Himitsu sat in his stone cave behind Saegahara, sifting through the stack of personnel files he'd been handed by the Hokage. After a disagreement between the two regarding the utility and trustworthiness of new and soon-to-be Genin as classified couriers, Himitsu had been ordered to organize an instructional team of Genin. Although he wasn't thrilled about the idea of teaching, he was grateful he at least had to been assigned to the Academy.
It didn't take Himitsu long to select his team, having been familiar with a handful of the candidates. The instant he saw Yui's name in the stack, she'd filled a spot. Just a few people later, he spotted Hitoshi Hoshigaki. Himitsu studied the file closely a couple of time, as it didn't seem to align with what he remembered of the genin, but he was a promising prospect nonetheless. The third and final spot was a more involved debate, but the Uchiha eventually settled on Kuma Mori. According to the file, he was a puppeteer like Yui, with a talent for genjutsu. Notes in the file also mentioned the boy's quiet nature, a perfect fit with the other two.
With a full team selected, Himitsu wrote up the official team filings and made his way to the Hokage's... Area. He turned in the paperwork to the clerk in charge of static team organization, taking the time to flirt a little and flex his fame in order to get her to register his team as the new Team 1. With Kai and Sumika both effectively M.I.A., and Miki and Himi on the outs, the OG Team 1 roster was dead in the water. Himi was struggling with letting *plenty* of other things go, and wasn't ready to add his team name to the list.
Nearly half an hour and a promise of a date later, Himitsu had successfully registered himself, Yui, Hitoshi, and Kuma as the new Konoha Squad 1. He'd also managed to sift through some of the new incoming missions and found one that piqued his interest. Now he just needed to actually put everyone together. Or at least, have it done. A few handseals and a stomp later, three tint bears poofed into the space before the Uchiha. "Hey guys. Need a favor. I need each of you to take an envelope, and deliver it to the person on the front of the envelope. All the info is there. Once they get it, just head home! Thanks boys!" They bears nodded and scattered quickly, dashing off to various parts of the village to find their marks. Satisfied with his work, he flashed a single handsign and warped home to his FTG seal to rest for the morning.
In the evening, just after most people would have just finished their dinner, Hitoshi, Yui, and Kuma would be approached by a tiny grizzly, panda, and polar bear respectively. Each carried a small envelope with the recipient's face and address on it. The bears would each approach respectfully and hand over the envelope slowly so as not to startle anyone, before poofing away in a vall of smoke. Each bear but the panda bear meant for Yui, who squealed and waved at hee before approaching quickly for a hug before handing over the note and poofing away with a wave. Inside each envelope contained a simple note, personally addressed to each genin.

He slid the whetstone against the edge of his naginata one final time before pocketing the item. For a few moments he inspected the blade before finally nodding to himself and returning the weapon to its resting spot on his back, satisfied with his work. With his weapon maintenance complete the time had finally come for him to resume the hunt, so he exited the village gates towards the site where his prey had been last spotted. It was only around a mile away, so he would be there in no time.
Today, his prey was to be a lusteraptor. Not a particularly strong foe, but for him one that should prove to be a bit of a challenge. Hitoshi had prepared for this though, reading up on their behaviors and habits and even asking a few more experienced monster hunters for advice. He was as ready as he’d ever be to take one on, now all he had to do was find it. That, however, was proving to be more difficult than he anticipated.
It was here, in a small clearing, where he found the evidence that his target had been around not very long ago. The fresh corpse of a cow was exactly where the one who’d provided him with the mission had told him it would be. The corpse was only half-eaten, however. That made sense, since the man had told Hitoshi that he’d come across the lusteraptor while it was in the middle of its meal. These creatures were known to be quite cowardly, so it was likely that the presence of a human spooked it into fleeing out of fear that the one would bring many more.
Hitoshi’s lips curled up into a predatory smile. It was right to be afraid. This cow had fought back. He knew that, because he could smell it. This lusteraptor wouldn’t be escaping from him anytime soon. There was no time to waste, however, so he was quickly on the move, following the tracks and the smell that his query had left behind.
