Name: Jaleeri
Age: 22
Nameday: 3555.01.28
Sexual Orientation: Demisexual
Craft: Woodcraft - Lumberjack
Rank: Candidate
Location: High Reaches
Physical Description: Jaleeri is on the taller side for a woman without towering over everyone, standing around 5'10. Her build is that of someone who has been doing manual labor her whole life, calloused hands and strong limbs alike. She doesn't go out of her way to exercise as her life keeps her constantly moving, both in her previous craft and now as a Candidate. She has dark brown hair that is just long enough to put in a tail, but when she wears it down it's about halfway between her chin and shoulders. She has brown eyes to match and tanned skin from working outdoors her whole life. She has a few scars smattered over her body from her previous work, though the largest and most prominent is one on her left thigh that she got from an accident when working in her former craft. She walks with a permanent and pronounced limp. Jaleeri prefers practical clothes when working but she's been known to clean up very nicely for feasts and celebrations.
Personality: Jaleeri was raised from a young age to understand that sometimes in life you didn't succeed. That didn't mean you quit, it just meant you tried again. She took that lesson to heart and even if she falls nine times, she'll get up ten. It's a valuable trait to have considering she's not the smartest among her peers and often times she has to re-do a test or take remedial classes in order for her to completely understand a concept or lesson. Writing, reading, and the finer disciplines in life were never her strong suit but subjects with definitive answers like math come much easier to her. While she is fit, her old injury prevents her from being as quick or agile as she once was. She's still strong and will get a task done that needs to be done, but she's usually the last to finish.

Despite these setbacks, Jaleeri's determination to see her Candidacy through either until she finds her partner or she ages out is palpable. Although lumberjacking is in her blood, she's come to find that she wants nothing more than to become a dragon rider. The flight from Lemos to High Reaches had her fall in love with the sensation of flying - it was far better than being up on top of any tree, she felt so free and limitless again - and she knew that if she could work hard and prove to a dragon she wasn't damaged goods, she could experience that daily. Thread and pain didn't scare her, nor the possibility of death. She works as hard as she can, often seeking out the Candidatemaster for extra help - or any peers that are willing to spend a few hours with her on lessons - and doesn't let any bumps in the road slow her down.

Underneath it all there is hope. Jaleeri is ever hopeful for many things, most of all to be chosen to remain at High Reaches by a gooey, unsteady on their feet dragonette. She's hopeful for the future of Pern, for the people that live there, for her to ace the test she studied so hard for, for things big and small. Despite the hand life gave her there's always a silver lining to the grey clouds and Jaleeri will always hope for the best even in the most dire situations.

With the good comes the not so good, of course. Jaleeri's impulsive nature has gotten her into trouble on many occasions. She doesn't bother thinking about what reactions her actions might cause, not until she's in a scuffle with other kids in the creche or doing extra chores for speaking out of turn in class. She doesn't mean to cause a scene or create a disturbance, but her mouth certainly works faster than her brain in most cases.

Going hand in hand with her impulsiveness is her recklessness. Jaleeri will willingly throw herself in harms way to get something done, as proven by her bad leg. She isn't looking to be a hero or to make a name for herself, but she often finds herself in dangerous situations that could have been avoided if she'd simply thought for a few moments first. The rush of adrenaline she gets from being in dangerous situations is probably what encourages it, the injuries she sustains worth the high. She longs to be able to fight Thread, flying while searing the silvery enemy from the sky.

While Jaleeri knows she's more accident prone than she should be, she does little to try to change her habits and patterns. Her mother used to say she was like a wooden door on a hot, humid summer day due to her stubborn ways. Jaleeri can really dig in her heels when she wants to and doesn't take no for an answer, won't accept help if she feels the task is something she can do herself, and won't let a subject drop until she's satisfied with the outcome. It's easy to find her too intense of a person given her traits and as a child she was often told that she focused too hard on things, trying to do them in a way that was perfect to her. It has carried over to her young adulthood, though in new situations and with new experiences it rears its head less. It's when she's comfortable in her position that the stubborn streak comes out to play.
Positive Trait List Determined. hopeful, persistent
Negative Trait List Stubborn, reckless, impulsive
History: Born to a single mother in Lemos, Jaleeri grew up as any child would. She had a loving if small family (just her and her mother), a group of friends to play and horse around with, and a set destiny in front of her: to become a lumberjack and harvest the plentiful forests of her hold. Her mother's family had been lumberjacks for generations and Jaleeri was more than happy to follow in their footsteps. She grew up among the trees and learned from her mother as she grew, prepping her for when she was old enough to become a true Apprentice. Her favorite part of the job was climbing the tall trees to bring them down in pieces if there was not room to fell the whole tree at once. Being up so high made her feel as if she were flying. Unfortunately, lumberjacking as a craft had many dangers and when she was only ten Turns old, her mother was victim to an incorrectly felled tree. Jaleeri was surrounded by the members of her craft and hold with love and support, but it was never the same without her mother.

It was when she was fourteen that Jaleeri was injured. A younger lumberjack apprentice wasn't paying attention to where limbs were falling from a tree above and, true to her impulsive nature, Jaleeri did the first thing that came to her mind: charge forward, shove the young boy out of the way, and end up with a crushed leg for her efforts. The branch had pinned her to the ground and it took a score of lumberjacks to free her. By the time she got to a healer she'd passed out from the pain, and when she awoke she was told she was lucky to be alive. Memories of her mother's own death pervaded her mind, making the normally gumptious girl a shell of who she once was, withdrawn and quiet. The wound was slow to heal and even with the skilled help of the healers, the way the bones had broken made it difficult to set properly. As Jaleeri was permitted to walk it became evident that her gait was permanently changed, a limp marring her usual confident stride.

Although lumberjacking had now caused her mother's death and her own permanent handicap, Jaleeri didn't let the limp nor the near-constant pain stop her from getting back into her craft. No sooner had she been cleared to return to work than a Searchrider showed up to invite her to High Reaches. It was a difficult decision to make, but ultimately she agreed to go. A dragon had seen something within her so surely there was a chance - even a small one - that she might find a partner of her own. And, if she didn't, she could always come back to Lemos to pick up where she'd left off.

Thread returned not long after she became a Candidate and Jaleeri's desire to become a dragon rider only strengthened. Now it was no longer just a traditional, honorable role but an important one, one that the entire planet relied on to survive. With every passing Turn Jaleeri grows a bit more eager, knowing her time on the Sands has a limit, and she hopes there's a dragon not yet shelled that will call her name.
Other: Heavily inspired by this song

There's only one thing that is keeping me from approving this, and it's the fact that Jaleeri is in near-constant-pain. Is she still in so much pain? The limp is fine, as is the injury--but I worry that the constant pain could be offputting to a baby dragon, or cause them to worry themselves Between.

Injuries and chronic pain is common in a Weyr, yes, but usually it is dealt with by adult dragons who have a better grip. Putting someone in constant-pain by eggs or baby dragons is questionable.

How bad is the pain? I could understand it flaring during storm systems moving in, or the worst of winter months--but she will need to be able to march and walk, and keep up.

I think once hat's clarified or tweaked, she's good to go! biggrin

It's definitely gotten to a manageable level as she's gotten older, it really only flares up if she overuses it. She's used to using numbweed/icing it/other painkilling tactics to help it settle down and I'm sure she'd be extra cautious around touching/hatching times to make sure it's not overwhelming to the bbs <3

So long as it's manageable. She will be using her legs a LOT as a rider -- and will be expected to march and do drills and generally be on her feet as much as she's in the air. That said, should be all right so long as she can keep up with the rest.
