Name: Nedemar (N'dem or N'mar should he Impress)
Age: 23
Nameday: 3554.09.24
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: ???
Craft: N/A
Rank: Candidate
Location: High Reaches Weyr
Physical Description: Nedemar stands about 5'10"with a trim but otherwise relatively average build. His thick hair is a darker brown than his sisters, with some natural red and blonde highlights. It's grown out some since coming to the Weyr, though he never lets it grow past his shoulders, and gets it trimmed in a new style every Turn or so. His eyes are blue-green, and his skin relatively pale. He's sturdy on his feet, and has a build of a runner; while he's not overly muscled, he keeps himself in decent shape.

Personality: Nedemar is a young man who might be called a go-getter. He is the sort of person who wakes up ready to hit the day running, and once he has mind on a task, nothing will stop him until it's completed. He could be called earnest, and is quite eager to show both his peers and superiors that he's the man for any job. There is no task too great for this man, and while he certainly has failed many challenges in his life, he likes to think of his failures as simply one more step towards success.

Whether that's true remains to be seen. Self-assured and confident, Nedemar knows his strengths and uses them to the best of his ability. He was brought up thinking he would have to run an entire Hold, after all, and can be as charming and sociable as one might expect. No one would ever dub him as an anxious being, and he has no doubt that whatever he wants, he will someday get. Perhaps not immediately, but in due time--of this he is most, even arrogantly, certain.

It's that sort of confidence and certainty that can cause him to be reckless. While he likes to think himself as a patient man, the reality is he isn't. He is known to rush into things without knowing the full story, or taking risks into account. He is known to fly by the seat of his pants, and sometimes, the results can be disastrous. Lying in wait isn't something he's known for, spurned on in part from his over-eager nature. Instead of waiting for a fellow who is late, he might go on and do a task himself--and find it twice the trouble; instead of following a recipe by the book, to save some time, he might think to improve it by cutting corners. Surely, it's a small change, nobody would notice... In some cases, things work out without any trouble; in others, it's caused him nothing but trouble.

To further stir trouble, Nedemar is highly-competitive. A desire to best the competition is always lurking; if he wants something, and someone else gets it, he can be put in a mood most foul and then will stop at nothing to try to better them! Winning can become an all-or-nothing situation for Nedemar--there is no 'second is best'. You either win or lose, and Nedemar only wants to win. He can make almost anything a competition and Faranth forbid someone out right challenge him. Walking away isn't an option for Nedemar...unless that's the only way to win.

Positive Trait List Self-Assured, Fearless, Eager
Negative Trait List Competitive, Reckless, Impatient
History: Nedemar was the second-born child in the minor Hold of Midling. For much of his life, he grew up beneath his older sister's shadow, or at least, that's how he felt he was. As the presumed heir to Midling, he was groomed from a young age to one day take his Father's place. While it wasn't something he actually wanted or desired, two things kept him on the path: what he presumed were his Father's wishes, and, most importantly, a knowledge that his sister Madanee wanted the title herself.

Their relationship was strained in ways Nedemar never quite understood--and still likely doesn't. But Nedemar was just as competative as his sister, and despite his own interests and desires, he pursued his studies as a prospective heir and future Holder doggedly. Besides which, even if he wasn't named heir, there was a good possibility he'd be married to either a fellow Holder's daughter. Even if he didn't run Midling, there were cothold's and minor Hold's a plenty that might wish to be allied to Midling. So it was, Nedemar was studious in abiding his Father's wishes.

He would become the heir, one way or another--whether Madanee liked it or not. Not because he wanted it, but because he could--and what a fine day it would be when he won!

So it was, the Turn's passed, and Nedemar grew up to a fine young man, with good prospects. But Thread returned when he was but 18, and changed everything. Life had been difficult before, following in his Father's footsteps, assisting the Steward, and helping where work was needed; but after Fall, there was so much more. If High Reaches Weyr had not been so dutifully prepared, he knew that the damage to Midling would have been great, indeed. Though casualties were minor, enough damage was done for Nedemar to realize just how unprepared Pern had been.

Forever grateful to High Reaches Weyr, Nedemar perhaps idolized the Weyr more than he should. He was always one to volunteer to work with the Ground Crews post-Fall, and was ever enchanted when he'd get to report to whatever sweepriders came through post-Fall. Like many a man on Pern, especially knowing the sacrifice with Thread's return, Nedemar couldn't help but daydream what it might be like. The Hold needed him, and his Father, and he was grateful to be born with such a rank and title... but the real heroes were bonded to the great dragons of Pern.

But he never really let himself consider the occupation of dragonriding. He was too sensible for such a daydream, fancy as it might be. But not a full Turn later, riders visited Midling for Search, and of all the individuals to be selected, it was Nedemar! He accepted without hesitation, much to his Father's surprise and initial objection. Let Madanee have the Hold -- Nedemar was going to Impress a dragon. The fact he was Searched at all was something unique, something special, and something his sister didn't have.

Ha!

More importantly, it was something he genuinely wanted. For the first time in his life, he was doing something that he chose to do. Sure, there was a chance he might never Impress, but Nedemar was making new experiences. Surely, a dragon would want him -- and together, they could flame down the great Enemy, and make a real change on Pern.

The Weyr was a bit of culture shock to the young man, but he settled in relatively well. There were pretty girls (and boys) to admire, and there were dragons, and he had no sister competing with him, and no one telling him how to live, or what to do. He was a free man--all he needed now was the dragon. Alas, he did not Impress his first Hatching. Or his second. Or his third. Or any of the Hatchings since. For five Turns he's been waiting... and though he's impatient to finally find His, he knows that greatness takes time.
l
His turn will come... eventually.

Other: He is in possession of a pair of flits, brown and green: Steward & Fancy
