Name: Dagmara
Age: 20
Nameday: 3557.01.07
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Weyr: High Reaches Weyr
Rider Rank: Junior weyrwoman
Previous Rank/Craft: n/a (was an unofficial apprentice cook)

Physical Description: Dagmara is tiiiiiny. She stands maybe just a bit over 5' tall, petite, but not at all "doll-like" or "delicate". A lifetime of working full-tilt in the kitchens has left her lean and surprisingly strong for her small size; she carries herself with more purpose than grace, quick and with precise, economic motion. Her face is roundish in shape, with large goldish-hazel-brown eyes, an average-size nose, and a slightly fullish mouth graced all too infrequently with a wide, delighted grin. Light golden-brown in complexion, she tends to freckle dark especially across her nose. Her hair completes her somewhat monochromatic colouring, tawny brown with a tendency to bleach golden at the tips from sun exposure. Tightly curly and frizzy, it's just long enough to brush the tops of her shoulders; she prefers to wear it knotted at the nape of her neck, though there are inevitably tufts of stray curly fluff which escape any attempts at control.

Ever practical, Dag dresses for comfort and ease of movement, though she can turn herself out when the occasion calls for it. She's generally seen in trousers and boots and some sort of button-up shirt

Personality: If she'd been left to pursue cooking, Dagmara would have become one of those creative, eccentric chef types who are equal part mad scientist and bodger, coming up with inventive recipes based on whatever is at hand. She still keeps her hand in as a cook, and will sometimes make special treats for the entire Weyr.

Dagmara still feels a bit like an outsider because she hasn't lived her entire life in the Weyr. The crash course in Weyr life and goldrider expectations she got has almost certainly had something to do with that as well. Dag is no delicate wilting little flower, but she feels like she's faking being strong and confident much of the time -- not that she's NOT strong and confident, because she is, very much so. Despite what she might think, Dag really is quite capable and competent. Her instincts are good, and she's at her best when she follows them (and she's getting better about the whole not-thinking, just-doing part).

When she is pissed off, she can be every bit as imperious and intimidating as the most imperious and intimidating master chefs of legend. Fastest way to piss Dagmara off? Be the cause of someone getting hurt. Dag loves the Weyr and its residents, both human and draconic, desperately. She gets the shakes after every Threadfall, taking every loss or injury as her own personal responsibilty/fault. Incompetence is something she will not tolerate (yeah, a bit of transference of her own insecurities and perceived inadequacies).

Positive Trait List strong-willed, competent, fierce, instinctive
Negative Trait List insecure, outsider, lacks confidence, feels inadequate

History: Dagmara is Western Weyr-bred, the daughter of kitchen staff working in the Lower Caverns. She grew up working in the kitchen under the Weyr's Head Cook's assistant, who happened to be her uncle, doing everything from peeling tubers to helping bake pies. Her goal in life was to become a Head Cook herself someday, and with this in mind she worked her way onto the kitchen staff under her uncle's guidance as his unofficial apprentice.

This all changed when she was around 16. There was a Hatching imminent at High Reaches Weyr, and as was customary between High Reaches and Western, there was a Candidate swap -- a number of Western Candidates were being flown over to Stand for the High Reaches clutch on the Sands. Also as was customary, the Western folk brought over some of their staff to assist; her uncle insisted on bringing Dagmara as a guest/apprentice, and that's how Dagmara ended up paying her first ever visit to High Reaches Weyr.

Not that she got to see much of it at first. She ended up under the very watchful scrutiny of Headwoman Padmia, who as one might expect was just tolerant of the assist from Western for the Hatching Feast. At one point, the Assistant Headwoman shooed the girl off to the tiers to at least catch part of the Hatching and enjoy what she could of it. Dagmara went reluctantly, concerned that her pies would be ruined if she didn't keep a watchful eye on them. Making her way to the tiers, she took a seat near the bottom (so she could scamper off if it turned out she wasn't supposed to be there) and watched as the chaos of a Hatching swirled around in front of her...

And then she found herself staring into the rainbow eyes of a glittering hatchling the color of tawny sand who was politely yet insistently asking her -- mentally, in her head -- where the food was; and everything was suddenly all good. Strange and most definitely unexpected, but good.

Along with the standard Weyrling training, Dagmara learned the ways of High Reaches Weyr and the duties of being a goldrider there. High Reaches life was certainly quite different from Western life, and while most of it was (is) awesome, it still took a bit of adjustment. She still takes comfort in occasionally retreating to the environment she knows best, the kitchen. And promptly getting shooed out again by Headwoman Padmia.