It didn’t take the man young to find it. The sight of movement ahead gave him pause, so he chose to hide behind a nearby tree. There, straight ahead of him, were three lusteraptors. Hitoshi couldn’t believe his luck, the smile that had been on his face since he caught the injured one’s scent still present. Triple the prey would mean triple the reward, and one of them was injured to boot! He could see it, limping alongside its fellows as its lifeblood slowly trickled down its back right leg.
He didn’t waste any time. They hadn’t noticed him yet, and he would use that to his advantage. Unsheathing his naginata, he swings the blade in the direction of his foes with chakra imbued into the tip of the blade. Before him, a five foot wide chakra blade slashes through the air towards the center of the small group. Though the chakra blade is not wide, he used this technique because at that moment they were traveling closely grouped together. It proves to be a good decision, because even though one is able to notice and jump out the way, the other two aren’t so lucky. One gains a fresh new injury for its troubles and the other, unlucky, previously injured one, is cut down before the battle can even start.
The two remaining lusteraptors begin to hiss at him, but Hitoshi isn’t listening, for he is already on the move. The one that had been injured by his attack was now weakened and, sensing blood in the water, he would capitalize on that weakness. The young man dashes at his marked prey, deftly dodging the near countless number of senbons of light they both fired towards him. Finally, imbuing chakra into his whole body in order to boost his speed, he darts around their attacks and behind his target.
It didn’t stand a chance. His spear coated in chakra to further increase his speed, and now in the proper fighting stance for his preferred Doki Yari fighting style, Hitoshi’s spear creates half a dozen holes in the lusteraptor’s hide in the span of only a few seconds. Hitoshi kicks the dead creature off of his spear before cautiously turning to face his remaining opponent, aware that this one wouldn’t be quite as easy to take down.
He’d easily killed the two injured lusteraptors. This one, however, was not injured. It, also, was a cornered animal, and Hitoshi knew that meant it would fight all the harder for it. That was why he wasn’t surprised when it was immediately on top of him. It jumped up, coming down to bite his head clean off. He responded by smacking its ugly face away with the butt of his spear, followed by bringing the bladed end up into a slash to cleave that head from its neck. The counter-hit came too slowly though, and the luceraptor darted back out of its range. Before Hitoshi could make any further moves, the two frills on the side of the raptor’s head unfurled, and his sight and hearing were immediately taken from him in a deafening flash.
Cursing himself for his carelessness, with eyes shut tight, Hitoshi does all he can think to in his current predicament. A shroud of water covers his body, shielding him from further attacks while also enhancing his speed and strength. Just in time too, as he feels the lusteraptor’s jaws clamp tightly against his arm. He grimaces, as he can feel that if he waits any longer that the monster will bite right through his shield. Still, he’s unable to see, so all Hitoshi can do is scream.
So, that’s exactly what he does. He releases a low-pitched, guttural howl that booms forth, striking the lusteraptor right in the face and blowing it back against a tree. The shroud of water that still covers his body, enhancing him, allows his follow up attack to land almost as quickly as its back hits the tree, pinning its corpse there. It is over.
Several minutes later, once Hitoshi has regained his sight, he opens his eyes to see a small grizzly bear standing before him. Before his mouth can open to voice his confusion at being approached by a creature that would normally avoid humans (not to mention the fact that it was holding a letter in its paws), it hands him a letter bearing (hehe, that was a pun) his own face before immediately vanishing into a puff of smoke. Ah, so it was a summoning. He wondered whose. The only summoned species he was familiar with was the fish, and even then he wasn’t that familiar with them.
Reading the note satisfied his curiosity for the most part. He was assigned to a squad… again. Ugh, the last time didn’t exactly work out. That… was partially his fault though. Hopefully it would go well this time?
Hitoshi looks down at his throbbing arm where the lusteraptor had bitten him, blood trickling down his arm from several spots where its teeth had punctured through his veil of water and into his arm.
Uh, maybe he’d get this looked at first.
