Im pretty sure he's blind. It's been years since I've read through the series in detail, but he was blinded by Adam Kadamon's radiance when his UberHoliness appeared to him after Zaphikel slit his own throat in a suicide attempt after rather life-shattering events. Adam Kadamon saved him, but Zaphikel hasn't been able to see since[/SPOILERS]
