Name: Nemeryn
Age: 21
Nameday: 3555.10.09
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Slow to realize, either way.
Craft: Pirate
Rank: N/A
Location: Western Weyr

Physical Description: Tall, broad, and muscular, Nemeryn cuts an intimidating figure. His skin is tan from a life at sea, and his long mane of red hair is often pulled back just to stay out of his way. He is not prone to smiling, and his default expression seems to be a scowl. His eyes are a warm reddish brown, definitely leaning towards red when in the light.

Personality: Nemeryn is a taciturn man who faces down problems with a will of steel that cows under no pressure. He relies on his ferocity and considerable will to conquer any obstacles that may try to push him back. Pushing back, however, has leaned his behavior into intimidation and he will not hesitate to use it and back up any threats that may come from it. Some might call him a brute because of this, and in some ways, they aren’t wrong. However, Nemeryn often uses these tactics on behalf of others, rather than for himself. His crew and family (almost interchangeable) are the most important things in his world, and he would lay down his life for them without hesitation. Nemeryn doesn’t let people grow close to him easily, but once he does, those people are slotted into the ‘protect at all costs’ category.

Outside of those special people, Nemeryn does not enjoy interacting socially with others. Working as a team is one thing: he has no problem cooperating with others in order to accomplish a task. Having mundane chit-chat? Nope. He can be harsh and doesn’t bother to hesitate to hide his disinterest or disdain. In fact, Nemeryn doesn’t hide any of his emotions well. It makes him easy to read, but can also lead to awkward situations when he reacts in a way he probably shouldn’t. Picking up on social cues and emotions is a struggle, and he often fails to even understand his own feelings. Having a crush on someone? He probably won’t even realize he does until someone points it out to him. Someone’s jealous or envious because of something he’s doing? He’ll have zero clue. If things aren’t stated or spelled out for him, Nemeryn might not ever figure it out.

Underneath all his gruff layers is a softer, gentler side to him. To those important people in his life, Nemeryn is considerate and protective. As he doesn’t drop his guard for many, he can become quite possessive of those rare few who do wiggle under his guard. New faces attempting to befriend “his” people will be treated with suspicion, if not outright hostility.

History: Born to the fierce pirate captain Maeryn and her first mate Milosh, Nemeryn has been a pirate since his first breath. From a very young age, he was taught how to fight, plunder, and survive. The little boy took the nickname Nemesis for himself, declaring that he would be the enemy to any who dared stand against his mother’s crew. He had little interest in associating with anyone whenever they would disembark, not seeing the point. Why bother? They weren’t crew, and he might never see them again.

That opinion changed quickly when he met a boy a little younger than he was at Rivercrest Hold. His name was Aneirin, and he wasn’t quite like anyone that Nem had ever met before. He was happy to spend time with his new friend--eager, even. Maeryn noted the budding relationship with a keen eye, and stops to Rivercrest became a bit more frequent than they had been. That suited Nemeryn just fine. He liked Aneirin very much, unaware that his feelings would deepen into something new over time.

As they grew older, Aneirin walked the tables to become a Journeyman courtesan. Nemeryn had somehow failed to realize that meant that he would now be working in the brothel, and the sudden knowledge made something ugly and savage twist in his chest. He wasn’t quite sure why, but he hated the thought of the young man being with clients. He certainly didn’t hesitate to make his opinion known, either. Still, despite his sour mood, it made him appreciate what time he did get to spend with Anierin all the more. He looked forward to his friend’s rest days with an intensity that few could miss.

Taking pity upon her son, Maeryn eventually pulled him aside to talk to him about his feelings. It was slightly similar to being hit between the eyes with a hammer: once aware of it, Nemeryn wasn’t quite sure how he hadn’t realized it before. He liked Aneirin--far more than mere friendship. The only problem was, he wasn’t exactly sure how to express himself. What if his feelings weren’t returned? He ultimately decided to keep quiet about it, simply appreciating what he had for now.

After one successful raid, the crew sailed back to Rivercrest Hold. Nemeryn was looking forward to seeing Aneirin… only to be told that he was no longer there. He was gone, taken away by a dragonrider for the chance to become one himself. Nem felt as though he’d been kicked in the chest. Aneirin couldn’t be gone. His brain didn’t want to accept it. A dragonrider happened to be visiting Rivercrest at the time, and without thinking, Nemeryn stepped up to confront the man. It wasn’t a rational or smart decision, but he wasn’t exactly thinking. It took all of two seconds for the rider to verbally cut him to pieces: it had been the young man’s choice to go, and Candidates were needed for the dragons that protected Pern. Who did he think he was?

At that moment, the man’s dragon took a pointed interest in the angry Nemeryn, proclaiming that this one would be a good option for a Candidate. Temporarily dumbstruck, it took only a few moments for Nemeryn to agree. He made his goodbyes to his family and was flown to Western Weyr--where Aneirin just so happened to be.

Nemeryn had never considered himself to be anything but a pirate… but perhaps this would be the start of something new.

Other: He has a gold flit named Wave!