And so, it was with a sloppily bandaged arm that Hitoshi turned up to Takijinsei Falls the next day at 7am. Unfortunately, his own medical skills left a lot to be desired.

It had been a pretty taxing day for Yui, busy with more of Dr. Crea's many trainings and such. She had been in the middle of their usual dinner out while the doctor was busy chewing on a stray piece of cooked pork. "You've made exceptional progress for somebody your age. This would have drained even the most prepared of chuunin." Crea said, watching as her pupil scarfed down yet another bowl of her cooking. Yui smiled a little and would continue her eating while the older woman would stir the bit of the chop across the plate while her eyes traced along the girl's hair as she'd take a small bite. "You should exercise more caution, though. If you keep expelling more chakra than is needed, you'll end up needing help. not the other way around." Yui wiped her mouth and reached to scratch a couple of more things before then showing it to Crea. " I've been practicing like you said and everything, but it's still not working. I can't get better at it overnight. " The doctor read her response before smirking while eyeing a stack of paper concealed underneath some of the table besides them. She hesitated and reached for it before turning back to the younger girl. "I actually wanted to ask you something since we began your training. I know it's been a bit hard for you recently, and I have been allowing you to stay here out of generosity, but I was thinking-"
A knock was heard at the door. Well, more like a pawing. In fact, it was like something was knocking down the door. Yui jumped up before Crea could and went to open up just to be face to face with a panda?! She smiled widely and opened her arms to hug the bear before handing over the note as she read it carefully. Yui seemed delighted to be placed in a Squad finally. She moved back to sit with Crea as she looked over at the older woman. " Sorry! I got invited to a squad and they want me to meet them there tomorrow morning! Did you want me to see something? " Crea paused, glancing back to the paper again before pushing away and meeting Yui's gaze. "Oh, it was nothing! We should get dessert to celebrate." She said while standing up and moving to the fridge, glancing about for something that looked celebratory. Dango maybe? "So much for that little surprise. I suppose I can wait a while longer to welcome her into the family." she said under her breath while reaching for the dango.
The following morning, Yui was up super early and arrived at the top of Takijinsei Falls. SHe was the second to arrive, right next to another boy who was sporting a pretty serious looking wound. Her eyes narrowed on the sloppy handwork while fussing at him. With her notebook open, she'd scratch off a page and show it to the man. " Are you with Squad 1? Let me see your arm, you're going to get it infected with that kind of bandaging. " Just like Crea, though Yui didn't exactly know that.

"Begin!" The shout startled Kuma, who found himself standing in the center of a wooded training field, opposite a classmate. The instructor that had barked the starting command vanished in a blur as soon as this sparring match had commenced. Apparently this was meant to somehow simulate a real combat experience. No bystanders. No peers. No lifelines…
Despite his apprehension, Kuma knew this was an important step in the academy's training process. Even if they had a surface level knowledge that they were still being watched, the heat of the battle would likely wash away their awareness of that fact and force them to make decisions as if this truly were life or death. The idea of engaging in actual combat was a tough pill to swallow for such a timid boy; but, if he truly wanted to become a shinobi, it was a necessary one.
As the boy across from him drew a kunai and took a preparatory stance, Kuma took this opportunity to get himself ready as well. He reached within the pouch kept hidden beneath his coat and withdrew a small scroll, allowing it to drop to the ground and unfurl. A series of simple handseals was met with a puff of smoke that wafted away to reveal a humanoid wooden construct that was stood slightly shorter than Kuma. He wasted no time forming chakra threads that attached to its various joints, the puppet springing to life in response.
His opponent understood this as a declaration of readiness and darted in. Kuma formed another seal and formed a dense chakra cloud around his body, invisible to the naked eye. What started as a slight shift in the air around him quickly turned into a particularly effective camouflage. As the distance between them shrank, so too did the boys perception of Kuma's form. His clothes, hair, and skin all faded out of sight. Evident confusion on his sparring partners face gave Kuma enough of a window to dodge the initial strike and leap a few feet away, leaving the puppet where it was.
