamuy is a spiritual or divine being in Ainu mythology, a term denoting a supernatural entity composed of or possessing spiritual energy. Repun Kamuy in particular was a god of the sea who was usually depicted as an orca; in other instances, he is a carefree, somewhat mischievous young man armed with a harpoon. Repun Kamuy often shares the food from the ocean with friends and followers. When rumors reached him of a village he provided with food butchering his kill with improper rituals, he merely laughed and said that it was a gift and they can use it as they wish. Later, he passed by and saw that the village had in fact followed the proper rituals, moving him to promise that the sea would always protect them from famine.
        Age: 10
        Color: Blue
        Size: 30'
Physical Description: Average in most respects save for the slightly above average length, Rekamuth's most prominent feature is his impressive wingspan, which seems large for a blue. This allows him to sail and soar with seemingly little effort, though he's not one to really take sharp turns or alter course for anything short of Thread itself. His hide is also usually quite shiny, letting his speckled coloration seem to sparkle with its own light as he moves.
Personality: “Laissez les bon temps rouler.” Let the good times roll.

Rekamuth, much like his rider, is pretty content with his lot in life. He gets to chase the pretty things, comfort the losers afterward, and whine to a sympathetic rider about this or that. He's amicable and easy-going, not one to let a bad thing or problem stick around for long; why spend so much energy worrying when you can fly over the water and marvel at your own beautiful visage?

Sometimes people (and dragons) need that reminder, so he might play a small prank every once in a while to lighten things up. Sure, it's harder with Thread back, but he likes to think of it as a particularly annoying weather phenomena they have to deal with rather than the return of an old enemy when it should have been dealt with. You can still flirt, sun by the beach, and eat the good parts of meat in spite of it, right?

Rekamuth is Pency's optimism given more strength and physical form and an ego. He thinks he's smooth and is unflappable even in the face of absolute danger, which can make him seem flippant and irreverent. He can also be pushy, especially when it comes to his rider's mild temperament against anything outside of his comfort zone.
