Name: Zarsteyr (To be Z'teyr or Z'seyr)
Age: 26
Nameday: 3549.02.11
Sex: Male (Trans)
Sexual Orientation: Romantic. Just romantic, in general. (Pansexual)
Craft: Dragonhealer (Apprentice)
Rank: Candidate
Location: Western Weyr
Physical Description: Zarsteyr may only be 5'7", but he's a sturdy lad. He works out and engages in physical/athletic pursuits, and it shows. While his body lends itself more towards lean, sinewy muscle than bulk, it doesn't stop him from trying. His build is relatively runner-like and compact, but strong, with firm muscle. He'd rather have a more lumberjack-type build, with a trunk-like, unmovable core and a sturdy sort of bulk about him, but he never seems able to put on the necessary weight. His body just prefers to be more compact, it seems.

Zarsteyr is not the shortest of his siblings, but compared to Xahteis, he's always fallen a bit short. As a youth, he was the tallest of his siblings--with his sister being short, and staying that way, and his brother being rather small until puberty. He was a gangly, scrawny youth, who grew more sturdy as time went on, but lacked the sudden growth spurt of his brother. He has always wished for Xahteis's height, grumbling about it (in a good-natured way, mostly), but is (secretly) grateful that he didn't get Ilauria's genes in that regard. Sorry, Ilauria...

With a ruddier skin tone than his brother and sister, Zarsteyr's skin is nonetheless brown, and his dark hair is only a few shades lighter than theirs. He wears it cropped short, nice and out of the way. By right, he should have it shorter, to keep it out of the way even more, but...he likes the shaggy style, which is easy enough to cut that even he can do his own hair. As a result, it's a little uneven in parts, but given the slight wave in how his hair sits, it works well enough. Generally, Zarsteyr prefers practical clothing in earthy or neutral colors. He's definitely not one for bright, saturated, or neon colors. Still, he has his own sort of fashion, preferring to look cleaned up and well-shaven, with a casual-yet-neat clothing style. He enjoys wearing a long jacket, made of wherhide, which he takes great care in caring for.

Personality: Zarsteyr, noble defender of the weak. Zarsteyr, ready to protect his friends and family--and others, too. Zarsteyr...easily embarrassed and flustered. Despite acting like he has everything together, Zarsteyr is easily flustered, especially by others flirting with him. He's a closet romantic (which is a poorly kept secret, given how flustered he gets), who tends to daydream about romance. Those who show romantic or sexual interest in him see a very different side of him, an embarrassed, awkward Zarsteyr who doesn't quite know what to say.

Usually, he's cocky, proud, and self-assured, at least in appearances. He's less confident than he acts, naturally, but has certain areas--such as his competency and physical abilities--that he is genuinely proud of, and rarely feels incapable. Helpless, maybe, but he knows he is strong and has good abilities. Sometimes...those abilities just don't matter, because there's nothing he can do, or he lacks a particular set of skills.

In every meaning of the word, Zarsteyr is a fighter. He will fight tooth and nail to defend others and achieve his goals, such as Impressing a dragon. As it turns out, all the determination in the world doesn't make a dragon necessarily want to Impress you. He perseveres through all odds, and refuses to give in. What does Zarsteyr want? That's simple. He wants to save and protect everyone. Absolutely everyone. Sometimes, this results in him feeling helpless--like he's personally failed anyone who has been harmed. He takes injuries and deaths exceptionally personally, but tries his best not to show it.

Bullheaded, stubborn, and careless. He refuses to budge and tends to fight any attempts to make him change his mind fiercely. Unless it comes to helping others or the stakes are high, he isn't very meticulous or careful, and is prone to making mistakes. As a result, he might be occasionally late to lessons, or slip up in practices. Reckless, he tends to act impulsively, without thinking. As a result, he's gotten into a few minor fights, and perhaps one or two that were more major. Still, he's not so foolish as to throw his chance at candidacy away, so he's currently on his best behavior. After all, he loves dragons and is highly motivated by Impression. He tends to daydream about Impressing, and what it will be like, but remains present, more often than not.

He's very straightforward and short-sighted, and rarely thinks things through. He doesn't exactly know how to deal with things, and if the options don't include healing, punching, or simply surviving/waiting it out, he's not really sure how to proceed. His main motivation is, of course, to protect everyone, and he gets upset when he can't protect everyone, or doesn't have the magic solution. Because of this, he tries to keep himself very physically fit, but that's also because he wants to look strong as well as be strong. He pushes his body and enjoys physical exercise and athleticism. Generally, he believes in doing what is practical or useful, and can be quite resourceful with what he has available.