The puppet reacted to the twitching motions of Kuma's fingers and whirled around with a punch, catching the opponent off guard. It wasn't very strong, but it didn't need to be. Kuma's plan was to maintain the Chameleon Skin technique and wear his opponent out. A war of attrition felt more his style. However, that would only work if he kept the pressure on. Any windows to survey the area would give his position away instantly, on account of the chakra strings attached to the puppet. Of course, he could sever them and reattach them as needed, but that would only drain his chakra faster. Without knowing what his foe was capable of, wasted chakra was dangerous.
Another attempted punch from the puppet was thrown, but this one was blocked. The kunai the boy has been holding was tossed in Kuma's direction. A feat that surprised the white haired lad. Clearly he needed to give more credit to his peers…. Or hide his chakra threads better. Kuma barely dodged the knife, but it made a small cut on his cheek. The sharp sensation was enough to break his focus and disable his camouflage.
Kuma wiped the blood from his cheek and drew a kunai of his own, rushing in to retake the offensive. It wasn't his forte, but being put on the back foot in this engagement would wipe out his advantage and quickly diminish his chances at victory. The clanging of sharp steel released a plume of sparks. The two students struggled against the blades, trying to disarm one another before both decided to jump away.
While his opponent began forming hand seals, Kuma made a simple one of his own, using chakra to draw together moisture in the air. It wasn't much, just under a gallon's worth, but it would serve its intended purpose. Kuma allowed the water to drop, relinquishing his control, but not before weaving a secondary set of seals and pulling a water-forged sword out of its mass. As the bubble fell out of his vision, his eyes caught sight of an incoming orb of foxfire. His reaction time narrowly allowed him to connect a spealcialized chakra string to a nearby tree and pull himself out of the way.
Kuma had to adjust his plans slightly as his opponent rushed to where he would be landing. He was nearly drained on stamina, so this next series of moves had to decide the battle, an all or nothing gamble. Kuma released the chakra string early, crashing to the ground a few feet from his sparring partner. He rushed forward, using his sudden attack to hide the new series of strings he had sent to his nearby puppet. It sprang to life, and rapidly closed in on their location, but not before stumbling into the puddle left behind by Kuma's water manipulation.
He instructed the wet puppet to launch a series of punches and kicks, aiming less to actually land them, but more so to draw attention towards it. Kuma waited, preparing his chakra and the required seals, rounding behind his opponent while they were focused on the puppet. His opponent readied a strike towards the construct that would make it virtually unusable. Kuma, as a counter measure, launched the first of the techniques he had prepared for. The water covering the puppets wooden surface shimmered slightly before becoming a reflective surface. Kuma stared into the eyes of his opponents reflection, and as soon as they met he launched the second.
His opponents eyes widened as the world around them seemed to warp. Simultaneously, they're surroundings seemed much too close and way too far away. The strike meant for the puppet was sent off course, missing its wooden body by a hair. Kuma seized this opportunity, having his puppet grab onto the student and pin them to the ground. Kuma readied his blade of water and pointed the tip at their neck. Just before he could land the final blow, the instructor reappeared and stopped the fight.
A few days later
Kuma was alone at home. The kind elderly couple that had been caring for him were out running errands, which meant he had to eat dinner alone. This didn't bother him, though. In fact, he preferred the quiet sometimes. It gave him time to think, to plan. Especially after his sudden promotion to genin. After that sparring match the other day, the instructor had given him a letter from, presumably, the Hokage. It was officially signed by Sadayo Soga, but Kuma was still relatively reluctant to believe it. Apparently the letter had been sent a few days prior, but the instructor wanted to use the match as a final test before giving Kuma the news.
Up in his room, sitting in the middle of the floor, Kuma had dismantled his puppet and was pouring over the pieces. All in all, the constructs performance wasn't bad. In fact, it did better than he initially expected. However, he knew it wouldn't be enough for long. He knew that eventually he would need to add components to his doll, but after being made aware of his promotion, he now felt as if it was a much more important decision. Hidden weapons and tools that he could use. Until then, it was just a piece of wood being parades around. Even with those thoughts in mind, he wasn't really sure where to start. Kuma was still a novice at puppeteering. Hidden weapons, poisons, tools… all of that was still foreign to him.
