Oh, just quoting... somewhere in the books someone asks a question (I forget what it was), and Ford bursts out, "42! Nope, doesn't work." blaugh And it didn't, either.

I think it was when Ford and Arthur were on young earth and Arthur pulls "what do you get when you multiply 6 X 9"? and Ford goes "42! Nope.....doesn't work"
I think

No, he said, "That's it?" and then Arthur was like, "Yeah, that's it." And then they both started laughing hysterically.
eek OMGZ! I just opened my Ultimate Guide at random, determined to find that quote, and the first page I opened the book to WAS THE RIGHT EFFING ONE.
eek It's a sign. ninja
eek I'm scared.
Anyway, from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Chapter 26 (and I'm still scared):
Douglas Adams "Why can't people just learn to live together in peace and harmony?" said Arthur. Ford gave a loud, very hollow laugh. "Forty-two!" he said with a malicious grin. "No, doesn't work. Never mind." Arthur looked at him as if he'd gone mad and, seeing nothing to indicate to the contrary, realized that it would be perfectly reasonable to assume that this had in fact happened.
