Name: Fivudal
Age: 28
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual
Craft: Healer (Trauma)
Rank: Journeyman
Location: High Reaches
Physical Description: Fivudal is a conventionally handsome man, nicely proportioned and with no major scars or birthmarks. He stands at a respectable six feet tall and is fairly in shape, not overly muscled but it's clear he spends a bit of his free time focusing on maintain his physique. His sandy blonde hair is short and a bit scruffy, cut this way to keep out of his way during work. He'll usually have a bit of facial hair as well but never anything too long for the same reason he has for keeping his hair short. His eyes are mostly a startlingly pale blue and are ringed with a deeper shade of the same hue. On anyone else they might have been intimidating or off-putting, but the warm smile that's nearly constantly on his face helps warm his icy eyes a bit.

Fivudal is generally dressed in practical clothing when working, but when off-duty he prefers to dress on the fancier side. It makes him feel more confident and he feels that a good first impression is key when meeting new people, even if you'll never see them again. He prefers more subtle colors, shying away from bright, bold hues so as not to draw too much attention to himself.
Personality: Fivudal is incredibly in tune with other people's feelings - if someone is happy, Fivudal is all smiles. If someone is crying, Fivudal will tear up as well. Even if he's never personally experienced whatever someone else is going through, good or bad, he can easily empathize with the other person and join in their joy, sorrow, frustration, anger, or embarrassment. It goes hand in hand with his caring nature and his desire to connect with everyone he comes in contact with, whether it's through his craft or simply in passing. Fivudal has found that his bedside manner greatly impacts his patients and letting them talk their feelings out to someone who is there to listen earnestly improves their overall recovery rate and he is forever grateful that he doesn't have to force or fake his nature. In the same vein, whether it's in work or play, Fivudal is very thorough in everything he does. He makes sure he sees it through from start to finish and any loose ends are tied up. A flake he is not and you can always count on him to get a job done that he says he'll do. Leaving something unfinished will bother him for days even if he knows someone else picked up where he left off.

Fivudal is willing to go above and beyond for patients, friends, family, and even strangers. He is quick to put the needs and wants of others before his own, making them the priority. While he generally keeps himself in good condition and doesn't let his body or mind grow fatigued, there are times when work takes priority and he'll ignore basic needs like food, water, and sleep in order to continue a tough surgery or to keep an eye on a critical patient. He tries not to do this often as he knows it's bad practice, but sometimes it can't be helped...or so he says. Despite the proof that he knows what he's doing, Fivudal often scolds himself over simple things like a stitch that could have been tied better or a few minutes that could have been saved on a surgery for a silly mistake early on. Even after a successful surgery he'll think about things he did wrong or could have done better for days, sometimes weeks after the procedure. People depend on him and letting them down in the slightest feels like a mark against his skill or intelligence to him so any small flaw always seems like a massive failure.

Though he tries his best to stay positive, Fivudal is quite cynical at heart. He has seen a lot in his short time on Pern and knows just how awful humans can be to one another. Many times he's stitched someone up who had been attacked and robbed, abused by a loved one, or some other atrocity. To him, humans are not inherently kind which is why he strives so hard to be as good as he can be. And yet after all his efforts, all his hard work and dedication, he often finds the same people back in his care for one reason or another. It's all quite exhausting and Fivudal is already overworked in mind and tired in soul from everything he has seen. The small handful of truly good people on Pern is overwhelmed by the tidal waves of greed, hate, anger, pain, suffering, and jealousy that the masses bring. And yet he soldiers on, jaded and weary, in an attempt to bring comfort and ease the pain of those who come to him.
Positive Trait List Empathetic, conscientious, kind, selfless
Negative Trait List Workaholic, cynical, jaded, self-depreciating
History: Fivudal was born at Fort Hold into a little family of healers. His father specialized in mind healing while his mother's specialty was acupuncture. Together they made a power couple of sorts, healing those with ailments that couldn't be treated by the general healer. Fivudal grew up watching his parents with interest and eagerness and he knew he wanted to follow in their footsteps. It wasn't until he began his Apprenticeship with one of the Craftmasters that he found what called to him most - trauma healing. It was a high-stress job but Fivudal was so drawn to it he couldn't deny the call. It was hard work and came with lots of sadness - trauma healers dealt with life and death frequently - but the victories made the failures worth it.