The longer he spent drawing a blank on the subject, the less any of it made sense to him. Eventually he just decided to put the puppet back together again. Each joint socketed into their slots nicely. He set the reassembled figure up into a sitting position, then crossed his legs in front of it. "What am I going to do with you…?"
There wasn't much time to think about it. He needed to get some rest soon. He had received a letter from a strange bear a few hours ago, summoning him to meet with his official squad assignment in the morning. He begrudgingly made his way to his bed and closed his eyes, drifting off in a sea of dreams.
The next morning
Kuma appeared to be the last of the students to arrive. Takijinsei falls wasn't a place he was too familiar with, and remembering the way there took a bit longer than he thought it would. He had even left earlier than he normally would. When he arrived, one of the other squad members was presenting a paper to the other. Exactly what, he wasn't sure. Kuma did one final check of his pockets, making sure he had the scroll his simple puppet was sealed in, as well as a small number of shuriken and kunai, then approached the two quietly. I figured you'd all socialize a little before I showed up." The jonin walked past the scattered genin to the river's edge, where he knelt down and drank from the stream before standing and facing the team. Alright, well then... Welcome to Squad 1. Each of you is here is because you were listed as a young, new, and/or underperforming Genin." The Uchiha let "underperforming" hang in the air for a moment, letting the doubt creep in. "That being said, my assigned mission with this squad is to make you valid Chunnin candidates. I'd like to do that as soon as possible, so I assure you I took none of you from the "underperforming" category. That would just be counterproductive." He smiled at the group briefly before the smile faded.
"Okay, so... Ground rules. There aren't many, so I expect you follow them well." With a stern look, Himitsu held up one finger. "Rule Number 1; The three of you will look out for one another, in and out of the field. You don't have to be friends, but you'll work together as if you are. No exceptions. If you bully or abandon a teammate, the ending of your shinobi career will be the least concerning outcome. Clear? Clear." A second finger popped up quickly. "Rule Number Two; While in the field, what I say goes. I say jump, you don't worry about 'how high' until you're in the air. As things stand, I have far more environmental awareness with my eyes closed than the three of you have collectively during an adrenaline dump. Listen close, stay alive." Himitsu's third finger shot up. "Third and final rule; From this moment on, regardless of how either of us feel about it, you three are now considered my students. So I expect each of you to work hard and constantly be making improvements. Nobody expects you to make JUEI in a week, but everyday your form should be a little tighter, your seals a little faster, and your hits a little stronger. Don't make me regret selecting you." Himi stood quietly with his three fingers out for a few seconds before dropping his hand and relaxing again. A faint smile found its way back to his face as he seemed to shift gears once more.
"Right, well, with the formal stuff out of the way, let's get into the easy part. I'd like for everyone to share their name, your strongest or favorite skillset, and if there's anything in particular you'd like our help you learn or improve on. Let's start.... with.... You!" Himitsu looked and nodded at Hitoshi, feigning ignorance as if he hadn't poured over their personnel files over several hours.

If Hitoshi was being totally honest, his patience was starting to wear thin. He could only blame himself for having to wait so long though, having arrived particularly early. Now that he thought about it, he wasn't sure why he'd been so excited to meet his teammates. Sure he hadn't made any friends since moving into the village, but he had his adoptive mother so he'd never been alone. At least, he didn't think he felt lonely? He shouldn't, since keeping to himself had been the norm out of necessity to hide the inhuman features his blood granted him but... huh. So he'd been looking forward to being on a team all this time and hadn't even realized it...