DRAGON
Name: Faeth
Age: 4
Color: Gold
Size: 95'
Physical Description: Faeth is a bit on the large size for a queen. Her hide is a warm tawny gold that almost blends in with the sands of the Hatching Ground. Slightly chubby yet elegant in build, she is especially glittery and sparkly in full sunlight.

Personality: Faeth is a refined lady of a dragon, not aloof or snobbish, but possessed of a certain regal poise and grace in her manner. Intelligent and thoughtful, she knows how to respond in almost any situation, and does so with minimum fuss. She fancies herself something of an advisor and will offer her opinion whether it's wanted or not. She's also a bit of a busybody, especially when it comes to the boys. And she do like her boys. <3

Faeth is fairly vain and fastidious about her appearance and is quite fond of regular, leisurely baths and generous applications of oil. She's also fond of food and will consume maybe more than her shaire of herdbeasts. This gold is not the fastest in the air nor the most agile -- she flies like a bathtub under full sail, in fact; but don't she look gorgeous up there.

In Dagmara she has a partner who can reflect her own regal nature. She's Dag's big sister, sorority mom, and head cheerleader, and gives her the encouragement and confidence she needs. Not that Dag truthfully needs all that much reassurance, despite what she might think.

A couple small things that stood out.

Dagmara's only 20. We don't really find it realistic that she would have (at Turn 15/16) already worked her way up to the assistant of the Head Cook/Chef for a Minor Hold. Apprenticeship alone takes anywhere from 7-10+ Turns. If she was older, say maybe in her mid-20s, we could maybe see it...even that would be rather unlikely given there are so many other chefs and cooks officially trained that she'd be competing with, and ones that are older and more-experienced as well.

The Head Cook/Chef likely already has a second, well before Dagmara came along. So you may need to either adjust her age or her history because it's just very hard to be believable right now. It's okay if you had her the assistant of the assistant to the Head Chef, or they seemed to give her some favor with the hopes she would get to grow up and become the future assistant.

Secondly, the Weyr would not allow that large of a party, much less outsiders to come into their kitchens and work for them. We allow it in Swaps between Weyrs--but that's one Weyr's people (and not everyone) coming to assist versus strangers--and we had to OOCly figure out a way to allow Standidates and those aged-out at HR be present and available as a fair game mechanic. Outside of swaps, a Weyr would not allow something like that. Attendants wouldn't be allowed to come with the Holders and his wife or their children, especially not in that great of number. We allowed it once where the attendant was literally the +1 of the lady--instead of her husband or child, she brought them.

Even if Dagmara somehow did come over, Padmia would have never allowed someone else to "take over the kitchen". Not only does Padmia have her own Assistant Headwoman, but she has quite a sufficient staff. They are capable of feeding an entire Weyr + many guests from all over Pern, as well as families of the Candidates. Unless this family had a child on the Sands to watch, the invitation would have likely only gone to the Holder and his wife; if a child of theirs was on the Sands, the family could come, but no staff or attendants. Again, that's just now how it works.

So while I like the idea, this is going to have to be reworked a little.

Either she needs to be Searched officially like the other Candidates (perhaps only a day before similar to what I did with Yalizor? if you want her in-over-her-head); she could have gone to the Weyr if one of her own siblings was Searched as a Candidate -- and she Impressed instead. Or the whole scenario needs to be changed. Instead of coming from a Hold, she might have come from Western Weyr and was working there as someone n the kitchens helping from a Swap.

Thirdly, if you keep her as being Searched during the imminent Hatching, she would not have been dragged onto the Sands like that, much less against her will. F'dral would have never allowed it, and Searchriders know how to behave when their dragon finds someone eligible that late in the game. At that point, it literally is too late to bring them on the Sands. Perhaps, instead, she was shooed over to the tiers to at least catch part of the Hatching (it's not hard to convince someone to see a once-in-a-lifetime event) and then she Impresses? It's also possible no one Searched her at all and instead she just was encouraged by Padmia or the Assistant Headwoman or someone to at least enjoy what she could (provided we find a reason she was there)... They aren't heartless, and try to break up the work so everyone can catch some of the Hatching (depending how long/short it is).

I'm definitely not trying to stamp on your fun, but this just doesn't quite work. It breaks the game just a little too much. Cheri and I are happy to try to find a way to get you the backstory you want.

Last but not least--even as a gold rider, the kitchens are not a free-for-all space for riders (no matter how talented) to come and go as they please. Padmia runs a tight ship, and anyone coming in to take over, or suddenly use resources that she has not planned, will find themselves smacked with a wooden stick and kicked out. I'm more than happy to let Padmia and Dagmara butt heads--but the Headwoman is a very important role, even compared to that of a gold rider. ;3
