Physical Description: Athletic and well-muscled without being bulky, Relku stands at 6'1", nothing remarkable by Weyr standards, but with icy blue eyes and roughly cut silver-blonde hair, he is rather attractive.
Personality:
On first impression, Relku fits right in with the cool kids, and effortlessly so: he's attractive, with an easy confidence and just enough of an edge that it's more alluring than off-putting. There's a certain careful distance he keeps between himself and most others, an unwillingness to allow anyone in close enough to see his weak points or innermost workings, though his deflections are smooth and polite, not prickly; he has walls up, but not thorns.
While not gushingly friendly, he's generally not difficult to get on with, though certain personalities - bullies and snobs come to mind - will grate on him. If someone does get on his nerves, he's like to make snide little digs that might gradually escalate, depending on the particular person and their responses. He is, however, unlikely to come to blows unless it's necessary to defend someone else. Relku is fiercely devoted to those he sees as friends, and once someone has his loyalty, he will do anything for them, including throwing himself into danger. Still, even with his friends, he's not exactly the cuddly type, and unless pulled into the midst of things - or into physical affection - is content just to be around those he cares for, whether he has anything to add to the conversation or not. He does like to tease, jab, and joke with and at his friends, albeit gently so, but if it ever becomes apparent that they don't care for it, he will tone it down.
His loyalty does have a complication: he's very prone to jealousy. Under his easy confidence, there's a seed of insecurity, and he's quick to feel left out or worry that maybe his friends like each other better than they like him, and may leave him behind. Whether they forgot to invite him along for something or they stopped talking when he got to the table, his imagination will run away with him, and he'll start to fear what seems inevitable abandonment. Rather than ask questions or clear the air, however, he'll bottle his suspicions up and brood over them until they boil over. If he does lose hold over his emotions, Relku is absolutely savage; he won't get physically violent, but he doesn't pull any of his cutting words. Nothing is off-limits: he will dredge up the past, bring up secrets, say things he knows will hit that particular person where it hurts the most. It won't take him long to well and truly regret it and rake himself over the coals with guilt, but whether there will be a friendship left to salvage afterwards will remain to be seen. At his best, Relku is a supportive and protective friend, but at his worst, suspicious and quick to imagine hurts that could sabotage what he values most in the world. Even if he is forgiven, he'll doubt whether he deserves to be; while others might forgive him, he'll always have a terrible time forgiving himself, and be driven to make up for it and perhaps feel he deserves to suffer.
Drive will never be something Relku lacks: once he sets his sights on a goal or is given a task, he will see it through, no matter what it takes. He can sometimes be blinded by the endgame, by what he wants, to the point where he can lose sight of the consequences pushing to get there might have. While not comfortable with collateral damage, per se, he can simply fail to see it if there's not someone there to bring him to his senses. When it comes to what needs to be done - or what he feels needs to be done - Relku is fearless, for better or for worse, and won't hesitate to take a leap or make a call. He has too much pride to accept failure, or even second best, and is intensely competitive. Even in 'friendly' competitions, he'll have a difficult time swallowing his pride if he doesn't come in first; he won't take it out on his friends or hold it against them, but he will be a bit surly and sulky for awhile. Dovetailing nicely (or poorly, depending on the situation) with his competitiveness and decisiveness is a certain sense of adventure, a curiosity about what lies beyond the horizon. In a time without Thread, he'd likely have taken up something like Mercenary work, and been well-suited to it.

History:
Born post-Flight to a mother who quickly lost interest in him and a bronzerider father, Relku spent most of his childhood in the creche of High Reaches. His father, at least, did his best to spend what time he could with his son, and they were moments that Relku cherished. There was never any doubt in his mind that his father loved him...until, when he was 7 Turns old, his father put in for a transfer to Southern Weyr, and never returned. At the time, it broke Relku's heart, and left him questioning what he'd done wrong. As he's gotten older, he's taken a more bitter view of the man, but the issues he's left behind remain.
He appreciated those he was fostered by, and never caused much fuss or any real issues, but didn't form a close bond, either. He was an easy charge to have, and that continued when he entered Candidacy - whatever the chore or lesson, he does what's expected without complaint, and works well enough with most anyone he's assigned to something with. He has considered a handful of people to be close friends over the Turns, but he hasn't held onto them all. Maybe they've Impressed and grown past the friendship, maybe they've left and gone to Hall, or maybe they've had a falling out, but he does still have one or two.
He's drifted in and out of the popular crowd from time to time, and hung around with the children of other metallic riders, but for the most part, he does his own thing and has his own opinions, and doesn't feel bound to any particular group or clique. And while he may worry about whether or not he'll ever Impress, he doesn't waste time obsessing over color. Relku strives to be worthy of a dragon, full stop, with no consideration for the details. The dragons know best, after all, and they all serve Pern and their Weyr.
