Kailani's pace propelling her through the water slightly slowed as she started to realize the time. She had been so good lately at getting back before her mother noticed she was gone. She didn't think she'd be so lucky this time. To her mother, it was a simple issue of never leaving their safe little lake home. To Kailani it was freedom. Fresh water flowing past her scales and fur felt more refreshing than the deepest part of their lake home, there was no explaining it.
Past experience had taught Kailani that excitedly telling her mother about her travels would be no help in assuaging her frustration with her. Hearing of the perceived dangers did nothing for ones nerves it seemed. Kai would have to think of something else to make her mother forget she had disobeyed her. With that in mind Kailani surfaced and started to leisurely inspect the bank as she passed. Maybe something would jump out at her.
Kailani plapped her front paws against the surface of the water as she passed. Sure she was in a hurry, but not so much she couldn't still enjoy herself. As long as she didn't get too distracted, Kailani could still make it back in record time.

Sylvicola was still a stranger in this land, not exactly newly arrived but still very much figuring out her place in the world and her way around. Leaving behind her home herd had been tougher than anticipated, she missed her fathers and extended family rather fiercely. They were not exactly wandering folk, but so many of them had told her stories about traveling when they were young, before they had found the loves of their lives. So why wouldn't she try for herself? Just to see? There was so much of the world waiting to be seen, she'd trot over as much as she could until she found the place that called itself home.
And until then, well, she'd make some friends and try new things and overall just live a little.
Living a little had lead her here, to a rather serene little lake set in a rather picturesque blend of forest at the foot of the mountains. A good place for foraging, not far from some of the gardens her new friends kept to grow their wild and elegant flowers. Not that Sylvi was exactly a flower type, she vastly preferred her moss and mushrooms and the carefully trimmed bonsai trees that had been a particular passion of her sires... But there was something to be said for gentle petals in pretty colors.
Of course, none of those were quite so interesting and unusual as the stranger splashing about in the shallows. Not exactly one to overlook an opportunity to experience something new, Sylvi cleared her throat politely and then stepped forward with a gentle flick of her tail and swivel of her ears.
"Greetings... if you'll forgive me for saying so, you seem to be looking for something? Could I help?"

It took a few words flowing into Kailani's ears before she realized someone was speaking to her. Kailani's feet stilled as she spun in a gentle circle before laying eyes on Sylvicola, face brightening as it registered there was another being here she could talk to. Her mother had once remarked the most Kailani mirrored her other mother was the step of her legs and the work of her mouth. Kailani wasn't entirely sure why her mother had blushed and Celestine had cackled at the comment. Kailani took great pride in being able to talk with anybody. And of course she knew they would all agree how their mother felt about her adventuring.
Kailani turned her circling course straight to Sylvicola and swam over to the edge of the river mouth that met the lake. In her excitement she fully forgot she hadn't actually met this Soquili before and launched straight into conversation before introducing herself. "Mom hates it when I explore deep down the river." Kailani turned her head, already wistfully looking to the route she may travel down tomorrow, or maybe the next day. All depending on how much she could get her mom to forget her transgressions. Kailani turned back to Sylvicola, taking a breath before continuing. "I was hoping there would be something on land so I could distract her and think maybe I hadn't spent all day exploring places I shouldn't. " Kailani's voice trailed out slightly as here eyes lost focus to peer at the landscape behind Sylvicola.
Kailani's eyes snapped back towards the other mare and she smiled. "Have you seen anything that may make a mom smile?"

Seeing as she's caught the stranger's attention, Sylvi keeps pacing forward until they're a conversational distance apart, perhaps slightly closer than polite and marching right into friendly. It doesn't escape her notice that the stranger does the same, so it seems they're in accord on the matter. Good. Friendly, to say the least.
"But it looks nice down there?" Sylvi offers with a tilt of her head, bright eyes sweeping down the river's path and then back. "Maybe there are cool fish or neat water plants or shiny rocks? Or interesting strangers on the banks you can talk to or trade with? Stories if not trinkets. Strangers with wings or hooves that have traveled a long way and can trade a story for an idea of what it's like down under the water where we can't comfortably go. I know I would."
She jumps right into the conversation without a thought of introduction when the stranger starts things, nodding her agreement at the little mare's hope for an interesting object to take back.
"Well, I'm not too familiar with down river." Sylvi admits, glancing back over her shoulder at the woods with a thoughtful sound. "Or mothers, really... But I have a few friends with gardens not far away. So, what if you told me a little something about her and I made her a flower crown or a bouquet or something... And you could take it back with you? The ladies are really good with their flowers, they tend to last a long time even after they're cut, so I imagine that would hold true even under water?"

