Kaito on career missions during the five year time skip to become a detective on the force.

Kaito Nagadera
Detective Reynolds

He had intended to shadow an officer for a week to see if he was still committed to the force. If he was ready to serve his village after two years of recovering from the war. He had seen a family friend that was a therapist for a little while but he found out she had confided in his mother about it and... and Kaito hadn't been able to cope with his mother actually knowing. This brought him here, following Reynolds to the scene of a crime. The murderer had already been assassinated by the police by the time they'd responded to the call. His victim was dead, too. A twelve year old girl who looked shockingly like Maeko, but Kaito kept his mouth shut about it and tried to avoid looking at her.

"What do you see?" Kaito jumped at Reynolds' commanding voice. He was too present to pretend he was unaware of the detective's meaning. Kaito didn't really want to reconstruct the bloody scene, but he did anyways. Kaito frowned as he circled the scene, careful of his footprints but already aware the police had taken several photos and 'solved' the case already. He walked into the house despite both bodies being on the front lawn, and Reynolds followed. Kaito gestured to the wall behind the front door, where there was a small hole at the height of the door knob. "This shows the initial interaction between the two. He had knocked on her door, probably acted as if he was injured as per his M.O. She either hadn't let him in or she had only slightly opened the door to talk to him. He was angry and kicked the door in; she was fast enough to move back from the swing, but the door still slammed into the wall to leave the hole." He looked at Reynolds expression, which seemed to be urging him to explain more, so Kaito sighed through his nose and peered into the door frame to see where the door lock was. It was blasted open from the force of the door being kicked in, confirming that the door had remained closed until the perp had forced his way into the residence; otherwise, the door lock hole in the frame would've been in tact from her leaving it slightly open to talk to him. Kaito said as much, receiving a small nod from Reynolds who remained silent so that Kaito would continue.

Kaito walked further into the residence where he found another hole at the wall across the entrance. "This hole suggests a broad object was thrown into it heavily from a normal force instead of a sharp angle; this matches the bleeding across Jane's skull. It is easy to conclude that he had marched in and grabbed her head, throwing it into the wall to daze her or incapacitate her. This matches his previous murders, where there was always blunt force trauma at the head." Reynolds gestured for him to continue, arms crossed, so Kaito tried to speed things up.

He pointed to a few blood drops that were between the wall and the entrance. "This happened after she was thrown into the wall. She stumbled - as is evident by the uneven splatter - through the front door and into the lawn. She was holding the injury, as her hands are coated with her own blood. She probably screamed for help since her parents were not home, but this late at night, her neighbors were likely in deep sleep. She wasn't heard, so she tried to make to the street judging from the trajectory of her footsteps pressed into the wet grass of her lawn." He was especially careful to walk through the lawn as he pointed to her steps.

"What makes you believe she was not heard?"

Kaito panicked momentarily at the question, then regained his composure. He was trying not to take any opposition as a threat, but these days, his paranoia made him think everyone was out to get him. "Well. From the preview of the file you let me view, it seems that the perp was going to get away with it except for the patrolling ANBU policewoman who had been strolling the neighborhood, recognized his face, and sent a kunai through his neck, which forced him to collapse on the lawn without drawing another breath. Since this is the case, it appears that no one in the neighborhood was awake to help since no one was seen coming to their own front doors until dawn, when the APD appeared to take photos and document the scene. It's now seven o'clock - and most of the neighborhood has still not appeared to see the gruesome scene, and the one neighbor who had is being questioned right now in his home - and since everything has been finished up, you decided to take the opportunity to test how well I have been paying attention to you when you sweep a scene, and now I am here reviewing the crime for you."

Kaito looked expectantly at Reynolds, who waved him on to continue. "So, she was not heard as she stumbled onto her front lawn. She almost made it to the streets as evident by her final footstep, but he had pounced on her with his chakra gloves on, as seen by the slight bruises appearing on her shoulders. He tackled her to the ground and retrieved a - hm."

He was going to mention the oddly aesthetic chalice that rested on the lawn far from the both of them, but the blood on the bottom of it that he had originally thought was used as blunt force against the victims head had a different splatter pattern than trauma would call for. He walked over to it and picked it up carefully with his gloved fingers. He inspected it closer to find that the splatter was corresponding with a higher velocity - the bottom chalice splatter was from the perp's neck, and the blood within the chalice was properly collected from the victim's head blood before the perp was assaulted by police.

Kaito explained as much to Reynolds, who graced him with a slight smile - blink and you miss it kind - and gestured for him to wrap it up. Kaito felt more confident as he continued. "So, we can conclude instead of the chalice that the perpetrator used his elbow to dig into the previous trauma wound on the victim, killing her from the trauma of the blow and not blood loss. He then turned the chalice around to start collecting the blood pouring from her open skull.

"This fits his M.O. since he had collected the blood of four other victims in a cup of some sort so he could drink it later as part of some insane ritual. He had probably brought the chalice up to his lips, since the perp has blood in his mouth; while it could be blood coming from his throat after the anbu's attack, the perp had fallen onto his side so it would have been more likely for pooling blood to pour out the edge of his mouth instead of the front of his lips, where we found blood. He had been about to drink her fresh blood when the policewoman spotted the man and reacted effortlessly. She threw the kunai at his throat, which tore open an artery and killed him, essentially, instantly."

[ Investigation - B - x13 (counts as 26 missions towards title advancement for police anbu specifically ]

He looked to Reynolds, who had already cased the scene a few minutes before Kaito had arrived at his call. "Now, we have collected all of the photos and evidence, and the APD will take both bodies to the morgue. The other duty of the APD, as an offshoot of ANBU, is that we must clean up the crime scene completely. Are you ready to get your hands dirty?"

Kaito nodded and went to work inside the house, grabbing soap so he could scrub the blood off the floor. There was a special cleaner in the soap he used, something concocted by an ANBU clean-up specialist. He got to work rubbing the blood off the floor, but now that he wasn't talking and focusing on Reynolds, his brain unhelpfully reminded him that the victim looked like Maeko. He wiped up the blood on the ground, remembering that he figured out she had been stumbling to the front, unaware she was about to take her last steps altogether.

Tears sprung in his eyes unbidden, but he finished scrubbing dutifully. He owed her parents a home that wasn't tragically destroyed like their family was. He finished up and put the sponge back in the cleaning bucket, which was a brownish color now from the blood. She'd been so young... twelve years old. The exact age he went to war and killed.

He must have looked like a zombie when he poured the bucket cleaner outside onto the sewer drain. Reynolds came up to him, a cigarette in his mouth, and put a heavy hand on his shoulder. "I know you're still recovering. I know you're trying to atone. But you're damn good at this, and you can help people this way too."

"When they're already dead?" He asked callously, voice breaking on the last word.

"You don't have to spend your entire APD career as a detective; you can patrol the streets, too. But you give people closure. You help them get on the right path to healing. That's gotta be worth something, kid." Reynolds seemed to feel awkward in the intimate conversation from one moment to the next and cleared his throat to compensate, taking a heavy drag from his cigarette and walking off to talk to another APD member.

[ Erasure - D - x4 ]

[ 30 Missions complete // Police Force Branch complete // For 30+ Anbu jobs, the character gains the title of "Police Force Anbu: Shadow", to be listed on the profile. ]
