Physical Description: Rian is of average height and somewhat slender build, with long, slim fingers and a fairly modest bust. With a fair skin-tone and blue eyes that sometimes have a greenish cast to them set in a face that leans toward heart-shaped, her features are rather pretty, but her pale blonde hair is just wavy enough to refuse to adhere to any kind of order and looks perpetually messy and fluffed out around her head. Even if she bothers to tie back the shoulder-length mess, it inevitably slips free of its bindings and looks like she slept on it before the end of the day, so always has a slightly-disheveled look about her. She also has a tendency to sunburn, which more often than not leaves her with reddened nose and ears, sometimes to the point of peeling.

Personality: A friendly, compassionate sort of girl, Rian is quick to approach others, especially those she sees as in need, and offer them a hand. She enjoys making friends and meeting new people, and is open-minded enough that she’ll reach a hand out to anyone, be they shy or outgoing, condescending or insecure, irritable or cheerful, she sees the value in all people and sincerely wants to befriend them. More than that, she wants to help them --- particularly those souls who are in pain or have some sort of obvious need, though she’s just as quick to jump in and offer a hand with a mundane problem like a lost item as she is with a first heartbreak or personal loss. One of Rian’s greatest desires in life is to be useful, and she’s not picky about who or what she’s useful to. If she can be an asset in some way to an individual, to the weyr, to Pern, any one of those things would make her happy.

Unfortunately, while she’s sweet and open-minded, Rian is also relatively naive and oblivious. It isn’t that she’s stupid, really, or even that she has her head in the clouds --- it’s that she sincerely wants to see the best in everyone, and tends to assume the best of everyone she meets until she’s faced with undeniable proof to the contrary. This makes her unfortunately prone to being manipulated, as her faith in others’ goodness can and will blind her to ill intentions. To make matters worse, she can be over-eager in her attempts to befriend people and offer assistance, which makes her all-too-often annoying. Sometimes people don’t want help, or they want to do something themselves, and Rian isn’t always very good at recognizing that, which can get very tiring very quickly.

In addition to all of this, Rian can get so caught up in reaching out to and supporting others that she forgets to take initiative for herself. It takes an opportunity falling right into her lap for her to seize it, and all too often she’ll let it pass by even then, certain it can do more good going to someone else, someone who needs and wants this chance more than she does. It isn’t laziness, not really --- she simply puts so much of herself into others that she has difficulty recognizing and claiming something for herself, or even that she should want that. After all, she’s happy so long as she’s helpful! Isn’t that enough?

History: Born and raised in High Reaches weyr, Rian never had much personal exposure to her parents. Instead, the creche was her family, and she loved everyone she met, from the workers to the other children. As she grew, she became especially enamored of the historical and traditional role of the weyr, and especially the Riders. Rather than causing her to feel superiority for belonging to a weyr with such a storied history, she instead internalized it all as proof that she was born to help and protect others, in whatever form that may take. If she was meant to fly a dragon and serve the people of Pern with a lifetime companion at her side, then no matter how grueling it could be, it would be more than worth it. And if she wasn’t? Well, there were a thousand thousand other ways she could still find to do the one thing she really loved.

Her childhood was pleasant but uneventful, and the moment she was old enough she became a candidate --- certainly, she could have refused, but why would she do that? If you were born in the weyr, then once you hit fourteen turns you became a candidate; it was as simple as that in her mind. Never mind that thread had come back, putting the idea of riding a dragon into a much more dangerous light than it had been for the vast majority of her life; it was simply how things were meant to be. Frightening as threadfall was, if she was dragonback Rian was certain she would be able to handle it, and there was never really any possibility of her refusing her right to candidacy.

She’s been standing for two turns now, and is beginning to think about picking up a trade in order to have a backup option she can fall back on should she not Impress, but while she’s tried to learn a bit about the different trades that would be available to her, Rian hasn’t yet been able to settle on one of them. There are, she has learned, too many options, and unless one path stands out from the others soon, her indecision may keep her from learning one. For now, she’s still going to pin her hopes on following the clear-cut --- if not guaranteed --- path from weyrbrat to Candidate to Impression, and in the meantime, well, there’s always an odd job opportunity or two for those free days, and maybe one will open up another path to her if that’s what she’s meant to take.