Kailani found herself nodding in agreement as she listened to the mare on the banks talk of how beautiful the river was and the riches it may hold. Taking a moment to suck in a breath and hold it as she considered. In a quick release she made up her mind and smiled back at the mare. "I probably should try and find something that doesn't remind her I disobeyed her." her smile quarking mischievously to the side. "But those other ideas could work!" Kailani's little paws came to rest on the side of the bank to help pull herself out of the water a little, again unconsciously plippy-plapping in excitement. "Now that you mention it. If I can find someone to trade with me some land items, she won't think I left the lake at all!" She nodded her head excitedly as the idea sunk in and started to take shape. "That's a great idea ----!"
Kailani's face quickly shifted from confused at not knowing the name of the friendly mare in front of her, to horror that she had never introduced herself. A little squeek left her as the realization kicked in and she shyly sunk back into the water till only her eyes and hair could be seen. A slight stream of bubbles flowing out with her silent curses. Raising her head again saw the return of her smile. Quarked to the side again, though this time out of a slight bashfulness. "My name is kailani by the way. I'm sorry I forgot to introduce myself. I swear my mama taught me better manners." She paused in thought then burst into giggles. "Well, at least by one of them."
The mare's words finally sunk in past her embarrassment and her eyes lit up again. "You really wouldn't mind getting me something? Like flowers, you said? Wait. Crown?? That would be so cool!"

'Ok, so far so good, right? You're not doing so bad. You've made friends with a really interesting individual and now you have to help her think of a good gift for her mothers. Which you've never had but, they probably would be pleased enough to get presents like dads are... So you've got this.'
Sylvi gets to musing as she listens to the stranger speak about her mother, nodding contemplatively as it goes. "Right, something pleasingly surprising that doesn't tell the full story of maybe going where she would rather you not go..."
She cants her head in consideration, humming. "Well, I can't help with the trade part but a gift between friends, I could do. Since we're introducing ourselves and all, that sounds like friends, right? I'm Sylvicola, well Sylvicola Laccata but I promise just Sylvi works fine, and it's nice to meet you Kailani."
The unicorn cross mare gives a flash of a grin and tilts her head, considering a few things. "Hmmm, maybe a flower crown next time to sort of celebrate? And you can distract her from the next lake adventure? Lakeventure? Anyway... We could do a nice arrangement for her, I know there are plenty of options in the garden. Do you want to tell me some good colors or, if you've seen any surface flowers, I can try to get those again for you? It won't take too long to fetch them, there's a shortcut to the back garden just through the woods here. I can dart over there and be back quick as anything."

Kailani listened to Sylvicola talk through her predicament, not only was she pleased that the mare understood what Kailani was asking for, her excitement was growing as the mare went on. Slowly nodding her head in agreement, her smile widening as her nodding quickened from the excitement till finally she realized she must look crazy. The thought popped into her head just as Sylvi introduced herself. Kailani's nodding stopped and her mouth popped open in a little o shape.
"What a pretty name! Sylvi rolls off the tongue nicely." Kai lifted herself so she could rest her elbows on the bank as she listened to Sylvi mention a garden. "I've never seen a land garden before. Is it big?" Her tail fin broke the top of the water as she spoke, as if doing little kickies while lost in thought. She imagined hundreds of rows of flowers, only broken up by fruiting trees you couldn't see the tops of and hedges you could get lost in. Kai's mind stopped to a dead halt as she realized she didn't really know that many flower names to list off for Sylvi to collect. At least not ones found on land.
Kai puffed out her cheeks as embarrassment filled the rest of her. She held the breath for a moment as she searched her mind for any flower names her mother may have mentioned in her lifetime. The air in her mouth making a little poofing sound when she opened her mouth to reply. "Hrrrm. Do you think there are lillies there?" There, that was one! "And maybe lavender?" Kailani tried to search her brain for one more flower, her mind going lightning speed. "Oh oh! I think she has mentioned sun flowers before! But I hear those are big.... would they fit on a Seathi head?" Kailani's mind shifted full gear to try and imagine what size a sunflower really was, all other flower names forgotten.

"Oh, thank you." Sylvi gives a bashful duck of her head at the compliment, flashing her new friend a grin as she watches the little mare get comfortable in her little mix of riverbank and shallows. Her wings and tail are quite an interesting mix, and Sylvi has questions about swimming or flying underwater, but she supposed those could wait until next time. "Mmm, they can be. The ones that my friends keep are pretty good sized, with a range of flowers arranged in a few different beds and stretches. There's also a few fruit trees which are quite nice for snacking! I've seen smaller gardens where things are a little bit closer together because they're taking advantage of what they've got? So it's a bit of working with what you can handle, I think. My friends almost seem to live in their gardens, keeping flowers is their favorite. There's also a herd that keeps several gardens, they even have mazes made of roses and sunflowers, so they reach up higher than I am tall! But they're a bit north of where we are here."
Sylvi stops to listen to Kailani list lowers and then nods to herself. "I can work with that list, I think! You wait right here and I'll be back in a few shakes, alright?"
She gives a bright smile and then darts off into the trees, tearing up to the gardens to pick the requested flowers as quick as she can. There are indeed lilies, different from the river kind that she imagines Kailani would have seen before. There are white and pink, so she takes a couple of both, clustering the star-shaped blooms as she moves on. The Lavender smells sweet she grabs an extra spring or two to help fluff up the bouquet, then makes a delighted noise at the miniature sunflowers. She gets two, one for Kailani and one for her mother, and settles them in the middle of the other gathered blooms. That seems perfect, so she makes sure the stems are all tucked together and ties a bit of twine around them, then gathers up the bouquet and canters back.
"Kailani!" She cheers as she slides to a stop at the bank and passes the bouquet over. "The bright yellow ones are sunflowers, these are a smaller type so they should fit both of you! Then there are lilies and lavender, just like you asked for. The lavender can make your hide smell really nice if it rubs on you, so it's worth admiring above water before you head off. But I hope your Mama likes all of them."

