She awoke to the sound of pounding rain, twisting of trees, and the lurid crack of thunder. Her face twisted into a frighten grimace. “It’s nothing but the rain,” she muttered to herself. She threw herself upon her pillow, and closed her weary eyes. She was almost to a dream-like state when she heard it. Soft, but distinct a sound she knew. Peering out of her window she gazed upon her yard. The trees whirled and branches swooped, but there was no sign of an origin of the noise. It seemed to be the tapping of cold steel against that of her window pain. There was nothing nor anyone in sight to make the noise.
She turned to see a small girl dressed in a simple white tunic. The girl kept her head low, and her long black hair spilled into her face. There was an air of sadness to her. In her right hand was a gleaming knife. She advanced towards the girl. The child lifted her head; her face was pure white except where tears had stained her face. She dropped to her knees next to the child to become eye-level with her. As tears trickled from the child’s eyes she spoke.
“You have wronged your fellow man. You have been a coward and did not rise to your expectations. You should not have allowed fear to rule your life. You shall be forgiven.”
With her last word the child plunged the cold blade into her and was gone…
