Generally I use Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign.

I use Photoshop to adjust photos and to create templates for my web pages.

I use Illustrator to draw or paint or just to create some cool design.

I use InDesign to create layouts for my graphic design work.

Example: For a brochure I begin with sketches by hand and develop 3 or 4 layouts that I think work well for the brochure's purpose. After the client has chosen which one they like, I alter it according to any changes they have suggested. I then create a basic layout in InDesign. I edit the photos that I will use in photoshop and use the 'place' tool to put them into my layout in InDesign. From there I consult with my client and make changes until the brochure is finished. I then use the package tool to create a folder with all of my images and files in it. The final step is to make a PDF to take to the printer.