Kailani marvled at the visual painting Sylvi was creating with her descriptions. It kept her busy for the short while Sylvi had gone to the garden. Kailani's attention was snapped back as a large colorful burst of flowers came through the trees. Kailani couldn't help but swim excitedly in a circle till her new friend reached the waters edge. The first thing Kai exclaimed over as Sylvie laid them out gently in front of her was the glorious sunflowers. "That's what a sunflower looks like?" Her eyes widening and smile growing as they made eye contact. "And THAT'S a MINI?" It was bigger even than her paw. And a flower that could make you smell good? Down in the water there wasn't much veriety when it came to smells. She leaned in slowly to sniff at the lavender and almost melted down to the ground to keep her muzzle against the vivid scent. Fresher than any fresh crisp crystal clear water. And this didn't burn the lungs like the glacial water did.
"That's so nice" her words came out dreamily. Kailani lifted herself back into a more presentable position before continuing. "Thank you Sylvie. These are so pretty! I bet she's going to love the crown we make for her." Her eyes crinkled at the corners "and you even brought enough so we could have one! That shows real kindness. I bet when I tell mama about you and how good friends we are she'd never imagine I had time to go places I shouldn't." Kailani looked down at the assortment, wondering where to even begin. Did she need to soak the stems at all so they could be pliable enough to bend? Not only that, but now that she looked at them a whisper of a memory came to her of her sister yammering on about colors and meanings. Maybe if she got her sister talking about that her mom wouldn't have time to breathe let alone wonder what dangers her rambunctious little girl had gotten into that day.
The time slipped by slowly at first, but darkness started to creep around the edges as the sun continued to sink. Sylvi had just finished showing Kailani the proper technique of creating a flower crown that might last underwater. Kailani's paws making quick work of the twists and turns of the stems while their fun conversion almost stilled it at times. Finally Kailani tucked her two flower crowns into a pouch she had almost left at home at the start of her day. "Again, thanks so much Sylvie. If you are in the area again, I'm usually always here." Her eyes drifted wistfully towards the bank of the river again and her lips quarked to the side. An itch for adventure and discovery already starting to creep back in. Spending time with her new friend had made that feeling disappear. Now, on her way home, she could feel it again.

Sylvi makes a soft, victorious sound in her throat as she watches her new friend admiring the flowers, nodding emphatically at the question. "Yes, the regular ones are at least twice as big! And the stems often grow up above my ears in height, reaching up toward the sky. I think that's why they're named what they are? Because of how they look and that they face the sun? But I'm no expert. Either way, these will fit behind your ear if you want to wear one, while a full sized one is probably big even as a hat!"
She might giggle softly at the picture painted, but it's out of a sweet-tempered amusement and not anything malicious. Maybe she should try to find a sunflower and try it on as a hat, just to see what it's like? Either way she'll have to find a full-sized one to show Kailani next time, because the sheer size really is boggling. In the mean time, she warms to the conversation at hoof, giving the lavender a fond glance.
"Mmmm, it's one of my favorites." She admits in a soft, happy tone. "Lilies have a more delicate scent, which is nice enough... But the lavender is the best, I think. You can dry it out and put it places to make spaces smell nice, or I have friends that put it in candles or grind it into a powder they then shape and burn? They call it incense? It makes all the air smell a bit like clean smoke and dried flowers, it's pretty neat. I'll try to get some things together to share next time, okay? So don't get in too much trouble, or your Mama won't let you visit again..."
She pouted a bit at the thought, then shook it off. "Since everything is freshly cut, they'll be pretty bendy, and adding cool water will help them stay nice... So you should be able to wear them or decorate with them and enjoy them for a while. And when they start too look too wilted, maybe you can plan another trip and we'll get you some different ones, hmm? Until then, be safe, and I'll see you again soon, right?"
Sylvi gave a smile and a slight bow, backing up on the bank to give her friend room to depart. "Don't forget about me!"