What if they hated him? What if they looked at his scales with disgust and wanted nothing to do with him, kicking him off the team without giving him a chance? Damn it! He knew he should have worn long sleeves today but he just-
The distinctive sound of someone writing something down on a piece of paper broke Hitoshi out of his downward spiral. "Don't be an idiot. This isn't your old village, you already know it won't be the same." Doing his best to shake such negative thoughts out of his head, Hitoshi turned his attention to the piece of paper being presented before his face. He found... vaguely familiar handwriting. After reading what was written on the page he looked at the one holding it to confirm what he already knew. There was only one girl he'd met in the village who communicated in this way after all. "Oh! Uh, sure. Thanks, Yui. I'm sorry. I was... careless, yesterday." Without complaint, the tall man sat on the ground to allow the shorter girl better access to his arm, secretly glad to be on a team with someone who he was at least vaguely acquainted with, even if they'd only met once briefly.
The two of them would continue to wait in silence for some time, their third team member arriving at some point while Yui was fixing his poor attempt at bandaging his wound. The boy seemed to be a quiet one though, maintaining his distance from the both of them in silence as well. Being a quiet person himself, Hitoshi would simply raise his free hand in what he hoped was a friendly wave. His two companions remained silent and, uncomfortable with the idea of being the one to break it, Hitoshi simply sat and let Yui do her work.
The three of them didn't need to wait long, however. The man who next arrived was also a familiar face. In fact, he was the one who he and Yui had sparred against back when Hitoshi was still an academy student, though unlike Yui he couldn't remember the man's name. Unfortunately, the man wouldn't make things easy on him, not giving any of them his name as he began his opening speech. Hitoshi tried to focus on that and not on wracking his brain to try and remember his name. That only made him even more nervous though so, when he was called upon to speak, he ended up blurting out "what's your name!?"
A beat of silence...

"My name is Hitoshi Hoshigaki." Hitoshi started speaking once again, almost as if completely ignoring his earlier outburst would make it go away. His face, however, which burned a bright red at this point, would ultimately betray his embarrassment. "I'm... decent with a weapon, though I prefer spears and swords. I'm also told that I'm alright at Ninjutsu, though I'd consider the water element my specialty in that regard." Whether uncomfortable or unused to speaking highly of himself, he was unable to speak with confidence. "As for things I'd like to improve on... I haven't really thought about that." That was a lie. He'd thought too much about the topic. "Probably either Genjutsu or sealing jutsu. Anything that will help me hunt monsters. I just want to help people." All talked out, Hitoshi shrugged helplessly when he finished talking and looked to Yui to see whatever she ended up writing in that notebook of hers, eager to have the spotlight off of himself.

Yui looked up at Hitoshi, her eyes showcasing that she didn't think ill towards the boy whom she had met already. It was hard for the mute medic to really stay angry at anybody. When you had crippling issues with people leaving areas you were familiar with, it was hard to hold a grudge. She just happily worked on that wound of his while using her previous medical training from Crea to go and see about cleaning the wound in full and bandaging it. "It's ok, Hitoshi! As long as you're not seriously hurt, I'll be happy." She continued to work in silence, their third person remaining silent while the river sounds nearby would fill in the void where they probably should have been speaking. Or at least as good conversation as two timid souls and a mute could provide. A little while after Yui had finished bandaging up the wound, Himitsu would walk up to the three and welcome himself into the group meeting. The smallest medic of the group offered him a friendly wave as she'd sit by and allow him to take a drink of water...from the river...She furrowed her brows, wondering if the water up here was clean enough to drink from. But Himitsu was a tough cookie, so he would tough out any impurities in the water hopefully.
Hitoshi wasted no time in blurting out a question to Himitsu, asking his name in a loud fashion. The girl did blink several times, having thought he would have remembered because of their little spar they all had together a while ago, but it seemed like he had forgotten. No biggie though! Himitsu introduced himself to the three as Yui stood by the lower elevation bound shark boy, then went over a couple of rules. It was so strange to see Himitsu as a person now being like a leader to the group. It was vastly different from the guy who had found her crying over her puppet designs being thrown away by one of the academy bullies. She listened to each rule and felt all of them were pretty standard for how squads worked to her. But then came every genin's most stressful moment: introducing themselves to their teammates! Hitoshi went first in a more awkward and embarrassed fashion. She did find his little nervousness somewhat cute, and even gave him a little pat on the head as he would look to her, either for support or to go next. Regardless, Yui bounced forward to face the two as the youngest would flip to a few pages in her notebook quietly before showing the three.
