Name: Nyrida [Full name: Nyridanae; Childhood nickname: Anae]
Age: 21 turns
Sex: Cis female
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual, heavy female lean
Craft: Tanner (Apprentice), Healer (Apprentice)
Rank: Candidate, Apprentice Tanner (Current)
Location: Western Weyr
Physical Description: Nyrida is approximately 5'9" with an athletic build and lean muscle. She tends to wear leather boots and gloves, as well as other items made of her own hand. Otherwise, her clothing is characterized simply by being practical. She enjoys wearing a scarf for comfort, but is willing to go without as the temperature demands, which it usually does. She also has a small belt knife by her side, and holds herself with an air of regality and formality. Nyrida often wears a neutral expression, with her light brown eyes icy and cold. Although her hair is straight, it is slightly disheveled and long enough to span the length of her back.

Her features are sharp, almost wild, in appearance--between her sharp, slender nose and her thin lips, her face is at least memorable. Despite her neutral affect, the downward arch of her thick eyebrows give her an annoyed look. Her face, slightly gaunt in appearance, boasts a sharp jawline. She holds herself with perfect posture, elegant, regal, and deliberate, without any showing imperfections.

Personality: protective, self-sacrificing, loyal, caring, sarcastic, cynical, lonely, formal, awkward, vengeful
a distant, overly formal young woman who puts up barriers of both unoffensive politeness and dry sarcasm to mask her protective, caring nature and the sadness she feels within.

Nyrida is extremely protective of those she cares about, to the point of being overbearing and motherly in any kind of relationship. Keeping others safe is her top priority, and she sees her own selfless acts and self-sacrifice as necessary, on a subconscious level. A bit of a self-made martyr, she seems to believe that she must suffer so that others can be happy. Despite this, she remains loyal and steadfast to the few friends she has grown close to.

Her protective nature extends to those outside of her general circle of loved ones. Even those she doesn’t know will receive nurturing and her overzealous protection. While she cares deeply for the wellbeing of others, and her actions tend to be kind and generous, she can come off as harsh when she speaks. She is not quite sure how to handle delicate situations, and can be a bit unintentionally harsh and scathing in word, even critical and judgmental as she speaks. She is also a bit petty, and can be motivated by spite.

Nyrida seems unable to express genuine emotion. Aloofness becomes her. If she’s not being overly formal, she is giving an unhealthy degree of snark. When she becomes comfortable with someone, she becomes more easily sarcastic and teasing, though people cannot always tell. Her humor, in general, is sarcastic and dry. She is cynical and pessimistic, often believing and seeing the worst in other people. She is more than happy to remark on such things.

Nyrida seems strong and independent. If nothing else, she is determined to survive, fiercely clinging to what she needs and wants. Assertive and capable, Nyrida will often stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. While willing to sacrifice some things for others, she will not let anything be taken from her. Despite this, she feels more vulnerable than she seems. Her past haunts her, and she feels lonely and isolated as a result of it, not to mention guilty. Sometimes her sense of humor manifests in self-depreciatory comments. She occasionally gets a bit broody and pensive about her life. Woe is Nyrida.

Despite having a hidden, more playful side, Nyrida is often serious, cold, and closed off. She keeps distance between herself and others, and it is very difficult to bridge the gap she creates. Usually, she maintains a proper, formal, and even stiff attitude, trying to be inoffensive and polite, even on the quiet side--except for when her sharp tongue comes out. As a result, she seems rather awkward. She doesn’t seem to know how to relate to others, and is difficult to relate to. She takes herself very seriously, and can be a bit overdramatic at times. Regardless, she is intense and surprisingly passionate, despite having a darker outlook.

Nyrida has a taste for vengeance. She will hold a grudge forever, and her resentment may boil over into (usually petty forms of) revenge, if it goes far enough. She is capable of intense love; she is also capable of intense hate. Both require quite a bit to activate, but they remain there, nonetheless. Despite being strongly motivated by both spite and vengeance, she has one thing that motivates her beyond all else: seeking knowledge. She wants to know at least a little about everything, especially dragonkin, who she is exceptionally fascinated with. She loves reading, and can often be found pouring over records for fun. Even if she doesn’t enjoy something, she remains hardworking, steadfast, and persistent.

Positive Trait List knowledgeable, loyal, independent
Negative Trait List awkward/distant, cynical, sarcastic
History: Born Nyridae, Nyrida was the first and only child of Neryna and Adilaen, born in a small cothold, largely of relatives--distant and otherwise. Her mother, Neryna, passed away in childbirth, and her father, Adilaen, found a second wife when Nyridanae was four. Nyridanae, given the childhood nickname of Anae, was often lost in the chaos. A quieter child, she blended in; many other children lived in their cothold, and Anae was often left behind or forgotten. She struggled with feeling lonely and isolated for as long as she could recall, a feeling that, surprisingly, grew worse when her half-sisters graced the world.

When she was five turns old, Adilaen’s second wife, Chiytora, gave birth to healthy twin girls--Adiyta and Torydiae. Both girls were bright and lit up a room. They were instantly beloved and cherished. While Nyridanae was loved by her father (who was beloved and precious to her), and to a lesser degree, her stepmother, she lacked the natural charisma and adoration that her little sisters seemed to immediately possess. Still, she cared for them, even if their relationship was a bit distant, and sometimes tumultuous. Unfortunately, her father was rarely at the hold. He travelled to the nearby Ista Hold, about a day’s travel, and spent most of the sevenday there, as a master-ranked healer. When he did return, he taught Anae his craft, from a young age. It was unofficial until she was 12, when she became an apprentice. As she grew older, she learned more about healing, and became confident in her abilities. Sure of herself, she began to work as a healer, in her own right--treating the minor ailments of those at her cothold, without her father’s constant supervision.

Families sometimes stopped by their cothold on the way to Ista, and it was surprisingly well-traveled for such a small cothold. When Anae was sixteen, a particular family rested at their cothold. Their daughter, Serytsa, caught Anae’s eye--and Anae caught hers, in turn. Serytsa’s parents were thrilled to see their quiet, shy, and rather sickly daughter become so close to someone, and as a result, the family resolved to spend a few turns at the cothold, possibly indefinitely. Serytsa and Anae formed a relationship by seventeen, falling in love with each other.

When thread returned, everyone was terrified. How could this happen? What did this mean for the future of Pern? Death and devastation followed, and while their stone cothold was safe, Adilaen had perished, travelling between holds. Nyridanae was distraught, but confident in her own abilities to keep people safe...until Serytsa’s poor timing resulted in her getting a threadscore across her chest. Nyridanae, only 19 at the time, was called from dinner to tend to Serytsa’s terrible wound. Serytsa was likely to survive, but Anae gave her too much fellis, frazzled and hoping to ease her beloved’s pain. In the end, Anae wasn’t sure what killed her--the injury, or fellis overdose. Anae was inconsolable at first, after Serytsa’s death, but eventually vowed to be strong. She closed off herself, feeling pain, but also determination to survive and flourish.

She shed her childhood nickname, Anae, and most of her identity as well, as a way of mourning. Nyrida, she would go by. She stopped practicing her craft, stopped hoping to walk the tables; instead, she left home, moving to the tanner hall, where she began to learn an entirely new craft. After about a turn of learning the basics, and avoiding letters from her remaining family, she transferred to learn at Western Weyr, desiring to learn more about dragons. She learned under the master there, until at 21, she was searched, almost by accident. She has not stood at any dragon hatchings yet, but is eager to potentially Impress, hoping it will fill the hole in her heart.
