Because in Japanese, it's trendy to use english words to sound cool or mysterious or foreign.

Because in Japanese, it's trendy to use english words to sound cool or mysterious or foreign.

I think more the reason they changed names was so that English speaking audiences didn't go "wtf?!" when hearing them. Ami isn't so bad, but having someone introduced as "Usagi Tsukino" is kind of overwhelming. Most the younger audiences the American show was geared toward wouldn't be able to pronounce the character names in the original Japanese.

It might be worth noting that Chibi-Usa is a nickname, and Chibi-Usa's real name is Usagi, just like her mom. Chibi-Usa = Small-Usa(gi).
The same probably goes for Rini; "Rini" may be being a cute nickname for Serena.

Rini is a diminutive form of Serena, although I don't anyone would call someone named Serena "Rini" in real life. "Rena" would make more sense, as it's an abbreviation. So, yes, Rini is supposed to be a nickname for Serena.