" I'm Yui! It's nice to meet you guys, and you two again, Hitoshi and Himitsu! : ) " she flipped a page or so forward in her book and would show the next page, already pre written from the night before. " I'm best at my medical jutsu or with my soul ninjutsu. I've gotten good at them and can help out if you ever need it! I'm also good with puppets, but I haven't made my own yet... " Another sound of her rustling through the pages could be heard until she found the page she was looking for, farther down than the others. " I'm not good with taijustu or bukijutsu though. I get tired easily with that kind of stuff. But I want to get better some medical things and learning a weapon. " Content with her responses, she'd turn her book back around and give a pleased look.

The silence was deafening. The three genin probably could have spent the time having a conversation, or at the very least made small talk about the weather or some such trivialities. Kuma, however, was definitely not going to be the one to initiate that. His nerves were too tightly wound for that. Instead, he simply raised a hand in response to the other boy's silent wave. Besides, he quite enjoyed the silence. It gave him time to breathe and try to relax while they waited for the mystery leader who summoned them.
When he eventually showed himself and began speaking, Kuma felt relieved. The three of them being hand picked for being quiet was a good sign. If he had been placed on a squad with an over-eager, loud mouthed hot-head… Well, whatever would have happened doesn't matter. He seemed to have a prior relationship with the girl who was now bandaging a wound, referring to her as Yui. So, too, had the guy having his wounds mended. Kuma couldn't help feeling like the odd man out. Both of his squad-mates were already acquainted, and Yui was also acquainted with their leader. He wondered if the instructor and the other guy also had history together, but didn't want to ask.
Kuma's eyes widened when the word "underperforming" was used as one of criteria for the member selection process. He knew his promotion to genin felt sudden, and this all but confirmed it. Or, at least it should have. After letting the word hang in the air, the leader of this squad continued on to add that he had chosen them from one of the other genin categories. He breathed a sigh of relief. The ground rules that were being listed sounded strict at first, but they were logical. Work together, follow orders, and work hard. As far as he understood, that's what they boiled down to. The basic tenets that made up a good squad.
The real nerve-wracking part was the request for introductions. Thankfully the other two had gone ahead of him. Hitoshi mentioned being good with a weapon, but bad at genjutsu, while Yui was a medic who used Soul ninjutsu. Whatever that was. When it was Kuma's turn he swallowed hard to clear the lump in his throat before walking forward and turning to face the other two. "I-I'm Kuma," he started with a quivering voice. "I don't know if it's my strongest skill, but I-I like using genjutsu. I also know how to move a puppet around, but that's all I can really do with them." He turned his eyes to the ground and began tapping the tips of his fingers together nervously. "I guess if I had to say, I'd like to l-learn more about puppets, and improve on my skills as a shinobi in general. It's good to meet you all." Kuma hurriedly returned to his old spot, slightly removed from the group, with his heart pounding in his chest.

With introductions done, I think it's time to actually get started on today's training. Yui and Kuma, you're going to pair up to start. I want you running what I'm going to be calling SNAP Drills. They're easy. You're just going to spar with your puppets. I want each hit to be the loudest sound you can manage. If a puppet breaks, you fix it ASAP. If we end the drills and your puppet is broken, you lose. Winner of the day gets treated to dinner. Got it?" Himitsu waited a moment for questions, before moving on. He stepped away from the pair, toward the river edge, and gestures for Hitsohi to follow. "Your goal is even simpler. Strike me with a sword or spear. No genjutsu, no offensive ninjutsu. Start whenever you're ready." Himitsu gave his instructions clearly, then put some distance between the pair as he drew his windmill shuriken from his belt.

So two of them were puppeteers and one of them liked to use Genjutsu? They would be wonderful teammates for Hitoshi. At least, he assumed they would. He'd heard of those that fought by controlling various puppets, and had even met with the Hokage herself. He'd never actually seen it in action though, so he was looking forward to seeing how Yui and Kuma fought with them.