That said, his determination has an edge, a fierceness about it. He questions himself, always, but aims for the skies. His ambitions are relatively shortsighted and vague, but involve saving the world and stuff...somehow! (And also Impressing.) He's willing to do whatever it takes to save others, including sacrificing himself. He's impulsive, and throws himself in harm's way quite often. Zarsteyr hates bullies and people who act in evil ways...but he's the type to fall into the trope of saving the villain when they're hanging off a cliff.

Zarsteyr takes a lot onto his shoulders, and takes responsibility for everyone and everything. He takes duty very seriously, and as a result, tends to listen to his superiors, when the stakes matter. He will do whatever it takes to protect his weyr. While generally tough and resilient, he gets frustrated with himself and feels like an awful person when he can't help. Easily prone to bouts of depression, he nonetheless bounces back easily.

While gentle with those who need it, Zarsteyr is impatient and likes to do things quickly. He doesn't like waiting or lengthy tasks, and gets easily bored and frustrated with them. He also has a temper, especially when honor and pride are involved--either his own, or that of others. He cares deeply about his family and friends, but would sacrifice himself for the safety of just about everyone. His moods are mercurial and unpredictable, tending to shift frequently. Some days he's depressed about terrible things happening and feeling helpless; other times he'll feel on top of the world and optimistic. Some days he will be easily annoyed and quick to snap at others. It really depends, but he tries to keep himself relatively stable.

Despite his temper, he's generally friendly. He acts overly cocky, but can be kind and caring. Zarsteyr is generous, and would give anyone the clothing off his back, and is generally sociable and motivated by being around people. He's affectionate--a bit too much so--and tends to enjoy hugs and physical contact where permitted. That said, he's mindful of boundaries, and tries not to push them. Despite this, he gets flustered by romantic physical displays of affection.

He gets discouraged and sad quite a bit, thinking about death. He's not over his parents' deaths, of course, and hates threadfall with a burning passion. His main motivation is to be helpful to others, to protect them, keep them safe. Zarsteyr takes important tasks seriously, and completes them eagerly. Quick to take a challenge, he enjoys tackling difficult and complex tasks. When it comes down to it, he believes strongly in doing his duty and working hard. He always yearns to act, to do something--he hates inaction, and wants to be useful.

Positive Trait List dutiful, hardworking, friendly, determined
Negative Trait List impatient, temper, self-sacrificing, mercurial

History: The middle child of two greenriders, Zarsteyr and his sister Ilauria were raised in the creche. Their parents were busy, but still present. Their lives were pleasant and ordinary, with Ilauria itching to become a candidate from a young age. Zarsteyr, for his part, insisted he was a trans boy from a young age, and his family supported this. He was the largest of his siblings, which he enjoyed, especially once Xahteis was born. At eight, their baby brother showed up, and the two older siblings doted on him. He was the baby! He needed protection, especially from Zarsteyr, because Zarsteyr was tall and strong! Athletic from the start, he was exceptionally proud of his body...until puberty, when he started developing secondary sex characteristics and stopped growing early. Suddenly, he was SHORT, and it wasn't fair! All his life, he was athletic, and upon realizing he was short, he only worked out more, determined to be sturdy and strong--even if not tall.

At the age of 10, he became an apprentice dragonhealer. He loved dragons, and itched to be helpful. He couldn't wait for candidacy to work with dragons, and after all, it was good to have a backup. That's not to say that he didn't become a candidate as soon as he could, at 14. Surprisingly, he was a gentle healer with careful hands, but grew impatient easily. Why did things take longer sometimes, why did they take so long to heal? Still, he remained steady and gentle, careful not to harm anyone when he worked. As a candidate, Ilauria was teased for her height, but remained determined to be a candidate. A twelve-year-old Zarsteyr got it in his head to defend his sister from the teasing. Mostly, it was verbal, but he even got into a fight or two (which he lost, of course) to protect her. Finally, she told him she didn't need or want his protection in this area, and he reluctantly agreed to stop getting beat up in the name of his sister's honor.

Before he could even become a candidate, his sister Impressed to a brown, and he was proud. Despite being a strong dragonhealer, he was quick to put it to the side, shifting to candidacy with determination. Candidacy passed easily, and he never Impressed--though he never lost hope. His sister had Impressed after all!

At 20, his brother left to go to the weaver crafthall, which bothered Zarsteyr, as he missed his brother, but...it was Xahteis's choice, after all. He wasn't really sure why his brother left. Weaving couldn't be better than dragons! Zarsteyr kept going as a candidate, and threw himself further into it when thread fell. When 26, when threadfall lead to the deaths of both his parents--first his father, then his mother--he only grew more determined to protect his weyr, to do his duty, to fight alongside his sister.