Fivudal advanced through his training as he grew and turned into a trusted and tried Trauma Healer Journeyman just shy of his twenty first Turn, an accomplishment that made him and his parents proud beyond words. It was a few months into his new role when his life took an interesting turn on a routine day. A Searchrider had come to Fort Hold and the dragon and rider sought him out to tell him they thought he'd made a wonderful Candidate at High Reaches. To say Fivudal was surprised was an understatement. He had seen plenty of Searchriders come to the Hold, but it was usually for younger boys and girls. He was twenty one Turns and would only be able to Stand as a Candidate for five, but how could he turn down the request? To be a dragon rider was the highest honor on Pern and who was he to deny a little dragon from finding Theirs should he be the one they were looking for?

He agreed to go back to High Reaches, putting his career on hold. Should he be chosen by a dragon he'd focus on becoming a rider, and if he aged out he had a solid path to fall back on. He was sure he'd be able to keep his skills somewhat sharp at the Weyr as well, using what little free time he'd be offered to assist in the Healer's wing, but he quickly found that any free time he had was spent doing work or sleeping. Being a Candidate was exhausting and Fivudal gained a newfound respect for each and every classmate he had, as well as those that had found their dragons. With each passing Turn he stood on the Sands, waiting for a little dragon to toddle up to him, but each hatching proved fruitless. He began to wonder if he had somehow been Searched too late, that perhaps years ago there had been a dragon for him that he had somehow missed. He knew it didn't work that way but his own worry and pessimism kept that thought circulating right up until his twenty sixth Turn. With that he was done, no longer a Candidate, and after packing up his things he returned to Fort Hold dragonless and five Turns out of practice.

The 'rejection' of sorts cut Fivudal deeper than he ever thought it would. He had been Searched, yet no dragon had picked him. Perhaps it was for the best, that his destiny lay with the scalpel and numbweed and not on dragonback. It had been a fantasy to live as a Candidate for five Turns and he eventually came to cherish the experience and the honor even though he hadn't been chosen, the potential to be a dragon rider had still been seen and that would have to be enough.

It took him a few Turns to get back into the swing of things, studying under his old teacher to brush up his skills and learn new techniques that had been learned in his absence. He dove back into healing with gusto both to put his failure behind him and because he truly did enjoy the work he was doing. Time flew by for Fivudal once he got back into his groove and it was a good thing he did, because his skills would come in very handy in the near future.

Thread returned, and with it pain, death, and destruction. Fivudal was ready for it if only because of the training he received at High Reaches, but it was still a surprise and a shock. After the initial return he found himself back at High Reaches where the need for trauma healers was fairly great to handle the riders that came back from fighting Thread with severe injuries. It had been a handful of Turns since he'd last stepped foot in the Weyr, but it was like he was back home again and he settled into his role quickly.

Now he can be found on the Sands at each hatching once again although in a different capacity than he first was. This last hatching was particularly eventful and he had his hands full with all the Candidates that had gotten injured, so much so that he missed most of the Impressions. Still, he loves being out there with the Candidates to see the Impressions and to help those that might be on the wrong end of a mauling.

Couple of things jump out:

1. He is waaaaaay too old to be a standidate. XDDD The cutoff is 30 for standidates, but I would probably make him a little younger just to allow him a chance to Impress. 35 is well past that point.
2. He's virtually flawless. I'm not reading any major flaws here. The thing that comes the closest is being a serious workaholic, but as a healer, and especially a surgeon, that's very common. The rest of his "flaws" fall on a similar vein. Common for a healer.

As we'll be trying to pair him with a dragonet, I really need those flaws, as they distinguish individuals from one another and allow for future character growth. We'll want to match partially based on how he can assist his dragonet with their flaws and how they can aid him with his own. Right now it's not coming across very strongly.

Changed his age XD My bad.

Also edited his personality/flaws a bit. Wasn't sure if you just wanted me to expand in the paragraph section or change some of the actual traits out, so I did both! biggrin