Unfortunately, he would have to wait a bit longer than he would have liked. It seemed that for their first meeting as a team he would be fighting his teacher... alone? What was the point? Shouldn't they have been training as a team rather than having Hitoshi fight an unwinnable battle against a freaking Jinchuuriki? He really wasn't sure what was going through Himitsu's mind then, but he guessed it didn't matter. He'd just have to do his best. Of course, not without a small amount of bending of the rules. Not being allowed to use offensive ninjutsu specifically didn't rule out his Second Sharkskin, a personal favorite of his. Not wanting to waste any time, Hitoshi activated the technique, allowing his body to be enshrouded by a thin film of water. Hitoshi felt no shame when he raised his spear to point at Himitsu's back as he walked away from him. They were ninja, after all, and he needed to take every advantage he could get against the stronger one. There was no point in trying to save his chakra against a monster like him so in the hope of ending the sparring match immediately with a single, decisive blow, he forced a large amount of chakra to jet out of the back of the spear, causing Hitoshi to rocket towards the other man in what would appear to be nothing more than a blur. As he approached his opponent he would aim for the center of his body with a powerful thrust. One that, if it came into contact with anything else, would cause a large explosion of chakra to detonate from the tip of the naginata. Breaking Line | Rank A > S+

Techniques Used • Second Sharkskin [ Ni hikime no same ] | Rank C The user channels charka around their body, creating a silhouette of water that encases them. This water offers it's own rank in protection against attacks while enhancing their speed and strength by [1] per rank of the cloak. This technique has an upkeep cost two ranks below it's execution with a minimum cost of 5 chakra. This technique inflicts tiered drench upon those who make physical contact with them. • Breaking Line | Rank S+ | Complex The user expels chakra from the pommel of the spear as though it were an exhaust point, propelling the user forward up to fourty feet. The user travels forward in a blur to anyone with lower agility than their speed, granting them two points in speed for the technique's execution. Upon impact, armors are treated as one tier lower while barriers and shield techniques are treated as one rank lower. If blocked by a technique of equal cost, the end of the pole-arm explodes with a secondary thrust, automatically deducting a supplementary A Rank amount of chakra from the user as a concussive A Ranked blast explodes forward from the weapon's tip to crush anything standing in it's way and causes an additional tier of trauma as well as vertigo from the knock back caused by the attack. If blocked by a higher cost defense this effect does not activate. •
The instructions were as follows. Step one, the two puppet-users would spar with their puppets. That part was simple enough. Step two, each hit was to be as hard and loud as possible. That was a bit outside of his comfort range, but still doable. Step three, if a puppet breaks they were to fix them immediately, and the winner of this sparring session was the one whose puppet was still in-tact at the end. The last part made Kuma swallow hard. He had this notion in his head that he possessed significantly less experience with puppets than the girl he’d be sparring with. He could put a puppet together well enough, but in the middle of a combative setting? On a timer? The odds looked decidedly stacked against him.
Regardless, that was the task they were given so he had to suffer through it for now. Win or lose didn’t seem to matter, so long as he adhered to the third rule of their leader, Himitsu. ”Work hard and constantly be making improvements.” He gave one more hard swallow and took a deep breath before reaching into the pouch on the back of his waist, hidden by his long white coat, and producing a scroll. ”A-alright,” he said, flashing a faint smile to Yui, a somewhat more serious look in his eyes. ”Let’s do our best!” Kuma pinched the paper of the scroll and let go of the rest, letting it unfurl as it dropped to the ground and revealed the sealing inscription it contained. Forming a seal with his free hand, a plume of smoke erupted from the inscription, blowing away to reveal a simple wooden construct, humanoid in shape, but lacking any real details or features. Thin strands of chakra shot forth from the fingers on his left hand and attached to the doll, causing it to spring to life. Kuma adjusted it’s pose until it was in a stance similar to a boxer’s.
